I didn’t ever think I would go somewhere and want to return time after time but this place is that place!

The staff all go above and beyond. From the chambermaids, waiting staff, receptionists, porter, assistant manager right through to the maintenance guys and the pool (and everything beach related) guy. I don’t think I’ve ever stayed anywhere quite like it for positive, customer focused attitude.

The building is a pink colonial style sprawling estate but it feels like an intimate boutique hotel. There are two pools, a crazy golf course, outdoor gym equipment and this is all set on the beach.

The menu is varied and although we only had dinner here, there was plenty of choice for us to have something different every time and as I don’t eat seafood or fish that’s quite a feat!

The rooms are in typical Caribbean style and very quaint and quirky. As corporate hotels with no personality are in a past life for me it suits me well.

We had a slight problem that needed maintenance and rang reception. There was someone at the door within five minutes and the issue was resolved later that day. We were offered another room but as we had an amazing ocean view we were happy to wait until it was fixed. As soon as it was done the chambermaid came in to thoroughly clean and sanitise.

There is a steel band playing twice a week who are awesome!

Our room (102) needs refurbishing. It was clearly designed by an amateur who hadn't thought through the design. The room is quite long but very narrow with a small, very poorly equipped bathroom. Kitchenette pretty useless. The hotel charges for the room safe. The WiFi is very poor in this room. The television and dressing room mirror are the wrong way round for the design of the dressing table. There are too many pillows and cushions on the beds. The toilet roll holder was designed by an imbecile. The flush system needs overhaul or replacement. There are better rooms at the other end of the hotel but they must be even more expensive. Those are the main bad points.
The good point, overwhelmingly, is the location on this great beach (Dover). Also we really enjoyed the band on (I think) Sunday night, which played Carole King, James Taylor, Harry Belafonte and other classics, and played them really well. The afternoon tea at 4pm became a habit, the restaurant was pretty good though as we were on half board I was pretty happy when the 'fine dining' menu finally changed.
It is a good place to really relax and swim a bit but I thought severely overpriced for what it offered in terms of amenities.

We had a wonderful time staying at this gem of a hotel. It’s in the perfect location and we had a fabulous ocean view room directly overlooking Dover Beach. Whilst our room was not overly modern this just added to its charm and had everything we needed. Bright, clean and immaculately serviced every day. Great air-con and everything where it should be (plug sockets, mirrors etc) and opening the curtains to that view every day was just magical. No mad rush for sun-beds when we were there, you could just grab one and settle down under one of the palm trees that provided adequate shade, although there were also plenty of beds by both pools. We had lunch there most days which was delicious and all the staff were always very friendly. It was our 10th wedding anniversary while we were there and we had a lovely surprise of some bubbles, card and flowers left in our room on the day which was a lovely touch. We were also able to keep our room on (for a fee) until 6pm on our last day which was very welcome. All in all a perfect stay from start to finish. We can’t wait to come back.

Where to start?
The location is superb.
Nothing is too much trouble for the staff.
They are exceptional, really care and will go that extra mile for you.
Jenni, Allison and Carolyn on reception are amongst the best I have ever seen and couldn't do enough for us
Jenni booked all our restaurant reservations in advance
All of the staff were fabulous and reflect the warmth of the people of Barbados.
Two were exceptional.
Ken's love for life is infectious. A really nice guy.
Leah is just a really lovely person
Wonderful cocktails in a beautiful setting
Some of the rooms may be slightly dated but they are clean, comfortable and everything works
We were apart of eight over four rooms - No complaints
Location is also brilliant. Right of one of the best beaches in Barbados and at the quiet end of St Lawrence Gap

We spent 5 days at Southern Palms with 4 other couples. We had done a lot of research ahead of time and picked Southern Palms for the beautiful beach and the photos of the rooms. The beach was beautiful! However, the room was a huge disappointment. We had spent the money to splurge on a room with an ocean view. Because they put us in a room on the first floor, your ocean view was through the pool area and some shrubbery. The room itself was no bigger or better than a motel room in the U.S. and for that we paid $400/night! In addition, in order to use the safe in our room, we paid an additional $3.00/day and it stopped working twice so we had to call maintenance. I don't think I've ever stayed in a room where you paid to use the safe. Our friends who opted for rooms without ocean views had really small rooms and a number of the electrical outlets didn't work for charging devices. The bathrooms were old and small. The restaurant food was okay but overpriced. The lunch was probably the best. The breakfast buffet and barbecue buffet were way too expensive for what you received. BUT the worst part of staying there was the noise from across the road where there were loud entertainers who didn't stop until midnight some nights and 2am other nights. The bathroom vents and our door let the sound in like they we singing outside our room. Ear plugs, turning up the A/C, nothing prevented that noise from interfering with our sleep! I understand from our friends that the garden facing rooms did not have this issue. However, I wish that I had read this on TA because I would not have booked this hotel. And I would definitely not return to Southern Palms. I'm still rather mystified by all of the great reviews.

From the moment we arrived we felt such a warm welcome and attention to detail throughout. Our rooms were spacious, clean and with some welcoming gifts (thank you!). The view on to the beach was dreamy like a postcard and the food at the restaurant and breakfast buffet was tasty and rich. The staff were quick to ask what they could get for us and the live music was the icing on the cake. Located not far from St. Lawrence Gap, it is the perfect location.

Would highly recommend grabbing a taxi to Pebbles beach early (6am) one morning to see the horses bathing in the sea there too.

I would definitely love to return to this hotel, it was one made of dreams, thank you to everyone who served us and made it the best first experience of Barbados for us.

We stayed here for 2 weeks and really enjoyed. It , we were a bit sceptical of it being a 3 star and some of the reviews but we had an amazing time , upon check in we were upgraded to a junior suite from an ocean view and the room was steps away from the beach . The staff are lovely from the Gardner to Rodney the pool man and all reception staff , the location is amazing , on one of the best beaches in the south , beautiful white sand , warm ocean , and very peaceful, we spent our days just relaxing , it’s about a 5min walk into the gap which has several great restaurants including mimosa , primo , harlequin , cafe sol , and the best bar we went in was the rum shop which has a great atmosphere or if you walk the other way you can eat with the locals very cheap, daddy’s was our favourite , we ate lunch in the hotel a couple of times and the food was very good , the rooms are quite dated and tired but are spotlessly clean and have every amenity you would want and let’s face it who wants to spend there time in a hotel room when the beach is that beautiful, we spent several afternoons up at Worthing beach which is about 10 minutes walk and has a couple of bars on the beach , a really nice spot to sit and watch the world go by , the hotel has happy hour between 6/7 and the service can be a bit sketchy which in 2 weeks is a very minor complaint , overall we loved it here and I would return tommorow

We had a great stay at Southern Palms for 14 nights with two rooms. It was our first visit to the Caribbean and the staff here made us feel very welcome. Rooms were great with views of pool and sea, The food was good to and compared to some restaurants reasonably priced so we ate a few times usually after happy hour for drinks 2 for 1 😊. Location has to be one of the best direct access to the beach with hotel sun loungers available. It felt as if it was a private beach although no beaches in Barbados are. Turtles seen most days whilst swimming.
Location is ideal for walking to other restaurants and bars up the gap if you wished to, felt safe whilst out walking at night just mind your footing on some of the unstable pavements at night. Bus stop not far to catch the local buses to Bridgetown or other beaches on the west coast.
Will definitely like to return to the island and Southern Palms

This is my second time at southern palms and it was great again. The hotel is perfectly located if you want to look around the island. Oistins is a five minute bus ride away and Bridgetown is around 20 - 30 minutes the other way. There is a taxi rank out side and bus stops very close by. There is an abundance of restaurants and bars near by, we never had a bad meal all stay. The hotel is on one of the best beaches. The beach is spotless and is never full. You can swim with turtles best time is from 3pm onwards when they come closer to shore. On an evening we saw four turtles laying but never saw any hatching this time.
The hotel is spotless there is an army of staff cleaning and taking care of the grounds. The rooms are pretty big and well cared for. We had a sea view overlooking the smaller pool which was a fantastic location. The children could play in the pool or go on the beach which was a stones throw from the room. The staff can’t do enough for you and all are friendly and helpful. If you are unsure of anything they take the time to answer your questions.
Tea, coffee and cake at four pm is lovely and the Managers rum punch reception is worth going to as the manager and general manager take time out and speak to you.
The food is lovely at southern palms we had a few meals there it is priced the same as other restaurants close by.
There is also entertainment on some nights which is worth staying in for.
You can exchange money at reception which has a better exchange rate than anywhere we could find in the uk.
The whole family loved our stay and can not wait to come back. If you are looking for a good hotel in a good location you could not find anywhere better.

I recently returned from a 2 week holiday in Barbados and we stayed at Southern Palms. Although I found the staff to be really nice and tentative I was pretty underwhelmed with the hotel.

Firstly and this is no reflection on the hotel but merely based on location, I wouldn’t stay on Dover beach again. We booked this location to be close to the gap but unfortunately the beach was spoilt with bad sea weed and rough seas. If I ever return to Barbados I will definitely stay west or more south west to avoid this as the water is calmer and gets less sea weed. We also found the gap to be a lot quieter than we expected except for weekends night time when it gets slightly busier but overall didn’t find the gap to be half as lively as expected. Maybe it’s because technically June is out of season but I definitely wouldn’t say it’s got much going on Mon- Fri and is dead during the day.

The hotel itself is very basic. Although we had a lovely big balcony and a partial sea view the room was tiny and the bathroom was like a tiny box. You couldn’t even move in the shower. We have a couple of really stained tatty chairs in the room which were in dire need of being thrown out. Not sure why they keep them.

We also found the hotel layout a bit annoying with minimal sunbathing spots. There are some sun beds on the grass but by 3pm the sun is facing the other side so that’s annoying. There are sun loungers to use on the beach but no umbrellas so it’s either be in the shade or burn on the beach lol. We also found the atmosphere a bit somber, no music, always quiet and nobody around so we ended up spending most of our days on other beaches outside of the hotel. It feels like the hotel is definitely catered towards the older generation and while we aren’t that young ( a couple in our thirties) we like to travel to the Caribbean for the jolly atmosphere and you just don’t get that in this hotel.

One highlight to the location was twice during our stay we did see turtles laying eggs on the sand at night which was so cool.

But overall I wouldn’t stay here again. It really wasn’t great value for money. We have had much better quality stays for less when comparing to other places we have travelled and stayed in the Caribbean. And as mentioned if I did return to Barbados wouldn’t stay on the south coast.

The hotel stretches along the beach. So there are sea views I would think from most rooms. It's literally on the beach front . We were in a room furthest from the restaurant. Must have been all of a 5 minute walk max. On the flat . Not sure about refurbed rooms
