Built in the early 17th century at the heart of the Champagne countryside, this listed historic château sits imposingly in the middle of a 50-acre park with a large terrace, a kitchen garden and magnificent fountains. With its vast reception rooms decorated with painted panelling and 17th and 18th century furniture, this splendid hotel possesses a rare charm. Some lovely bedrooms have delightfully romantic views over the moat that surrounds the building.

En route from Switzerland to the UK, this lovely "shabby chic" chateau in Champagne country is well located about 20 minutes or so off the motorway just before Reims, and not far from Epernay. We were warmly welcomed - all staff seem to speak excellent English and are friendly and approachable. We were given a room upgrade which was a bonus! The grounds are great for an early evening stroll and the surroundings and chateau interiors grand and imposing, making our one night stay quite a unique experience. Everything was very efficiently organized in consideration of the prevailing Coronavirus situation. The evening meal was really delicious accompanied by a pleasant wine recommended by our waiter - naturally our aperitifs were local Blanc de Blancs champagne! We took breakfast in our room, making the most of the fabulous views over the grounds and fountains. It was not cheap but good value we thought for the experience of staying in a "stately home". We rounded off our trip with a visit to stock up on a case of local champagne at Borel Lucas. We were well pleased with our purchase and suitably refreshed and rested for continuing our journey north. To be recommended.....

It really is lovely, inside and outside, with its water filled moats. Our suite, Saladin, had a living room area with a sofa/bed, desk chairs, a 4 poster bed, with curtains around it and 2 antique armchairs and a table. The room was quite dark, even with the lamps on, as no central ceiling lighting. And the curtains prevented the bedside lamps from shining onto the book I was reading. However, the room was indeed lovely and gave the impression of living in the past, with beautiful views of the park and moats. There's a safe, good bedding, good pillows, ordinary bathrobes and slippers, bathtub with an overhead shower but lovely Nuxe products. There was a beautiful mosaĂŻque on the wall.
Breakfast was good, though only boiled eggs and industrial scrambled eggs, not your hone made one. But there was plenty of everything, freshly squeezed orange juice, great French patisseries, good butter etc
We ate at the Bistrot the 2nd night, very nice, because on the 1st night, the hotel restaurant and the bistrot were full. No (dinner) room service in the château, only a sandwich was offered. We declined.
Apart from the beauty and the historical setting of the hotel, the personnel were extraordinary, good humour, friendly, welcoming and so helpful. They were as wonderful as the château itself. We paid about 800€ for the 2 nights, breakfast included, free parking. There are cheaper dates but we were there during a busy national holiday weekend.
We saw the 10 fountains in the sleepy village and bought nice champagne directly from the winegrower just next to the château at a very reasonable price.

This was our second visit to Château Étoges and it was just as excellent as the first time in 2019. We stayed in the château itself and the welcome from the staff was friendly and they couldn’t do enough for you. The grounds are beautiful and you can walk round the gardens and there are tables, chairs and sun beds dotted around the grounds for relaxation.
I recommend you book a table for dinner at the orangery restaurant which presents excellent French cuisine and wine. The decor and ambiance is subtle and understated but special. The gastronomic menu paired with the wine flight is worth the money and the sommelier and the staff will ensure you have a great experience.
The rooms are all individually designed and the furniture is a mixture of period and antique. The bathrooms are contemporary and sympathetically designed. There are paintings, statues and antiques all around the château. It’s amazing.
As you are in the heart of the champagne region, there are various local champagne houses to visit in the area and the countryside views are stunning.

Through our travel agency, FDM Rejser, we booked a life enjoyment experience at the castle. However, unfortunately the castle restaurant was closed Monday to Tuesday. We arrived Monday in the afternoon and there was no afternoon tea/cake arrangement available, only a total depopulated sitting room from where we could order a drink, which we chose not to. Looking for something in the area, only a small supermarked was open. The only nearby dinner restaurant, also referred to by the castle, serves burgers and salat. Therefore we leave already Tuesday instead of Wednesday, disapointed by the agency, who arranged this for us, knowing that the castle restaurant was closed. Also disapointed by the castle due to lack of activities and for calling the nearby burgerbar a restaurant.

Dear Madame Flagstad, Thank you for your comment. I am so sorry if your Travel Agency do not informed you in advance that one of our restaurant (L’Orangerie, gourmet restaurant) was closed on Monday/Tuesday. Your travel agency was inform and she recognize their mistake. I really regret their lack of advice and their error. We suggested you other gourmet restaurants in our region, but you did not want to drive, so you decided to eat in our other restaurant (L’Atelier, brasserie restaurant), as all our 50 hotel guests this Monday evening. This restaurant L'Atelier is a brasserie, not a burger restaurant: à la carte you can order : 6 starters (all home made with fresh products) + 8 different main courses (2 fresh meats + 1 fresh fish + 2 salads + 2 burgers + 1 veggie option) and also 7 differents desserts... So for us, we are really far from a burger bar. It is a traditional french food restaurant, or a brasserie/bistrot. Furthermore, we offer tea with small cake/biscuits, not a very large selection, but guests can enjoy a cup of tea with small cake, on the terrace or in the large lounge. We were fullybooked on this Monday, so the lounge was probably not a long time a "depopulated sitting room", the other 50 guests arrived perhaps a little bit later than you and some of then enjoyed this authentic 17th century chateau lounge. Next time, please contact directly the hotelier in order to check all the points essential for you, as, for example, that a gourmet restaurant is open during your stay. I really regret this, especially because we had sent the information to your travel agency. Best regards. Eric Himmesoete

The château in itself is beautiful. Our room was not in the château itself but in a side building. It was perfectly acceptable.
What leads us to rate the hotel as average is breakfast, which was decidedly below par. The smoked salmon was probably the worst we've ever had. What was on offer was not fresh or homemade. It really looked and tasted like commercial food. It is disappointing because one expects so much more of a place like this.
The breakfast experience was not helped by the person in charge being rather on edge and speaking loudly and constantly to one of the waitresses. This took place in the pantry whose door was left open for everyone to hear loud comments in French (which we speak and understand. The comments on the state of mind of the person in charge were not exactly positive and courteous), or in the breakfast rooms themselves. It gave a rather bad impression of disregard for foreign guests.
The front desk staff is courteous but doesn't seen highly interested in their guests.
All in all, could do better for such an establishment such as is and with rates this high.

Dear Im_forest_girl, Thank you for your review about our place. We are happy that you have enjoyed our beautifull chateau and the bedroom in the Orangerie. We regret that your breakfast not really live up to your expectations and sorry about if one of our staff spoke loudly in the pantry. Furthermore, thank to the expiration of the COVID restrictions about buffet/service, we can now offer again all the home made products on the breakfast buffet. Best regards. Eric Himmesoete

Absolutely stunning Château but the local area has absolutely nothing to do. Unless you want to drive a while in order to eat during the day or have a lot of money to spend on dinner, don’t go here. Rooms and inside of building stunning though!

Dear Leilah, Thank you for your comment and for the "absolutely stunning chateau". Sorry, I am not sure to understand your title "lack of wines available", I do not think you speak about our large choice of wines offered on our wine list with more than 348 different wines ! Do you speak about champagne wineries in our village ? In Etoges, there are about 10 champagne producers, you can visited most of them, all walking distance. You are right, it is better to have a car to come in Etoges, a small village situated in the countryside, on the Touristic Road of Champagne, about only 20 minuts from Epernay. Best regards Eric Himmesoete Manager

Chateau d'Etoges is well situated for those travelling to the UK and looking for a convenient stop off point before heading to Calais. The rooms are traditionally decorated and the bathrooms modern but fit in well. Dinner at the restaurant is good although gets busy at times. They accept dogs which is a bonus and there is a large garden for them to run around in. Dogs are not allowed in the restaurant.

Chateau d'Etoges is a delightful hotel where we have stayed on 3 occasions. The rooms in the chateau are grand and those above the restaurant located in the grounds are practical and comfortable. Service in all areas of the hotel/restaurant is very good.
Dinner is very well prepared with an interesting menu. Breakfast in the chateau completes the view that the chateau cares about its guests

Very relaxed chateau hotel, stunning with a moat and large gardens. We stayed in the Coach House which was very comfortable and with a lift. The staff were very welcoming and helpful and we had a delicious glass of champagne in the drawing room in front of a log fire. We ate at the Bistrot, a 5 minute walk which is functional and very busy but not very French. We skipped breakfast as it is rather expensive.

I would check with the hotel if they have a special dress code for New Year’s eve. Usually I would say men would not need to wear a tie but suggest long-sleeved shirt/smart trousers. For ladies short dress/trousers would be ok. Have a fabulous time.

Yes, there are champagne houses very nearby, as well as others within a close drive. we used a local guide who organized private tours for us at 3 different vineyards (he will arrange them at the well-known ones, or smaller, less common but still excellent ones, depending on your preference). lunch (with wine) was included in the price. I highly recommend him. Tom, Relative to Chateau Etoges I can't speak with any authority. Generally speaking, however, it's the general practice to allow the dog to stay in your room and then charge you a special cleaning fee on top of the regular room charge. In addition, I wouldn't be surprised if they had specific rooms available for guests traveling with pets so as to avoid potential issues with subsequent guests who have pet allergies. As to the dining room, again I can't speak to Chateau Etoges' policy, but I suspect it's more restrictive and, to some degree, based on the size of your dog. That said, in three weeks of traveling in France, my wife and I regularly saw dogs in restaurants. The best answer I could give you is to e-mail the Chateau and ask them. In my experience the front desk staff is completely fluent in English and very responsive to e-mail inquiries. And if you end up staying there, be sure to eat in their restaurant, each and every night you're there. I went elsewhere my second night, to a highly rated restaurant in a neighboring town, and regretted my missed opportunity of two fabulous dining experiences in a row.
