Mike’s Dauin Dive Resort is a small Hotel and Dive Centre located in Dauin, just 20 minutes south of Dumaguete on Negros Island. Our twelve rooms beautifully are only meters from the beach, as is our lagoon pool complete with waterfall. Our aim is to provide you with the highest quality holiday and diving experience and our comfortable size means we can provide you with a relaxed and intimate resort atmosphere. Most guests board our custom built Banca boats to dive or snorkel the stunning paradise of Apo Island only a short ride away. This premier dive site is one of the oldest and best managed marine sanctuaries in the Philippines. Expect large shoals of fish, many sea turtles and spectacularly colourful coral gardens. Closer still are the dives at Dauin, which are recognised as some of the best macro-photography sites in the Philippines with the chance of meeting Frogfish, Seahorses, Flamboyant Cuttlefish and the famous Blue-ringed Octopus.

Following my umpteenth visit to Mikes's, which is probably my favourite dive location in the Philippines, I've probably said everything in previous reviews so please excuse any repetition.

The rooms are comfortable (with 8 original and 4 newly added) and set in a small resort with beautifully tended gardens and direct access to the beach. There is a small, well maintained, pool and an open air (covered) restaurant area, as well as ample additional seating throughout the garden. The cuisine is local Philippino, Mexican or European, with good sized portions of quality food, all cooked and served by the amazingly friendly and helpful staff who are all long term employees of the resort.

The diving is exceptional. There are very experienced local guides, who take small groups of max 3-4 divers and, if there is anything to see, they will find it for you. The diving is done from either of 2 purpose built banqa boats and will take you to nearby Apo Island for superb corals, shoaling fish and turtles etc or locally along the coast for muck diving, where you see all the weird and wonderful - on just one dive this time, I saw 6 frogfish, ranging from minute to very large, 3 flambuoyant cuttlefish, devilfish, dragonets etc etc. Over the years, I have probably done close to 150 dives with Mike's and never tire of seeing the wide range of wildlife available. Numbers permitting, they will also arrange day trips to other islands and dive locations and local island trips to places of interest, if you're not divers or need a rest day.

If you need training, there are excellent ex-pat instructors who can give the full range of PADI tuition.

I am a BSAC Advanced Diver/Advanced Instructor and travel with all my own gear but the resorts hire equipment is of good quality and gear hire and dive costs are very reasonable.

All in all, a great dive resort that I will be returning to in the not too distant future.

After being in Dumaguete, we had a choice to go back to Manila early or continue exploring: so happy that we did.

Found Mike’s Dauin Dive Resort based on reviews and they did not disappoint. From the team, to the location, to the restaurant to the diving, this is a combination of old world charm and comfort. We stayed three nights and wished we had stayed for three weeks!

Mike’s is divided into three parts in one location: great dive shop with PADI instruction, led by thoughtful, skillful and caring qualified instructors; the restaurant, which offer reasonably priced American/Mexican/Philippine food and local beers; and the hotel which offers simple but comfortable rooms, cleanliness and location location location (if you are looking for “on the beach”, local walking and exploring).

Can’t say enough good things about the staff (thank you Nick and team), Ace, Jennifer and dive instructor, Corri.

I would offer the following tips:

Do go diving from here! Great local diving with great crew. Hire the boat for the day and go to Apo Island or walk 200 meters to the left and snorkel from the shore (bring 50 pesos just in case you are asked).

Do get your training from here. PADI certified divers to ensure you are safe and have the skills needed.

Do go snorkeling, even if you have never done it before. Go to Apo and jump in.

Do eat at the restaurant! Good food and reasonably priced with great staff. Sometimes they don’t have what you want to make a second option just in case.

If you forget a book, they have some. If you need anything, they will try to help.

Walk of the resort! Go and get a haircut from one of the local barber shops; go to Finn’s just up the road for local beer on tap; walk around to get something from a sari-sari, a bakery or fruit from the market.

If you are looking for a diving, beach, holiday experience that is friendly, safe and full of as much or as little adventure as you would like, Mike’s Dauin Dive Resort is a top notch option without breaking the bank.

This is going to be a little lengthy but there is just so much to say, so bear with me.

The Site
The rooms are spotlessly clean and the bed is very comfortable. The surrounding grounds and pool are as well taken care of as the rooms. The restaurant also maintained to the same high standard. Mike’s is right on the beach and it’s clean and junk free for as far as we walked on it and in all the times we went walking there was only a dozen or so people. Like your own piece of paradise.

The People
The staff at Mike’s are incredible from Nick who runs the place down to the last grounds keeper. The staff are always in motion, serving, cleaning and asking care of odds and ends. I enjoyed the way they did these things, it was obvious that it was not just a job but a place to which they had a connection. Since they were enjoying their job and working with each other, it really did feel like home. I’ve never put that in any review I’ve done over the years but it is just so true for Mike’s. Special mention to Nick, June, our dive guides Ace, Marlin and Rommel (sp? Sorry) and our drivers, Don and Franco.

The Diving
Is very well organized and the above mentioned dive guides were professional, knowledgeable and caring. The dive equipment is in excellent shape and all ready to go. We dove at Apo Island, which was spectacular, and some sites along the coast and in the Dauin Marine Sanctuary. Really good dives, especially with the volcanic vents.

Green Points
No plastic straws only paper
Refillable water jugs in the rooms, not single use plastics
Cloth napkins in the restaurant
Endangered species on site (black vole)being given space to live. ( don’t worry you don’t really see them unless you go looking for them, which I did)

Problems
Absolutely zero, as you can tell, my husband and I loved the place. It hard to leave

We stayed at Mike's for 3 nights in February. We chose the resort as we were interested in the PADI diving courses and dumaguete is a great starting point if you want to do island hopping in the Philippines. Transportation from the airport to the resort was organised for us and was hassle free. The resort is lovely and the staff were kind and attentive. The rooms are cleaned daily and we had a beautiful view of the ocean and pool area from our room. There is bar/ restaurant where good and reasonably priced food and drinks are served from the morning till late. But most importantly: If you want to do the PADI open water certificate, this is the place to go! Our instructor, Jonathan, was amazing ! The Dauin marine sanctuary is just around the corner and we got to see incredible marine life during our training! We didn't even need to go to Apo Island for the turtles as we got to see multiple turtles right there! Jonathan knows the area really well and even knows the turtles by name :) They went the extra mile to get us certified in a limited amount of time and we really enjoyed every second of it. Highly recommended!

We chose to stay at Mike's because we wanted to complete our PADI Open Water dive course at a 5 star dive centre. From the first correspondence I was very impressed with the prompt communication and ease of arranging our diving schedule.

Mike's is a very small and personal resort, the grounds are immaculate with plenty of seating areas. The rooms are spacious and immaculate, with extra large, comfortable beds. Walk in showers with plenty of hot water, air con and as with most places throughout the Philippines free mineral water to help reduce the single use plastic. Outside of your rooms are two very comfy chairs perfect for relaxing in at the end of the day. You also get a large clothes horse to hang all of your wet swimwear and any diving equipment on which was very helpful.

We found all the staff from housekeeping to the dive team to be very welcoming and helpful. We was very impressed with the efficiency of how everything was organised and nothing was to much trouble. Transfers were arranged, last minute day trips, we couldn't have asked for better customer service and what made it so special was how personal it was made to feel.

Nic is an excellent instructor and we was able to complete our PADI and enjoy several fun dives which were excellent. I can not speak highly enough of Nik and Mike's Beach resort.

Towing 2 kids (12 and 15) with gear, you want things to work and be made easy. Mike's didn't disappoint. Nic and Joy kept in contact as our arrival approached. Our transport was there waiting for us as we landed.

Nic was on his game booking us for Apo the day after we arrived. What he hadn't anticipated was that we wanted to get wet already that afternoon. With a smile (probably covering up stress) Nic overcame hell and high-water to gear us up for an afternoon dive with Romel (they were already pretty full up, but we didn't know that).

The next few days of diving were superb. Apo, Oslob and Sumilon, night dives, boat dives, shore dives...We were arguably TOO spoiled (bite my tongue.) We only had to keep track of our wetsuits on/off the boat.

When we wanted to explore inland, we were hooked up with car and driver (remember we're a family of 4) to hike to waterfalls and Valencia in the hills.

We occupied the house as a family needing two bedrooms. Warning, no AC, which was fine over New Year's. They should fit it with AC as an option. Having our own kitchen was wasted since we ate most meals sitting by the pool, prepared by the kitchen. Could I complain? If you force me I can say we had to wait a while for food, which I wished had more Filipino options. Though, I enjoyed my lumpia Shanghai each time. And the kids and I helped wear out the blades for our shakes. If you like fresh and spicy...the calamansi (a local citrus like lime) and ginger was TO. DIE. FOR. Healthy too. Totally inspired me to get a blender at home. All in all, the house was spacious and homey.

6 days later we didn't want to leave.

We had a great dive experience with Mike's, the dive service is better than other more expensive dive resorts we've stayed in Dauin. The dive guides are very accommodating to our requests to the creatures that we would like to encounter and they deliver beyond expectations. The Boat crews are the best in the business, they are kind, accommodating and have the initiative to make sure you're ok, their overall service is beyond our expectations.

The rooms are above average, spacious than most dive resorts in Dauin. you get the value for what you have paid for, they are well house kept and cleaned everyday.

The food are ok but with limited choices; but the chef was very kind enough to prepare our request that is not in the menu. However, Breakfast serving needs to be quicker due to the tight schedule between breakfast time and dive boat departure in the morning.

Overall, most of the hotel staff are very kind and accommodating; Mike's Dauin Beach resort made all the effort to have our overall experience pleasant and enjoyable.

Dauin is a world class mac dive destination, underwater photographers will not be disappointed with the wonderful critters that Dauin has to offer. A camera room facility at Mike's would have been great for avid underwater photographers.

We enjoyed our stay at Mike's and made use of most of the facilities on offer. The food was reasonably priced and tasty but did sometimes take a long time to appear. Restaurant seemed to have good days and "not so good' days.
Well located for our photography/diving trip with access to localish muck diving sites full of critters including lots of frogfish. Also trips to Apo island that offers beautiful coral in excellent condition and ample wide angle opportunities. A little windy (end Jan) so visibility was not great in the deeper water but on top of the reef at 6-10m was lovely.

The room was spacious, comfortable and well serviced. The drainage on the whole site, bathroom plugs, outside drains and septic system is very dated and could probably do with an upgrade.

The diving services were fantastic with great guides and boat staff.

We will be back to stay when we're in Dauin and recommend it as a place to stay when visiting or diving in the area.

A dive buddy of mine and I spent 10 days at Mike's and it was a great experience. The hotel staff is extremely attentive to their guests needs and requests. The two of us had originally booked the large suite they have on site, but it was obvious it was much more than the two of us required. The next morning we met with the Corey, the manger, who was completing her last few days on the job and Chester who is her replacement. We asked if it would be possible to change our room request from the large house to two smaller rooms. Within an hour, we were in our new rooms. Each day, throughout our stay, Corey and Chester would chat with us and the other guests to see if there was anything we needed. The rest of the hotel staff were equally attentive, friendly and courteous. Our primary reason for choosing Mike's was the diving in Dauin. Again, everything was first class. We spent 8 days diving with Ace and Gabby who are the dive guides at Mike's. Whether we were muck diving around the resort or traveling to Apo island to dive the walls and reefs, Ace and Gabby were on top of their game. During the dive, they frequently check on the divers in their groups and are amazing when it comes to locating and pointing out a wide variety of sea life, from the large to the nearly microscopic. We dove Apo Island 3 times and various reefs around the resort the rest of the time; we were never disappointed. Our final day of diving, we only wanted to do 2 dives, so we could dry our equipment before our flight home. A new group had arrived at Mike's and they wanted to go to Apo, which is a 3 dive affair. We arranged for Ace to take us shore diving while Gabby went to Apo with the other divers. They really make every effort to provide you with the best diving experience possible. Ace and Gabby also take great care of your gear or the gear you rent. My buddy and I didn't have to lift a finger. From having the gear set up on the boat, to washing it all out at the end of the day and hanging it up to dry overnight, the dive guides and boat crew took care of everything. If you are looking for a great diving experience, I highly recommend Mike's. My buddy and I are already talking about a return trip to Mike's next year

We loved our 5 nights here and wished we had stayed at least a couple more days.

We had a second floor standard room (Room 8), which had a king-size bed and enormous porch, complete with oversized drying rack, comfortable chairs, and table. The layout and design of the resort make excellent use of the lot that they own, and it is very beautiful. There is a pool and restaurant on-site as well as a small beach.

Dauin is a nice town, and it is easy to walk to an ATM or to other restaurants like Finbar and Frontemare for a change of pace.

The staff is excellent. Owner Mike was visiting from Florida and stayed in the standard room directly below us. He was very friendly and found time to talk. Corri, Jonathan, and Joy helped with any questions we had regarding our visit. The servers, housekeeping, and maintenance staff were all hard-working and helpful. Ace and Gabby, two of their dive masters, were fantastic teachers and guides.
I took PADI's Discover Scuba program with Ace and then a trip to Apo Island with Gabby and highly recommend them. If you ever wanted to go scuba diving but didn't have the opportunity, take it if you visit Mike's.

We used the pool a few times but spent most of our active time at the nearby Dauin Marine Reserve. It's just a 10 minute walk on the beach from Mike's. The coral and fish varieties are beautiful and numerous. It's 50 pesos to enter, but we were only asked to pay on the weekend. Mike's has snorkeling equipment to rent if you want. They also arrange massages in your room (600 pesos) and dive and snorkeling trips to Apo island.

Mikes refused to let our two kids go on their dive boat!!! SO they suggested that we go to the local ferry port down the coast and grab a boat across. Which we did. And it was a great and cheap way to experience the turtles. The kids loved it.

The beach is fine. I walked either way every morning I was there. Good photo ops including locals drag netting along the beach for fish. You can get to the nearby resorts by walking along the beach for a different dining experience.
