I had a very similar experience to a reviewer from 2010: "Depressing - do not book here, ever," which I recommend you read, although I will try to be more objective here.

We were given the same room as that reviewer and, like him, our toilet was not working properly when we arrived, leaking all over the bathroom floor. I also asked to be moved, but the owner said he would fix it instead. Despite "fixing" it, the toilet continued to work poorly and leak the rest of our stay (5 nights). Not very pleasant to step in toilet water every time you enter the bathroom.

Also, like the previous reviewer, we were subjected to the fiesta, which is guaranteed to make your stay here absolutely miserable if you're unlucky enough to book during one. The Hippocampus backs up to a local discotheque, and for two nights (from 5pm to 3:30am), they blast the most horrendous medley of dance music you can imagine. It's like someone banging a drum relentlessly next to your head, and they also rotate the speakers or something, so that it gets a little bit quieter... and just as you start to fall asleep it comes around again, pounding into your skull. Now, to be fair, I talked to other people who were also made miserable and sleepless at other hotels. In other words, any time you travel to Malapascua, you MUST bring good earplugs as insurance - if you happen to stay during a fiesta, you'll thank me. They don't sell earplugs anywhere on the island, and the owners of this hotel won't forewarn you about when the fiesta will occur or how long the music will last. Again, not really their fault, but they are literally right next to the fiesta action, so you need to know this and be prepared. Most other hotels will be farther from the epicenter.

I would also hesitate to trust whatever you hear from the owner. Five years ago, the owner replied to "Depressing": "Please also remember that [the fiesta] is only 2 or 3 days around november 20, when we have this problem, the period december to october is quiet and very relaxing here." Obviously this is not true, since we stayed in February. If you insist on staying here, I would recommend asking the owners about the fiesta before you book, but again, not sure how forthcoming they'll be. The previous reviewer also mentioned the depressing view of garbage and trash next to Hippocampus. The owner replied, five years ago: "Also as you may imagine this construction site does not last forever and our neighbors in the meantime significantly cleaned up." Five years later, it's still a mess (granted, most of the island is still trashed from the typhoon a year and a half ago). Five years ago, the toilet was broken. Five years later, it still is. You get the idea. Finally, despite the claims that this hotel provides wifi access, it did not work at all in our rooms and only intermittently in the lobby. Stay elsewhere.

Response from hipporesort, Owner at Hippocampus Beach Resort

We are aware that the local fiestas on Malapascua are not, what most guests want to experience. Please let me give some background information: On Malapascua each of the 5 or 6 villages around the island has its annual fiesta, the main village Logon has two. Fiesta is a combination of religious activity (all fiestas are designated to a particular saint) and party. Each fiesta is being blessed by the local priest and the barangay captain (head of municipality). For the locals their fiesta is the most important festivity in the entire year, more important than Easter or Christmas. Highlight is the coronation, where - usually during the last of the 2 or 3 nights a fiesta lasts - a fiesta queen and a king are coronated, something each local dreams of. This is a cultural highlight and certainly has a touristic potential. It is not easy to convince the local communities to change their habits and loud disco music unfortunately is part of it. In our case the closest fiesta is being held on an open basketball court in the tiny village of Tawigan, some 80 to 100 m from our place. In between us and that basketball court, several houses and a large neighboring resort are located. This fiesta is being held each year around november 20 and - at least that is my impression - it has become somewhat more civilized over the last years. The questionable fiesta this february was not in Tawigan but in Indonacion, another small village about 400 m! away from us, actually quite some distance. There are many structures and resorts in between us and the Indonacion basketball court, quite a few resorts are actually located much closer to the action and had bigger problems than us. Main problem definitely is the disco music and depending on funds and interest of the organizers it can be quite loud and depending on the individual sensitivity of guests indeed annoying. Especially basses penetrate building structures and give the impression that the actual disco is closer than it actually is. It is by the way variations in wind speed and direction which cause the described fluctuations in volume. We have been fully booked during this period and also other guests expressed mixed feelings about the disco, however nobody got even close to the annoyance and bad temper of the review author. Then the leaking toilet, I do recall it! We could not change the room because our booking situation, but it was really a minor repair and took us less than an hour to fix. After the repair I did not hear any more complaints of the particular guest nor from anybody else of quite a few people staying in that room afterwards. By the way that toilet cannot have been leaking since 5 years, as the particular building did not even yet exist in 2010. Leaking toilets are really not the problem here. On the other hand there is no doubt that fiesta discos can be annoying, to an extend that very much depends on individual personality. It is a general Malapascua issue, not a single resort is exempted, and it will continue to give headaches to resort owners. However by far the most visitors leave the island unaffected by fiesta noise and in a happy mood, we certainly also get positive reviews here.

Malapascua is a little heaven if you like diving. It is not too busy, and there are quite a few restaurants. If you arrive from Maya you don't really expect to find nice Italian restaurants, smooth bars and great dive shops. We stayed in Hippocampus beach resort. The organisation was quite lame at the time we were there, but we heard the owner was in Germany at the time we were there. So the first two days we had to wait rather long for our food, the food was perfect though. Also the rest of the service was ok, but everything took long, we waited for the total bill of our stay for a few hours. This should be changed, also if the owner one should expect that this process is well done!

But all in all we had a great stay, room was good so was the food, the partner dive shop, Sea Quest, was really excellent. One of the best dive schools we ever dove with! Fantastic service, great guides and brand new equipment!

Living in busy HongKong we felt to need a break and traveled to Malapascua Island in the Philippines. The island is small, quiet without any traffic and has a very nice beach, just what we were looking for. We stayed at Hippocampus Resort in a deluxe room and that made our holiday almost perfect. The room had no TV (which we did not miss), but had everything else you would expect plus a fantastic location right on the beach and a very nice view from our balcony. Cleanliness is good, staff friendly and food excellent.
We had a couple of dives (which seems to be the main activity on the island) and were fortunate enough to encounter half a dozen of devil rays and even two thresher sharks circling around us for several minutes, great experience! Time ran all too fast, but we hope to return soon.

We stayed at this resort on the beach in Malapascua island, Philippines purely for scuba diving in July 2010, which is low season but nonetheless reasonably busy with tourists.

The island itself has quite limited infrastructure (water, electricity, internet, etc.), but most tourist amenities such as resorts, guest houses and dive shops along the beach appear to cope quite well and provide reasonable service in the circumstances. The scuba diving is amazing and we used 'Sea Explorers' next door to the Hippocampus resort.

Our experience at Hippocampus was rated poor for the following reasons:

- Quality of restaurant and catering: Simply tables and chairs in a covered shack on the beach with a sand floor. Many flies and constant annoyance accordingly. There was very little choice as most dishes on the menu were unavailable. The preparation, cooking and delivery of food was poor,

- Zero TV and poor / unavailable internet service, both in rooms and public areas.

- Management attitude: The resident owner / managers were very 'hands-off'' and left almost all day-to-day operation to apparently unskilled and untrained local staff. Only when we decided to leave early after 3 nights of a pre-booked 6 nights stay did the husband interveen to demand a 'cancellation fee' of the full room rate for 6 nights, less breakfast for 3! Needless to say we refused, whereupon he insisted this was 'industry standard practice' and accused us of being 'unfair'.

Finally it proved impossible to pay the balance of our account by credit card since the resort's terminal was out of service, which staff informed us was not unusual. WE had to be taken to an ATM on the main island of Cebu by the transfer driver in order to pay in cash!

We went to Malapascua purely to see Thresher sharks... which were duly delivered on Christmas day. You have about a 50:50 chance of seeing Threshers on any given day.... so give yourselves at least 3 days on the island to maximise your chances.
The Hippocampus is one of the established resorts on the beach front, making it a short stroll next door to the dive centre. The hotel itself is basic but adequate. We stayed in a room without A?C or hot water and to be honest did not miss either.
We arrived on the 23rd Dec which is right in the middle of the islanders party season. The parties go on until sunrise and are very nosiy... if you can't beat them...join them.
Service at the hotel was very relaxed and you need to just sit back and enjoy the views while you wait for your food or drinks. Having said that, the service is far better than at many neighbouring establishments.

We had booked in advance via internet for a period of 6 days in this resort. When we approached the manager on day 4 to shorten our stay by 2 days since our plans had changed, he forced us to either stay the whole period or pay the full price even if we would not use the room. He told us that we should not have booked for 6 days and he would only let customers go without payment if they dont specify a period in advance. In case you ever consider to book here, never book at this resort several days at once. We stayed in a front seaview room which was ok, however, the beach in front of the resort is not very suitable for swimming due to the seagrass close to the beach and the low water level at low tide. Also the sand is mixed with coral pebbles.

We stayed here for 5 days. Rooms are clean, have AC, wall fan, hot water shower come with decent size balcony. Bathroom is a bit small but ok with us.

Cafe serves wonderful meals with friendly staff. There’s a Devocean dive centre operated there, local DM are knowledgeable and friendly too. If you want hassle free, the dive centre can help you to arrange pick up from Cebu Airport all the way to the island with charges.

Hope to make a trip back there again...

Its a well known place for divers. What you might get from my review is that it retains its good value. Facilities are as good as it can be in malapascua and the vibe , especially around sunset is amazing.also worth mentioning is that you dont get lonely, even if you are solo.

This a a very peacful and quiet resort for those travellers enjoy a relaxing holiday. Room is clean and tidy with balcony, however you need to prepare your toiletries as they provide soap only. It can be understandable for environmental protection and I support this. Food is nice and they can arrange airport pick up for you, cost around 5000 peso including car and boat. It took around 3 hours from Cebu airport to the pier and around 1 hour boat trip to the resort. So be prepared for this. Everything will be well organized for you if you make prior arrangement with the resort.

Private car and boat via the resort was 4,800php. Or local bus 240php (ish) and local ferry 100 php (if they have over 15 people).

Hi there, it takes about 5 hours in total to come from the airport to Hippocampus on Malapascua. Malapascua is at the north tip of Cebu Island. It takes a little bit of time to reach Malapascua, but that is also what makes it so special and creates a vibe of "choosen ones" :) The best method is a private car/van from Cebu airport to Maya Port and then with a boat to Malapascua. It is faster and more comfortable than going by public transfer. We can arrange that easily for you - even with a private boat. Just write us a mail regarding your booking. Cheers and sunny greetings from Malapascua
