Overall, Tango Mar was a very nice experience. The price is little more than I'd normally spend so I had more modern expectations of the room and reception. The hotel itself is tolerably maintained however the extremely dated furnishings, decor, and furniture took me back to the '80's in a way that had us referring to it as The Tropical 'Shining' for that timeline. The look of it was so off putting I was unsure if this was the place I had seen online. The highly redeeming aspects included the room was spacious, a lovely pool swim up bar and easily the nicest beach front and views we had in the area. I can see why so many families return as it's so pretty to look at and imagine if some updating took place it would be truly special. We felt very young and hip as ladies in our forties which might be an indicator of the other patrons.…
We stayed here for 2 nights. The views and beach are gorgeous; sunset from the beach is exquisite! Sunrise from the upper pool with my coffee was a beautiful way to start the day. The rooms are nice sized, but a bit dated. Comfortable and very functional. The restaurant was overlooking the beach, which was very nice. Lots of monkeys on property, both white-faced and howler, which will be an alarm clock! Beautiful birds, too…2 scarlet macaws flew over a few times. Nice hike to waterfall that goes right into the ocean.
42 minutes until our first drinks arrived then had to flag someone down for a second. Food took over 1 1/2 to arrive which like most in our group experinced was COLD. The waiters were working the backsides off it was unfortumate the owner who was present did't step in and assist at the bar. Over priced for small portins . I along with the others in our group will not return. Very disappointing
We went here for dinner tonight! Service, food & surroundings were fantastic! We had walked quite a way to get to the gate of the resort & when we asked how far the restaurant was, we were told - a long way with very uneven road surface so the guy on the gate called reception & let me talk to someone. Well they couldn’t have been more helpful - Cindy arrived in a golf buggy & took us to the restaurant with no problem! So kind of them to do that for us!
We spent three nights at Tango Mar in early January. The hotel staff were all wonderful and epitomized the Costa Rican Pura Vida attitude. This hotel was a bit too far from our other two locations (we came down from Guanacaste’s Conchal area and next went to Arenal) so in retrospect might have found a different middle stop. Compared with our other locations, this hotel was more rugged. Perhaps because it’s operated by a local owner, the resources aren’t there to keep it super updated. Everything was very clean though. The owner, Hilde, made an effort to visit all of her guests at dinner and obviously cared to make our visit special. We took a boat trip to Coru and Tortuga Island snorkeling and hiking which was a lot of fun. The property is at the end of a long dirt road so once you’re on property, it’s tough to get out and explore. You literally feel like you’re at the end of the earth, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you’re looking to totally unplug. All of the meals were delicious and there was plenty to choose from at each meal to satisfy most palates.…
Beautiful boutique resort in the Tambor region with a beautiful (though a little rough) because and delicious food. Everyone from the owner Hilda to the front desk staff (particularly Cindy) to the restaurant servers were friendly and helpful. There was an issue with our room’s toilet and someone was sent right away to fix it. Each dining experience is a little different, with the lunch offering more typical Costa Rican food, and the dinner restaurant offering more European/American options. The hotel organized an excellent tour to local beaches in the Nicoya region and is situated between two short but worthwhile hikes to a lookout and waterfall. Tango Mar offers an elevated but intimate experience compared to other nearby hotels and I would highly recommend it!
Staff was attentive and friendly. Rainy season seas are rough but if you are used to the Pacific Ocean it is no different than any other shorebreak beach. Stayed in a Tiki room. So nice to fall asleep to the waves crashing. Grounds are well kept and very pretty. On top of monkeys there are plenty of critters to see. Get to the waterfall at low tide to swim in the natural pool and check it out at high tide as well. An amazing experience. Included meals are similar to many all inclusive resorts or cruises. Can be good if you pick right. Vegetarian tagliaterre is great.
I live in Costa Rican have wanted to come here for years. After a huge day driving across the ferry we arrived and settled into our room. We then found out there was NO FOOD available until the dinner service! I was travelling with a baby and senior citizen and we here HUNGRY! There were two cooks and a staff member in the restaurant but nope- no food for you until dinner time! No happy hour. Bar closed. No sunset drinks or snacks. Seriously weird. So we drove to a restaurant (had an amazing meal at a much better price). Returned, it was raining. Two staff walked past us as we tried to get to the room with towels on our heads. They had umbrellas! Get to room. Power if off. No emergency lights in the room! What? There's one outside but not in the room. fumbled in the dark and found a tea light candle. My phone went flat so I am in a room with no power, dark and a tiny candle and I have a baby. What a nightmare trying to change a diaper by candlelight! We arrive early to breakfast, nope- you have to wait until 7am- but there's fruit ready. We are the only ones there and I watch the waitress make a huge Starbucks fancy coffee in a tall class. I am wondering who that is for...her of course! She then served herself some food and sat at the desk enjoying her breakfast and chatting to the male waiter. Cringe. So unprofessional. Everything is old. The decor, the buildings. I went upstairs in the reception area and found a really eery abandoned ball room. It's like this place has passed it's hey day. Lucky we had ocean view rooms. I would not like to be in the other rooms that look onto the carpark. No written information in the rooms (except the note to tell you you will be charged if you steal the pool towel). The WIFI system is nuts, every room has a different username and password and they have attached the routers extenders to the palm trees infront of the room with conduit- really ugly look. Room decor is very 90s. Lots of mirrors and weird bamboo things int he corner. Nice towels- but be sure not to steal a pool towel- it will cost you $25! Leaving it was raining and I took four trips to the room to pack car, again un helpful staff just watched me struggle while they walked past with an umbrella- I've never been so jealous of someone having umbrella before this stay! No one cared who we were, where we were from or much else. Eery vibe. We were glad to get out of there! The view from room really lovely, but all the water that runs down the drains goes straight into the beach. Beach not swimmable at all. Oh and on the balcony there is a huge old rambling aircon unit that they attempted to cover (badly) with wood. The pool area really nice, I'll give them that - BUT no hand rail to get in / out and my friend who is 81 really struggled getting in and out. Would I come back? Nope. Was it worth the money? Nope. Was the pool nice? Yup Was the ocean view from the room nice- Yup. Was the staff helpful ? Nope Make your own decision but it's totally outdated and lacks good service. Lots of other great places to stay in this area. I am sad as I wanted to come here for years. Was really let down.…
We are Costa Ricans and my friend had heard about Tango Mar from people who had stayed there so we booked an overnight. The Good: Fantastic view! Obviously an older property with closeness to the beach grandfathered in because new laws make that impossible now. Very nice pool area. Good bed and bedding with nice towels. Pleasant staff. The Bad: Everything else. Not welcoming, no information about the resort - or anything else - in the room, horrible and expensive food, restaurant hours ensure that there are 3 hours during the day when NO food is available and they don't have anything like a snack bar or mini-mart. If you are wililng to pay $200 a night for a comfortable bed and a fabulous view, then this is the place for you. Otherwise, there are much better choices available.…
We stayed at Tango Mar in March 2022, I think our expectation for this resort was too high as a result of the 4 star Giata rating on Trip Advisor. We have done a lot of international travel and from an international perspective this is at best a 3 star resort with 5 star pricing. Put this into context in Costa Rica it may very well be a 4 star resort but for the money I could have stayed at a nicer, better appointed resort anywhere in the Caribbean or Pacific Islands. This is not to say our trip was bad, the resort just didn't meet the price point. We stayed in a Tiki suite, it does have an obstructed ocean view but it is not ocean front; this is difficult to tell from the website but it sits on the resort driveway not the beach. For beach front you will want to stay in the large building that was obstructing our view of the ocean. The furniture in the room is unusable unless you enjoy sitting on church pews that have been designed for maximum discomfort. The mattress on the bed was very hard, about as comfortable as a futon mattress on a hardwood floor. There was a large intentional hole in the shower wall that allowed water to leak from the shower to room with the commode so that every morning you had to wade into a puddle of cold water in the bathroom until housekeeping cleaned it up. Speaking of housekeeping, either they don't tell anyone that stuff needs fixing or the resort manager doesn't care. Besides the whole in the wall, the sink barely drained and was clear it had been that way for a while. The "towel bar" was a $10 Walmart special, it was one of those arches with 4-5 cross bars that unscrew as you roll the towel on or off so the thing was constantly coming apart, the housekeepers would screw it back together by hand everyday so that as soon as you pulled a towel off the bar it would unscrew again. Seriously has no one heard of a screwdriver and thread lock? Last, I don't know if this is a Costa Rican Custom or if the plumbing was really incorrectly designed but there was a sign in the commode room that said to put the toilet paper (yes, including the stuff used to wipe your backside) in the trashcan because the pipes were too small. Yeah makes for a peasant aroma. We were only provided one wash cloth and one face towel a day, we did get two bath towels. We had to ask for additional wash cloth and face towel and the next day they took it away and only provided 1 again. We repeated this request again and the same results the next day, so it seems the expectation is couples share a washcloth and face towel. The in-room coffee maker is a 4 cup unit that takes ~30 minutes to brew a pot of coffee, no lie I have never seen a slower unit in my life. And if you still have an iPhone from before 2010 you're in luck they have an iHome that is bundled up on the counter in a mess of wires just for you. While we were there we couldn't use the beach or swim in the ocean due to Red Tide. Now this isn't an issue the resort can address as it is completely out of their control, but no one at the resort, including the owner ever mentioned to the guests that there was a red tide or that there is a neurological hazard to swimming in red tides. There were no signs indicating that there was a red tide and according to locals the red tide had been happening since January 2022. The Costa Rican Government even includes literature indicating it is unsafe to swim in or eat fish from a red tide. We saw adults actually taking their infants into the ocean right in the heart of the worst portion of the red tide. In regard to food, Costa Rica is not a foodie destination and the food at this resort is indicative of that fact. I would say the food at the resort is very pedantic but served too look nice and over priced. In other words, your grandma made some food and tossed some parsley on it as a garnish and then charged you $25 a plate. The kitchen is visible to guests and is very clean and reminiscent of a commercial kitchen in either Canada or the US. Staff: Super friendly, super helpful as is everyone we interacted with in Costa Rica. I would say the staff's treatment of the guests is the biggest selling point of the resort. Pool: Pool was clean and nice, the pool furniture needed to be replaced a couple of years ago. Most of the pool furniture was wore out, weathered and broken; again an issue for why this isn't a 4 star resort. For the number of guests that were present during our stay there were just enough pool chairs to accommodate everyone, but the resort was not full (I think someone told me they were at ~50% capacity). Sorry this is such a downer review, we did enjoy our stay at Tango Mar but it just didn't meet the price point. we went thinking this resort would be comparable to 4 star resort in a comparable destination but it wasn't and that fact just can't be ignored.…
