I stayed in one of the four Suite Villas which included an adjoining room or space w couch, etc. The hotel has lots of pluses including outstanding views of the pacific and sunsets, villas all to yourself, your own private plunge pool and sun deck w chaise loungers, chairs, table and outdoor sofa, warm and caring staff, an excellent restaurant w equal views to the rooms, infinity pool w view, chaise loungers and other seating, WiFi and the opportunity to escape via its location and deliberate absence of television. The negative would be lack of any shade whatsoever in your villa facing the pacific; no umbrellas for your private deck and pool area. After 12 noon the sun is typically unrelenting until it sets around 6 pm. If you are prone to sunburn etc you are likely to suffer here if you don’t lather up the sunscreen and keep reapplying. You can go to the infinity pool and use one of three available umbrellas after 12 noon or later; the other seating at the infinity pool will be in the sun by 2 pm. Most all excursions take some time to travel to from this location; there’s lots to do but most are well over an hour to reach. This was an ideal locale during Covid-19 times. All practiced safe protocols, you share no hallways or elevators, the restaurant is all open air and the hotel provided required COVID testing prior to departure flights back to the USA. I included the Food and Wine package which included cooking class, mixology class, tortilla making class, breakfast daily, credit to room for food and wine as well as transportation to and from the airport LIR... enjoyed it all and a good choice for us.

Having never written a Trip Advisor review before, our stay at Casa Chameleon has warranted my first one. It's difficult to fully describe the incredible experience and beauty of this hotel and their staff, as it's like no other. From the moment we arrived, we were on a first name basis with almost everyone we came into contact with, and were treated with first class service. Anthony and William were amazing with quickly getting our car when needed and providing golf cart rides to and from Las Catalinas down the road!
We were truly blown away by the hotel staff, who were extremely accommodating and pleasant to get to know. A special shout out to Bryan who waited on us poolside, making sure we always had what we needed (sometimes before we even knew we needed it!) and was someone we looked forward to greeting us each morning. He went above and beyond to ensure our stay was a magical one.
They did not cut a single corner on any part of the experience or aesthetics of the hotel, from ensuring you always had a drink in hand to providing sunscreen and cucumber infused water by the pool. The rooms are impeccable, with stunning private views of the ocean, our own plunge pool, and the most gorgeous glass shower opening up to the outdoor patio. The hotel's infinity pool overlooks the ocean providing a spectacular view of the sunset in the evenings, at which time the staff lights up the pool with flames to create the most breathtaking experience.
What we did not expect was how blown away we would be by the amazing food provided by the hotel restaurant, Sentido Norte. By far this is one of the best hotel restaurants we've ever eaten in - from the food itself, to the presentation, to the ambiance. And of course, the staff in the restaurant were also incredible. Carlos always made sure we had everything we needed and that we were having a best in class dining experience.
I cannot recommend Casa Chameleon enough and am already planning our next visit!

Mr Robert and Mr Barry had a wonderful vacation at Casa Chameleon! What a stunning location! Pure luxury without going over the top.
Our suite (19) was so relaxing to be in that we hardly left it. Breakfasts were very good (avocado toast and breakfast burrito our favourites). Dinners were excellent. The best ceviche I have ever tasted, I think I ordered it 4 times in 5 days?? The optional asado (BBQ) was a lovely way to meet new people and enjoy traditional food. The bar area can get busy at sunset, as the restaurant and bar are open to the public (but the pool is not). The bartenders do some great cocktails - try the Guanacaste Mule if you like ginger root. So good!
The resort is an easy walk to the beach and village of Las Catalinas, but if you don't feel like walking, staff will happily take you down by golf buggy. You can also get a taxi service to other towns nearby where there are restaurants.
If you like mountain biking, do the free tour. You'll not travel far, it only takes a couple of hours and you'll get to see the area from different viewpoints. It isn't that hard a ride, but can get tricky if you are not used to riding trails. I hadn't been on a bike in 2 years but managed OK. Hiking is also available from the resort, from 30 minutes to up to 3 hours.
All staff were wonderful....we can't remember everyone's names but we will try:
Alexander, Edgar, Eduardo, Eyner, Franklin, Glen, Jose (both of you),
Luis Diego, Manuel, Mariela, Mario, Will...Plus all those we cannot remember! While everyone speaks very good English, they appreciated our feeble efforts at Spanish :)
Also our driver to and from the resort was excellent...sorry we can't remember his name!
We slept very well, enjoyed listening to the geckos at night and watching the hummingbirds and parrots during the day, as well as pelicans diving for sardines down at the beach.
January is the beginning of the dry season, a good time to visit. Not too hot and humid. Hilltop location can get windy at times but villas are well sheltered. The gardens are nicely manicured and adds to the ambiance (the gardeners do a great job).
Room service was fast an efficient and housekeeping very polite and friendly (a special thank you to Ericka for looking after our suite so well).
All in all, we highly recommend a stay at Casa Chameleon and really hope we can get back some time in the next few years.

This was our first experience staying at Casa Chameleon Hotel at Las Catalinas. Matthew brought our luggage in and ensured they were taken to the suite. Ariel was exceptional and he took us through the check-in process seated comfortably in a well decorated lobby while we enjoyed sweet coconut water from the source, a refreshing coconut branded with the hotels name and logo. We slowly sipped the refreshing sweet water through a bamboo straw. That was the beginning of our best vacation experience yet. The rooms were exceptionally put together, canopy bed, chocolate covered strawberries, private infinity pool and views of the Catalinas islands graciously rising from the Pacific. This kind of space provides for an intimate vacation that can only bring you much closer to your love. Anthony took us down to the beach at Las Catalinas and we were impressed with his politeness and professional attitude. We talked with the staff like old friends and we will never forget them. I hope to be back home soon at Casa Chameleon at Las Catalinas.

The view from your room-or anywhere in the hotel for that matter, is simply breathtaking. Not only is there a cascading pool in the main area but in your bedroom as well. Everything is strategically placed for your benefit and staff are always willing to lend a helping hand.
William was very helpful at check-in and assured that our car and bags were taken care of upon arrival.
At Breakfast, Ariel was alway a friendly face with a cheerful spirit. Want something light for breakfast? Try the wrap, you won’t be disappointed.
Each night at dinner, Luis and Andrès were always very knowledgeable about the menu and made sure that everyone at the table were comfortable and taken care of.
I’d often see the manager, Elquin, walking about to make sure that everything was always in order
Eyner
I just say that the chefs Felix, Jose, and
Marco (Suse Chef) always aimed to please and never disappointed. The meals they prepared were AMAZING!! You don’t want to pass up an opportunity.
You can’t go wrong with a place like this. Relaxing, friendly staff, great food... what more can you ask for?

This is trully the paradise, I visited the hotel with my husband during the Covid-19 pandemic and it was just what we needed.
It was a time to relax and step away from the all the bad things that were happening in the world.
They had a cleaning protocol for you since the first moment you arrived, they cleaned my bags, took my temperature and then they gave us a cleaning kit with face maks and alcohol for us to used during the stay,
In the Sentido Norte restaurant, they took us temperature during the breakfast time.
I felt safe and in harmony with nature.
Besides all that the way Paola and Willian treated us was like royalty.
I highly recommend this hotel!

From the moment you arrive at Casa Chameleon at Las Catalinas you see the incredible views. Everyone who works there is so friendly and inviting to share the beauty that this ideal location in Costa Rica provides. We stayed at Villa #3 and it had great views of Sugar Beach and the Mountains behind them. The outdoor lanai had an great plunge pool and very comfortable lounge chairs. The sunsets at the infinity edge pool high above the Pacific Ocean are stunning and unforgettable. During breakfast and lunch you can just enjoy the everyday view from the bar overlooking a 360 degree view of the Ocean and undeveloped mountains. The landscaping is phenomenal and the entire property is extremely well maintained but also cared for. Chef Jose Lopez provided one of my top ten meals all time with the Asado BBQ, it was so good we had it twice while we stayed. It is very easy to walk to either beautiful beach that surround the property and into the charming town of Las Catalinas. We cannot say enough about what a wonderful trip and stay. We will definitely be back again and we have recommended Casa Chameleon to all of our family, co-workers and friends.

Sentido Norte is restaurant and bar at Casa Chameleon Las Catalinas, offers Costa Rican cuisine. I do not understand the bad reviews of this restaurant. My fiance and I rented a villa in Las Catalinas recently and ate there found it to be very good. All entrees and main courses were excellent! The service were A+. Sitting, panaromic view combined with service makes this place unique & SO romantic. They made a beautiful special cake for my birthday...everything was perfecto!

Just returned from a week’s stay here and thoroughly enjoyed it. The villas are as advertised - very private with amazing ocean views. The terrace had our own plunge pool, lounger, lounge bed, and table and chairs. The exterior space was probably the same size as the interior space, which would normally be great, but it was the wet season so the bugs were relentless (just to keep in mind). If you picked up lunch or ordered room service, there was almost no reason to go to the pool, although that was also delightful, with a breathtaking infinity pool, good food and drinks, and attentive service.
A clear glass wall/sliding door separates the shower from the terrace, which might not be everyone’s taste. Also, the wall between the bathroom and the bedroom only goes halfway up i.e. not to the ceiling, so keep that in mind if you are a “shy” bathroom user. The bed was very comfortable, and I appreciated the in-room coffee maker and tea kettle. The property was beautiful but starting to show its age. The fixtures in our room could have used some updating or replacing. The streaky film on the mirror behind the bed did not suggest “luxury”.
The staff could not have been friendlier. They all seemed to enjoy their jobs and it showed. There are too many to name, but I remember Scarleth, Anthony, Ariel and William. They were all wonderful and accommodating.
The breakfast (included) was plentiful and delicious. I don’t think we had a single bad meal. The lunch and dinner were also amazing. I would only say the dinner portions were a little small, and the food down the road at Ponciana was just as good or better but less expensive.
We were in room 20 (Potrero), which had amazing views of the sea, but was down several stairs, so it may not be ideal for people who have trouble climbing stairs.

Grumpyfiftysomething asked a question Aug 2024
London, United Kingdom48 contributions38 helpful votesWe have booked for January 2025 but only just noticed the warning about construction at Casa Chameleon. Does anyone have a sense of how bad this will be - I only realised after booking that the hotel have given a reduction on the room rate during this period (possibly suggesting that tour operators are put off by the risk of unhappy clients)
Dear Grumpyfitysomething,
We would like to inform you that our construction is expected to be completed by December 2024. However, please note that the neighboring town of Las Catalinas, adjacent to our hotel, is undergoing expansion. While our work will be finished, there may still be some construction sounds from the nearby area.
To ensure your comfort, we are proactively blocking any rooms that may be directly affected by noise during this period.
We hope this addresses your concerns. If you have any further questions or need assistance with anything else, please feel free to reach out
Hotel Manager,
Casa Chameleon, Las Catalinas.
As far as construction noise, we have not been at the hotel since January. I know they have home lots to be built on the Las Castalinas side( sunset). but it was pre construction. If you refer to the building going on in the town, I do not notice it.
We stay on the sunrise side of the hotel, which does not have any construction going on. We like that side much better because the afternoon sun is brutal on the west facing units. The east side has a nice view of the bay on that side and beaches. We go to the pool at sunset to have a drink .
We rent a car each year when we go. It is an hour drive and pretty straight foward. If you dont like crossing a stream that is usually running fast, avoid the Monkey Trail road. If you follow Waze it will take you another way. It is 20 minutes longer. Having a car is not cheap but it allows you to explore the area and the different beaches and resturants.
The town of las Catalinas is cute, but other than routine touris type restuatantsnot much there. The beach is not that nice. The bike and hiking shop there is excellent and their coffee is great. The hills around Las Catalinas are fantastic for hiking and mountain biking. There are miles and miles of trails and we have aleays found them safe.
The better beaches are just south of the hotel through through Tamarindo. Have not explored beaches north of Las Catalinas. I think there are some good ones and will try them next year.
There are some good restuarants in Playa Flamingo and Pertero. For a special treat try the Castle on the hill that overviews the area. Great food, fantastic views and a wonderful story. They only seat 15 guests an evening so you need to make reservations ahead of time. You go there about an hour before sunset for a tour and cocktails on the top of the Castle. Afetr sunset, you are seated for dinner. ask the front desk at Casa Chameleon to make the reservation for you. I would suggest you take the option to have the resturant or a local driver bring you there. It is a very challanging road, mostly gravel to the top where the restuarant is.
In the past when we have gone on excursions we always used local tour companies that we arranged on our own.Depends on what you are interested in. There are plenty of tour company's.
If this is the only place you are visiting in Costa Rica, you can take day long trips to different volcanos in the interior (Arenal is just one). Plenty of zip lines places etc. If your moving around the country, I would focus on the beaches in the area and do the other things depending on what regions you are visiting.
