We just got back from Occidental and they advertise that they are a 5 star adult only resort. It does not live up to that claim at all. The grounds are kept nice and clean the hotel rooms are plain and dated but clean. Our room did not have AC for two days and so they finally moved us to another room because they couldn’t fix the AC. The bed was super hard kind of like sleeping on a concrete slab with plywood on top of it. The two pools were fine and the bartenders down at the swim up bar were hysterical. Just be careful they will keep lining up shots.
Now onto the food. The food was awful. Not at all what you would expect from a five star resort. It only has two restaurants open at breakfast and lunch and both of them had terrible food. If you want to go here I would suggest eating in town at Coca Beach lots of great restaurants and bars there. If you plan to eat at the Japanese or Italian restaurants make sure you make reservations as soon as you arrive because they are both so tiny. When we finally got in the Italian restaurant they were turning other people away saying they were full yet multiple tables were left empty for an hour and a half.
The stairs are crazy here. Do not go here if you have limited mobility or a bad knee or you are out of shape. Just getting from your room to the beach and back up again is a workout. Then getting from your room to any of the restaurants is another workout.
The beach is tiny and surrounded by trees labeled poisonous do not touch leaves or fruit.
This resort also did not seem to understand their guests. Most of the people we saw were 60 and over. However the tiny disco bar only played American dance/rap music. They kept trying to get people to come in the bar but no one wanted to go in that tiny room with music blaring that was not appropriate for the age group present. They did have a saxophone player one night that was really good and most everyone enjoyed sitting around the lobby listening to him.
Most of the people that worked there were nice but don’t expect to able to communicate unless you speak Spanish.
Beware of the gift shop the prices tend to change.
Overall it was about a 3 star resort if you go with a big group it easy to find everyone and hang out together. Just plan on dining and entertainment somewhere other than the resort.

We paid for premium room upgrade which was in most aspects not worth the extra money other than we had free wifi in our room. The room was okay, there is a lot of wear and tear on items in the room such as the shower knob adjustment and bathroom light didnt work. Even though we tipped maid service it was terrible. They were supposed to stock fridge everyday with 2 waters, 2 sodas and 2 beers...that rarely happened and one day we were only given one shower towel. The food at this all inclusive was terrible except for the main buffet at breakfast. The italian restaurant which we had to make reservations for in advance was awful. Some of the staff were great and very helpful while others acted like we were a bother. The beach was okay however the public access runs right into it so most days it was packed. The pool with the swim up bar closes at 5:00pm and there is very little nightlife after 8pm. The only bar open afer 11 is the disco. Thankfully we rented a car and drove into Coco Beach several nights which has a ton to do and is only a 15 minute drive. The resort itself is a 20 minute drive from Liberia airport and thr view of papagayo bay is amazing. Very happy with location just really disappointed overall with the hotel. We will be looking at other options when we go back to costa rica.

Grand Occidental Papagyao, what a pli9ace, what a feeling.

This all inclusive resort on the pacific side of Costa Rica truly lives the local saying pura vida (the pur life). I am now a full 24 hours in country and on resort and it has become a favorite location in the world for me.

When I, and the party of 4, I’m traveling with arrived at the airport yesterday morning we cleared customs collected our bags, had them xrayed, and then we were street side. We had booked a car to take us from airport to resort prior to leaving, however we arrived early and he arrived late. While waiting in the “Transport area" a cab driver noted our obvious concern. He approached and asked if he could help. What we expected was the hard sell and cab jacking, nope, he called the fellow we were supposed to meet to ensure he was enroute and ok. This was the first experience of pura vida we encountered.

We arrived at resort a full 6 hours before check in and again we were met with people who only wanted to make sure our experience was truly one of relaxation. The check in policy is 3 PM and they “couldn’t “ change that but they took our luggage, gave us our wrist bands, and poof we were at the buffet filling ourselves with culinary fair. Second up the pool with a cool beverage to wash away the travel day we had had.
So is everything perfect in paradise? Listening to other travelers not necessarily. I have heard complaints such as “the staff won't do the things I’m asking” or “ they just don’t hustle like in Mexico" These “complaints" are accurate but unjustified. The staff don’t hustle, they don’t pressure, they don’t step outside the rules. This is not Mexico, this is Costa Rica and the people are laid back living the pura vida life.
When I travel I try my best to engage with staff, I ask them how long they have been with ???? or were they born and raised in the area. Last evening at the buffet was Costa Rican fare and I asked our server for a traditional Costa Rican cocktail. Still can’t pronounce it but it was delicious. With this in mind I find the staff enjoy my company more and I have a far better experience.
The rooms are clean, air conditioned, and well kept. There are some idiosyncrasies, the shower took a whole lot of time to figure out where the hot water was comfortable and the couple, my wife and I are traveling with, are having some issues with the toilet tank not filling properly. Today we requested additional coffee packets in our room and were told it was only one pack per day. Went to the room after housekeeping and found 2 coffee packets. Huh??? Policy vs relationship.
So there it is. It may only be mid day through day 2 but I think the Pura Vida life is the life I would like to more emulate. I can learn so much from the Costa Rican people and know this is a fantastic holiday for people to relax.

Spent four nites at this outstanding resort and regretted not having planned a longer stay

As a solo traveler I always felt safe and well cared for.

Due to mobility issues, I always took the jitneys around the resort and never waited more than five minutes for one to arrive

Ordered room service the late afternoon I arrived and although there was an eight dollar charge for a cheeseburger deluxe, it was very tasty and well prepared

A call to maintenance for new batteries for tv remote was answered within five minutes

Water pressure in shower was great with lots of hot water

And the food..... everything was delicious
From custom prepared omelets for breakfast to dinner at the a la carte restaurants. For reasons unknown to me (and I didn’t question it) I was able to get reservations twice at the Italian and once at the Oriental within the four nites I was there. Outrageous food at both places
A must try: the eggplant ravioli at the Italian.
Both restaurants were sparsely attended at the eight o clock time slot that I was there
Majority of people were at dinner buffet
I never tried lunch or dinner buffet so I cannot comment but it’s worth it to try to go to the a la carte restaurants as often as they will allow you to. A great surprise!!!!

Never went to the large pool so I cannot comment. I favored the small pool where it was quiet and laid back. During windy days there were a few small leaves in pool but nothing that interferes with the enjoyment of it. There were bees/wasps buzzing near entrance to pool that resort needs to pay attention to

Had two massages on the beach with Gladys. Absolutely wonderful can’t describe experience of being pampered to the sounds of screech monkeys in the trees

Listened to the violin player at the open air lobby after dinner one night. Very enjoyable

Rooms were NOT up to par with a five star resort but had everything one would need.
Beds were comfortable but room lacked the over the top luxury of other resorts I have stayed at. I stayed in building 20.
Very quiet. Never heard neighbors. Large patio to relax on. Room was clean and refrigerator stocked daily with two beers, two waters and two sodas. I was able to get additional soda as needed upon request

As I write this, it is 25 degrees here in northern NJ and I miss the warm sunshine and friendliness of the staff at this resort
I hope to come back here again and again!!!

We have never visited a resort prior to our stay but this seems to be a great option if you like the resort atmosphere-buffets, alcohol, and general relaxation. Clean room, mini bar stocked daily, wildlife opportunities-howler monkeys, birds, kayak and snorkel tours included, extra tours available to book through Jacamar. Fun beach and pool hangout areas. Staff are friendly for the most part. Valeria was nicw and the activities team tries to make a fun and inviting environment for everyone. Only suggestions are to label vegetarian options at meals and some softer sheets.

This resort is a good place to go to relax. I would not recommend it for people that have trouble walking due to the size of the complex. There is a shuttle to bring you around but I prefer to walk. The main dinning room was a 10 min walk from my room and although the food was good it was mostly the same day after day. There was no beverage service by the pool for the six days I was there, You had to walk into the snack area to get a drink and there was no beverage service on the beach so you would have to take a walk up to the lower pool to get a drink. The activities by the pool were few and far between. The use of kayak boats by the beach had to be ordered a day in advance and were canceled both times I booked them. Snorkeling was the same but we were able to go on the second day.Although the staff was great I think there is much need for improvement for the resort. Also there is an Italian,Asian, and a grill.that you cannot book ahead of time .You must book the morning of starting at 8 am .and they are usually booked up by 9 and this is just what I want to do on vacation is rush out of bed 7:45 to get on line by 8 to book a reservation.

each day beat the day before for worst meal ever. If you don't mind starving this is the all inclusive for you. The food was so bad that my friends and I reviewed it by labeling items as edible vs inedible with edible being the highest possible compliment. that being said, the grounds are very pretty. The rooms are big. Everyone had trouble with their in room safes but the repair person is kind and comes to the room each time. the staff in general is really nice and helpful. There is no usable beach as it is a public beach, very narrow, and taken up by locals with radios, large families (although no children are allowed at the resort), hammocks and bar-b-ques. The water is nice though for swimming and snorkeling. If you keep the snorkeling equipment more than one hour you are charged $200. There are many beautiful resorts in Costa Rica. You can definitely do better with your money.

Dear Jacquack Although we sincerely regret your disappointment with your stay in our Occidental Papagayo, we would like to thank you for sharing your comments as it will help us to identify areas of concern and act immediately so as to enhance our future guest's experience among us. Thank you for your very nice compliments for our team, they do work very hard every day to make sure our guests feel well attended to at all times and definitely are an asset to our hotel. We will certainly relay your praising comments to all of them and we are sure they will be pleased to know their efforts have been appreciated. All the beaches in Costa Rica are public and is very common to see local people here. Here in the bay of the Papagayo Peninsula a visit to any of the beaches very much depends on the state of the tides. It is best to visit the beach at low tide in order to experience it at its best. We regret that you felt the quality or variety of our culinary options did not meet your expectations. Apart from our specialty restaurants, we strive to offer a broad selection of international dishes in order to suit all tastes and to provide our guests with an enjoyable dining experience. It is unfortunate that we did not get the chance to discuss all of these matters directly with you in resort so we could have improved your vacation experience. We are always open to suggestions from our guests. Thank you again for your visit and constructuve critics, our primary goal being to assure our guests feel comfortable and fully enjoy their visits, we are eager to regain your confidence during another occasion if you gave us that chance. Kind regards, Raúl Arranz General Manager Occidental Papagayo

If you want some peace and quiet, this is your vest option. I stayed at the master premium suite that includes an amazing bath, jacuzzi on the terrace, and a golf cart specially for your room. These rooms are far from everything, but with the cart it is quite easy to move around the property. The pool near the ocean is the best. It has shade throughout the day, it doesnt hace annoying loud music (if that is your preference the pool by the snack bar is your best option as that one has the loud music and activities). The personnel in general are very kind and attentive to your requests. The food is good, not that many options kn the snak bar which is where lunch is served. There, they offer at least 3 meat choices, 3 different types of salad, fast food such as hot dogs, burgers, pizza, nachos, etc. Drinks are great. Shout out to David the bartender. His drinks are good and he is great. Great views from the premium bar! Overall grest experience. Make sure you leave the terrace doord closed with the lock, the racoons know how to open the terrace doors (added picture). They will NOT attack you!... they're just looking for food.
Pros: drinks, peace, quiet, ocean with no waves, amazing views. Room 901 is great. Room service included with that room and they were FAST and very friendly. Golf cart was a hoot. With premium room also: you can dine at the specialty restaurants every night.
Cons: one lady from front desk was rude (all the rest were great), housekeeping seems to be understaffed. They cleaned our room towards late afternoon (5ish PM) we had to request some towels to be exchanged given that the lady did not exchange then while cleaning.
Will return.

Spent four days here, booked a premium level suite directly through Barcelo, comes with added benefits. Nice property, decent food, good service. Everything went as I had expected. Probably only negative would be very spotty or poor WIFI in the room, very happy will all other aspects of the resort, transportation, premium level.

Our room had a great view of the ocean, but we kept finding out that certain things weren't included in our 'all inclusive' stay. If you don't need wifi and you don't mind being on their schedule with limited time slots to schedule things, then you would like this place. Perfect for seniors/retired ages. Food isn't available between 5pm and 6:30pm and a lot of people get hungry at this time for dinner. Many people were standing around waiting for the dinner buffet to open. There were gaps in the service schedule where they weren't available at the front desk. When they were there, they were very friendly and helpful. We had asked for towels twice and never received them. You also have to wear one of those plastic bracelets the whole time. We were staying in one of the higher-end rooms and I feel if you're going to pay more, then at least the wifi should have been included. Won't go back and don't recommend to any of our friends 50 years old or younger.

Have stayed there 3 times with number 4 coming in two weeks. There are two buildings that overlook the pool area, and are standard rooms. The remainder of buildings go steadily higher up the hill overlooking the bay, and premium rooms are included in those. We have stayed in a first club room that was not a suite, but it was next to a suite in the same building overlooking the bay. Very nice!

Hi, we stayed in suite 901 high up approx 112 steps however we did have a buggy throughout our stay! It's about a 10/15 minute walk up from reception area, away from main hotel room blocks so very peaceful! There are stunning views out over the bay from a very large terrace which also has a Jacuzzi tub! The suite is very spacious & comfortable, I would definitely recommend upgrading!
