The minute you step out onto your balcony and look down at the resort - WOW! beautiful grounds, and easy to just go out onto the beach to have a walk there too. The breakfast was excellent and in such a beautiful tropical setting. The staff are fabulous. And make sure you join in all the activities that are on offer. The volleyball comp every day is worth the laugh. though the water aerobics class wasn't that fabulous. Great that there is a guest laundry onsite but the tokens for this are quite expensive, Was very good that the hotel did temperature screening everytime you walked in.
Great location with the night street stalls at your back door, Though it was hard to find somewhere different to eat at each night
Totally will be back and next time for a longer stay

We stayed in a room on the 5th floor which was really very old, bathtub was completely yellow and closets were cracked. There was also quite some noise from the road and from the nearby mosque. We asked then to get another room for which we had to pay more but at least the facilities were newer and it looked more like a 5 star hotel room.
Wifi was quite poor everywhere in the resort and service was generally quite slow (food counter at the pool side was left unmanned quite often so difficult to order food and drinks, and nobody was going around the tables to get orders). Food was otherwise good and new years’ eve was really well organised at the beachside of the hotel, we all had a great party until 1am.
The pool facilities and kids club activities were amazing and my kids had an excellent time! They also provide babysitting services but they do not allow the children to leave the hotel rooms. I asked to speak to the manager to sign a responsibility disclaimer and allow the babysitter to go with my 2yr old to the kids’ zone in the hotel premises as he would go nuts staying locked up in a small room but they still refused...
This resort is definitely more recommended for families with younger children up to 12yrs old.

This is our 2nd time back to GS in 2 years, and we are greatly disappointed by the aging of the property and deteriorating service quality.

While the staff is generally still friendly, we are missing the genuine client centric hospitality we experienced last time. When i called the operators for a few requests, she was in a hurry to hang up before i even finished explaining my first concern. It may be personal, based on my past good experiences, many staff seems to be in a rush to move onto something else instead of focusing on the situation on hand.

Secondly, there is a person with bike giving out free nut every evening. The problem is the person not only give out free nuts to human but also to pigeons which often gather in tremendous number. Then kids/ other customers start to chase and feed these pigeons. Thus at times if you sit in a “wrong” area, it can be not only annoying but also very dangerous. I absolutely do not understand how can a hotel like GS allow such unruly and dangerous practice - are they not aware of bird flu and have to risk inviting more virus? Some pigeons even start drinking from hotel pool!! To top this up, guests also feed the pigeons with bread and other food, and hotel makes no effort to stop this kind of unhygienic and disturbing behavior on their property.

For room service, we had to wait more than 1 hour and called twice to follow up, and every time the staff simply tell us “it’s on the way” and then hang up.

Lastly, many groups of adult customers are very loud, into the small hours of the night, and i was awakened by shouts in the hallway few times at 2 or 3 am !!!!! While security responded quickly to such complaints, it doesn’t always solve the problem when the type of people who resides have no respect for others.

There are many more other incidents during our 1 week stay, which makes us rule out this hotel for any future trip to Penang.

I am still giving it 3 star instead of 1 star because the Bell boys, and restaurants staff are still extremely nice and some go out of the way to help us.

We stayed for 2 nights during weekdays and the place were still pretty crowded with people. The room is clean and nicely fit our small family. The housekeeping team were very helpful when we requested for sweeping floor due to beach sand overloaded in the room. And the breakfast were buffet style but the warm and cheerful team helped you scooped the food in your plate. The swimming pool is huge and still plenty of room to play around. We also received nice cake for our anniversary. Overall stay was good and will consider staying again in the future.

Be careful and confirm your breakfast is included, in writing. My breakfast was confirmed by the manager upon check-in (and he even pointed out twice on checkin where I go for breakfast) but when I checked out they tried to charge me actually for two breakfasts a day, even though I was only one person. When I challenged that my breakfast was included and asked to see the manager he would not come out of the office. I did manage them to reduce my breakfast to just one person, after some resistance and another trip to the hiding manager. The clerk acted like she had a gotten a great deal for me by reducing the breakfast to one person, even though i booked solo and checked in solo and passed the reception numerous times solo throughout my stay. Sorry, but this is the kind of thing that can make you feel pretty darned sour.

Had I known I had to pay for breakfast I would have walked across the street to grab a bite for a 5th the price. I don't eat much for breakfast, and 65 Ringit for a coffee and a pastry is not my idea of a good deal.

Unfortunately a bad ending to an otherwise OK stay at this aging resort. They make you put a 200 Ringit deposit on your room and I suppose this is the way they try and keep as much of that as possible. The fact the manager himself hid from me was unacceptable in my opinion, and I would be very hard pressed to recommend this hotel. It is not so much an issue with the money itself, I could afford it, but the morals of tricking a patron into believing breakfast was included and then turning it around like that in my eyes is highly questionable business practices, especially for the calibre of a Shngrila hotel.

Lastly I asked if I could get a sea view, as the occupancy seemed quite low. The manager said no but I will give you a mountain view. This ended up being at the very end of the hotel, facing a small lot and cleaning equipment and no view of any mountains.

Golden Sands Resort by Shangri-la exceeded my expectations of a 4* resort by giving genuine 5* service from the heart. The front office team and duty manager Ranjit and Fernandez did a great job managing guest relation and enhancing guest experiences. Breakfast service was amazing with local Malaysian kampung theme setting with Vijay and his team. Food quality is subpar for Shangri-la standard but is a pass for a 4* establishment.

As a frequent Shangri-la Stayer room expectiaitons is one of the upmost important. Overall, room satisfactory was below expectations. stains were found on the bed. blood markings were obvious, feathers from the duvet was spread across the bed. Mold can be found under the bathtub tap area. Housekeeping team were found walking in the walkway not wearing face masks, chatting with each other, while cleaning the rooms, which is a big NO at this challenging time. If resort requires guests to comply with Covid 19 SOP, staffs no matter which position should be complying as well, especially the housekeeping team whom is in charged of hygiene standards.

Overall, I cancelled my upcoming stay and decided to extend my night with Rasa Sayang instead. A great resort with much potential with pristine location and service team but fall short with the rundown facilities, amenities and housekeeping room services.

The first time we’ve ever visited a hotel that could not supply pool towels for a large potion of one of the days, possibly because the hotel was catering for a cruise ship while trying to cater for its capacity hotel, not good. Once towels were available they were threadbare & washed out. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were the same towels we received the last time we stayed at the hotel, in 2012!!
Food at poolside bar was well below the standard you’d expect at a 4* hotel. We found the food at the tiny local beach cafe next door far higher standard and a third the price.
Drinks are overpriced for the standard of resort, service and facilities. The Happy Hour was uninviting with little discount and the taste of the cocktails meant we never ordered two of the same type (we tried them all and then decided to drink your overpriced beer).
The hotel, although pleasant is tired and in need of rejuvenation. The beach bar has the potential to draw in outside drinkers but I’d imagine this rarely happens.
The breakfast was also poor, 1 out of 3 days we decided to simply eat elsewhere.

First visit to the Golden Sands in 12 years with my partner, initially experienced a few check in problems that were not the fault of the hotel but required us to spend the first few nights at the Rasa next door ( wow now that is 5*).

Positives: Still loved to pool and garden areas that were well staffed and maintained. Rooms spacious and kept clean with excellent friendly staff. A very safe environment due to very smart looking and friendly security staff.

Negatives: The hotel now caters for families which we were well aware of when we booked but I feel this is now detrimental to both Australian and European guests who were certainly in the minority.
The dining room for breakfast I feel tries to reflect that child friendly image but for me, often gave the impression of a cross between the boxing day sales ( very busy with some very rude people pushing and shoving to fill their plates with as much food as possible) and a Wackey warehouse where very young children often ran amok climbing on furniture, wandering round spilling food everywhere often looking for a lost mum or dad. To add to the unpleasant atmosphere everyday classical piano music was played for some reason.
We booked for mountain view room and unfortunately forgot about the mosque within the grounds which gives you a daily call starting around 05.15 every day!

Pool side bar that was generally empty due both to the clientele and the over inflated price of alcoholic drinks.

I don't wish to be too negative of the hotel as I'm sure families with young children who enjoy early nights will love the place.

As for the resort of Batu Ferringhi I am afraid to say had very little to offer us and I feel a lack of investment again aimed at the European and Australian tourist market leaves it with only a handful of restaurants all offering a very similar menu ( most of which were adequate). Only 1 bar the Bora Bora seems to appreciate that many people do enjoy a drink in pub like surroundings where you can sit on the beach and watch the sunset for example.
Fighting your way through a very busy shopping alley offering fake clothing, handbags and cheap imported electrical devices is not for me. Lots of empty spaces that we were told had plans to build on in the near future but I don't think catering for tourists such as myself will be a priority.
Not a lot to say about the beach sorry! poor for swimming, very few people on the beach due to a lack of beach side cafe / restaurants and to be honest picking up pieces of glass was probably the highlight for me.

This is indeed a great resort. I would certainly give it an excellent remarks if not because of one flaw...well according to my view really. I am very particular when commenting on the rooms and this includes the toilet as well. A lot of modern class Hotel nowadays have shower cubicle rather than bath tub. To include the European taste ,some do have bath tub and shower cubicle. It is safer for old travelers to shower on the non slippery surface. However one to note that the water pressure at the shower head is also not sufficient.
The rest ,is perfect. A comfortable bed and pillow ,great coffee house with a wonderful view....and great pools as well. But hopefully in future the pool keepers can be stricter as I notice even customers with football jersey can jump into the main pools. A standard must be adhered too atleast.

My family and I decided to try this hotel out because of the good reviews. We were sadly disappointed. The staff aren’t very friendly.
The food at breakfast was so so. The guy at the egg counter was so rude and unpleasant. The only friendly people at breakfast was the uncle making the roti canai and one other Indian aunty. There was a huge cockroach amongst the plates . When pointed out to the staff, their reactions was rather surprising. No one apologised.
The car park is not covered. They say there is a buggy available , but many times I found my self walking after parking my car.
The pool area was good and the kids had a great time . While we were at the beach , saw someone else get stung by jellyfish . There is a big sign that says beware of jellyfish.
The housekeeping staff also seem new and untrained.
The location is good in the sense that you can walk out and get lots of food.
I’m very sure I will not be staying at this hotel again. I think it gives Shangri- La a bad name.

Water is offered free in your room. There are taps everywhere and showers by the pool. If you want bottled water in the restaurants then you need to pay!

Yes, hair dryer is in the bathroom or the closet area along with an iron and ironing board. If they aren't in the room, you can request housekeeping to bring them as they are standard. They also have self-serve laundry and dryer. It's not cheap compared to those down the road but it's a large load and you can wait in your room or in the pool!
