The cheap hotels were booked when we visited Dumaguete in November, so we considered ourselves fortunate to have found a vacancy at JF Obdulia’s Business Inn. As there were no more standard and deluxe rooms available, we took a suite at 1,500 PhP a night. The amount was – in my opinion – quite steep, considering that some locals earn only 6,000 PhP a month. Anyway, here’s a run-down of my impression of the hotel:

LOCATION. JF Obdulia’s Business Inn offers a good base for exploring Dumaguete City on foot. The hotel is sited prominently close to Cathedral Church, Quezon Park, Tops and Bottoms, and the public market. The Rizal Boulevard and the downtown area are a leisurely stroll away. If you don’t want to walk, you can always hail a pedicab – no matter what time of the day or night it is.

Tip: To get to the hotel, tell the driver to take you to “the gas station across Cathedral.” JF Obdulia’s Business Inn and the gasoline station belong to the same corner lot and block, although locals would probably remember the gasoline station more than the lengthy hotel name.

SERVICE. The service was nothing remarkable, but what I did like was that the staff responds very promptly to text inquiries. I sent them a message a night before and the day during our trip. They replied in seconds to confirm the availability and pricing of the rooms! Checking in and checking out were a breeze. Room service is available, but you can also check out the restaurant in the ground floor for more selections.

ROOM. Our suite was spacious and came with a king bed, a single bed, a CRT television, a bachelor’s refrigerator, a water dispenser, hot and cold shower, and some personal care freebies (shampoo and body soap). The photo that you see on the website is exactly how the room looked. It didn’t have a “luxurious” feel as advertised though. It was rather drab, and the pink bed cover (which also served as the blanket) looked queer against the olive green curtains. These mattered little to us as we spent most of the time outside the hotel.

On our next visit to Dumaguete, we will try out other hotels. But if none are available and when our budget allows, we won’t mind staying at JF Obdulia’s Business Inn again.

We make it a point to visit Dumaguete as often as we can (minimum of 5x a year) because of our farm in Talay, Dumaguete. We looked at the all hotels in the area which we can make as our residence every time we go to Negros. Of all the hotels there, we picked Obdulias and we had been very loyal ever since.

From the standard room to the suite, we tried it all and we are very much happy with the hotel even until now. Location is central, its a walk to the church, walk to the local tiangge, walk to the blvd, walk to the big stores in Perdices Street. It is very easy to get on a tricycle if you would like to go around the city. And the price is unbeatable.

The rooms has tv, phone and high speed internet. The hotel will provide you a cable that will connect to you laptop so it is really very fast. We can still check emails and do work related activities at the end of the day even if we are there to farm. The rooms are spacious, there is sufficient water supply and aircon. Dumaguete is such a very hot place, aircon is a must. Rooms has windows so no musty smell. Ref is available on suites only but you can request it for standard room for an extra price if you need it.

If you are going to book here, request for the rooms that are not facing the main road. It can be noisy sometimes. No need to splurge on suites because their standard rooms are spacious for 2 persons already, just the ref is missing.

Obdulias dont have free breakfast. Not to worry because Highway 10 is on the ground floor which opens at 7am and they serve good food. And McDo is just a meters away. Favorite hang out of foreigners and local alike in the area.

The staff @ Obdulias are the same people we met since it opened, so we just send an sms to make a booking because we are so familiar with them already. I think it is also a good sign that the management is taking care of the staff.

If you are going to take the boat to Cebu or take the bus with Ceres, they have a print out of the trip schedule, everything convenient.

Im happy to say that ever since the hotel opened, we are loyal customers.

Stayed here for 2 days and booked the matrimonial room on the 3rd floor. From the outside, the hotel is a bit difficult to find because it's beside a gasoline station! When you get in, you'll see a slightly dark lobby and will be greeted by the hotel's friendly receptionist. The room that was assigned to me (room 306) was huge but the a/c tiny! It took really long to cool the entire area. I had two towels originally but the receptionist called to see if they could borrow the other one! What?! The cr was huge but very poorly decorated. It had a hot and cold shower and a plastic shower curtain to separate the toilet and the bath area! Also there was a funky smell that persisted the entire time! It became really pronounced everytime I'd go back to the hotel room after a few hours outside.

The good thing here is that the hotel is right in the middle of the city so it's near the church, the town plaza, the malls, and the market.

For its price (Php1099/night), I felt that I was better off adding a few hundred bucks to book somewhere else and if you are travelling to Dumaguete, you might want to do the same. There are better alternatives than this hotel (hotel Nicanor, Florentina, even Grand Pensionne Hotel) for about a few hundred extras so I suggest you do just that.

My wife and I stayed there over a month. We asked for and recieved a healthy discount. We enjoyed the central location to the park, restaurants, and ocean blvd a 2min stroll away.

At sunup I would walk the length of the blvd where many Filipinos take their morning excersize. Then I would have coffee at McDonalds with the dozens of foreigners living in the area, where I would receive plenty of good advice. Then back to the hotel where I could ask the helpful staff any question regarding getting things done here. They would always take the time explaining, offering suggestions, or recommending places to visit and how to get there.

An ATM was around the corner, the fruit market was across the side street, and I could run out for pastries and be back all in 5 minutes. The restaurant would bring breakfast or pizza up to our rooms whenever we wanted. Chilled filtered water was on each floor, and if you press the red button you could have hot coffee, soup, or outmeal. The EZ rides (a small jeepney-like truck with open air bench seating) would leave every 15 minutes from just outside the door to drive to the beach resorts south of the city in Dauin. An aircon van was available for airport shuttle or day tours, but we always took the numerous trikes.

Regarding the physical location, my wife is handicapped in a wheelchair, and we were happy to find ramps from the street, an elevator to our floor, and clean open marble floors to easily traverse the halls. Our rooms were super clean, the TV had premium movie channels, the aircon worked fine, the shower was warm, and the towels were fluffy. We slept well in a quiet room facing away from the street, enjoyed the wifi for our laptop (reception at the lounge area on each floor if you could not use the cable-wire available), and the staff sent us anything we requested to make our stay more comfortable.

Lastly, the owner, Mam. Flo, is a busy business woman/lawyer and has an office on the 2nd floor. She treated her different locacation staffs to a huge 2 day Christmas buffett, hams, gifts, and even asked us to join them and judge their talent show. I say this because we were very impressed that she cared enough to appreciate her employees, and foster a solid faith-based attitude of caring amongst all those who worked for her different businesses. It truly showed in the quality of care we received.

We came here after staying one night at “Harold’s Mansion”. Harold’s is probably a great place for the single backpacker but just wasn’t our cup of tea (we have a baby). Obduliah’s definitely ranks as our favourite hotel in Dumaguete. Here’s what you should know:
- Very easy check-in and helpful staff.
- Rooms are very comfortable, clean, and stylish (not tacky).
- Cheap as Hades. You cannot beat that price for the quality stay.
- Filtered water available on every floor to refill your bottles. Saves you money and hassle.
- Amazing, central location. Right next to the main park, belltower, cathedral, boulevard, jeepney station to Dauin. Five minutes from Robinson’s Mall which has some amazing desserts.
- Great place to use as a base to "explore the region". We stayed here and made day trips to places like Balanan Lake (definitely a must-see!)
- Food at the restaurant isn’t that great (for Western taste-buds) but there’s a McDonald’s right down the street if you want Western food so that really wasn’t an issue.

If you are traveling with a partner or family and comfort and easy-access to nearby attractions is what you want, then Obduliah’s is a great place to stay. If you do stay, just remember to tip hotel staff (bellman, restaurant, front desk) really well. The room rate is so low because (as in all hotels everywhere in the world) the average staff get paid almost nothing. Show your gratitude to the hotel staff who actually do the hard work in making your stay amazing. If you travel here from a Western country, then you definitely have the money to tip them generously. It’ll actually make you enjoy your stay even more!

Our 3 nite stay here was chosen for location and it fit our budget. Both were proven correct. Helpful staff wherever we turned. Lat (Lot?) at the front desk is especially knowledgable whether one wants to have some laundry done (reasonable) or where to catch a jeepney for ride into mtns to hike to Pulang Tubig Falls (several of them in the area). Quiet and Fairly new, so showers showered and AC kept the room comfortable. Bed comfy and clean room was large enough for our needs. The restaurant associated w/hotel, was located on 2nd floor and empty most of the time. Don't know why, as food and service was more than adequate. Obdulia's is w/in walking distance of city center and Silliman Univ. is just a 10 min. walk down the main avenue, maybe six blocks, but wasn't counting. One block closer is Panda Ice Cream Parlor - locally made - treat yourself and stop in. They even have ice water available for customers, libre. No doubt that we will book here next time when in the city of gentle people.

My pleasure to stay at this downtown hotel in the center of Dumaguete. Large room.comfortable bed, cable TV,direct computer connection(not WiFi),and good security. The only real drawnback was the second floor resturant. Unorganized & just plain unwelcoming.

I have stayed here over the past few years and the quality has been going down. This would be a last resort hotel for me from now on. It needs upgrades. Many foreigners stay here. Its may be ok for 1 or 2 nights, but there are newer places that have cleaner and better accommodations. Dumaguete is a beautiful place to visit. Plan ahead and make reservations elsewhere.
