They also didn't have the typical items of a hotel - shower cap, newspaper, shaver, extra toilet paper rolls, and a hair dryer.
Next, there is still no wifi and it's been there for 3 years. There is also no connection of the phone so we're unable to call reception.
The beds itself still have plastic which is very annoying when we sleep.
Breakfast was also a let down, no variety in choices and there should be a breakfast buffet because most hotels have those.
The floor of the bedrooms are terribly dirty and is very dusty.
Overall, this hotel is horrible and
not a good place to stay.
THIS HOTEL IS NOT RECOMMENDED
But before we check in.. A month ago and less than a month and a week before and a day before we discussed about our requirements and keep on updating them for our requirements.
Our requirements were:
We do need to have hussle free check in for our VIP Guest who'll check-in in Executive Suite Room. Please prioritized them first.
We'll be having our breakfast 0500H!
We'll be having our Lunch at 1100H!
We need FOC room for our Drivers and Tour Guides.
as discussed, Ms Tess from front Desk confirmed to us that they can add additional bed for Executive Suite but we need to check room first because she said it's a big room and no need to add extra bed because there's already a sofa bed. She said if they're not satisfied then they can add additional Bed. But what happened when we arrive at the hotel it's totally a HUSSLE MESS! Our request to give priority to our VIP guest was given priority last. Our guest told us that they need extra bed for the executive suite. So we asked for the extra bed. But when we request for the extra bed they told us that they do not allow extra bed on that room. And another answer from them, "we do not have extra bed on this hotel" "Bago pa lang po kami" Everything discussed before our check-in was denied when we arrive. We have 19 rooms and you know what? Our guest who must had given priority was the 2nd to the last checked-in. Extra Bed was not given, we avail another room.
We were the last one who checked-in. And Another Hussle Mess Occurs! They can't not give to us our FOC room. Because we're 5 and Superior Room can only accommodate 4 persons. We must book another room and need to divide the group into two. of course we not agreed to them. So we asked for the Superior Room Plus. As per Ms Tess again she said it can accommodate 5 persons. So we request that superior Room Plus. She said she'll just asked for the approval.
And then they awarded to us. But then again! Another Hussle MESS occur! The room for 5 can only accommodate 4. There are only 2 double beds No extra Mattress, No Extra Bed!. The 5th guest should sleep on the flooring. So what we did was the 3 of us shared in 1 double bed.
So what about the rooms for our drivers? The 2nd room (FOC) was not awarded so our drivers need to sleep at the Bus.
After all the room was awarded I asked for the Statement of Account so that I can settle the payment. But Ms Tess told us that it will be process by the accounting tomorrow.
2nd day at the hotel:
Our requested breakfast for 0500H was served late. And Mis-advice our guest.
Front Desk advices some of our guest that breakfast will be served 0700H.
We have tour at Pagudpud so we need to take our breakfast as early as 0515AM so that we can start our tour around 0600H. But because of the hussle again we started our tour late.
And after the tour and we get back in the hotel. I asked again for the SOA but ms Tess told me that "wala na po si Sir Haj, siya po kasi nakakaalam niyan. Bukas nalang po ng umaga"
3rd Day!
Early morning 0800H I went to the front desk and met there Sir Haj. I told him that I'll settle the payment right away so that there'll be no hussle when we check out. Sir Haj told me to wait for the SOA or he'll call me on our room phone once it is done.
I also remind Sir Haj to prepare our lunch 1100H because we need to check out 1200H.
But what happened to our Lunch?? Instead of 1100H it was late again. It was served 1200H. We're 1hour late on our schedule again.
1200H - 1230H
Here's the Worst again! Worst Hussle Mess!
The SOA finally done but when it was presented to me it was overcharged by almost 20,000.00. They said their basis was the booking form only. They charged the children. They count children as adult. As discussed 12years old below are free of charge. But then they charged it. So I told them that I'll not settle that account. They must recompute and recount the number of guest. We're late on schedule so I decided to stay at the hotel and let the group go and continue the tour going back to home.
And then I'd waited until 1500H for the SOA.
As per checking their SOA they still overcharge us. So I corrected their error.
It was very dis-appointing! They gave us FOC but as per their accounting manager/supervisor. The room was the only free but the guest were not! HAHA! Where's the (FOC) free of charge there if you're charging each of us! And then explain to them.
I was 3hours behind to the group and couldn't catch them up.
NO FOC FOR TOUR GUIDEs, TOUR OPERATOR, DRIVERs on Buffet Lunch! The only restaurant who didn't give us FOC on Meals.
All Late! Even Room Service!
Late Breakfast, Late Lunch, Late Statement of Account!
I'll NEVER BRING GROUP INTO THIS HOTEL ANYMORE!
Just keep your eyes open when thinking about staying here. It is on the road from Laoag to Vigan so is in a fairly good location, this and the facilities are about the only good thing that can be said for the hotel.
-free breakfast buffet that included eggs, rice and sliced jumbo hotdogs. Unlimited coffee. But there's always not enough chicken adobo or bangus for all guests. Some guests complained. Of course, we're hungry!
-Staff is very courteous and gentle. That is always what I've been observing every time I checked in a hotel.
-Parking is at the basement, which smells bad.
-My nephew and nieces enjoyed the pool.
-There's hot water in the shower.
1) Room key card not working, only worked once. The solution is to go back down on their slow-speed elevators and the receptionist for a new card key which does not work. This happened so many times & their remedy was to give me their master card key which could open any other room in the hotel. We realized that it was so because we accidentally switched cards (our family had 4 rooms booked) and the card key worked on all four rooms.
2) There were ting red ants in the room!! Imagine our dismay when the ants startes munching on our sealed (ziplock) crackers. Their solution? Housekeeping brought a Baygon insect spray and said they'd spray the room. Really? I said nevermind and instead i poured alcohol on the ants and cleaned the mess myself. Other than that, on the lighter side, the restroom was clean and however the beds were so-so.
3) Breakfast? What breakfast? On our first day, they ran out of food, causing the queue to pile up until it reached the lobby. They serve the breakfast themselves although setup was buffet. What's the point? The most efficient way is to just have a plated meal than let people line up for food portions they will control anyway. On our 2nd day, seems they have learned their lesson. There was food, enough actually, but prepare to eat cold breakfast because their buffet dish holders did not have any warmers.
4) Checking in - this was done in a few minutes but there was one concern- the amount quoted for our stay was 30% more than what they were charging us upon check-in. We had to reason out with them since it wasn't us who gave the erroneous quote. The receptionist explained the rates as if we were grade school students. Are you kidding me?! I was getting impatient myself until my mother intervened and talked to the reservations agent.
5) Poor service in the restaurant. I dont even want to begin explaining this. Please eat elsewhere.
This hotel has a nice lobby and would be nice facilities given its location. However, much attention must be brought to staff training and customer service. Some housekeeping staff were quite helpful, but not all of them. Do they want repeat customers? Or not? There are certainly other options to choose from in Laoag. We are seasoned travellers and even the smallest boutique hotels in other parts of the country provide better service. If you're going to stay in this hotel, be sure that you keep your expectations down to the minimum.
The room and water closet are clean. The beds are heavenly. The problems i had were that the aircon was not cool enough and the water heater was not working. Their restaurant was close at 7pm and not all the food on the menu are available and their prices are not cheap. I recommend that you eat somewhere in Laoag where the taste and price are totally ok.
The rooms are spacious with 2 double beds. No WiFi inside the room but is available in the hotel lobby which is according to my daughter, is unbearably slow. Cable TV has good signal and channels. The room also has a refrigerator, electric kettle, and an ample size cabinet. It would be nice if there was a vault inside.
There are outdoor pools for kids and adults but the water was quite turbid and I have a feeling that it was not being religiously maintained every day.
The room was at the very end of the hotel property. The window is facing the north side which has the view of the rice field, cockfighting farm, and a bus depot. During our first night, I requested that our beddings be changed because we experienced itchiness and suspected that dust mites may have been present in the sheets.
Our bookings include breakfast. The first day, we were served a la carte and the rest of our stays were all buffet. The food wasn't really that good. Choices were very limited and it was a managed buffet.
Overall, the stay was fairly good but I think it was overpriced. If it was not for the peak season we could have stayed in a far better hotel in Laoag with about the same price.
I did not take any pictures of the hotel as we were always out most of the time.
Room:
+ As stated, we booked a twin room. Each twin bed is good for two people; 2 adults can share one bed with just enough space between them, or can accommodate 2 children comfortably. The bed was firm and linen was fresh and crisp. My Dad took the extra bed that was laid out on the floor while my Mom and I took the beds. Each of us were provided with the following: a bottle of water, coffee, cups, and towels. The room has a television, a water kettle, and a cabinet. We were given a room on the second floor and it was pretty spacious. The bathroom had running hot water.
- Design wise, it was tad bit bland and kitsch. Again, we were given a room on the second floor, which shouldn't have mattered; however, upon arriving on the second floor, you would see unfinished rooms used as storage by the hotel. Very unbecoming of a hotel charging P4,000+ for a twin room per night. The airconditioning in the room could have been better. Considering the size of the room, it took a long time for it to get cool. The view outside the window was a barren field--not that they have any control of it; however, the price does not translate to what you're getting our of it.
Breakfast Buffet:
- I don't have anything good to say about their "buffet" breakfast. It's not the type of buffet wherein people would proceed to a dining room and have a smorgasbord of breakfast offerings laid out. First of all, there was an obvious lack of a formal dining area that can accommodate all the guests partaking in the meal. Do not get me wrong, they do have a 'restaurant'/'dining area' but it was too small to be of any use for the breakfast service. We were made to fall in line in their big function room, a long one, so that the hotel staff can serve us our breakfast. I have been to several buffet-type dining, wherein waiters/servers put food on our plates; however, there was a much wider selection of food and they did not skimp (too much). Again, for the price that we paid, I would expect that we would get more than congee, scrambled eggs, longganisa, sliced hotdog in ketchup/tomato sauce, fried rice, and sliced fruit. There was such a long line that by the time the people at the back got to the buffet table, there were no congee, scrambled eggs, and fruit left. When asked when they would refill the congee, the scrambled eggs, and the fruit, the staff member said that he does not know if the kitchen would even refill it at all!
First of all, you guarantee your guests buffet breakfasts and you should already have a headcount as to how many will be partaking in the breakfast service. How can you allow the kitchen not to properly time when they cook and send out food to the table? How can you allow your staff be ignorant of the availability of food? Also, they only give one longganisa per person. My parents and I had to ask them to put more, considering that they weren't sure if the congee and scrambled eggs were going to be refilled. Funny thing is, when we were about to leave the buffet table, I noticed that the kitchen staff finally refilled the congee; which was on the other end of the table. So what we basically had on our plates when we sat down were two longganisas, the sautéed hotdog (in ketchup/tomato sauce), and fried rice. My Mom and I had to go back to get congee and we had to wait a bit more for the scrambled eggs to arrive. The staff members were unapologetic and when I asked for a particular person's name, none of them were willing to give it. I had to force it out of them. After all the fiasco at the buffet line alone, I was still actually willing to let it all go. We were still able to get most of what was offered anyway. What pushed me over the edge was finding HAIR in my fried rice--and get this, I was almost done with my food. I called the attention of a waitress; who, like the rest of the staff, was lackadaisical and unapologetic. I asked for a manager but no one came; instead, what (magically) came was a plate of sliced oranges. I thought there was no fruit left? Obviously, this was meant to appease us. The serving staff (during breakfast) were unprofessional and lacked enthusiasm for their work; it was obvious because it showed on their faces.
STAFF:
+ I had the pleasure of speaking with, if my memory serves me correct, Matt the night before our check-in date. He was very helpful and he penned in our reservation for the room. He even agreed to call me to double check if we were still pushing through with our reservation. He was very professional over the phone and in person. When we arrived, Matt was not there to help us out; however, a very nice young lady took over. Her name escapes my mind but she was definitely very helpful. I was already getting ready to sleep when I saw missed calls and messages on my phone. I checked and saw that the messages (and calls) were from Matt, who was checking in to see if we were still going to push through with our reservation. I guess it was just lack of communication between the day and night staff but it felt nice knowing that he cared enough for their guests to check again, even if it was late and way past the check-in time. After the breakfast buffet fiasco, I was lucky to find Matt still on-staff. I relayed all of my concerns to him. Matt and the other staff members at the front desk were all-ears and were understanding of my concern. I also showed Matt a picture of the hair that I found in my food. Matt gave me a complaint for to fill up and promised that he raise all my concerns.
- It was through Matt that I learned that one of the "serving staff" at the breakfast buffet table was actually the hotel's "finance manager". I am not aware of their job descriptions but this "finance manager" should have had the decency to alteast approach me and speak to me when I originally asked for one. I needed to show a manager that there was hair in my food; however, he did not even have the courage to go up to me and own up to it. Funnily enough, he was also the person who refrained from giving the name of another staff member when I asked for it. I was not going to stalk that person. I was going to give the name to a supervisor so that this hotel staff member can be coached properly and accordingly. I did not see any reason why a "finance manager" would refrain from doing any damage control simply because of a job description. There obviously seems to be a lack of staff since a finance manager is serving food at the buffet line; so why not do damage control?
Overall, the bad things overwhelmed the good things that I noticed. I still think that they should lower down their prices considering their location and the type of rooms they offer. I've had the opportunity to stay in some hotel rooms here in Manila that are priced more or less the same but offered better views and aesthetics. Also, the breakfast buffet needs to be amped up. No, I do not expect them to have croissants, an omelette station, and a choice between brown or white rice. No. If they insist on a Filipino breakfast, then provide more than longganisa and sautéed hotdogs in tomato sauce/ketchup. I can do a better job at making the latter than their kitchen did. And you staff needs customer relations training, all across the board. A smile can brighten someone's day and a kind word can abate someone's anger.
Note: We ended up leaving a pillow behind. We called the day after our check out date and found out that they were able to find it. The person we spoke with guaranteed that it will be at the front desk and will be taken care of. That pillow was a gift and we'd definitely want to have it back if there was still a chance to do so. If ever we find ourselves going North and passing by this hotel again, we hope it would still be there.
Undoubtedly the worst hotel I have stayed in, in the Philippines, in Asia, and possibly anywhere - and this from an experienced world traveler as a backpacker, business traveler, and with a young family. The only reason it gets one star is because I can't give zero.
Email reservation was smooth, and the website showed a nice new hotel lobby, room and restaurant. On arrival the place seemed deserted. We checked in, and headed up to the room. The room itself was large but had 2 double (not queen) beds so we asked for an extra couple of mattresses for the kids. They brought these fairly quickly, but laid them on the floor. All mattresses had the plastic still on so that whenever you moved it made a crinkly noise.
Then the fun started. We went downstairs around midday for lunch. When we asked at reception they said the restaurant was open. The restaurant looked deserted, but the tables were all laid. We hung around for a bit, called out, and eventually gave up and went back to reception where we were told the staff were on their lunch break! Perhaps lunch time is not the most ideal time for the restaurant to shut if it is supposed to be serving customers!
After finding food at a nearby mall, and stocking up for dinner in case the same thing happened in the evening, we headed back mid afternoon, planning to use he pool. My husband called down to ask if they had towels down there or if we should bring ones from the room. They said they would supply towels. We changed and got down to the pool to be told it was closed for cleaning. So apparently they had waited until guests wanted to use it to begin his process as there had been nobody doing anything earlier in the day. The cleaning was supposed to last 2 hrs, by which time it would have been 5:30 and the moment and heat of the day gone.
This is when we decided to cut our losses. I called up a different hotel (Fort Ilocandia, where I had originally wanted to stay but had had trouble making a reservation) and asked if we could stay for 2 nights. Thankfully they had room for us. Pamulinawen offered to return 2000 php of the 4000 deposit we had paid. My husband argued for a full refund and they eventually agreed to refund 3600.
This could have ruined our vacation but Fort Ilocandia has been fantastic for our 2 night stay and definitely the better choice.
Steer clear of Pamulinawen - they have not trained their staff at all and customer service is shocking. You have been warned!
