Roosevelt Lodge Cabins, built in 1920 near Yellowstone’s Tower Falls area, is located near a campsite once used by President Theodore Roosevelt. The rustic cabins and family-style dining are a favorite of families and fisherman alike and the front porch rocking chairs give guests an opportunity to rock their stress to sleep and awaken their “Old West spirit.” A large corral operation offers horseback trail rides, stagecoach adventures and our popular Old West Dinner Cookout, where the steaks are tender, the wranglers are friendly, and the scenery is breathtaking.

We enjoyed staying in the cabins; however, we traveled in August and the previous renters built a fire in the stove - even though the fire was out the stove was still hot. Needless to say, our cabin was smokin' hot when we checked in. We opened the window and went out to explore Yellowstone. It had cooled by the time we returned. These cabins did not have running water so we had to venture out to the common building for showers and toilets. Totally fine with us, just like tent camping but much more expensive :-) Bathrooms were busy but showers were hot and only had to wait for a couple people before it was my turn. We felt that staying in the rustic cabins added to our Yellowstone experience and would recommend doing the same rather than staying outside the park. It was great to sleep with the windows open and to listen to the night sounds. Our only complaint was the service at the Lodge restaurant. We really wanted to eat here, so we waited around until there were several open tables and approached the hostess only to be told it would be a 30 - 45 minute wait. What?!? There were plenty of open tables, and we were not about to wait around an additional 30 - 45 minutes to eat there when we had plenty of food in our car and could explore Yellowstone at the same time. Very disappointed in the service at the restaurant, but not disappointed with the cabins nor the park itself. In fact, would highly recommend staying in the park if possible.

My expectations were a lot higher than Xanterra is willing to deliver. They must find the lowest bidder for feeding their guests, and then gouge the guests with ridiculous pricing. Not fresh, not flavorful, not at all what Teddy would have desired! DO NOT get the "bison tamales" - had no flavor and you could tell they were the lowest quality just by looking at them. The coup de gras, however, was the mouse that came in from a crack in the floor to feed on the droppings. If it's in the dining room - he & his pals must run havoc in the kitchen!

We loved our little cabin in Roosevelt. We stayed a few days in mid-August and it was perfect weather for hiking and adventures. Went on the Horseback ride/cookout and had a great time. My hubs couldn’t quite make it comfortably on the horse so they quickly added him on the wagon ride to the cookout and all went well. Our cabin was clean and well appointed. This was our first stop in Yellowstone and after a staying in other lodgings, this was our favorite. Many less tourists than Canyon and Old Faithful made it much more relaxing. The food was good in the restaurant and everyone was helpful. To quote John Muir..”To sit in solitude, to think in solitude with only the music of the stream and the cedar to break the flow of silence, there lies the value of wilderness.”

I have stayed at Roosevelt Lodge Cabins in other years, and I knew to expect an old fashioned, uninsulated cabin with a community bathroom to serve about twenty units. I also expected that women's bathroom to have toilet paper in the two stalls. When the toilet paper comes on those enormous roles, it must take several days before they need restocking. How often are they checked? Yikes. Also the young man at the front desk seemed bothered with actually having to interact with customers. Twice. Two different days. Additionally the mattress in room 17 was so worn out that we both rolled toward the middle.

This is the best place to stay in all of Yellowstone. Bed down in a Roughrider Cabin and you feel like it is 100 years ago. They are comfortable yet spartan, the shared bathhouses are convenient and clean. These cabins put you in the quiet northeast corner of Yellowstone. The Lamar River Valley is out your front door. If you want to see wildlife this the the place. Our last visit we saw bison, grizzly and black bears, pronghorns and wolves. There is great hiking nearby. The food is good in the lodge. Avoid the crowds and go back in time!
