The Topaz Hotel's prime location is a highlight for guests, offering easy access to local attractions and vibrant nightlife. However, the hotel experience is dampened by reports of outdated rooms that lack proper maintenance, often disturbed by noise from various sources. While some travelers commend the cleanliness of the rooms and pool area, others suggest a pressing need for renovations.
The service and amenities receive mixed reviews, with mentions of friendly staff alongside experiences of disorganization. Guests are divided on the value, with affordability being a plus for some but offset by comfort concerns and unexpected fees for others.

Detailed Reviews
I needed some winter sun and booked via the Olympic website - I'd never been to Malta before, so booking was really random guesswork! I liked the look of the Topaz's reception area and indoor pool - quite Art Deco. The hotel didn't disappoint - the reception and dining area are spacious, clean and welcoming. The indoor pool is small but clean and warm. The outdoor pool looked really good - but it was too cold for me to try it!
I travelled with a friend and we got a lovely room. It had two twin large singles - and also two single beds, so we got sofas, too! Plenty of wardrobe space and shelf space in the bathroom. Our room had a pool view (at the back) so it was really quiet - possibly a front room with street view would not have been so tranquil. We had a a balcony which was lovely for when the sun shone. We were on the fifth floor - which was also great, as it means no upstairs neighbours! The hotel seemed really busy but the corridor noise was really minimal, so it was easy to get a good night's sleep every night. There was a bath with a shower over it. I couldn't really manage to get the right temperature on the shower (it was either boiling or cold!), but that was probably my only negative about the room.
The first night there, we had the buffet evening meal, which was really good value. It was about 21/22 Euros for a self-service buffet (five courses, I think) and unlimited beer or wine. We had breakfast every morning - this was excellent, with a choice of hot or cold options, cereals, cakes, etc. The staff were really helpful and friendly and seemed to be constantly working hard to keep guests happy.
The same was true of the reception staff - there was always someone there to help out with information, and checking in and out was really speedy. Similarly, the cleaning staff were massively hard-working and friendly - they serviced our room every day, and the cleaners were around for most of the day, so I never felt pressured to get out of the room early for them to clean.
Overall, this hotel is great value for money. Due to the kindness and friendliness of staff, it had a very welcoming atmosphere. Buggiba itself isn't very exciting, and seems to be, currently, mostly under construction! However, it's a really good base for exploring the island, either by public transport (really good value at a flat 2 Euro fare) or with a chartered tourist trip.

I stayed at this property a week ago with my boyfriend. The staff is very kind and helpful, the cleanliness of the room is not the best.. the interiors are very old and there was always a bad smell in the hall. As far as eating is concerned, it is quite discreet, after all, coming from Italy, we are used to eating well🤣. The swimming pool is very beautiful and large, there is always a boy with the task of keeping it clean because there is a risk of slipping.

This is a cheap hotel and I stayed half board. At the time I stayed the hotel was full with a lot of long stay residents who come for the winter. It was the cheapest holiday as a solo traveller I have ever been on and you get what you pay for.The food is basic with a lot of pasta and bread.I personally don't like rice and am gluten intolerant so my diet was very limited and repeatative.I was informed that they could offer gluten free pasta but not bread.I was limited to protein and veg and the vegetables were the same all week except one night. The same at breakfast no veg except beans .Tinned tomatoes would be appreciated and on the last morning mushrooms appeared at the omelet station. My saviour was waiter Neboshja who every evening took a portion of the delicious soup they served and served it up reheated for my breakfast (needed my 5 a day). The elephant in the dining room are the desert spoons which are UK size serving spoons and like shovels.
The original room I was put in was unacceptable and despite attempts to improve it I eventually got moved from 3338 to a much superior and brighter room that the WiFi worked all the time. There are only 3 English TV channels and all are news channels. This needs tweaking for an improved English tourist experience.I personally found the rooms too hot and was provided with a fan as the AC is switched to warm.
The indoor pools more of a dip pool it take 8 breast strokes to get a cross it,but it is do able and I found times when it was empty which was nice and relaxing,so that too is a plus.
Staff were polite and helpful especially Rachel on reception although I wish I had known that all buses and most bus stops have free wifi to assist with the Tallinja app for the buses which staff downloaded for me.
There is a beauty salon hairdressers and barbers on site.I used the hairdresser's and she did a good job charging me 32 euro
The hotel is dated and tired but clean and well used.Over all this is not a top class hotel, you get what you pay for and it is Good value for money

I just left on a rheto trip to this hotel. NEVER AGAIN! If you like noise, not sleeping properly, and a very small room without even room for your suitcase, this hotel is for you!
If, on the contrary, you want to at least sleep at night and have a minimum of comfort, obviously choose another hotel.
Full of inconsistencies from the moment we arrived at the hotel. We are asked to sign a 6-page contract without having time to read it. This contract stipulates that everything will be guaranteed and paid for. We are told that we will not be able to use the two swimming pools, indoor and outdoor, or only from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. For the same price we chose a hotel without a swimming pool in this case.
I realize as soon as I return that I forgot to empty the first drawer in my room, so I send an email to reception and they tell me that they thought it was trash and that it was thrown away . “There’s nothing we can do for you.” Seriously ?
In short, avoid this hotel at all costs.

Having read some recent reviews we were slightly concerned about what we would find, however we needn’t have worried. We had a very enjoyable stay at the Topaz. We emailed ahead with a couple of requests and we’re replied to quickly. Both requests were fulfilled, which we were very pleased about.
This is by no means a five star luxury hotel and the prices reflect that but:
Pros:
All of the staff were lovely, helpful, friendly and hard working. Especially Lisa on Reception who made us fellow Liverpudlians feel very welcome.
The food was very tasty, especially the breakfasts.
The pool was lovely, huge and often very quiet with no problem at all getting sun loungers.
The indoor pool was generally empty to the point where the children referred to it as their private pool.
The air con in the rooms was extremely efficient which made a huge difference as the week we went was very hot.
The rooms are basic but very clean and comfortable and get cleaned every day.
The hotel is within easy walking distance of the sea front, restaurants and bus-stops.
The games room was an added bonus that entertained the children on a couple of evenings.
We were able to keep one room until the time the coach came to collect us on the last day, for a small charge. This was very welcome as we had a 7pm pick up.
Cons:
Some bathrooms are very small and cramped and if you’re a larger person I’d really advise discussing this with them before hand as the bathroom we had was a real squeeze.
The food could have done with a “children’s section” just some nuggets, chips, pizza etc for the fussier members of our party.
On Sunday’s the pool became very, very crowded with local people and during the busy period a couple of our children’s toys did go missing.
There was a big party of students in the hotel but they didn’t really cause any problems and since they were occupied during the day we thought that this contributed to the pool generally being quieter than you’d expect at this time of year.
Overall we had a lovely time there and feel that we’ve had good value for money.

Poor service, I found cockroaches in the room and breakfast and dinner were lacking in food. The waiters are very unpleasant and rude and above all not attentive. The hotel is equipped with a vending machine for very expensive drinks and snacks (half liter water €3.50). The cleanliness of the rooms leaves something to be desired, windows without mosquito nets, small bathrooms without bidets. The breakfast buffet was international, average. Well-stocked buffet dinner. The hotel is 45 minutes by bus from La Valletta and 15 minutes from Mdina and Rabat.

Good value for money. The structure is a bit dated but comfortable, the rooms are spacious and clean, towels are changed every day. Breakfast is decent, with cakes, biscuits, cereals and mini croissants; coffee a bit 'poor but then again we are not in Italy. The "salty" breakfast instead seems much richer and of quality. Surely in the vote affects the presence of the pool, beautiful both the large outside and the small inside. The location of the hotel also plays a positive role: in about two minutes on foot you can reach the Mwzieb bus stop, the nearest supermarket is a 1-minute walk away, while walking for 10 minutes you reach the Bugibba Square sea, with clubs, shops, restaurants and fast food to spend the evening. Friendly staff and helped us in Reservation a fullday cruise to Comino and Blue
Lagoon. Recommendation this hotel to those who don't have too much pretension and want to enjoy a traveling holiday on the island of Malta.

I was part of a large group and the hotel was selected by the group organisers. No issues checking in. The staff were helpful and polite. My and my husband’s room was at the back of the hotel on the 4th floor. It was a family room with 2 singles pushed together plus another 2 singles (for kids or adults).
The room got the early morning sun which was nice.
The room was clean and made up every day. My only complaint was that the shower needs an upgrade. It worked but didn’t have enough power.
There were lots of young people staying at the same time. For part of the week I was there they were water polo players from various countries. They were no bother and we’re pretty quiet at night.
Breakfast was buffet style with a good choice of cooked food and continental style plus fruit and yoghurt . All was fresh.
I didn’t use the pool.
The hotel was good value and I would recommend it for those on a budget or just looking for somewhere to sleep.

I regularly stay in 3 star hotels , but the Topaz was just an awful hotel , with a huge lifeless reception with a peculiar electric air freshener scent . There is a tiny bar incorporated into the pizzeria . The room was grubby and outdated with chips and cracks in the floor tiles and walls , dreary dark bedding and curtains, no complimentary tea, coffee or milk , but has a kettle and mugs .
Poor dull lighting , Flickering lights and non working lights.
No bedside sockets
Very lumpy smelly pillows.
Broken furniture
Poor shower head in the bathroom , it was black with dirt and needed a good clean( or just thrown away) beside the shower was frosted a window (why?) and you could see into the bathroom in the room next door.
The doors in the room were all louvred, even the bathroom, not really very private.
Tv had only 3 channels working, only one in English.
The breakfast was ok , but the toilets were a long walk from the restaurant and seemed to be the only toilets ( just 2 cubicles) on the whole of the ground floor, not very good for a hotel of this size.
Staff were dismissive and just didn’t seem to want to answer a question, let alone help.
I was glad to leave this place .

So I came to the topaz hotel in July on the 13th. When I got there my room wasn't ready but that wasn't a problem because I was able to go to the pool bar and have a drink in the sun ☀️
When the room was ready it was a good size I had a pool view, I didn't find any bugs or anything in the hotel, everything was working in good order unfortunately with the TV only having one English channel but it is what it is you go on holiday to enjoy yourself not to just sit there and watch TV.
The food breakfast and tea time I cannot fault it, the food was edible in the mornings and there was different types of food every night it wasn't just the same stuff.
The staff in the hotel made you feel welcome to be in that hotel there was one that thought they were better than you unfortunately I can't name names ( ten men ) you'll probably see for yourself which one I'm talking about a certain individual. ( Harmless though )
When we were there the students were there but they were very well managed they kept themselves to themselves they had their own little room to go to when you were eating for some people it would have spoiled their holiday but it didn't spoil mine because I wasn't really in the hotel that much.
Lisa and Rachel sisters English very kind ladies if you need anything they're the ones to talk to.
I was only there for a week, the question is would I stay there again? The answer to that is yes like I said people will moan about the hotel they will moan and say it's outdated or they will say too many students all they will just basically bicker and moan about the hotel. I have always said you get what you pay for it might be classed as a four star I would probably give it three and a half stars but like I said the staff are friendly the hotel is a good size the swimming pool outside is a good size and the food is edable they also had a barbecue night outside the pool bar which was something different.
So as I always say before you book anywhere you look and see what your booking you'll be able to see if there are students there you'll be able to see what the hotel is like honestly for an average person like me I enjoyed my stay at the hotel I had a good room but you've got to remember when you go on holiday you want to go sight seeing you don't want to stay in the hotel if you want the luxury go to a five star hotel if you just want a hotel that you sleep in and you are out and about every day come to this hotel instead of bickering about the hotel read up on it before you come.
So thank you to the staff of the topaz hotel and hopefully I'll see you next year.
