The local traditional characteristics reflected in the design of this small, but prestigious hotel, located at the waters edge overlooking the old fishing harbour and flanked to one side by an ancient chapel, only complement this quaint and idyllic setting. Yet just a minute walk away are a number of shops, restaurants, bars and other tourist activities all along the promenade. An early riser can watch the colourful fishing boats unload their catch from the comfort of one’s room. The hotel has breathtaking views of St. Paul’s Islands where St. Paul was shipwrecked. All rooms have a bathroom en suite, balcony, air-conditioning, direct dialing facilities, satellite Television, mini bar, hair dryer and room safety deposits. The Gillieru Harbour Hotel has ample public areas to guarantee the excellent and personalized service synonymous with the Cremona family which has run it’s catering services for over four generations. Early booking is recommended.

While the rooms are generally found to be clean and comfortable, opinions vary regarding their maintenance and modernity.

Some sites refer to this hotel as budget. I would say that it is a bit above that. It was for us just a place to stay and we did not spend time there in the same way that some people do, so cannot comment on it in depth.
We did not eat there other than for breakfast. Each mornng there were cereals available, cold meats, yoghurts, fruit bread/toast, pastries and the makings of a standard English breakfast. Tea and coffee came courtesy of a machine with lots of buttons. Perfectly adequate.
The rooms are functional and clean. The 2 essentials - a comfy bed and hot shower - were present, although the shower was not particularly powerful. One of the bedside reading lights was doing an impression of a strobe light and the air con did not want to switch off the first night. These were reported and fixed within 24 hours.
They have free water dispensers available to fill water bottles each day. I saw a bar and a cafe which seemed to be well used.
It's location is on the water front, a 10/15 minute walk from the square in the centre of town. There is a bus stop 2 minutes from the hotel that takes you along the front toward the centre.
The bus system is the best way to get around the island. We bought a 7 day pass and used it as much as we could, and definitely got our money's worth out of it as we did a lot of travelling about the island. It also covers the buses on Gozo too.
We also got a Heritage Malta pass as we were visiting a lot of sites of interest.
Whether these are value for money depends on the sort of holiday you are after.
The hotel was defintely good value for us and we had a great week. The staff were very helpful giving us all sorts of information which helped us get about.

This was my first ever time travelling solo so I booked this hotel in bed and breakfast basis with Jet2 as a package. When I arrived check in was easy and the lady on reception was really lovely, I think she has been mentioned a few times in previous reviews.
The Hotel Location is amazing, beautiful views of St Paul’s bay and the hotel is right on the harbour. Only a 10/15 minute walk to Buggiba square. The hotel is clean and authentic, it has a lovely feel and really captures what Malta is about.
The Room I stayed in room 401 which has a balcony which looks onto the street, whilst I would have loved a sea view this was still nice and was lovely to watch the world go by below. Tea, coffee & toiletries were provided along with towels and a beach towel. The bed was extremely comfy. Tv on the wall and mini fridge in the room also. The shower wasn’t the most powerful, but it was acceptable and I had no complaints. The only negative I had with the room was the air con, I had to go to reception 3 times as it was making an awful noise and creating a massive puddle on the floor every time I was in the room.
The Pool Amazing! Salt water pool, you just float! It’s so relaxing. Plenty of sunbeds and I loved that some were tucked away near the pool bar which overlooked the harbour. The gentleman at the pool bar was very friendly and polite, it was a nice touch everyday having just a simple hello how are you to show he had remembered me from the previous days.
The food I was only on a bed and breakfast stay so I didn’t eat much at the hotel. I wasn’t overly keen on the hot breakfast so tend to ate fruit most mornings. The hotel has its own restaurant, I didn’t visit as it is a seafood restaurant and I’m not a lover of seafood! However for those who are this restaurant is a must, I heard nothing but good things about it during my stay.
I would definitely stay at this hotel again. When in Malta, make sure to visit mdina and Valletta. Both beautiful cities with so many breathtaking views. Thank you Gillieru for having me, my main concern on this trip was safety due to being alone and I felt so at home and safe staying at this hotel. Thank you 🙂

Stayed for a week with friends at The Gillieru Harbour Hotel. What a lovely hotel this is, everyone of the staff was kind, polite and always helpful. We liked the coffee shop, which served delicious coffee and cakes! This hotel is in a great position, a short walk along the promenade to restaurants galore. We stayed bed and breakfast, which was plentiful and have no complaints, I loved sitting in the dining room eating my breakfast looking at the wonderful view of the harbour.
If you don’t drive, the Maltese bus service is really good and cheap and you can get everywhere on the island with ease. Parking places near the hotel was hard to find. There is a bus stop a minute walk away. There is a wealth of places to visit.
Bathrooms could do with a few extra hooks to hang the towels on and a place to put the toothbrushes, such a minor thing really.
I would definitely return and have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and do hope to return again soon. Lynda Spiteri

Dont be fooled by the four stars or the advertised photos, this hotel falls short on many aspects. Customer service is poor, the rooms are a disgrace , the dining is basic.
The dining room they show in advertising is not where guests dine as that is now a separate venue, you can dine there so long as pay in full less 10% but we tried it and had to send food back ! Clearly they have a cook in the kitchen who can adequatly cope with the simple food for the half board guest which despite having to sit outside of the resturant was quite good but if you are advertising yourself as a fine dining establishment inside you do need to employ a Chef to do the food.
On arrival we were given room 515 which we had seen on a you tube video from 2014 and must be one of the four worst rooms in the hotel (this despite having booked a supior room upgrade from holiday company) We refused to stay in it and we were moved to a restricted view room 212 which was better than nothing as hotel was apparently fully booked.
I say better than nothing so long as you dont mind black mould on the walls, ceiling and in the bathroom, the filthest air con unit i have ever seen, and like a collection of worn out old pine furniture from the 1980s, a wardrobe with four hangers, thread bare towels a smelly toilet, cracked floor and ceiling tiles and a balcony that when you sit out upon the child size chairs if we didnt choke on the smoke from the chain smokers on the adjacent balcony we had to look straight up the sun lotioned posteriors of those lazing on the sun beds opposite.
And so to breakfast, which was the same daily. A meger buffet offering and some rock hard crossionts (some with jam with the option of a fly or two on top) toast and jam, The full english option was served luke warm and slopped on your plate by a bored staff member.
Tea or coffee is available (without saucers for some reason) and if you would like a mug get down at 7am because i think they only have 10 or so in the hotel which is a shame because the drinks vending machines seem to be set to mug quanties so if you are only left with the sauceless cup option it dispenses half your drink over your hand and floor.
You are allowed to enter the holy sanctuary of the resturant in the morning but not the inner sanctum ,the place which on their advertising they show guests beining served from a sumptious breakfast buffet by smiling welcoming staff (and one of the many reasons i was misled into booking this hotel) No you get to sit in the annex which is ok i suppose, the tables are at least cleaner than outside and there are far less flys to bother you.
Needless to say i dont think we shall ever return, four nights was enough to experience everything this hotel has to offer.
I dont really understand many of the glowing reviews of this place like I also dont understand how somewhere like this can get 4 stars but i guess we are all different and some have lower standards and expectations than others.

We stayed at this hotel back in June 2017 and had an amazing time so we thought it was a good idea to stay here as we knew what we were getting, how wrong we were…
The room was shabby and dated, definitely not one of the rooms on the website, when we asked to be moved we were advised that it would be an additional £140 to have a “new” room.
The hot water was a joke, we had to run the shower for 20mins before it made an appearance and was a trickle, this was every time, there was so much water down the drain it felt wasteful, do they not realise water is a valuable commodity !!
The breakfast was terrible, the cold buffet was limited to sliced plastic cheese, reformed ham and bread rolls cut in half and the loosely termed “hot” buffet, was at best luke warm, fatty under cooked bacon, horrible little sausages and either hard or snotty fried eggs.. slapped on your plate.
The staff were ok, although unhelpful and unmotivated.
The best part about it was the little fisherman’s restaurant round the back the served superb food and very reasonably priced.
The hotel itself had a great clean pool, although the pool bar closed about 4pm and the pool closed at 6pm.
The location was good, it’s a short walk to Bugibba with plenty of bars and restaurants close by.
Would I stay here again ? No Would I recommend to family and friends ? No
It’s definitely not a 4star hotel, maybe Covid was it’s downfall but it really needs to up its game if it relies on returning custom.

The Possitives We first stayed at this hotel in 2019 which is situated overlooking St. Pauls Bay and found it to be a lovely small quiet, very clean hotel in a great location and said we would stay there again. After 2 years of no holidays and misery, suffered by everyone around the world, we were looking forward to our holiday and could not wait to get there. The hotel itself is very clean and the staff are very friendly, especially the day receptionist whose name I sadly never got but she does live on the island of Gozo. We found her to be very customer focused. The rooms are nice and clean but we found that they lack a bit or drawer space, at least our room did. The Negatives As I came to understand it, since the pandemic, the hotel has been sold twice and who ever owns it now has either no idea how to run a hotel or is just bad at running a business. As it stands n ow, the hotel does not own the restaurant or the swimming pool. The food in the restaurant is not bad, but there is not enough veriety and the food counter is not replenished quickly enough as ther are usuually just 2 members of staff on duty . I come to the bad part of our experiance at this hotel, The Pool. I am writing this review to help you understand what you will be facing if you decide to book this hotel, as we were never advised of the situation by Jet2 when we booked it. The Pool is open to the locals on a daily basis and the locals are given priority to sunbeds and over hotel paying residents. We were there for 2 weeks, and every day by the pool was herendous, very loud, and were lucky if we found any vacant sunbeds. We could not spend a day by the pool in peace. On one ocassion, we went up to the pool before going for breakfast and placed our towels on 2 sunbeds. When we went back after breakfast, I noticed that our towels had been moved to other sunbeds with no sun brolly. I immediatley removed our towels and placed them back on the 2 sunbeds we chose first time. There were 2 locals sat on the other side of us and she said that the pool attendant told them that the 2 sunbeds in question were reserved! I told her not to touch people's private belongings again and left it at that. There is a sign above the pool that says, No Diving and no Unruley behaviour. This obviously does not apply to The locals as they bring their children to the pool and they are let loose to do what they like. They dive bomb, play with balls and they never come out of the pool unless it's feeding time, 'Lunch'. On another ocassion, 3 local boys of the age between 11 and 12, were causing such a racket and one of them decided to drop his pants before bombing in the pool. We reported it to reception and sure enough they were taken out, but no apology to the residants from the management. Another time, 2 guest residents were asked to move from their sunbeds by a pool attendant as he said that those 2 sunbeds and the other 13, were reserved for the locals! Rightly so, they refused to move. This happened on a daily basis which made ours and the rest of the paying guest an unberable and unhappy stay at this hotel. If you are looking at this hotel, you have been put in the picture as what to expect from the pool. Sadly, We will not be returning anytime soon, as this hotel has lost it's charm for us.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your review and for bringing certain incidents during your stay to our attention. Please do note that both restaurant and Pool are both fully owned by the hotel. and any information you were given about the hotel owners are completely false. The owners and style of management is still the same as when you visited in 2019 and since the conception of the hotel back in 1994 when the hotel opened. Moreover, you failed to mention that both the Jet2 rep and I did speak to you personally regarding the incident with the 3 boys which dropped his pants, when asked the date and time to investigate this further and check CCTV you failed to remember the date and time which made it difficult to find the moment of the incident. Nontheless, I still apologised about this incident but as you mentioned, these were children and sometime the hotel does not have control over certain ways guests behave. Apart from that when I asked about the rest of the hotel and also on check out, you continued to tell us how nice the hotel is and apart from the incident with the boys, you have enjoyed your holiday and that you would return. We are sorry your experience did not match you expectations. We appreciate your feedback and the efforts, it will help us improve where we have lacked. Best Regards Matthew Spiteri Hotel Manager

This grand hotel is a standout in St Paul’s, where there seem to be almost as many businesses as people. Situated right in the beach by the eponymous harbour the location is virtually unmatched. Unfortunately that’s just about all it seems to have going for it. There’s a nice bar and restaurant with spacious terrace overlooking the sea, a courtyard cafe and a pleasant lobby, however, as far as pluses go that’s as good as it gets.
I was allocated a top floor room with sea view, which seemed like more than I could have asked for. Sadly the door to the terrace was broken (as was the curtain track) and the frontal view overlooked a service entrance. There were no duvets on the beds, only single sheets and blankets in the wardrobe, which for a ‘four star’ hotel is poor by anyone’s standards. Furniture was dilapidated, doors to wardrobes were broken as were chests/drawers. No room service available, no directory of facilities/amenities, not much of anything that one might reasonably expect from anything in this category.
Throughout my stay there was a problem with heating/plumbing in the room(s), despite the power being off the AC unit kept filling and draining intermittently. I complained to the duty staff and changed rooms to the one below, which turned out to be even worse. I slept on and off all night due to the noise and to make matters worse the shower was broken and flooded the room when I used it in the morning. Besides this, I was unable to regulate the water temperature, despite adjusting it to a cool setting the water was scalding hot.
When I complained again to duty staff in the morning I barely received an apology. I asked when the hotel manager would be in and nobody working there seemed to know. To say that I was unimpressed is frankly a gross understatement.
Breakfast was distinctly bland and again service was poor. There was decent choice though tables weren’t laid properly, toilet facilities were in a bad state of repair and general cleanliness was well below par. I could go on but I frankly can’t be bothered.
2 stars and to be quite honest that’s erring on the generous side.

Medium sized well kept classic style hotel with good sea views in a great location and very competitive room rates. The service and staff friendliness was excellent. There one or two problems that initially had to be dealt with. We booked an 18 sq metre sea view room but were allocated a very small sea view room on the fifth floor with undersized bedding sheets no duvets and a shower that ran either scalding hot or stone cold. All the sea view rooms on the fifth floor seem to be smaller than advertised but room 514 is also narrower as well which makes it very cramped. However, they did change the room to a standard spec one on the fourth floor - but we then found the a/c unit didn’t work. Again they did fix this problem as well. Despite all these initial difficulties we would stay there again.

The hotel was in a lovely location right by the harbour and the staff were pleasant and overall was clean and tidy. What no one had said was that the restaurant was no longer part of the hotel. I would advise to go bed and breakfast. The evening meal has one menu for the guests staying at the hotel it never changes it's the same night after night. Dont get me wrong the meals are well cooked but it's a fast food menu. If you like burgers and chips salads and pizzas on offer every night this menu is for you Then there is dessert they have a cafe that sells cakes during the day and the left over cakes are offered for your dessert. You go down for dinner on the evening and you are asked your room number which means you are not allowed to sit in the restaurant which is advertised you are shown an outside table. Would I recommend this hotel yes but do only bed and breakfast. If you pay for half board and remember I just said you have paid you can only sit outside and are offered the same menu all week.

Stayed at this lovely hotel from 29th March 2024 to 5th April and loved it. The lovely lady on reception was so welcoming when we arrived at around 10.30pm and the check in process was effortless even though I couldn’t find the jet2 hotel voucher, she sorted it out with me in no time at all. We had asked jet2 if we could change to sea view room before we travelled and were told there were none left but they would leave a message for the hotel of our request. The lady on reception told us she thought we would be happy with our room before we’d even thought to ask if we had a sea view and Wow 🤩 we certainly were. We had room 110. It had what appeared to be the biggest balcony in the hotel with a table and two chairs and two sun loungers and yes an amazing sea view. The room was clean and cleaned daily. The cleaning lady was also lovely. The breakfast had all we needed. Fry up, meats, cheeses, pastries and cereals. Not masses but plenty of choice in my opinion. The hotel staff were all friendly and happy to help in any way. The hotel itself is a quirky ship shape and positioned in the quiet area of St Paul’s bay with shops in walking distance. The promenade walk to Budgiba is not too long if you’re looking for a livelier evening but there are restaurants nearby if you fancy a quiet night. Buses go from outside or a short walk up the road to Valletta and Mellieha and Mdina. All worth visiting and only 45minutes away. Definitely recommend going with Hornblower cruises to Comino and taking up the extra 5 euro trip to Gozo as you get a few hours there and it takes you to the main part. It was really well run and the crew were brilliant. Definitely recommend this hotel and would happily return. Some areas did need updating but I don’t go away on holiday to pick holes in minor details. I rate this hotel full stars for, welcome we received, good food, clean room and a comfortable bed , great position to explore from and lovely friendly staff. Thank you 😊 Gillieru.
