With its dramatic setting overlooking Kailua Bay, the Royal Kona Resort is an oceanfront landmark in the heart of Kona town, conveniently located just steps from many fine restaurants, shops, historical sites, and activities. Completed in 2021, guests will enjoy the $15-million renovation to the resort’s 436 guestrooms and suites, and oceanfront pool deck.

Drawing inspiration from the tropical surroundings and sheer beauty of the islands the new Deluxe guestrooms and suites are designed with modern coastal inspired décor and finishes, rich teak furnishings, colorful natural fabrics, and beautiful marble wet bars outfitted with coffee makers and mini refrigerators.

The relaxing open-air lobby, surrounded by a tropical saltwater fishpond, leads out to an expansive newly refinished oceanfront sundeck impressively set directly above the ocean featuring luxurious teak loungers, beach umbrellas, and pool cabanas. The Resort also offers a private sandy beach cove and sheltered saltwater swimming lagoon perfect for beginner snorkeling.

Guests will find light meals and a variety of tropical beverages, including the Original Mai Tai, showcased in a world-class oceanside setting at the signature Don the Beachcomber Restaurant & Mai Tai Bar. With its open-air setting, right on the water’s edge, Don’s is the perfect spot to enjoy the sights and sounds of all the activity taking place on Kailua Bay, and it’s a great place to catch a breathtaking Kona sunset. Several nights a week, the Resort is home to Kona’s best oceanfront Luau, the "Voyagers of the Pacific Luau” presented by the award-winning Tihati productions.

Other resort amenities include four tennis courts available for day or evening play; rejuvenating massage and spa treatments; a fitness center; Hawaiian cultural activities; yoga classes; and a great sundry shop. Island specialists are available at the Resort’s Activities Desk to assist guests in booking tours and to recommend other island attractions, and specialists are also available on-property to assist couples with destination weddings and vow renewal ceremonies.

For a great location in the heart of Kailua-Kona, gracious Hawaiian hospitality and service, and the Big Island’s best value, choose the Royal Kona Resort.

We had a partial ocean view room. Room was spacious with a small refrigerator and coffee maker. Coffee provided was good and balcony was nice to sit while drinking our morning coffee and watching the ocean. However, room smelt a bit musty and a/c was set to 60 degrees. Our first day/arrival we had a difficult time finding parking since the luau guests were given priority over hotel guest parking. Hotel guests also had to pay an additional $25/day to park in the resort lot.

Hotel's Favorite
I loved the Royal Kona! They have big and spacious rooms, an amazing restaurant on the ocean, a great pool and lagoon area to swim in, and their staff was awesome! They were so friendly and helpful! I love that I could text them if I needed anything including checking out. They made everything so easy and enjoyable! I felt like I was part of the Royal Kona family! And the hotel is within walking distance of all the Kona shops and restaurants. I will definitely come back and stay again! I loved it!

We stayed for 5 nights in this nicely renovated resort on the coast. There are sufficiently big, well furnished rooms. Front desk friendly and helpful. The restaurant has good breakfast, reasonably priced, with wonderful oceanfront-seating. Pool area too small for the big resort, poolbeds often occupied (without anyone being near). WiFi working, albeit slow. Parking and Resortfee a bit expensive.

This is our 2nd time staying at Royal Kona Resort and we are so happy we did. Top highlights for us: -- Staff is wonderful, helpful and very accommodating. We checked in very early in the morning and the front desk found an available room that, for just a little upgrade bump, we could check into at that very moment. We were so happy to put our bags down, rest and start enjoying our vacation immediately. -- The oceanfront room is large, the bed is super comfortable and very quiet (just the sounds of the waves crashing at night which was soooooo relaxing!) -- Delicious drinks and food at Don's The Beachcomber. We went to several places in Kona that didn't match the quality and deliciousness of the food at Don's. -- Hanging poolside so relaxing and enjoyable. You can typically find an open set of chairs and those chairs are actually super comfortable (can't tell you how many times we've been excited to lounge by the pool and the chairs look nice but are god-awful). With a big beach umbrella, you can hang there all day (and we did...several days!). -- LOCATION! We didn't rent a car this time because we we wanted to actually relax and not fill up our entire vacation with "to-dos" (we have been to Big Island many times, we live on Oahu). This was our BEST decision because we could easily walk everywhere in Kona and pick up the free trolley whenever we wanted to go farther afield (and the trolley stop is right outside Royal Kona). Definitely will stay at Royal Kona again. :)

People in the hotel was very friendly and kind, but the beds of the hotel are small. My husband and I had our feet out of the bed. I also remember saw in the website for 2 queen beds but when I came to the front desk they told that only have king beds. I also signed for rewards to get free parking and the front desk said next time. I don’t think it will be next time

Book directly with the resort. Avoid booking through third parties as you will likely end up in a less than ideal room. Many people have the mistaken belief that when they are told that they will receive either a king size bed or two doubles that they are the ones that will decide which they will receive. In actuality the hotel decides based on availability. This leads to a lot of anger and a lot of confusion. If you want a king size bed with an ocean view then please book the corner king size ocean front room. That is the only way you will be guaranteed to get the room you want. That is what we did and we couldn’t have been happier. Our only complaint about the resort was the poor availability of parking especially during the luau’s (parking lot should be for hotel guests only!). A concern that we had was the lack of recycling containers for bottles etc.

The staff was incredible for our honeymoon. We were upgraded to an ocean view from our partial ocean view because we were honeymoon guests, and our view was amazing! The staff was friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The location was very central to Kona, and it was nice to be able to walk into town. We were close to excellent snorkeling, food, and coffee. 10/10 would visit again.

Staff was so welcoming and dedicated to our experience. The room was large and bed was very comfortable. The location was walking distance to the main tourist strip, restaurants, shopping, etc. Safeway, and Walmart is also walking distance although this walk is uphill and more for active people. The ABC stores and main Kona strip along Alii is easy walking from the hotel along the ocean sidewalk. No car was needed unless you want to go to the black and green sand beaches, Costco, and the National Park. Kona is not the location if you are looking for sand beaches to spend your days. But it is an amazing place to explore and relax. When booking remember Kona is the drier side and Hilo is the wetter side.

We enjoyed our stay at the Royal Kona. It provided us with a little reprieve before moving to the next island. It was small enough that our children could easily know their surroundings and there were plenty of restaurants and shopping a block away. The snorkeling area was nice and we saw a sea turtle there. There is no beach access at this resort. We also booked the Luau. It was a great show and good food! You have to get there at least 30 before the show time if you want better seats. We did not do that and though all seats can see the show, we would have come earlier if we knew!

Resort was excellent. Good area for everything to do in Kona. Had a great view from the room, the cleanliness and hospitality was amazing. Our tour shuttles knew the area for accessibility. The luau was outstanding. My girls couldn't get enough of the entertainment. Would totally come back.
