OK, I'm a pretty experienced traveler. Further, my tastes fall a little onto the luxury side and on top of that, I'm discerning. (My wife calls it 'picky' and 'critical.')

So here's what I say to any traveler headed to New York. I love the thought of a Waldorf or a Plaza or even an Affinia. I do. I really do. But if you want to come to New York, stay in an extraordinarily clean room and be cared for by a smiling, caring staff AND pocket the additional $200 per night for other things, stay here.

I won't wax poetic. I'm too tired. Let's just say this: every hotel housekeeping and customer relations staff should be required to visit this property annually and observe. That's all. Just come see how it is really done. I'm not just talking about clean because the carpets were vacuumed last week, I'm talking about every grout line, every caulk line and every linen. Clean, clean, clean. Friendly, friendly, friendly. This place is a hidden gem, folks. Take note.

So no hotel is perfect you say? Right. I went for coffee in the breakfast room at 10:15am. They were out.

See, told you I was critical.

PS. I used part of my $200 per night savings and went down the street to Dunkin Donuts. I even got a donut. Just don't tell my wife.

Hi

This review is for Super 8 Brooklyn, NY. I and my wife stayed between April 4-6 2012 and was very happy with our stay. The 3 main criteria why I liked the hotel is it was neat and clean, conveniently located near the subway, safe locality, great value for money last but not the least a very nice and helpful front desk lady Mohita.

If I have a complain it is only about the breakfast, there was no variation in the 3 days I stayed.

Any given night, the hotel charges NYC to shelter homeless who hang out at the lobby, coffee area, door and corner. This is not a hotel anymore. Unless you are homeless and NYC is paying for your room, stay elsewhere.

We were scammed when we booked a stay at this place. It is not a hotel, it is a scam. At first we thought it was legitimate, but it is not and it is not safe. We came from England for our first trip to New York. It was a scary and disheartening experience to stay at this location. Please be careful.

We were guests, or more accurately, victims of this motel for one night. Badly managed, poor security. We (the motel guests) had to call NYPD at 4:00 a.m. to break up a loud, prolonged melee in the lobby. This was a truly frightening situation that went on for over a half hour.It appears that no hotel personnel intervened. This was AFTER someone tried to break into our room earlier in the night. At that time, the desk clerk stated that it was "security",and offered no explanation as to why a security person would force open a guest room unannounced in the middle of the night. There is no apparent security, and no manager was on the premises at 8:00 a.m. the next morning when we wanted an explanation. No one knew when or if a manager would appear, even though the desk clerk stated that "she should be here by now." We have stayed in Manhattan and Brooklyn for years and have never had an experience remotely similar to this one. We will not stay here again, or at any other Super 8 establishment.

Thank you for your comments about the Super 8 Brooklyn Hotel. In this instance, you specifically requested a room on our first floor, adjacent to our front desk. While this room is very convenient in terms of minimal walking distance from the front door, it is also close to the front desk. During the isolated incident that you bring up, front desk and security acted correctly by preventing an unruly guest from entering the hotel. It is our job to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for all our guests and they were ensuring this. In fact, the experience that you had at our hotel was very atypical for our quaint hotel. A quick view of our other reviews would show that travelers commend us on our superior customer service, cleanliness and above all, quietness of our rooms and area. Super 8 Brooklyn Hotel has received the 2012 and 2013 Tripadvisor Certificates of Excellence for superior customer care and service and hope that we can show you this on another upcoming stay to Brooklyn, NY.

I know it's the luck of the draw sometimes, but I drew badly. I am writing to you from the worst room in the hotel. It's in the basement, with a partial view of the parking lot. It's next to the laundry room. The walls are paper thin. I like the security guard, but he put in a load of laundry at 11:30pm, and I had to ask them to stop it. He checks the room sometimes through the night (is it where he takes his breaks?) and I can hear him coming in and out of the room. The first day here, the door to my room wouldn't close properly. If you pushed it hard enough, it opened. I had to leave my room like that when I left for my day's meeting. Yes, a thief would have to make it past reception and the security, but who wants a room that can be broken into so easily? I asked to be moved and have been told there is no other room available - even though my company made a block booking for a number of rooms. Yes, they fixed the door after a day... and I really like the young woman who works the day shift (the guy in the evening just doesn't care). But this place really sucks. I'm going to write to the manager to see if we can get a partial refund. They should simply not put anyone in this room.

While I wish to offer my deepest apologies for the inconveniences that you have encoutered, mainetance issues do arise in a hotel from time to time. I want to thank you for bringing to our attention the issue with the lock. I am also glad that this was resolved immediately. As you are still checked into the hotel, I recommend you stop by the front desk so we can switch your room to one that is more of your liking. We will be holding you a room if you decide to take it. Again, I apologize for your inconveniences and please let us make it up to you on a future stay.

I booked this hotel in Brooklyn online (for Jan 28) around 5:45pm today, Jan 5, because of good reviews and the promise of free parking if booked directly with the hotel. About 2 1/2 hours later I tried to cancel my reservation because our restaurant plans did not pan out. I was told that it was not refundable because of the low rate I got ($101+). I called the customer care line to request a cancellation but they couldn't help either. They suggested that I call the property directly which I did but my request was rejected. So, I lost $101 and will never stay in Super 8 again. Most hotels require from a week to 24-hour cancellation. This policy is quite unreasonable and will drive away business eventually.

At the Super 8 Brooklyn Hotel, we have chosen to put as many choices in the guest's hands as possible. That is why there are many different reservation options available via super8bk.com. For example, if you want to book a fully refundable reservation with a standard 24 hr cancellation deadline because you do not have concrete plans, no problem. We have an option for you. If you want a deeper discount, in many cases 15% off our already low rates, with the knowledge that it will be non-refundable, no problem. We have an option for you too. Our hotel prides itself on our customer service. Putting the power in the hands of our customers is a big part of that! In this instance, you booked a non-refundable reservation. As such, we weren't able to offer you a refund. We do apologize for any inconveniences this may cause and hope that you choose Super 8 Brooklyn Hotel for your future travels to Brooklyn, NY! We offer our guests the most value of any hotel in our area. These include free parking, free breakfast and free wifi throughout the hotel. So make sure you book via super8bk.com to receive all these bonuses for FREE!

I booked this hotel because of its good reviews on Trip Advisor but unfortunately did not have the same positive experience as most everyone else. While the hotel is not really that far from the heart of Park Slope, it's actually on the edge of Park Slope and the cameras outside and inside the hotel--while a good idea--made me a bit concerned. Having said that, I walked around during the day and got dropped off in front of the hotel after dark and generally felt at ease. My biggest problem was that my room was very dirty upon check-in (the worst being hair in the sink, tub and toilet and the sheets were stained). The manager apologized and had it re-cleaned but when I returned that night, there was still hair in the sink. Once that happened it was hard to get over a general uncomfortable feeling although everything was generally OK for the remaining two nights of my stay. The manager offered me a special rate on a future stay but I thought some reduction of the rate for the first night.(the "dirty" night) of my three night stay was more appropriate, which the hotel refused to do. I may have just had the one bad experience but I would not be able to stay here again.

First of all, terrible neighborhood with plywood up to whole areas. Second, bed was miserably hard. Third, slipped and fell hitting head in shower, no shower/tub mat. But the worse is that around 4 AM woke to horrible scream, banging doors, someone running around in halls and swearing. Went to window, saw 2 cops cars and ambulance and more on way.
Got dressed, went to front desk around corner, asked cop if we were safe and he ordered us back to our room, told us to lock door and stay in room. Which we did. He then said "this hotel is NOT a safe hotel"
He yelled at the front desk clerk and said "THIS is why we are here every weekend, you buzz in ANYONE without exception"
We packed and left at sunrise. The security Guard told us that someone was robbed at gunpoint and recommended us to leave which we were already doing.
The clerk refused to offer us a refund for the last night we stayed there, even though they failed to provide their customers with a safe environment. We were afraid for our lives. We stayed here for 3 nights, thinking we could park our vehicle there while we went on a cruise. So now we're out that money too and it costs us another $143 to park the vehicle. Also this is not a "cheap' hotel as it cost us $467 for 3 nights.
When I called Super 8, was told that 100% of their hotels are privately owned so they hold no responsibilities whatsoever! Well isn't that nice!!? So the owner refuses to return calls and I truly believe that they don't deserve that room charge for at least the last night. 4 AM wasn't in our plans.
I will never ever stay at another Super 8 again. Pay the extra money and stay in a reputable hotel. I know WE will.
I only WISH we had taken pics of their pitiful parking area. Everything from the back is boarded up and it's a terrible neighborhood. No restaurants nearby that we would recommend. I get sick just thinking about it. I was a bundle of nerves for days after this!

Dear Guest, We apologize for any inconveniences caused during your stay. The episodes that occurred during your stay are very atypical and management has taken steps towards ensuring that nothing of this nature happens again. Customer service is extremely important to us. A look at any of our other tripadvisor reviews show our hotel described as "felt safe walking at night", "quietest hotel i've ever stayed at", "hotel very clean", and "staff very friendly". Our hotel is very safe and has not had an incidents to date. The night that you were here, one of our guests called an ambulance from the room because he felt ill. In NYC, whenever anyone calls an ambulance, the NYPD and FDNY show up as well to do their due diligence. That is why you saw NYPD and Ambulance on the scene. They took the guest to the hospital and we were told that it was caused by food poisoning. Our hotel has been awarded "Top Value" by Tripadvisor and we are in the 90% of all Super 8 properties (out of 1613 hotels) as voted by our customers. We have also outperformed all economy and midscale hotels in Brooklyn (including Holiday Inn Express, Choice Hotels and Le Bleu Hotel) in customer service, staff friendliness, amenities, cleanliness and intent to return. Needless to say, episodes like this are out of the control of management. We sincerely apologize for any disturbances that resulted from your unfortunate night and hope to change your mind about our hotel in the near future.

you get the standard breakfast which includes cereals, toast, coffee and juices. Not hot items such as eggs, sausages, but good enough non the less. Space is limited and the breakfast area a bit on the small side, with say 4 or 5 tables and a counter with some chairs up against it.
