If you are not from the NYC area you may be a bit surprised about the size of the hotel room. Like most living areas in Brooklyn, space is at a premium. So in true Brooklyn style it was a small room. However, it fit everything you needed in an efficient manner. It was clean. They provided ear plugs as there was some construction nearby but we did not experience it. I would rate the beds as a B+. Front desk staff were friendly and helpful. For a short stay it is fine.

I would give this place four stars as it check off most boxes when going on vacation for a short time. I booked three days and the hotel was very convenient to food, shopping and subways to get into the city to explore! The room was small, clean and the HOUSEKEEPING staff are A+++, very respectful , fast to respond to requests and kind! Tip them, they deserve it.
The front desk allowed me to check in one hour early (thank you! ) and they were nice!
The hotel is in the middle of a “refreshing “ and there is shotty paint work in the rooms but the most important part was the cleanliness and comfort of the bed! There were times where there was a stench of smoke in my room (1904) from the adjoining room from time to time, but the air conditioning helped drown the smell. Oh and the other thing, the AC , only thing you can do is turn it on or off!

The hotel is under renovation, which is understandable and means somewhat lowered expectations for the physical building itself. However, this hotel still managed to disappoint in a way that I can only describe as impressive.

At check-in, I provided my Bonvoy number and asked about the possibility of a room upgrade since it’s part of my elite benefits. I was moved from a high-floor king room on the 21st floor to an ADA accessible king room on the 6th floor — according to reception, this is a bigger room and so constitutes an upgrade, plus the lower floors were “recently renovated” so would be better overall. Good looking out, right?

The joke was fully on me as I got out of the elevator. On the 6th floor, all the baseboards are missing in the hallways, revealing the most disturbingly consistent pattern of peeling paint I’ve ever seen in a hotel outside of the former Soviet Union.

The room itself wasn’t much better. I was greeted by harsh fluorescent lighting, loose floor laminate, a couch that has definitely seen better days (circa 2010), peeling paint on the floor of the shower, a partially missing soap dispenser, and a massive gap in the baseboard near the bathroom that has some unknown combination of dust, dirt, and cursed energy emanating from it.

I might check with the front desk again to see if I can move rooms but frankly, after being lied to about the state of renovations and being duped into the “room upgrade,” I feel like by asking I would just end up “upgraded” to a mop closet or a laundry room. Plus, it’s unclear if the receptionist will ever look up from his phone to acknowledge my existence.

It’s not all bad, though, so this place does warrant more than 1 star! The Jay St-Metrotech subway station is right around the corner so you can easily spend literally as much time as humanly possible away from the property. Downtown Brooklyn is also nice, if you need to escape the Aloft and go somewhere pleasant and clearly suitable for human occupancy there’s plenty of shops and restaurants in the area.

Where do I start... first, check in was at 3. We arrived at about 3:05 and they told us they didn't have a room. We had already paid. So they had us and some other people wait while they "looked for rooms" and then had them cleaned. After about 45 minutes of waiting, they said 10 more minutes. 15 minutes after that, I went up to them to say it had now been an hour. They asked "what's your name again?" and then gave me a room key and told me 805. I go up to 805 and the key doesn't open the door so I start trying other doors and the key opens 806. Then I have to go back down to make sure 806 is in fact my room. This whole time the three young Asian men working at the front desk were extremely standoffish, as if we were annoying them staying at their hotel. We had one small body wash for three people. The next day we went to ask for more body wash and had to wait while the front desk guy talked on his cell phone for a while. He asked when we needed it by and we said... like now? So he gave us another single small body wash. Turns out the "rooftop bar" of the hotel is not affiliated with the hotel in any way, so you have to pay a cover just to get in. Oh, and although there are signs even in the elevator that you should go to the 24th floor to get there, that is not the case. You have to go outside the hotel and a few doors down, which you wouldn't know, because signs tell you otherwise. I have tried to call the front desk 7 times and each time no one answers. This place seriously sucks.

The hotel logo cannot be seen from street level (because the sign is above the marquee over the front door), and this is only the beginning of a stay that was wholly unacceptable.

When they started the renovation is hard to tell, but they are so far from completing it that the hotel appears to be in complete disrepair. Holes in the walls, carpet, and light fixtures is just the start. Other lamps that do not work and poor lighting in the room just adds to the disappointment.

The in-room tv delivers a whopping 10 channels with many in non-English languages, and the only us news was Fox.

The staff was uninterested in providing a warm welcome, showing any level of interest or concern, and completely failed (twice!) to deliver upon a verbal request for bottled water made at what passes for the front desk.

In a great city like NY with so many fine examples of hospitality, you’ll be better-served staying elsewhere.

The Aloft is in a great location, but there is a Sheraton next door and a few other hotels to choose from locally. We thought the service was fine, the bed comfortable and the location great, but there were a few people staying in the room next door who were going in and out and talking all night. We could hear everything, and didn't get any sleep. We moved to another room the next day, but that day was shot. The carpets for some reason were stained in both room. Tip, keep the bathroom fan on all night to block noise from adjoining rooms and the street.

We were told after we arrived to the hotel that there was a renovation going on. We have not heard about it at the time of booking. There were different huge boxes and packages placed right in the lobby. There was only one receptionist at the desk. The lobby was dirty and totally run down, just as the elevators and the hallways. Most overhead lights were burned out, there were suspicious marks and spots on the walls and the carpeting. The room was bare, no rugs, not even an alarm clock, the shower had mold and " I do not want to know" what kind of stains. There was an air conditioner under the window, what was so noisy that we had to turn it for for the nights. We had to sign up for daily room cleaning, what was not done. We had no coffee or cups to the coffee machine in the room. The iron was missing. The receptionist was the most unhelpful, had we have any basic issues. The manager was conveniently unavailable .After we had complained they promised a 10% discount what was never given. Recommend to avoid this hotel as it is now.

I first have to say that I had no idea that the hotel was undergoing renovations and if had I known I would have not chosen to stay here. I have several issues, but I will only mention a few. First, there are ants and other insects in the room, there is an odd smell throughout the entire 21st floor, there aren’t even any ice machines available and I had to pay $3 for ice at the Brooklyn Deli! And, I also had no I idea I had to request housekeeping services! I am being charged way too much for minimal service…I never expected I had to bag my own trash and hand it over to a housekeeper!

I received a standard response :

From the hotel which stated I part the following standard First and foremost, I would like to sincerely apologize about the issues you encountered throughout your stay with us.
I do apologize about our hotel's appearance as we are trying our best to keep our hotels up-to-date for the very best future experiences.

A lot of BS with no offer of partial reimbursement or Bonvoy points.

Don’t stay here…beware!!!

I was booked for a stay in August (not sure why they accepted my reservation in the first place as it seems to have been a homeless shelter for a year now), but ~2 days beforehand, they moved my reservation to the Sheraton next door so it was too late to easily change anything. Sketchy people hanging around outside loitering and smoking cigarettes at all hours. There's no way I'd book this hotel again. Posting a review as warning to others!

They require a key card, however, the lounge they have upstairs is accessible by anyone. It's so busy that anyone can get on and off the elevators.
