I have been meaning to write a review for a while now and am finally taking the time to give Rittenhouse 1715 a well-deserved and thorough review.

THE WEBSITE

For anyone who had checked out their website before late April, they would have seen an old-school layout with photos of dated rooms. But as the weeks progressed, the website got sleeker and more sophisticated with its design and images. More and more updated photos of the rooms were added, and new descriptions of each room’s inspiration appeared.

I only wish the room description on the booking page matches what is inside each room. For example, not all rooms have a desk, but some rooms without a desk had “a working desk” in its description.

FIRST IMPRESSION

As if on cue, Doug (the manager) swung the front door open and greeted us with a big smile the moment my feet touched the ground. “What timing,” I thought. This probably doesn’t happen for everyone, so I was lucky that Doug happened to be inside the lobby right when we arrived. His exuberant welcome remains unmatched and set the tone for the rest of our stay at Rittenhouse 1715. When he happened to be in the lobby upon our return, he would greet us and welcome us back. I was impressed that he remembered our last name.

SERVICE

Even before stepping inside the hotel, a number of texts and emails had gone back and forth between me and the front desk staff—Shakirah, Madison, and Elijah. Ever patient and accommodating, they helped me decide on the rooms by sending me photos of those that have yet to be posted on their website-in-transition during the spring of 2022. They had also answered my numerous questions about the hotel.

Once we were there, they brought us whatever we requested—a cot, a fan (a very nice Dyson), more toiletries, an extra glass, etc. Everyone was pleasant to deal with.

THE HOTEL

Located on a quiet and short street in between the hustle and bustle of Rittenhouse Square, it provides an urban oasis where you do not have to dodge cars and pedestrians. It makes it less hectic to be picked up and dropped off by Uber or Lyft as well. Then when I had a car delivered by Turo to the hotel, I had ample time to talk to the car owner without feeling rushed to get out of the way.

What I love about the hotel is its romantic and timeless aesthetics. The beautiful and lush wallpaper and green benches in the lobby transport one to a bygone era. It creates an intimate space that reminds one of a drawing room or salon, but it’s neither of those, nor is it a typical lobby. One has to be inside the hotel to understand it. All I know is the lobby has a relaxing effect; it shuts out the rush of the day when you step inside it.

THE ROOMS

This is the reason why I picked this hotel. Each room is like a character in a book. Every room has its own personality. One might expect a cohesive theme, but that’s not the case. One room may feel more Asian modern while another room may be genteel and elegant. Some rooms are whimsical, and other rooms are bold and daring. It is a mix of periods, colors, style, and aesthetics. Depending on your taste, you can most likely find a room that speaks to you.

The beds were very comfortable . . . as good as a 5-star boutique hotel that I stayed at in Chicago. Rittenhouse 1715 spare no expenses when it comes to their Frette towels and bedding. When all mid-tier hotels give you the standard towels—not too thin like Holiday Inn but not thick either—this hotel gives you affordable luxury. The toiletries are also different than the usual offerings of big hotel brands, Aveda, Crabtree Evelyn, or Gilchrist & Soames. The toiletries may not be formulated by a bespoke perfumery in New York City, but it is nice enough: Molton Brown’s relaxing ylang-ylang.

I liked the Maude the best. You get the most for your money because that room is bigger than the usual one in its class, and it has an entry way between the bathroom and the bedroom. Its marble desk is also large and one of a kind with shelves on the side.

The same applies to the Dandy in terms of space. The Dandy is reminiscent of 19th century French and beautifully furnished, but it felt a little more cramped with a cot in that room than it did in the Maude. Also, the Dandy is right above the bar, so unless you can put up with rock music until late at night, the Dandy is not the room for you. I found this out the hard way. Also, the desk chair has a wine stain on it. I hope the hotel has changed that seat since then.

If the Maude had the bigger bathroom of the Dandy with its spacious vanity, it would have been the perfect match. If you do not mind a smaller room, I would recommend the Liberty or the Aristocrat. Those two are tasteful and oozes with character. Another beautiful room is the Jane, but you have to really like emerald green and don’t mind going up some flights of stairs. This reminds me of something rather important. If you want to avoid stairs, read the room descriptions carefully to see if the room is accessible by elevator or not.

I wished I could have seen the Cassis because that room looks beautiful in dark purple and deep blue. It also has two armchairs and a desk, which is unusual for its class. All the rooms that are not a suite tend to be sparsely furnished. However, I heard that more furniture is on its way to the hotel. Still, some rooms like the Dumont is simply too small to hold much of anything beyond a king-sized bed, two night stands,
and a tea tray. If the size of the room matters to you, definitely email or call the hotel for more details.

All the suites are spacious and gorgeous, so if money is not an object, go for the suites. There are three of them, and their different prices go hand in hand with the size of the room. The Armand is the largest suite, but if walking up and down a spiral staircase between the bedroom and the living room makes you dizzy, then you will want one of the two other suites instead. The Rococo is the prettiest of them all, but if pink is not your favorite color, then choose something else.

BREAKFAST

It was very basic when we were there for the first four nights: store-bought mini croissants and muffins with bottled juice and coffee. However, upon our return from Gettysburg, they upgraded their breakfast to a fuller spread of summer berries, yogurt, granola, and more. I am not sure what breakfast is like now, but I hope they continue to offer more options for their breakfast.

OVERALL

This is not the hotel for everyone. If a mid-range hotel is what you are looking for, and you want something different than what big hotel chains offer, then consider Rittenhouse 1715. Most of all, if character is more important to you than anything else, then this is the hotel for you. The hotel is expanding and will be offering more rooms in the future. I look forward to seeing what they will do with the new rooms.

Thank you, Doug, Charles (didn’t get to meet him but talked to him over the phone), Shakirah, Madison, and Elijah for taking care of my family and my parents when we were there.

From the moment I spoke with James on the phone to inquire about a room around Valentine's Day weekend, I knew we were going to have a fantastic experience! We spent three nights in room 212, which included a fireplace (electronic), and a comfy Queen bed. The staff were on their game, and we felt right at home. We've stayed in Philly many times, and the Rittenhouse 1715 did not disappoint! Where else can you feel like you're in a European Countryside Inn, right in the heart of downtown Philly!

From Joyce greeting us with her beautiful smile, to Jenna's helpful suggestions in the afternoon, to Al's excellent suggestions and lively conversation during the Inn's nightly wine & cheese service, the Inn's staff succeeded in having two NYC-dwellers relax!

Thank you's also go to Victor in the overnight staff and Tina, for their help and guidance to enjoying Philly.

The Inn was spotless, and the room complete with great amenities such as plush terry robes and slippers, Moulton Brown products, and a Niagara Falls-like waterfall shower.

We will definitely be back! Thank you!

We spent one night and would not hesitate to return. The hotel is superbly located around the corner from Rittenhouse Square with parking across the street or around the corner. It is a classic old building that retains it’s character while providing modernized comforts. Our room was quite and roomy enough for two. Featuring a very nice shower and bath with quality amenities such as ample electric outlets (a pet peeve of mine), hair dryer, TV and great bedding and towels. it could use an extra chair and suitcase stand, but that would probably have been provided if requested. We had to depart too early for the free continental breakfast, but the evening wine and cheese was a nice bonus. And the price for this area of the city was very reasonable.

I booked this hotel for my 85 yo parents. They had to walk up 2 flights of stairs to get to their room. I was told the only other option was a room that needed to be cleaned. The young person offered to clean the room but fully admitted he was not trained to do so. After a long discussion, my parents had already settled in their room and did not want to move. I remained worried they would fall walking up and down the stairs. The “breakfast” included cheap grocery store packaged pastries, room temp juices and make your own coffee. We had to ask for plates and silverware. The eating area is in the lobby on some bench chairs with small tables that provided no room to place ones plates or cups. After complaining, the manager reached out to me and offered a partial refund but I never received any sort of compensation.

Dear DeJ, Thank you for providing this important feedback regarding your stay. I sincerely apologize to you and your parents for the lack of information about the hotel design and elevator access. Our breakfast options continue to increase in both quantity and quality as we are gaining more space after our initial opening in March. We hope you consider having your parents return in the near future to stay with us again and please reach out to us prior to their arrival so we can ensure they are in an elevator accessible room. Sincerely,

This was a lovely hotel in a perfect location to enjoy lots of what Philly has to offer! The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and the bathroom was amazing! I especially appreciated the extra large bath towels. There was a wine and cheese reception in the drawing room in the evening, which lead to some nice conversation with other guests. Fresh pastries were provided in the morning along with tea and coffee. There was a small fridge with drinks in the lobby as well as snacks. I loved the European vibe and the character of the space. I’ll definitely be back!

I'm not sure what we loved more - the beautiful and comfortable rooms, the genuine warmth and hospitality from the staff, or the perfect location in Center City! For us, it was probably the staff that made our stay so wonderful. At a crazy reasonable price, you get a European boutique experience and we loved every detail about our stay. Can't say enough good things about this little gem of a hotel. SPECIAL NOTE: Their COVID protocols were spot on and made us feel extra safe.

1715 Rittenhouse is located around the corner from the picturesque Rittenhouse Square. It is a short walk away from a number of delicious restaurants and bars. This area is popular for couples (like ourselves) but also college graduates and their families.

The staff at 1715 are wonderful to work with. Before I booked my reservation, I requested a video tour of the property to ensure it would be perfect for my engagement weekend and they were incredibly accommodating. They informed me of the hotel’s humble beginnings as an AirBNB and of their expansion that is underway.

The décor and unique design of each room is what won me over. It truly is a boutique hotel and is currently undergoing renovations to meet their standards. The staff make EVERY attempt to ensure that these changes do not affect your stay. They will also give you great recommendations for sightseeing and eating.

Be aware that parking is not included in your reservation. The doorman will kindly mind your vehicle as you check-in and out so that you will not get ticketed. You will be given a list of all public parking garages in the area that they partner with (we recommend the Lattimer Garage for a short walk away with the most reasonable price).

We cannot wait to work with these folks again!

On the plus side, this truly is a fantastic location: walking distance to so many things, easy cab ride to the train station, right in the heart of things, but on a relatively quiet street. The decor and general feel of the hotel reminded us of charming, older European hotels, but our room (The Jane) was much larger than most in Europe :) The staff were 100% helpful and welcoming, including in the speakeasy bar, where we had great drinks. So why not 5 stars? There were little things but they added up: the bed was a bit firm, the sheets a bit rough, the hot water a bit difficult to achieve, and we heard some noise from the street, the neighboring room, and even the room below (it came up through the vent). Fortunately, none of the noise happened when we were sleeping so, overall, we were well-rested. The continental breakfast is great for folks who like continental breakfasts, but I need some cooked eggs and a latte, so we ended up going out--fortunately, there are lots of cafes and restaurants close by. I think the price is warranted by the location, the quality of the service, and the truly charming decor, but I'd want the basics of what I need in terms of bed, shower, and breakfast to be different in order to pay that much again.

We value our guests feedback, and we are glad you were over-all satisfied with our product. I also want to apologize for the challenges with the flow of the hot water, firmness of the bed and roughness of the sheets, I informed both our Housekeeping and Maintenance departments of these issues, and a resolution is in process. Housed in an early 20th century building, Rittenhouse 1715 has an old-school boarding house feel to it. Our room was cozy with classic decor and a non-working fireplace. Because of COVID, there was no breakfast service, but the friendly staff brought us some complementary fruit and muffins in the morning. The location is pretty much ideal. It is close to great restaurants, but on a quiet side street. I suspect this won't be our last visit, either.

The staff is cheerful and helpful (restaurant recommendations) and the room and common spaces are warm, immaculate and well appointed.
