Booked to stay at the Sonesta Philadelphia for the pool, which was great and got lots of sun. The hotel was average at best. Stayed 8 nights in total and 3 days the room wasn’t cleaned. Cleaning staff were lovely but just seemed over worked. Had a few issues in the room, safe was broken and the toilet broke but these were resolved quickly. Decor in the hotel looks like they are in the middle of a refurb but they are not. Carpet in the room was filthy and stained our socks so we had to wear foot wear all the time. Coffee shop was good but opening times were inconsistent. When we return to Philly we will definitely choose a different hotel.

Hotel's Favorite
We had an amazing stay at the Sonesta Rittenhouse. Suzette and her entire staff were welcoming and helpful. The location is fabulous; we loved walking to Rittenhouse Square, City Hall, and Reading Terminal Market. The beds and pillows are extremely comfortable, which was lovely after exploring the city all day. The room was very clean and spacious. Sad we didn't make it to the pool, but it looked fantastic. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay in Philadelphia.

Really happy with this hotel. I booked with them directly over the phone and they were able to honor my price match request. When we arrived at the hotel, they checked us in right away, instead of making us wait until 4pm. It probably helped that we arrived at an unpopular time on Wednesday, so availability was likely pretty good. We wound up with a 2 Queen Beds room and it was clean and spacious. Plenty of outlets for charging phones and electronics, so that is always a plus. The bathroom was sizeable, with a large counter and a real door. The in-room refrigerator was useful for keeping water bottles cold, and there was also a large flat screen TV, for those who like to watch TV while travelling. Sound-proofing seemed to be pretty good; we couldn't hear our neighbors at all, though sometimes we could hear folks directly in the hallway, or sirens from the street below. We were on the highest floor (25), so that certainly helped to keep the street noise to a minimum. The hotel sits on Market Street, just a bit removed from the opulent City Hall. Market Street itself is not so exciting to visit, though it does serve as the major thoroughfare for cars cutting through the city. Rittenhouse Square itself is actually a couple blocks south of the hotel, so walk more in that direction to find shops, restaurants, etc. This property does not have many cute "hang out" areas, or complimentary coffee, or other stuff that other hotels sometimes offer. No stunning rooftop views. There was a DJ playing in the modestly-sized lobby on Friday night until maybe like 9pm. Breakfast is not included in the room rate, nor really offered. Instead, there is a snack counter ("ArtBar") that serves Starbucks coffee and takeaway breakfast/sandwiches. A Ruth's Chris steakhouse is also on-site. Parking beside the hotel costs $54/night. There are other lots nearby that cost a bit less, so definitely shop around. Although the outdoor pool and an exercise room were pretty much the only included amenities, the hotel charges a $19 "destination" fee, plus a few extra dollars "hospitality levy" for each day that you stay, in addition to numerous taxes, so increase your nightly rate accordingly. All told, you might think of this as more of a 4.5 star review, but considering what is probably typical for the area, it's hard to ding them too much. Value for money is pretty good. The hotel location is very convenient, the rooms were clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully arranged. The staff was always friendly whenever we interacted. The hotel was also able to hold bags for us after check-out, which is important for making the most of your sightseeing time. Altogether, this Sonesta makes for a good base while sightseeing in Philly.

Elana, thank you for the comprehensive feedback about your recent stay at the Sonesta Philadelphia Rittenhouse Square. It is highly encouraging to acknowledge that your booking process was smooth and that our team could honor your price match request. This depicts our commitment to our guests' satisfaction. We're also pleased that you could enjoy an early check-in; our front desk colleagues aim to make your arrival as convenient as possible. It's great to hear the room met your requirements, providing enough space, cleanliness, and accessibility to outlets for charging your devices. The tranquility of your environment is important to us and we are glad to know the higher floor helped minimize any outdoor noise. Our central location on Market Street is indeed advantageous to our guests who look to explore the city. We appreciate your reflection on the locale and the directions given to Rittenhouse Square and the neighborhood shops and restaurants. We acknowledge your observation regarding the absence of additional hangout areas and complimentary offerings, such as coffee. Each of our guests' experiences matters to us, and receiving constructive input helps us to enhance what we offer. We also noted your comments about the lobby entertainment and understand that some may prefer a longer duration or varied experience. Regarding the breakfast and dining options, we value your comments on the ArtBar and the on-site Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. Our goal is to provide an array of options that cater to different guest preferences. Your mention of parking costs and additional fees is duly noted. We aspire to uphold transparency in our communication about pricing, and we appreciate you highlighting this point. The positive aspects you've mentioned in your review about Sonesta Philadelphia Rittenhouse Square, such as the strategic location, comfort and cleanliness of the rooms, and the friendliness of our colleagues indeed reassure us of our commitment towards guest satisfaction. We appreciate your kind words about our ability to hold bags after check-out, as we always want to add value to your travel experience in any way we can. Thank you once again for recognizing the overall value and convenience offered during your stay. We hope to be your preferred choice of accommodation when you travel to Philadelphia in the future.

travel to Philly every month for a week on business and have stayed all over Center City so I’ve become familiar with the local hotels. Most hotels are pretty good to excellent, but Sonesta (and the rundown, dirty, bare bones Club Quarters) is not worth the money or the time. Before you arrive they send you an email that goes on and on with ‘fine print’ that caught my attention because of the length of it. Having practiced law in a prior life I felt compelled to read it and discovered hidden in the middle of it all that they charge you an extra $15 per day that ‘you can use’ at their bar (but NOT for alcohol) and their “Lobby Market” (three shelves of junk food by the reception desk). Do they mention this charge anywhere else, like when you check in? Nope. I might be conspiratorial minded, but it sure seems to me that they want the money and they don’t want you to actually get anything for it. I find that sleazy, and an appropriate intro to this very below average hotel that charges above average rates. The service here is poor to downright rude and terrible. The parking situation is a joke. THE MATTRESS IS THE WORST I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED! The mattress is so old and worn out it sags about FOUR inches to the side and you, literally could inadvertently roll off the bed in your sleep! The hotel is sort of clean; just sort of. I could go on and on (like what a joke their gym is even for a hotel), but the bottom line is this place charges Hilton, Hyatt, etc. prices, and it really is on par with a Holiday Inn Express, which is not to denigrate Holiday Inn Express which are actually good value for the money. Rather, the point is that Sonesta pretends it’s an upscale business hotel and charges accordingly, and it is anything but. I’ve stayed here twice now; once about six years ago, and again in September 2023 because I forgot how bad the place was from six years ago and they were offering discounts. Finally, there are so many good hotels in Philadelphia that deliver what they claim and charge appropriately for it, why waste your time and money on Sonesta? Avoid this hotel.

Jdhertz, we want to express our sincere apologies that your recent stay fell short of your expectations. It's obvious from your remarks that the experience was far from satisfactory, and that is certainly not the standard we aim to achieve. It's clear that you encountered a disparity with regard to additional charges. We genuinely want our guests to be well informed, and it's regrettable that the clarification regarding the additional daily fee didn't come across clearly. In relation to your remarks about the service, we deeply regret any instance in which you felt our team members were not showing the courteousness we pride ourselves on. We'll ensure your comments are taken to heart as we continually strive to improve how we service our esteemed guests. We apologize for the discomfort related to your sleeping amenities. Your description of the mattress's condition is concerning and definitely something we will look into promptly. Your comfort is paramount and we're disheartened to learn of the inconvenience you endured. Concerning cleanliness and fitness facilities, we always aim to maintain our premises to the highest standards, so to hear they came across as lackluster is disheartening. We will take your comments into account and take swift action to improve these aspects of our service. We are especially sorry to have disappointed you for a second time. Despite your disappointing experience, we would welcome the opportunity to regain your trust in the future and demonstrate the exceptional hospitality we usually take pride in.

The hotel was very nice, the pool was great. Secuirty were very nice. But the rooms were ok, very small. The service was ok, not so warming. There was a lot of dust by the windows. I was looking forward to it though so we made the best of it.

Deceitful. Not once when I checked in/out was I told about a $22 resort fee that didn’t exist when I booked the hotel. If it wasn’t for a CC statement I’d have never known. Their response (Sonesta corporate) was nothing short of “too bad, tough luck.” Glad I didn’t buy a candy bar from them. It’d probably cost an extra $50 after returning home. I stayed longer than one night so $22 adds up and I find it odd that when running my card for incidentals this new fee was never disclosed. Stay at the Hilton

We choose Sonesta based on a prior stay at a different property and because of location near center city. The staff was very friendly and the hotel was clean. Parking was convenient as it is in the same building as the hotel. Parking is extra which is standard for Phila. We had a corner room so had a good view of downtown. Was easy to get to as well. Will stay here again next trip to Phila.

And the award for first hotel to ever charge me an early check-in fee goes to…Sonesta Rittenhouse Square. I stayed at the Sonesta for 3 days, arriving on a Sunday morning around 10am. What surprised me about the early check-in fee is that they didn’t have to prepare a room for me. A room was readily available. They charged me the fee and handed me my room key. Literally. I knew in advance that there was a daily destination fee. But, the destination fees combined with the early check-in fee felt like a money grab. The room was sufficient and the location was great. I really like Sonesta properties, but I likely won’t return to this location.

Hello Cheketa, Thank you for your review. We deeply regret that you feel this way about the early check-in fee. When an arrival comes to check-in prior to the time allotted, the hotel has to unblock others in order to make room. You are correct the room was ready however it push another guest back on the waiting list. Sorry you will not be returning, however we wanted to provide a reasonable explanation to your comments.

Quick trip to Philly for business reasons. Picked this hotel due to proximity to my business travel location. Hotel was clean. Check in smooth. Room was ok. Bed too soft but of course this is personal preference. Checked in late, ran out to get food, came back and watched some tv. When I finally was ready to turn out the lights and sleep, only then did I notice a high pitched, very annoying sound emanating from somewhere. My room must have been by a utility or HVAC/mechanical closet. UGH. I should have called the front desk but didn't want the hassle of moving rooms late night . .probably would have been worth it though b/c I didn't sleep well at all as that sound kept me up. Don't put rooms by noisy mechanical closets. I also am quite sure I stated 'no adjoining room' on my reservation but that is what I got. This happens all the time so not exclusive to this hotel . . guess hotels just don't read that part of the reso. Not a pleasant stay but, in all fariness, I didn't report it. Will not make that mistake next time.

Hello Sunshine371, Thank you for your rating and comments regarding your most recent stay. We deeply regret not meeting your expectations and sincerely apologize for the inconveniences you experienced. This experience is truly not indicative of the service we pride ourselves and rest assured we will follow up on these items. We do hope you will provide us another opportunity when you visit the area in the future, so we can prove this was more the exception than the rule. Thank you.

Great location. Arrived early as I flew in from The Uk. Paid $40 for early check in. Checking was at 4pm. Which I thought was pretty late. When I booked I had no idea it was that late. That meant me waiting around for hours to check in. Not really accommodating as I just had a long flight. Was really hoping to use the outside pool. As it was a hot day. But no it was closed. Be aware of hidden charges! $21 dollars extra fees that I wasn’t aware of. It wasn’t what I hoped it to be! Just average! Shame, as I was hoping to have some me time to relax at the hotel and use the facilities.

Hello 949dionner, Thank you for your review and rating. It's unfortunate that you believe our hotel is just average. This is not indicative of the service we pride ourselves and we sincerely apologize for our shortcoming. As all of the booking websites have stated, the pool is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. We can not understand the confusion behind our messaging and we will verify again this is the information stated. As it relates to our Destination Fees, it is clearly on your booking reservations and not a hidden fee. It's unfortunate you did not see all of the information. We would suggest making future reservations on Sonesta.com that has all of this information clearly stated.
