Nestled steps away from Times Square, the Sanctuary Hotel New York has earned praise for its spotless rooms and comfortable beds, contributing to a warm and inviting atmosphere that guests adore. Despite the cozy charm, some visitors have raised concerns about the compact size of the rooms and the noise levels at night.
The hotel's service stands out, with staff members receiving accolades for their exceptional hospitality. While opinions on value vary, many appreciate the complimentary breakfast and the convenient location, though the trade-off may be the smaller amenities.

We arrived early afternoon on a Tuesday and before we got out of our bus transfer, a doorman from the hotel had opened the back doors and began to help us with our luggage. He carried them to the front desk and didn't seem to even expect a tip. Straightaway our first impressions were positive!
Andre at the front desk did a fantastic job checking us in, letting us know of services they could help us with such as booking broadway tickets, getting reservations for dinner etc. Facilities fee was explained to us and what was included for that fee (as we booked through Virgin Holidays, this fee was waived). We were offered a drink whilst we checked in of tea, coffee or water. Drinks were available 24/7 in the lobby and you could help yourselves.
When we reached our room, which was only on the second floor, we were facing the front of the hotel which did get a little noisy with some building work a few feet from the hotel but it didn't disturb us too much. We felt the size of the room was perfect for the two of us and the fact the bathroom wasn't separate didn't bother us at all. There is a privacy curtain to go around the shower. Throughout our stay, there wasn't a single time the front doors weren't held open by a doorman as we entered or left which was a fantastic touch.
One drawback was there was only a single lift to facilitate all guests which meant you sometimes had to wait for it to reach your floor. The breakfast in the morning was more than we expected - hot food including scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and potatoes with either waffles or french toast and then there were pastries, toast, cereal, fruit, yoghurt and juice and coffee. A very welcome addition to our stay. This was included in our holiday through Virgin.
We visited the rooftop bar once during our stay which has a separate lift to reach it. We visited when a private event was being held so we were asked to move areas as we hadn't realised we had stood in their area. We also had sat down at one of the tables up there with a drink without realising it was only for those who were eating. There were no reserved signs or signs stating this which got a little frustrating. It was nice enough up there but not a highlight of our trip. I was hoping to see out a bit more at the view but you couldn't see anything which I feel deters away from the idea of a rooftop bar.
One point I must add is HOW AMAZING this hotel smells. The smell of the lobby and the rooms was something my fiance and I wanted to bottle up and take back with us, along with the pillows !! The bed was so comfy and the pillows were something you could sink into which could get dangerous when you were so tired from the all of the walking. The location of this hotel was literally perfect for us. It was a stones throw from Times Square. In less than 30 seconds, you were in front of the big lights and could reach the main square which really helped. It was also a few minutes walk from Rockefeller centre!

Dear Elizabeth H, I appreciate greatly your taking the time to write so thorough and comprehensive a review. I cannot tell you how delightful it is for me to see that you enjoyed your time with us, all the way from the UK! We do our very best to make certain our hotel, from our rooms, to our lobby, are catered squarely on the Guest Experience, yes including the actual scent in the lobby and the feather distribution in our pillows! I will make certain that Andre is made aware of your kind words and your review, as a whole, will be shared with the staff as an example as ideal Guest feedback. We strive to create unique, unforgettable experiences for our Guests and feedback such as yours allows us to grow and reflect on our service. Highly recommended, I can’t say enough about this hotel, the stall was very friendly and accommodating. We stayed in 2 different rooms after extending our stay. The deluxe king was on a lower floor with a street view. You could hear some outside noise if you really listened but it was quiet and at least had a view. The room was slightly small but plenty of space for a couple . Just as pictured the shower has a glass surround with a privacy curtain, and a separate small bathroom with sink.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed the room. We decided to book an extra night and stayed in a regular king. It was slightly smaller and no view but sill a beautiful room. The included breakfast was hot, delicious and freshly prepared. It also came with fresh pastries, fruit and yogurt. The breakfast staff was highly attentive and super friendly. This place is literally steps from Times Square and just blocks from Grand Central.
the Haven rooftop bar is also a bonus and a great place to grab a drink, snack, or a meal. overall a very Chic trendy hotel. Highly recommended, we’ll be back.

The hotel itself is beautiful, rooms are adequately sized and clean. The staff are so willing to help with any requests, and genuinely seem to love their job. They made our trip so special, so a huge thank you to them! Despite loving NYC and wanting to spend most of our time exploring, the hotel was a haven and it was so nice knowing we could return there to relax. We especially enjoyed the fresh water provided every morning, and me and my partner still speak of the beautiful fragrance that inhabits the lobby (wish we knew what it was!). The breakfast is delicious, full of amazing pastries but you may crave something a bit more substantial after all the exploring of the previous night. All in all, it would be difficult to fault this hotel, we loved it so much and were sad to leave it. If we return to NYC, I would 100% want to stay here again.

The hotel is "fine," but that is it. For the prices charged and website promising STAR service, I expected much more. The hotel is not offering housekeeping because of "COVID" but it's probably more of a staffing issue. Breakfast was supposed to be included, but I was not told that it had to be ordered in advance. So the next day I had no breakfast and was not even offered coffee or anything. For my second night, I was sure to place my order in advance. Coffee and juice were delivered to my door, but breakfast never arrived and no other alternative or solution was offered.
NYC hotel rooms can be small, but this room is laughably tiny. Really, really small. The shower is open to the bedroom and essentially only 1 person can use the sink/bathroom/shower at one time.
There is no lobby area or any area to wait until a room is ready.
The restaurant and rooftop bar seem to be very popular and the doormen/BOUNCERS practically stopped me from going in to the hotel every time I returned until I showed them a room key. There were lines of people to get in to the hotel and it was very off putting to be questioned by the bellmen every time I arrived.
There is a lot of construction around the hotel, which makes a lot of dust, but the noise cannot be heard from the room.

Dear Bethany B, Thank you for taking the time to give feedback in reference to your time with us though it needn't be said that I wish your stay had garnered more positive feelings. Upon check in, Guests are informed that servicing of the rooms (more specifically at the time of your stay) is modify slightly for COVID-19 precautions. Any and all sundries Guests require can be brought to the room at request. Of course since your stay full housekeeping service has resumed but I apologize that this was clearly not explained to a satisfactory level during your stay. Additionally I apologize that your breakfast experience was less than ideal. You are absolutely correct that an alternative solution or exception should have been offered to making certain you received your breakfast and I sad to hear it was not done so. I will be certain to follow up with my team about offering service solutions. I will also look into your experiences with the door staff. The team at the door's priority is Guest safety and security, making certain only patrons and Guests enter the premises. Having said that, Guest comfort and service standards absolutely are paramount to the overall experience and I am deeply troubled you were made to feel otherwise when walking into your own hotel! This will be investigated as well. We strive to create unique, unforgettable experiences for our Guests and feedback such as yours allows us to grow and reflect on our service. If and when you plan to come to New York again, please reach out to me and we will be certain to take care of you once more and show you our commitment to service! I'm going to split this hotel review up into two halves, the good and the bad. We travelled from London for a 5night stay booking through Virgin for essentially a sightseeing city escape. Starting off with the good the staff were always polite, any problem we had or anything we asked was never a problem. The hotel is located central New York, alot of the typical sightseeing attractions are in walking distance. It's also bed and breakfast so being able to wake up and not worry about your first meal is nice. The room was also always kept nice clean and tidy. Now onto some of the more underwhelming parts of out stay. The rooms are very small, this is made worse by the fact that the hotel has a very dark theme going all the way through. Our room had windows but let in no light atall. The bed was extremely uncomfortable it felt like the mattress was so worn I was laying slanted towards the headboard. The room also had DIY issues like wallpaper coming away from the wall at the bottom of the windows due to mould (which had been stapled back) and the metal on the headside lamp was flaking. The door to the bathroom was just a slide door which didnt close properly unless you slammed it into the track on the wall. Also the door to the room feels like it doesn't close securely, once closed, you can rattle the door about. I'm not sure if this is the reason you can hear alot of outside noise from your room.
Overall we had a fairly good experience at the sanctuary hotel I think the good outweighs the bad. I would recommend this hotel if your staying for a short trip and need somewhere in central New York.

Dear Jack Arnold, I would firstly like to thank you kindly for your generous compliments of the staff, it is ever our goal to provide complete and total Guest Service; I will make certain the staff are made aware of your comments. It is unfortunate that such wonderful feedback must come bundled with your disappointment in reference to your room. I would be very much interested, if it would not much trouble you, to reach out in reference to your stay and the room you were in as your comments are extremely distressing! Comfort, be it though the interactions with our Guests, or through our beds, is of paramount importance and I would like to have a chance to discuss your particular stay in depth. Outstanding hospitality. Van, Jimmy and Liam made us feel like we were part of the Sanctuary family. That's hard to find in bustling Times Square. If you want to feel like just a number go to those big chains. If you want to feel honored as a guest go to Sanctuary. Any request made was promptly met with a smile and courteousness. Thank you Sanctuary Team!
Covid did make things a little less traditional: breakfast to rooms was just okay and daily cleaning of rooms didn't happen automatically. But I for one appreciate the times and totally understand and everyone else should as well.
For those saying the rooms are small I recommend getting a Deluxe Room. It's plenty big. The beds and bedding were soooooooo comfy.
Is there street noise: yup. You're in Times Square. People don't go to Times Square for peace and tranquility (Sanctuary Hotel will give you some though!).
I highly recommend Sanctuary if you want a more personalized experience and want to feel appreciated as a guest. You will not be disappointed .We can't wait to go back in the future to enjoy the full experience of what Sanctuary has to offer. Please support smaller hotels instead of big corporate hotels.

This hotel has a nice intimate vibe to it and has perfect location, within meters you are in Times Square and it's great for walking everywhere - from hotel 20mins and you're in Madison Square Garden or from hotel 20mins in opposite direction you're in Central Park.
We booked a standard room and have to admit, the room was on a small side. After NYC we were travelling to Canada to go skiing so we had a lot of luggage and it was tight. However I think they have bigger room options available for additional fee.
Additionally there were no doors to the bathroom or wardrobe (they use curtains instead - my only wonder is how often they change/wash them), however rest assured, the WC has a sliding door!
Whilst I didn't expect amazing views, one of our windows was overlooking cement wall and the other was looking into a another room's window. This is not something I'm used to (maybe it's a norm in NYC with all the skyscrapers) and this also meant that very little natural light would come into the room. As I was planning to be out and about doing things around NYC, it didn't bother me too much but something to bear in mind for others.
Our room was right next to the steps to the Sushi lab/rooftop bar so it was quite loud in the evening with people coming and going. If you are a light sleeper make sure to let reception know on ahead of arrival/check-in. I can fall asleep to noise without a problem so didn't bother me and the bed and pillows were comfy so I was happy.
All in all, not the best hotel I stayed in, it did the job considering I would leave early in the morning and come back late at night after all the activities/shows I had planned so literally just used it to sleep and shower in. For those wanting to walk around NYC, this hotel has perfect central location.

Dear Dominika O, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us and I am happy to hear that overall it was a pleasant one. Our boutique rooms are uniquely appointed and situated, the peek-a-boo curtain can certainly be a surprise to Guests to be sure! This is part of the reason our room photographs are so detailed; we want to be able to provide Guests with the tools to do their research thoroughly. Part of the reason we specifically market our rooms for their bed type and not view is chiefly as you stated above, we are nine stories tall and surrounded by buildings on three sides, our view options are therefore extremely limited. I do hope that our staff was accommodating, something I did not see mentioned in your review, but again I thank you for taking the time to give us your thoughts. We strive to create unique, unforgettable experiences for our Guests and feedback such as yours allows us to grow and reflect on our service. I hope to see you again soon and as you know, please let me know if you require any assistance! James Valdez Guest Services Manager The Sanctuary Hotel

My husband and I recently stayed in this hotel. It was so conveniently located to Times Square and Broadway, and the price, compared to other similarly-located hotels, was outstanding. The rooms were tastefully decorated, the staff very nice, and the included breakfast very good (although it's a bit cheap to charge extra for espresso!). You won't get views of Times Square here like at the nearby Marriott, but then you won't get the price either. The hotel has dimly lit common areas and a swanky vibe that made our middle-aged selves laugh. Our room was on the small side and the bedding was not luxurious, but, for the price, everything exceeded my expectations. My only major complaints were that the rooms were not sound-proof, and the area in front of the sink was limited, so it was difficult to have two people getting ready at the same time. Despite these issues, I would definitely recommend the hotel for NYC visitors on a budget.

I booked here last minute after my original hotel closed down unexpectedly. I am so happy I did. The hotel is beautiful and the staff is absolutely the nicest hotel staff I've ever had.
We come to NYC for Broadway and Sanctuary is perfectly located for that type of trip. It's half a block from Times Square and a huge chunk of the theatres so walking back to drop something off or quickly change before a show is so much easier than a lot of the other hotels we've stayed at.
They have multiple restaurants that you can easily book reservations for right in the lobby. We chose Sushi Lab and were lucky enough to sit at the counter. The food and staff were awesome. It's on the roof, but it's closed in and heated so no worries about eating on a cold January night. The only con about this specific restaurant is that the elevator only goes to the 6th floor so you do need to go up a few flights of stairs to get there and you have to walk by the rooms on the 6th floor so I'm sure it probably gets loud as people leave, but they close pretty early possibly to account for that.
The room was great. We had a king room so it was a little bigger than a standard queen room, but even if our room was smaller it still would be a great room. I was surprised and happy that there was a drink fridge and a selection of drinks in there room for purchase. The bed was a bit on the harder side but not too bad and the pillows were very soft. I have some neck issues that the pillows were not good for, but I'll just bring a travel pillow next time.
Just a note about the bathroom- The bathroom is different from other hotels. It's not a separate room, but an area closed off by a curtain. We've had this setup before so we were fine with it, but if you're not super comfy with your partner showering right next to your bed then this setup might not be the best for you. The toilet is in its own room though which is different than the other hotels I've been to with this same setup which usually just has the toilet next to the shower.
The only real con I found was that our room was right next to the elevator which was very loud all night. There was also an issue with a screeching noise in the hallway one night. It sounded like the fire alarm battery was low. I called about it at around 1am but it didn't get fixed until the morning.
Overall we loved staying here and will definitely be coming back!

Lori L, I can't say that I am particularly happy that another hotel sadly closed its doors, I can admit to enjoying the silver lining that it brought you to us! We didn’t get off to the best start with this hotel but I must say the reception staff were exceptional in dealing with the issues we had. Very understanding and accommodating.
The first room allocated had a musty smell and after reporting this to reception, we were swiftly moved to a room at the front of the hotel facing the street. This room was extremely noisy, and I know given the location being so close to Times Square that this should be expected, but it honestly sounded like we were on the street and not in a hotel room! We did spend the first night in this room but mentioned it to reception in the morning. Reception staff were understanding and arranged for us to be moved to another room.
The room we eventually settled in didn’t have a view, we were looking out to a brick wall. This made the room feel a little dark, which wasn’t helped by only having 1 lamp in the room, but to be honest for all the time we spent in our room, it really wasn’t a huge issue. The rooms are pretty clean, however, the bedding did have a slight musty smell to it - I’m guessing this is perhaps due to where it’s being stored.
I’ve seen a lot of reviews complaining about breakfast. We thought breakfast was great to be honest. It’s enough for starting your day, and it’s included in the facility fee of $25 per night. This worked out pretty well for us since we were travelling as a family of 3.
The location of the hotel is perfect. Times Square is just at the end of the street, and it’s also within walking distance to a lot of the main tourist attractions. The exterior is gorgeous,a truly beautiful building. The reception area is stunning too, very welcoming with a real fire creating a warm & cosy vibe. It has a lovely scent too!
