The Carlyle will always be the Carlyle. Amazing time in one of NY most iconic hotels. From the check-in experience to the room service; from the Bemelmans experience to the continual smiling valet and courtesy car service; an impeccable and quintessential New York experience.

The Carlyle is a grande dame of a hotel; located on the Upper East Side on a quiet street. The hotel has a sense of ywarmth and a scale which is appealing. The staff is excellent (a special thank you to Stephanie at reception for being an all around gem). The Carlyle is ravishing and knows what it is and what it is doing.

Breakfast was delightful and the gym is suitable for a hotel of this size - well thought out and though small well conceived.

Bemelman’s bar is a treat, bustling but the service is nothing less than stellar at all times.

The rooms are a good size and very comfortable; the issues I have however lie within the rooms. The door to each room is heavy and thus makes an enormous slam when closing. This is especially noticeable in the early hours when some of us jet lagged souls were trying to sleep. The constant slam was excruciating and unnecessary. The bathrooms are noticeably small, which I can live with but the quality of the bath towels are another matter. The Carlyle’s towels are more suitable to a Holiday Inn than a 5 star hotel - small and thin bath towels are not really good enough. Finally blackout curtains would certainly aid in ensuring guests have a good night’s sleep.

There is much to love about the Carlyle and I certainly enjoyed my stay. I would have enjoyed it more had the rooms been a bit more conducive to providing guests with a good nights’ sleep and the quality of the towels were suitable to an establishment of the Carlyle’s standing.

If you ever want know what a home away from home is like, this is the place.
The staff are incredibly welcoming and will do just about everything too make you feel comfortable and at ease.
Rooms are decorated in a fashion that could resemble a palace in the 1930s. There is nothing out of place.
Overall I don’t think there’s a hotel in New York that could come close to the value money ratio.

This great bastion of NYC hotel history is a pale shadow of its former self. From a reservations staff that tries to change room on you (watch out for "upgrades") and a hopeless system of check-in (where you send your ID period to check in, so that they lose it immediately, and they treat you like a complete stranger every time you approach the desk) to glacial room service, broken elevators, malfunctioning keys, the days of the Carlyle as "home away from home" are clearly over. Little things like the elimination of complementary coffee—I assume this was done as an expedience during COVID but restored in other hotels—and the virtual boarding up of the area that used to have the coffee (giving the entrance hall a shabby look), makes the huge cost of the rooms feel like being cheated. "Now the coffee's in the dining room" (which means an endless wait). The justly popular bar at the Carlyle has, for people staying in the hotel, the disadvantage not just of passing one's way through the crowds, but of being treated as if one is cutting the line by Carlyle staff, who bark at you as you emerge from the lobby. The side door is now closed during the day, again giving the feel that things are going down hill. And in all of this, there seems to be no coordination among staff: reservations are forgotten, luggage misplaced, room service arrives hours late, having been left somewhere to cool down.

Have been a loyal Rosewood customer for ~8 years. So I wanted to break up my stay from FS downtown to make my way to UES to try out the Carlyle. Booked a superior suite and with its 1.5 bathrooms, there was no bathtub. Requested to change even though room was advertised as to having a bathtub. Was important because I was experiencing back pain on this trip and the only thing to alleviate was a bath. Was offered to pay an extra $750/nt to receive one. Ridiculous. Requested to downgrade to a regular room with a bathtub. After some back and forth, I was relocated to a superior king room, but was not offered any sort of adjustment in price. So as far as I can tell, I’m still paying the full price for the suite that I didn’t stay in.

Later that night, returned back to the room for a bath but the bath water was a yellow/brown color. Mentioned to the front desk and they had sent up a mechanic. The water discoloration was due to the water settling within the pipes because the upper floors had an issue so the resolve was to just flush out the water. It was already midnight at this point and the tub was now contaminated so I cut my losses.

One of the main reasons why I wanted to stay at the Carlyle was for the Bemelman’s bar. Unfortunately, late dinner reservations rendered my partner and I exhausted so we weren’t able to drop in during our stay. So on the last day we asked a few hotel staff members if we could view the artwork along the walls since I’ve been a big fan of Madeline since my childhood. Upon entering the bar, the hotel personnel prefaced the bartender that we were quickly stopping in to check out the artwork. We were met with huffing and puffing by the bartender and even Mr Earl Rose himself. Mr. rose acted as if we rudely inconvenienced him by returning the sharpest glares in our direction. As we felt like we overstayed our welcome within the whole 60 seconds that we were admiring the artwork on the walls, we decided to leave. While heading out the door, Mr Rose again rudely gestured us to get out. I normally wouldn’t be bothered by this instance but given the fact that we were trying to be as polite as possible and remain out of the way for the entire minute we visited the bar, I just felt like it was completely unnecessary and lacked any sort of human decency.

So do yourselves a favor, unless you need to be in the UES, take your business elsewhere. I happen to know the FS downtown is fantastic and will make you feel like you belong.

We were booked in to stay in a Superior suite for 4 nights, We were brought to our room with our luggage and we were not shown or explained any of the different services as in how to work the air conditioning etc.
When I looked around the room and finally got to the bathroom, it was a joke.
For a suite it was the size of a wardrobe, one toilet, one sink and a very narrow shower. Two people could not fit in the bathroom, no shelving, no place to hang a towel.
When I looked at the bathrobe it was all stained, one of the designer chairs
was also badly stained.
I brought down the robe to reception and was offered to look at another suite the following day, which we did, but it was no better.
During our stay the chair in our room was not cleaned, the bathrobe was never replaced. I had requested a mirror to be brought up on our first night, so that my partner could do her make up and her hair, but the mirror never materialised even after 2 further requests.
The people of the Carlyle, in my opinion had no interest in any of my issues. We found the bar stuffy and you were made feel that you were lucky to be there.
In general I could not in anyway recommend this hotel.

Room 608 is too small. Please do not give me a room like that again. Additionally, please add a note to my file to replace the quilt with a sheet and blanket. Thank you. Also, thank you for remembering the pillow cases.

My husband and I stayed here during our wedding weekend and our experience was flawless. After staying at many different NYC hotels where the room was absurdly tiny, or the surrounding neighborhood left something to be desired, the Carlyle had none of those issues. We were upgraded to an exquisite and spacious suite with beautiful city views. The area around the hotel constitutes the nicest neighborhood in the city, and it was wonderful to walk around.
The staff was welcoming, and sent champagne to the room as a congratulations. They were enormously helpful in coordinating with our various vendors, and the house car was also a great amenity.
We appreciated the passes to ensure a table at Bemelmans as well, now that it’s more popular.
We had a fantastic stay and would happily stay again anytime n

My husband and I are staying at the Carlyle, we chose it over some of the other hotels we frequent when we are in New York because of its history and reputation. The staff in general have been excellent; friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The rooms are comfortable, especially the beds. We had one overlooking Madison Avenue and the decor was lovely, although the blinds in our room were stained on the sides and one had come out of its track.

That said, when we checked in we were informed the gym was under construction and given the option to use the Equinox which is a 15 minute walk away. Having used it twice (and done the walk in the pouring rain) when my husband mentioned to the front desk staff his disappointment in the situation the response was 'Well we don't charge for the gym here, it's free.' Nothing about this place is free. There isn't a separate charge for the lights either, all of these things are included in the price and it's one of the most expensive in Manhattan.

I booked a massage appointment, and the therapist Linda was very good. But again, that was under construction so they've set up makeshift therapy rooms in some of the hotel's suites. To get from the 'reception' to the therapy room, you have to walk through jackhammering. Not exactly the most of relaxing experiences. And the treatments are limited to massages and facials, the showers are out of use and there aren't even any slippers.

The hair salon staff I had were all very good, particularly Theresa, and I am pleased with the results. My appointment was at the end of the day, though, and it was clear the manager wanted everyone to finish up.

We are here for a relaxing break and would not have booked this hotel if we had known about the construction. There is nothing on the website telling people about the state of the amenities and the hotel is not offering guests any discounts on their stay or the spa treatments - it's still full Carlyle-level pricing.

I ordered room serivce one night. I had to be put on hold and then wait for them to ring me back. The order took 45 minutes which isn't out of the ordinary for a big hotel, but I would describe the food as average. We went to the bar for the first time tonight and it has a nice vibe with live piano. The service at the restaurant was impeccable, I had to send my mocktail back because the mint was so wilted but it was returned fresh and was delicious, as was the food.

We often stay at the Rosewood in Lonon, but overall this one has been a disappointment. Not sure I'd be rushing back.

I felt like I died and went to heaven when I first stepped into our signature Rosewood suite at the iconic Carlyle hotel . My jaw dropped to the floor when I caught sight of the totally unobstructed views of magical Manhattan surrounding us in the most dramatic way . I wanted to hug Diana from the Guest Experience team and who gifted us this most fabulous treat - one I will take with me to the grave . So thank you again Diana and team for giving us the opportunity of a lifetime to have the most coveted view of the Big Apple and the best city view we’ve ever had in any city we have traveled to . I loved the design of the room with windows wrapping around the entire space so you get a heavy dose of that insatiable view with every step you take in the impeccably decorated room . Even the bathroom had views overlooking the entire city . As if the stunning marble vanities and marble shower stalls weren’t enough eye candy . The wall paper with artist drawings of typical New York scenes really added a fun and whimsical yet elegant touch to the room .

Everything about this property was pure and utter delight. The hotel bar offered the best old fashioned cocktails I’d ever had and our dinner at Dowlings did not disappoint either . Everything we ordered was tantalisingly delicious ! And the service is quite unique in that every staff - whether the lovely hostess who seated us at the best table facing this gorgeous fireplace , or the waiter Mirim who prepared our steak Diane to perfection right at our table - all treated us with the utmost of warmth and affection . It felt like we’d known everyone for years , they made us feel like family . You’d expect a slightly pretentious attitude from the staff of such a high end luxury hotel but the staff were all down to earth and seemed to sincerely care about their guests and their comfort throughout their stays . Even our dog was pampered with the highest level of attention being given a plush monogrammed day bed , and stunning porcelain doggie bowls for food and water all nicely laid out by a butler on a rubber mat also branded with the Carlyle’s signature coat of arms . I would only be so lucky to return here and will for sure book The Carlyle as my absolute top and only choice amongst the plethora of New York City luxury hôtels . I cant wait to celebrate my next milestone occasion here. I hope to be welcomed again by Stephanie and Diana at the front desk who kicked off our stay on the most positive note thanks to their warm smiles and infectious personalities ❤️ They really know how to make guests feel special and really seem to enjoy their jobs giving it their all .
