Our 3rd visit to New York but the first time in the Civilian Hotel.
The room we had was small and cosy not a lot of hanging space but quite adequate for our needs.
The Bathroom was very large with a very good shower.
Staff are very polite and efficient we found the free coffee in the mornings a big plus👍
The Bar and Restaurant are run independently and are Very expensive we found drinks were half the price in town.
All in all a great stay.

Pros: modern high tech amenities, comfortable mattress, beautiful decor, great use of space in the rooms (e.g., spot to slide in your bag under the bed which is lighted using a motion light), nice showerhead, and I love hotel rooms that do not have any carpet. It feels so clean.

Most of the employees were very friendly. The hotel has a young, hip vibe. The “cozy“ rooms have about the same space as a hotel like CitizenM but much more comfortable and high-quality. I liked the power shades on the windows. There is a shade that lets in light and also a blackout shade, although it does still let some light in around the edges at night.

Another neat feature is the motion light under the bed. It comes on automatically if you need to get up in the middle of the night then goes back off quickly. The Internet was very reliable for me to be able to work from the room.

Cons: there are a few things about the room that could be improved. There is only a very short rod to hang clothes (maybe 3 thin things can fit). The space is also very short in height to where you cannot hang pants without folding them and cannot hang a dress. There is no other place to put a hanger except on the edges of the mirror. There really needs to be another valet rod somewhere. Another problem is that the bathroom door slides across the hanging space. Once you hang clothes and the hangers tilt a little bit, the door bumps the hangers.

Another problem with the “cozy queen“ bathroom is that the partition on the shower is not adequately wide to keep water from spilling all over the bathroom. I have this type of shower at home so am very familiar with the tips and tricks to keep the water in the shower, but this one is just not functional. They could have also remedied this by putting a drain in the regular bathroom part, similar to what you see in Italy, so spilled water drains out. However, there is no drain in the main bathroom part.

While the mattress is very comfortable, the pillows did not work for me. I am a back sleeper and like a flatter pillow. These pillows were too puffy and hard for me to use. I would recommend that they start offering a pillow variety—2 as is and 2 flatter pillows. Also, the bed is just on a platform and the mattress slips away from the headboard so you have to keep pushing it back into place.

I highly recommend grabbing coffee one block over at Frisson. The espresso is excellent and latte art there were amazing!

I loved the hotel and would definitely stay there again. The second floor lounge is beautiful and has a little outside area. I look forward to visiting again when the rooftop is open.

Arrived way before check in just to drop off luggage to explore the city. The front desk personnel were actually able to get us in a room(4th Floor), so that was an unexpected surprise! The room is small, but was located facing the back of the property which made it quiet during our stay. You have to request towels and they only clean the room for a fee via request(there is no door to the shower, so will need to replenish them each day to wipe the water off the floor of the rest of the bathroom). There is a restaurant on the bottom floor and a "club" on the top. The hotel is walking distance to Hell's Kitchen, Times Square, Central Park and the blue line train if you want to visit the 9-11 memorial. If there are any drawbacks, the room is very small so the bathroom area is a couple of feet from the foot of the bed. The glass is hazy but you can still see the silhouette of the person using it. One of us would actually leave the room to provide privacy in case "duty" called. Also, late at night there were a bunch of people trying to use the elevators to get to the bar area on the top floor, which made the wait very long to get back to your room. Overall, we were very satisfied with our stay (especially the customer service from the employees) and would recommend staying at this hotel

The location is primo, and the place is eclectic and fashionable inside. The staff is generally great, though Jesus in particular stands out. He helped us manifold times, and was warm. He made my wife and I feel right at home on our brief business trip. Darwin was wonderful too, but Jesus deserves a huge raise.

FYI, the large King room has water from the shower that goes all the way to the toilet and sink. They give you a squeegee to clean up the mess (which means they know it's foul, though I'm sure some people like it) but I didn't want to be working during my already extremely busy time (plus I find the fact that the bath water doesn't stay in the shower, but instead goes EVERYWHERE in the bathroom is disgusting (to me! personally)). We downgraded to a Queen room for this very reason and simply lost the the money that was paid for the King.

The manager gave us free "breakfast" though unfortunately the breakfast isn't truly a breakfast. There's not even scrambled eggs nor bacon. Instead, there's muffins, orange juice, and some yogurt with coffee / tea. It's more like a continental breakfast that was a minor amount of torture to eat, so we ignored it the rest of the days. Other than that, the hotel is great.

I have stayed in New York many times over the years and know the City pretty well. For this visit I booked into the Civilian Hotel as from the photos it looked like a nice 'hip' boutique hotel... Which it is. However what the photo's didn't convey was just how 'cozy' the rooms are. They really are tiny and frankly too small for a couple staying for more than a night or two. We stayed for four nights and found the room cramped and impractical. There is nowhere to hang any clothes, you have to live out of one small drawer and your suitcase which has to go under the bed. The bed takes up the width of the room and so you have to climb over your partner to get in and out of bed... It really was not ideal. The positives though where that we were on the 24th Floor (Room 2402) and the view of the city was great. The bathroom was also very nice (almost as big as the room itself) and everything was provided. There is a TV in the room and a full length mirror but no desk or dressing table. There is a 'nightclub' on the top floor and we did hear noise from this over the weekend... It did not overly bother us but I imagine it would some people. We did not have breakfast at the hotel (US$30 per person) but there is free coffee in the restaurant for guests from 7am to 10am daily. The other frustrating thing at the hotel was that the elevators were very slow and when there was events on in the nightclub one of the elevators was 'out of use' except for those going up to the rooftop bar. The staff seemed friendly and helpful, although my wife left an item in our room on check-out and after a call, a SMS and an email I have still not had a conclusive answer as to whether the item was found by housekeeping. You can leave your luggage at the hotel after your 11am check-out if you have a flight later in the day. In summary it is a nice hotel in a great location however in my mine the 'Cozy Queen' rooms are only suitable for a solo traveller or a couple staying just one or two nights. We paid US$950 for our 4 night room only stay.

We feel so fortunate we came across the Civilian while looking for a place to stay. I can’t imagine staying anywhere else when visiting midtown. We saw a couple shows and were able to easily and safely walk back to the hotel in under 10 minutes. Location is ideal.

The hotel design is hip — beautiful brick and lighting in lobby, gorgeous 2nd floor lounge with balcony, and large King room that was very clean and cool. Absolutely loved the look of the our bathroom too. Wet room style was a bit odd (whole bathroom gets wet when shower is used) but its quirkiness just added to the experience. Well placed plugs on both sides of bed, hangers, pegs by door. Very nicely planned for a guest’s every need.

However, the best part of this hotel is the staff: young, friendly, and responsive. Everyone we interacted with was relaxed but professional. We felt welcome and cared for the whole time. No stuffiness and yet still first rate service and style.

I would recommend Civilian to anyone. Can’t imagine finding a place I’d enjoy more in NYC!

I stayed in CIVILIAN when it had just opened. This hotel is so different than any other in the neighborhood, with hints to the theaters in such a tasteful way. There was enough space in my room (a spacious queen) to put all my stuff, a good mattress, intimate lighting, plenty of usb ports… I immediately felt at home. The shower was great, they have Public Goods bath products which smell heavenly. Another very convenient thing: you get a water carafe which you can fill at a water dispenser in the corridor. And the window shades go down motorized, during the day you can choose solar and at night blackout. I definitely want to come back next summer to when the rooftop bar will be open!

Planned a weekend Staycation for our 24th Anniversary and glad we found the Civillian Hotel. The mobile pre check in was handy and made for a smooth check in as the front desk greeted us with Champagne and cordially wish my wife and I a "Happy Anniversary". The 2nd floor lounge had a great vibe and we were super close to our Broadway play location just 2 blocks away. While the rooms were small, we found them very efficient for our purpose and we loved the fact that when we returned to wind down that evening we were easily able to "Cast" The Season Finale of the Ozarks!!! from my device. Overall Fantastic Stay and we will definitely be back!!!!

I stayed here Christmas week of 2021. I’m an NYC resident who was isolating away from roommates who got COVID. I stayed with my dog and was in the King ADA room.

The King ADA room was perfect because it offered enough space inside the room for my dog to play on the floor. Another roommate of mine stayed in the regular size room, which I visited, and it was very cozy. My dog would not have had any room to play and we both would have had a tougher time. The regular room is sufficient for a solo traveler or a couple who would not be spending much time in the room. If you want an EXCELLENT midtown Time Square location for a hotel, the Civilian is perfect as it is enough space for you to store your luggage, shower, and sleep. If you want a bit more space and don’t want to feel a bit cramped, then upgrade to the King ADA room.

Hotel provided dog bowls to use, a nice bonus!

The staff was super friendly, professional, and always available. Thanks again to all, and especially Michael!

Hotel bar was only open my first night there (temporarily closed thereafter due to COVID), but it was fantastic! I love all the Broadway show decor.

Other things I want to mention (it’s the little details that are great perks): 1) Hallway had a water bottle refill station, which I used a lot; 2) hotel entrance has hand-senor activated doors. Super helpful when you don’t want to touch common surfaces and when you have luggage and a dog!; 3) I did not do the breakfast add-on but I saw someone else’s and it looked amazing; 4) the TV had built-in google chrome cast so I was able to stream my Netflix and Disney+ and Hulu apps to the TV.

My only complaint is that I did not have access to an ice machine (but they brought me ice when I asked for it, so not a big deal).

I came to NYC for a work trip and have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the Civilian hotel which is not get a 5-star rating because all of their amentiies were not open yet but here is what I can tell you.

1. From my experience from the bellman, front desk agent even to I believe his name is Seth from the continential breakfast, everyone WAS LOVELY and given some of the other reviews I wasn't sure but seriously, every single person I interacted with was upbeat, helpful (they gave some delcious food reccomendations).

2. I am a neat freak, like people come to my husband and I's home in DC and say they can eat off the floor and well I loved the fact the hotel had a fresh smell immediately upon entry and my room was spotless.

So the obvious question is what would I want someone to know well here are a few tiny things:

1. I think if you are like me and you came for a work trip, I want you to know that none of the floor plans in the hotel (I think this is accurate) have desk which means this is definitely a visit NYC and enjoy hotel but not a work in your room hotel.

2. I use to live in NYC and here's the deal rooms are small everywhere but I will say if and when I come back to this hotel, I would get the largest room possible because while they do a great job with the space, I would have preferred more space.

3. I saw on the reviews that they charge extra for things and I guess I am use to that BUT I will say this again my room was SOOO CLEAN and it only cost $20 for them to do that (not excluding the tip I left for the houskeeper) so I think it was worth it.

Just out of sheer curiosity about the food outlets, I would come back and as for the reviews about lack of helpfulness, I am going to say if you treat people kindly, it comes back to you.

Thank you to the entire team there.

I really like the civilian, but I thought that the room was better for one person. There are hooks for a few clothes, but no way to unpack even a carry-on. There is also no room next to the window for someone to get out of bed on that side in the middle of the night, the bathroom is also quite small and has limited areas for toiletries. That said it’s a very up-to-date modern room and I totally enjoyed staying there as a single person I asked for an upgrade to a large double/queen room, but they didn’t have any. Even though it’s more expensive that room might be more appropriate for two people.
