The Sofitel New York garners praise for its cleanliness and stellar location, a stone's throw from NYC hotspots yet comfortably removed from the hustle. While guests appreciate the professional service and the hotel's festive atmosphere, there's a sense that the rooms could benefit from modern updates and additional conveniences.
The value proposition is a point of contention for many visitors who expect more amenities and services for their dollar. Mixed feelings emerge about the hotel's amenities, with some highlighting the need for basic in-room features.

I’ve stayed at Sofitel New York City three times, and each visit has been exceptional. The beds are incredibly comfortable, ensuring a restful stay. The rooms are well-appointed, and the staff is consistently friendly and accommodating, going out of their way to make you feel welcome. The on-site restaurant and bar is excellent, offering great dining options. The hotel’s location is unbeatable—just a short walk to Times Square and Fifth Avenue for shopping, making it the perfect base for exploring the whole city.
I brought my family here to enjoy New York City for Christmas and Christina was so helpful in booking it a few months in advance. She suggested the perfect room which included a king suite and connecting queen room. The set up was perfect for us and we were welcomed with cookies and fruit and a lovely little Christmas tree. There were Nespresso machines in the rooms and the mini-bars were well stocked.
The turndown attendant very thoughtful of making sure our rooms were tidied up a bit and of course, brought chocolate every night. And, she even left the Bose stereo on Christmas music. That was such a nice touch when returning to the room after an exhausting day.
The concierge, Mark, and the porters made the stay even more convenient by making recommendations as well as arranging a ride or hailing a cab for us.
I highly recommend! Can’t wait to go back!

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveler reviews.
I spent a long weekend (5 nights) at the Sofitel in New York City. I originally spent four nights here and had to extend my stay by a day because of a major snowstorm that was hitting where I live. Kudos to the staff for letting me stay in my room despite me buying the smallest room for that one night addition.
I stayed in a one bedroom suite. The room is very large for NYC standards, and even for similar junior suites. The TV in the living room is appropriately sized, but the TV in the bedroom is either too small, or far away. More or less, it’s both. The bathroom has a separate shower and bathtub. Finally, the walk-in closet between the bedroom, bathroom and foyer was very spacious. It has more than enough space for a family of four to sleep there if needed. The bed was very comfortable and the minibar fridge had enough empty space for me to add my own drinks as well.
The biggest asset about the Sofitel in NY is that it is in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, just a block from Times Square. However, it is also conveniently located on 44th St between 5th and 6th avenues where you won’t be overwhelmed by the lights of Times Square and possibly the noise. This location allows you to be able to walk to all of the major attractions in Midtown and you are also a hop and a skip away from the subway stations that will take you anywhere within Manhattan and most of the other boroughs (you can’t go to Staten Island on the subway from Manhattan).
The drawbacks of the Sofitel are two things: first, it is looking dated. There is a major refresh happening this year, so it will be interesting to see how much stays will cost when this is finished. Finally, for Americans, Sofitel is part of Accor, the biggest hotel conglomerate in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. There aren’t many Accor hotels in the USA besides other Sofitels and Fairmonts in very big cities. I have Accor Live Limitless status and the ALL PLUS Voyageur Card and do go abroad annually, so this is not a problem for me. After all, I will make a lot of progress toward improving my status. But I wanted to put that out there, esp. If you are American and aren’t familiar with Accor.
Overall, I recommend that you visit the Sofitel in NYC. It is an upscale hotel that is often reasonably priced, especially if you have Accor Live Limitless because you can get up to triple reward points for your visits if you take advantage of the right promotions.

I hesitated a lot before confirming my reservation given the many negative reviews, but we did not regret our choice. Let's start with the negative points, often mentioned: - “the rooms are old-fashioned or even outdated”: certainly the decoration could be refreshed, it would thus resemble that of all the rooms of the hotel chains, that is to say without charm or soul. There, the art deco spirit is pleasant and embellished with several paintings and photos of NYC and Paris. - “no water, no coffee maker”: warned by the reviews, I asked for them before arriving, and everything was ready in each of the 2 rooms, and the water was changed every day without having to ask. Indeed, that’s the least you can do in a Sofitel. - “The minibar is empty”: it’s true. And that’s good: what’s the point of being burdened by overpriced drinks or a 25dr jar of peanuts for $9 excluding tax? We were able to store our bottles of champagne and other pastries there in a cool place…frankly, it’s much better - “the bar and restaurant close at 9:30 p.m.”: this is true and in fact it does not contribute to the atmosphere of the hotel. It is high time that management provided a clear and official explanation on the hotel website, as the front desk is not informed or empowered to justify. In principle, however, we cannot say that this spoils the stay, because the surrounding area (Times Square) is more than abundant… - Breakfast is expensive: it's true, for $30 excluding TIP of course, 2 mini baguettes + a pastry (as good as in France) often topped off + butter and jams + juice + hot drink, that's what which is a bit expensive. What is missing most is a buffet like in other Sofitels.
The negative points therefore do not constitute a real problem, while the positive wins out:
- the all-marble bathroom offers both a shower cabin and a bathtub. It's rare. - The rooms are spacious, which is notable for NYC and the main realistic criterion given the price per m² in Manhattan (worse than in Paris) - The location is ideal, right next to Times Square, without being bothered by noise because it is secluded - Many of the staff are French-speaking, they are all friendly and helpful. Conclusion: it is certainly not the most beautiful Sofitel, but it does not deserve the excessive indignity and the trials that many opinions give it. I would stay there again with pleasure and without hesitation.

It puts the international Sofitel brand to shame. Having been to other hotels in this chain in other countries I had high expectations of this place. However, the hotel is old, dirty, lacks maintenance to all facilities, the rooms are small and uncomfortable. I think I would have been better off in a Holiday Inn than in this hotel. Their staff is rude and inattentive, they do not give even bottled water in the room and all their bath products (soap and shampoo) have them embedded in the walls and do not change them daily or fill them. Lousy experience and also charge $150 insurance per night in addition to what was already paid which impacts as this frees you up to days after your departure. Check in is very late and check out requires it very early. If you can avoid this place as around there are several other options much cheaper and offering better service

The Sofitel is in a great location in easy walking distance to Broadway theaters, but on a less congested street. I found the lobby slightly confusing since the check-in desk is located far from the front door, but that was easy to solve. My room was relatively spacious for NYC, although the Paris-inspired decor is a bit on the dark side. I wish that there had been (1) a working refrigerator (an abandoned one was hidden behind a cabinet) and (2) ice available on my floor. A full ice bucket was delivered by room service upon request. I visited the restaurant only for after-hours drinks with a group of friends, and the service was prompt and gracious.

I literally have never had better customer service on July 31st. I think this is my first Trip Advisor review but I HAD to write about my experience. The iron in the room stained my white dress so I ran downstairs to see if they had any stain remover. They did not. They offered to send it out for dry cleaning but I needed it at 7AM and literally had nothing else for my meeting in the morning. (Mind you this was at (9:45PM). The manager ran around for 20 minutes looking for clorox pens & wipes & the gentleman at the front desk called around to employees. One of the employees heard what was going on and so they took it to the chef who helped them use vinager and baking soda and the 3 of them got it out. They literally did everything they could to help me. I cannot tell you how appreciative I am of Tania & Bijan. I will never forget their kindness and send everyone I know to this hotel because of it. There are not many people out there who would take the time to help someone especially in a busy busy city.

We have been to New York more than ten times over 17 years, and have stayed at the Sofitel eight of those times. We like that it’s a sophisticated and nice hotel, with a great location that is close to Times Square, but is removed enough to feel fairly quiet. Over the years, the quality of the hotel has slowly but surely gone down, and it is in need of a refresh. However, understanding that Covid was hard on the hotel industry, I try not to be overly judgemental on this point. Good service goes a long way as well, and we have found that at the Sofitel in the past. On this particular trip though, the age of the hotel is showing in unacceptable ways. When we got to our room, we realized that the hotel room door didn’t close properly (you had to push hard to close it, which felt unsafe), and the bathroom doors didn’t close properly either. We went to the front desk to ask if they had a similar double room without these issues. The gentleman was a bit cold, but said that he would make a note to have our suitcases moved to a new room the following early afternoon after housecleaning. I said that this was fine. The next morning, before we started our day, we stopped at the front desk to let them know our suitcases were packed and ready to go, and to confirm this room switch was still happening. A different gentleman was there, and basically scolded us for not trusting that this was in the notes and would be done. We later returned from a full day of sightseeing and shopping around 4:30 PM. We approached the front desk, and were told that no, the move to the new room had not been done. What? After the attitude we received? We then had to wait for them to locate our luggage (it was no longer in our original room), and move it to a new room. In the meantime, we had no access to our things, and had an early dinner reservation that we had to change for, and then rush to, as we were going to see a Broadway show after dinner. We were left with negative feelings, which could’ve been avoided had the doors been properly maintained, and if the staff had provided more courteous, and solicitous service. I also might’ve been more accepting of our experience if the room rates were in line with the declining state of the hotel, but that is not the case. I think that unfortunately may have been our last stay at the Sofitel.

Bonjour, your detailed feedback is immensely appreciated. We are genuinely sorry that you experienced a few challenges with your room doors during this visit. Actions are being taken to prevent such incidents in the future. We also regret any perceived curt behavior from our front desk colleagues. They are known for their courteous manner, so we feel genuinely sorry to hear about your experience. We acknowledge your thoughts on our hotel's appearance. We assure you that we are in an ongoing process to enhance our overall guest experiences. It's delightful to know you've chosen us repeatedly for your New York visits due to our prime location and sophisticated atmosphere. It's disappointing to hear that, after this visit, you're considering other accommodations. With our Gaby Brasserie now open daily for breakfast and the bar section serving dinner each evening, we believe we can offer improved services during future visits. Thank you for expressing interest in city attractions like sightseeing and shopping. Next time, do engage our concierge for exclusive recommendations. It's been a pleasure to accommodate you over the years and we would much appreciate another opportunity to serve you and regain your trust. Merci beaucoup for your feedback and we certainly hope to see you back soon. A bientôt!

We booked the Sofitel expecting the level of class, service and amenities of other Sofitel properties we have stayed at and were terribly disappointed by this tired hotel. From the online photos you may expect some old New York style grandeur but the rooms are bland, outdated and frankly feel dumpy. The lighting is dull and there are none of the amenities one would expect here.
We had a pre- theater meal at Gaby, onsite restaurant, and while the staff was just wonderful, the food was mediocre- and this was during restaurant week when you would expect it to be fantastic.
The most redeeming quality of this hotel is the location. It’s really superb. It’s on a quiet stretch of 44th St at 6th Ave. 5 min walk to the theaters, near Times Square but away from the chaos of it and close to Bryant Park.
It was a fine but disappointing stay.

Excellent hotel with incredible charm and this “Parisian” art deco atmosphere; I was a little worried about the reviews, but it didn't happen. It is excellently located a stone's throw from Times Square, Bryant Park, 5th avenue; the bus even goes through the side street to lower Manhattan, the Bryant Park subway station is at the end of the street. The room on the 19th floor overlooked the backyard, providing absolute calm in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. It was spacious and very comfortable; the bedding is too good; the spacious bathroom (shower + “small” bathtub). Impeccable housekeeping. Professional welcome and often in French, very kind maid, efficient porters and doormen. We loved the Gaby brasserie, the refined dishes, even at breakfast, the sumptuous decoration, the quality welcome. There are plenty of restaurants and shops around, and the Bryant Park Christmas market with its ice rink is so cool. Accor hotel with TV channels in French. A small downside, if the wifi internet access is free, it constantly disconnects, but that is not the main thing. I highly recommend.
