A pleasant surprise. Stayed here over 40 years ago and expected an outdated hotel. Not at all. Staff was very welcoming with an early check in. Restaurants nearby, easy access to cable car. About 15-20 minute walk to BART Civic Center station or possibly quicker on MUNI. Room clean and roomy with a great view. Area not as busy as other parts of town I’ve stayed in, fewer homeless as well. Will definitely stay here again.
What a great deal. This hotel is very reasonably priced, it well located for easy access to many SF highlights and most importantly, the views from the hotel are impressive. We slept with the curtains open from our 21st floor room so that we could wake up to sunrise over the water. Wow, impressive. We found the rates to be reasonable, the staff to be friendly (in general) and the location is great. There is a Whole Foods two blocks away and the best donuts west of the Mississippi are also two blocks away (and open 24 hours).
We were there over the weekend for a music fest and wanted something centrally located. This was a perfect spot. Quiet rooms, well mannered staff and the breakfast we purchased in the mornings was good as well. Restaurants, convenient store, bars and drugstores surround the hotel within a 10 min walk. They have a pool and gym on 6th floor if you like those accommodations but we didn't use either since we would leave early and come back late every day. Don't forget your magnetic key, you need it for elevator, lobby restroom and sliding doors if returning late.
Very inconsistent property which yields for a very mixed review. The Porte-cochère, lobby, front desk, restaurant areas are kind of updated, clean and reasonably spacious. After you check in and move into the garage (that is a plus for this property), you feel alright about your selection. Garage feels decently clean, safe and with decent lighting. Then the inconsistency shows up its ugly head. The garage access doors through two fire doors is very tight and poorly illuminated. At this point you think you made a terrible choice... just to be surprised by a half floor flight of stairs and if you made the mistake of waiting to unload the car until you parked and unloaded your staff into a cart... think again. Once you get through that, you are able to breath again as the elevator areas is ok. That will be the first time you get across what might be the worst first impression of this property. The hallway carpet reminds you of a 1960's Las Vegas Back of The Strip hotel. Dirty more than anything else. I wasn't expecting high ceilings, spacious hallways and resort architectural scale as the building screams 1970-1980 from the exterior. Hallways are low ceilings and bit tighter than I would like. By now you've been through the worst and you arrive at your room. Carpet remains untrustworthy but at least the room was given a "lipstick on a pig" kind of make over and it didn't feel dirty. Furnishings are alright and bathroom has the bare minimum to remove itself from the 90's. Most importantly, decent beds and clean sheets. Another issue I found while spending the weekend there was that I was awoke at 06:28 am by someone vigorously cleaning a bucket for about 15 minutes on a utility room right next door to our room. I am sure the bucket did not make it alive from that interaction! Whoever was doing it, was deliberately thinking: "If I am up and working on a Saturday so should everyone else!!!" I tried to keep my cool as that person clearly wasn't thinking about what would everyone else in this floor would be doing at that hour and just carrying on with his day but the same thing repeated Sunday morning as well! Since people are creature of habit, do not plan to sleep in if you are staying at the 9th floor. On the plus side the property has a on-site garage at the extra cost of $40 a night and be careful with hotels that advertise "Parking Available". A lot of them mean down the street at a some parking lot for fees that can go upwards of $75 a night. A lot like the breakfast In a pinch I would consider staying here again. Last note: Contrary to the majority of Holiday Inn Express brand this location does not include a continental breakfast.…
Looks like they are happy with their airline deals and they don't care too much about other guests. Since we arrived late, from beginning they yelled on us: "Why you did not call me you are coming?" and let us wait for 20-25 minutes to arrange room. What a welcome? And yes, it's 'lipstick on the pig' hotel. The only good thing is decent bed for the night.
