Front desk worker did not care at all that I found blood on my sheets. He would not refund my money after such a disgusting experience. The entire building smelled so bad.... it smelled like curry and expired fruit.

I've traveled over 20 year during my working career. This is by far the worst hotel I've almost stayed at. I was traveling with a female companion on this trip to S.F. This hotel has to be the best photo shopper in the world. Couple of items they fail to disclose.
1. Extremely dirty rooms
2. It's a hostel. If you don't know what this is, it's one shower per floor. So the female companion who was traveling with me instantly felt scared to stay at the Utah Inn.
I paid the one nights "no show" fee and checked into another hotel. Please be careful when you book this place.

My experience of this dump will haunt me for the rest of my life. I arrived from England from a 12 hour flight, exhausted and hungry. It's my first time in SF but I didnt feel good about how the area where the hotel is looked whilst in the cab. I didnt care though I was so so tired and just needed to sleep. Arriving at the hotel door I discovered some woman sat on the floor next to it, smoking away. Again, whatever - wasnt expecting the Ritz for what I paid. After being buzzed in, my hopefulness was starting to wane. Immediately I was hit with an overwhelming pungent smell - like urine-y and musty. The place looked like it was going crumble any minute. The carpets were stained and disgusting and to top it all off, the lighting was an off-putting yellow with a green tinge. The stuff of horror films. I checked in and entered my room and, after looking around, I burst out crying. I was exhausted in a strange city late at night and just didnt feel safe or comfortable. The room was freezing with no option for heat. The sink only trickled water out so couldnt wash my hands and face properly. I checked out the shared bathroom and there was no way I was going to use it.
Back in my room, I told myself its just 2 nights - after that I would be meeting my boyfriend somewhere more upmarket and central. I got in to bed and tried to ignore the drilling outside when I felt something crawling on me - I jumped out of bed and turned on the light and - my worst fear realised - there were multiple bed bugs crawling around. Again, I was so distressed I cried again. I had no other options but to stay here the night. My boyfriend was in a place with no wifi so couldn't contact him until the following day when he would get me a nicer hotel and by this time it was like midnight. I had to sleep ok the cold wood floor with nothing but a towel on top of me and lay there crying. I checked what time sunrise was (6:45) and basically lay there on the floor for 6 hours with a pounding headache from being dehydrated. I was too scared to leave my room incase I encountered anyone dodgy and there was no way I was entering the street. So after pretty much traveling all day from England I hadnt slept, eaten a hot meal or showered for 30 hours. I felt like an animal. I was freezing on that floor.
Somehow I managed to survive the night and left the Hell hole at first light, leaving the key at the dodgy reception. My boyfriend finally got all my messages and immediately booked me into the Westin in Union Sq where I am writing this from, from a nice cosy clean bed in a lovely safe part of town.
I dont have a lot of money and know lots of people don't either but save for a little longer and spend more comfort, convenience and peace of mind. Its just not worth it. This is a big life lesson learnt. I dont know how this hotel are able to operate under these conditions. I remember lying there thinking that I wouldnt wish this on my worst enemy. You couldnt pay me me to stay there again. I am well and truly traumatised.

The hotel is very bad, please choose another one. You need to share the toilets with others 7 rooms. The hotel is very noise, the reception same times is closed so you need to call to a guy to make the checkout. The smell is horrible and don't have elevator so you need to carry your own luggage to the stairs. It's to expensive for the quality that they offer

I was supposed to stay in the Utah Inn in June, 2016. I arrived there with my SO a bit before midnight. We were greeted by two shady guys smoking outside. They hardly said anything and took us inside to a small window that cannot be described as reception. They weren't very professional, but it was late and we had already booked our stay online. One of the men took my credit card and charged the room price without really talking much. We carried our luggage ourselves up three flights of stairs to our room, which included a bed, two nightstands and a dirty sink. On the way we encountered a phazed out granny wandering through the hallway to the only restroom on the floor.
The place smelled really stuffy and disgusting, but we were tired and wanted to sleep. We entered our room and tried to turn on lights, which didn't work. One of the nightstand lamps luckily worked. Before settling down in the tiny room, I decided to check the mattress, and lo and behold, there were three or four bed bugs running around on the pillow only. I don't even want to know how many of those I would've seen had I looked any further. I immediately took photos of them for evidence, rushed downstairs and asked for my money back. The two guys pretended to not know what we were talking about, but after explaining they told us they'd refund me without a problem. They didn't even want to see proof - apparently they are more than aware of the bed bug problem! And they still charge more than 80 dollars per night.
Anyway, this Inn left me and my SO without a place to stay at midnight in San Francisco, which was quite a nightmare. It would've even more nightmarish if we had stayed in this bug infested, moldy shack.
They also sent us a nasty surprise a couple of days later demanding a 70 dollar fee for a "no-show", which was not what happened in reality. This was fortunately solved by Booking.com.
All in all, I cannot recommend this place for anyone.

When I first encountered this property back in 1991 I looked up at the edifice in awe with its large lettering and facade, and certainly imagined it had more than the supposed 14 rooms!!! I was taken aback - the layout was strange - long hallway with the rooms directly off of it - no elevator and luggage to haul, extremely old and thin windows as well as rather bizarre occupants you could meet near the quirky 1908 "shared bathrooms" - with the whole floor !!! Wasn't really ready for it - it did have and still does have what I'll call a "Hippy Trippy" feel - like an old psychedelic crash pad must have been like in the 60's - WITHOUT the beaded curtains and incense!! Yet, the place does smell like it could use a few gallons of Febreeze - as if the walls contain unpleasant "aromas" of daze gone by. Can't say there are any amenities - because there AREN'T ANY - (they hadn't invented them back in 1908 so why put 'em in now??) Plus there is the historic old bar downstairs, but with little in the way of sound prevention good luck on a night when there is music, sirens, busses - et al - EVERY night?? All this for an area that used to be an absolute skid row but has become "SOMA-tized" to a degree - yet The Establishment is still far enough away from any real "hip happenings" as to be dicey - proceed with caution! No security here and never was! You certainly don't have to STAY here to patronize the music venue - and for the crazed amount of money they want for the "extras" such as in-room sink (no bathroom save for down the hall - MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS?!? You can do better for the outrageous price and feel safer! DO SO!!

This hotel was horrible! It's easy to get used to the hostel environment (shared bathrooms). That wasn't the problem. The problem was the sticky walls, black fingerprints on every door frame, unkind staff who seemed inconvenienced by any request, and so much more. Every time we went to the front desk, the clerk was outside smoking. The halls smell of curry and cigarette smoke. The room had two small towels, I wanted an extra one for the floor and one for my hair. The clerk said they had not extra towels, finally found one for me, and the next day said they would not give us clean towels until we turned in the dirty ones. At the end of the trip, before we checked out, the housekeeping guy came to gather our dirty towels again. There were some folded hand towels that he saw in the room. I tried to hand him those. He asked, "Clean or dirty?" I said, "I don't know." He said, "Then they are clean." and would not collect them.
Granted, the floors and bathrooms were actually very clean. The bed was reasonably comfortable. But there was a weird vibe in the hotel and this is not a place I would recommend for anyone. Ever.
It's also far away from everything and in kind of a shady part of the city.

I've been here long time ago.
Stayed few days, and definitely never planning to go back.
Bunch of crazy ppl live there, I remember an old fat dude knocked on my door 4am complaining for a noise, while I have no clue who was making the noise.
Next day I got a letter from the management saying that I should pack my things and leave.
Poor management, poor customer service,

Don't do it to yourself it was the worst place i have ever stayed. The rooms are filthy, shared bathrooms with the whole floor you are staying on. We were wished 'good luck' to other guests in the hotel while we were checking in... I wore shoes when I was in the shower. A morning when I was leaving the hotel the cops were in the hotel and had the hotel surrounded over an incident that occurred involving the receptionist..

Don't do it. Its disgusting. I am just in the process of writing a review. It's dirty and my bed was full of bed bugs - I had to sleep on the floor with a towel. Really shady area at night, drilling going on from dusk til dawn. And its absolutely freezing. Spend a little more. I wish I would have read reviews before booking.
