The Garden Studio in Lanikai is perfect for couples! The studio is in the small and quiet ocean front “village” of Lanikai, and is very private and perfectly-decorated for a romantic getaway. No one walks past the cottage or can see past the lush tropical flowers and privacy fence, so you can leave the blinds and windows completely open to enjoy the tropical breeze, see the tropical plants, and hear the birds singing in the morning.
The decorations are perfect for Hawaii: you feel like you’re living in a local’s cottage, with many shells, paintings, books, and photographs from around Lanikai which creates a very warm and personal environment. There’s even a small hula dancer statue on the kitchen table. We love lounging in the private yard under the garden umbrella.
We enjoy Rick & Nina’s property so much that we stay here every time we visit Oahu! The amenities, especially beach chairs, beach towels, and beach umbrella make our days at the beach much more enjoyable, plus we don’t have to pack as much in our bag or buy beach gear for our visits.
Rick and Nina are the perfect hosts: you have complete privacy, yet they are readily available by phone. There is a large book full of information about the property, places to eat, and things to do.
This side of Oahu is gorgeous and quiet. When you sit on the beach, you have a picture-perfect view of the Mokulua islets (seabird sanctuaries), the turquoise water, palm trees, occasional sand crabs and kayakers. Best of all, you have an unobstructed view of the lushness of Oahu (without high-rise buildings).
Honestly, this place is worth every penny we spend.

My husband and I were looking for a quiet little place to celebrate our 2nd anniversary and I stumbled across Lanikai Bed & Breakfast on the internet. The room was very clean, the garden out back was extremely relaxing. We're looking forward to going back again. For $125 a night, we felt that we got an excellent deal and were able to see Hawaii for what it really is.

We stayed in the Garden Studio at the Lanikai B&B from 6/2/09 through 6/7/09. This was our second visit to Oahu together: in 2006, we stayed in Waikiki and loved the powdery-soft beach at Lanikai. I definitely recommend staying at Lanikai rather than Waikiki for a relaxing vacation, and we would recommend this specific B&B. In particular, the garden studio was perfect: it was close to the beach, there was a cool breeze, it was comfortable, the gardens were pretty, the kitchen was well-stocked (to prepare your own meals), and Nini was very, very friendly. Nini and Rick provided backpack-style beach chairs, a cooler, boogie boards, and even a welcome Dole pineapple and muffins. There was even a binder of local restaurant menus which was helpful. We would definitely stay at the garden studio again.

My husband and I looked for a nice romantic place for our honeymoon and decided we wanted to stay in Kailua, because we had read such wonderful things about the beach.

So after much searching we decided to stay at Lanikai B&B and when we got there we were disappointed right away.

I had told the owner we were on our honeymoon and that it was my first time to Hawaii, so I was hoping maybe for a little 'something' to show congrats on getting married or something - but nothing.

The ants were GROSS in this place, we were told this was common on the island, but it's not fun to open up your suitcase in the morning and find ants in your clothes.

The beach access that this B&B is near is more like water access, because there is no sand at the access. You have to walk 10 minutes to get to the 'beach' part.

I would definetly stay in Kailua again, but NOT at this B&B.

Response from HowBoutThat, Owner at Lanikai Beach Rentals LLC
Responded May 11, 2008
I am sorry that your expectations vs. your experience in our garden studio prompted you to post such a degrading review. We have hosted guests since the mid 80’s and many are repeat customers from years past. We are always more than accommodating to a guests special request, although it helpful when they, the guest makes their requests known. The beach across the street is only available at “low tide”, ocean at all other tide periods. The beach access north of us is a five (5) minute walk, not ten (10). If you did in fact stay with us, you were forewarned of this by my self and within our rental agreement which details our beach status. If you truly did stay in our studio, you know exactly what I am referring to. Ants? Yes, occasionally we have ants and so does everyone else in the islands. At times they are more abundant due to the weather. My apologies for this inconvenience. We do have regular, professional pest control treatment and will continue to do so. The process of posting potentially fraudulent reviews of a property without stating who the author is leaves much room for abuse. We have worked very hard for many years to establish ourselves with our business and with the relationships of our many guests who return year after year.

We have been visiting the various Hawaiian islands for over 20 years. Approximately 15 years ago we discovered Lanikai Beach B&B on the windward coast of Oahu and it became our Hawaiian "home". Rick and Nini Maxey are the nicest people you could ever meet. We've watched their 2 college aged daughters grow up into lovely young women and now are enjoying seeing their 7 year old daughter in action. A lovely family always willing and anxious to help make your vacation extra special.

We have stayed in both the Garden Studio and the Tree House. Each has it's own personality and the descriptions and photos on the web site are accurate. In the last couple of years, we find ourselves partial to the Tree House mainly because it's roomier and suits our life style. We love all the windows which allow the tradewinds to blow through.

Rick and Nini continually update and refurbish both units. This year, there are beautiful bamboo hardwood floors in the living room, kitchen, and dining area. Also new is a large flat screen TV on a beautiful table.

Everything provided for your days on the beach and your days and nights in. It is very well appointed with high quality items. It is spotless. A welcome basket of local coffee, muffins and fruits is waiting for you along with juice and creamers in the refrigerator.

You couldn't find a better location - the residential neighborhood of Lanikai and one of the most beautiful beaches just a few minutes walk from your door. Kailua town is a 5 minute car ride and offers all the shopping and restaurants to keep you occupied when not on the beach.

We're counting the months until we return the our Hawaiian home next November!

We have just returned home after staying 10 nights in Oahu. This was our first trip to Hawaii, there were 5 people in our group. We spent 3 nights in Waikiki and had a great time there but were footworn and tired when we arrived at Lanikai Hale Mahina for 5 nights. We arrived to find a charming, comfortable and absolutely spotless home that contained everything we could need for our vacation. Clean, fluffy white towels, beach towels, beach matts, floaty toys, cooler for packing your lunch, a full sized fridge, spacious table for eating or playing games, screens on all the windows that can be left open day and night to allow the trade winds to blow - none of that relentless blowing of an air conditioner but plenty of fans to cool the rooms. Lanikai is a very short drive to Kailua town with all the shopping you need, try Don Quixote for groceries, Safeway, the Thursday evening market has plenty of veggies, fruit, flowers and plate dinners. Day trips to Honolulu and Waikiki are also an easy drive. I would absolutely recommend this accommodation to my family and friends. We also got a peek at the garden studio that is part of this same property, it has a private garden, beautifully decorated, again spotless, and is perfect for 2. Rick and his family were very welcoming, but not obtrusive. This accommodation is a licensed bed and breakfast and is a member in good standing with the Better Business Bureau, with no complaints when I checked before booking. Lanikai beach is beautiful day or night with the moon shining across the water, swimming is warm and safe. Do the hike up Lanikai ridge for the spectacular views. We will definitely be back!

Where do I even start? This was my very first time staying anywhere other than a big named hotel. I found this property on this website. Rick Maxey's website was super attractive, inviting and it turns out to be totally accurate. It was exactly what it said it was going to be. We were super impressed with everything about it. Rick was super to work with. He was interested when our flight came in so he could be there to greet us and show us around. He made sure that we knew where we were going from the airport to the front door. He advised us as to resturants, stores, etc. When we got there it was fast and easy to find. The lights were on for us, the scenic Hawaii channel was on the tube, the music was low and romantic. There was a nice pineapple in the fruit bowl, fresh local coffee on the counter, a great binder of information on the table. (everything you would ever need to know about everythnig on the island) SO NICE TO HAVE. The place was very cozy, romantic, clean and charming. We felt safe and sound there. The place had body boards, beach chairs, and outdoor sand shower, a sweet courtyard with table and chairs, bug spray, candles, etc. This place had everything down to the beach straw hats in the closet! Seriously the cutest place ever. We absolutely loved our stay there! The most beautiful beach in America was right across the street. The sunrise was spectacular. Why else would you get up at 5:30 on your vacation? Trust me, it was amazing! The beaches were amazing. The resturants were amazing. The area was perfect. The locals were awesome, the Maxi's were awesome and the beach hopping was the best ever. I can't say enough about this property folks.....it was SO great. I will be back and will probably bring family and friends and rent both on this property. This was a great value. I like to think that I am an experienced travelor and I think this was one of the best ever. Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Maxi, we can't say thanks enough! See you soon. Cindy & Chris from Iowa City, Iowa.

We stayed in the "Lanikai Garden Studio," which is attached to the owners' home on the first story of the property. Note: The "Lanikai Tree House" is the second story over the owners' home. All three lodgings share a long, wide driveway.

Good:

- After studying prices of other Kailua beds and breakfasts, as well as Waikiki high rises, we felt that prices here were at least inline with the amenities provided and the location.
- A very well-stocked kitchenette helped us prepare simple breakfasts and lunches to keep down costs during our stay.
- The private, hedge-screened back yard was a pleasant spot to enjoy a drink or meal.
- The studio was well-sized and matched photos on their web site. We felt like a local.
- During our September stay, breezes made the studio comfortable for sleeping, given there is no AC.
- The owners met us in the driveway the first morning to chat, give island advice, etc. They are very friendly and Rick - both by phone and in person - goes out of his way to help with logistics, sightseeing, security, etc. Much appreciated, without being intrusive, as other B&B hosts can be.
- While there are certainly mosquitos, ants and other bugs outside, the owners seem to do a good job of keeping them from taking over the studio.
- A bottle of wine, fresh-cut flowers, and a nice note welcomed us for our honeymoon.
- Although you technically can walk across the street to the beach, we found it better to drive down a couple blocks with the provided umbrella, beach chairs and towels and access the much-wider, prettier beach there.
- Kailua is a great, low-key base from which to launch a day trip to the North Shore, as well as to the South to see Makapuu Point, Waikiki, and more. The airport is less than a half hour away. The local beach scene is among the best on the island, so there isn't a need to leave anywhere.

Could be better:

- We're light sleepers, so we were guaranteed early awakenings by birds chirping and geckos jostling in the nearby greenery.
- Although the studio seems very private, with all the windows open, we could hear voices from either or both the main house next door and the "Tree House" lodging, leaving us a bit careful in our own talking and activities.
- The web site for these properties could use an update; the "request" for accommodations should be upgraded to real-time availability checking. We found out a day later by phone that our preferred lodging was offline for repairs.
- Although clean and comfortable, some of the furnishings are starting to look a bit dated, and we found multiple levers for the frosted-glass window blinds to be broken.
- Everywhere on Oahu, and Kailua was no exception, we were repeatedly warned about thieves looking to break into our rental car. We had no such issue, but appreciated the warnings; it did leave us feeling constantly on edge.
- Unique to our stay and not a huge issue, the owners left on a short trip after our first night, leaving their 20-year-old daughter in charge. We were told she was very responsible, but never saw her, even despite multiple calls to the provided number to ask questions.
- The cleaning fee stings a bit for short stays, and housekeeping is not provided free daily.

Overall, a pleasant stay and we're happy to recommend, with the caveats noted above.
