We traveled from PA to Maui with our 4 children ages 4-14 in August 2022. For our Hawaii trip we were spending 5 nights in Maui and then 6 in Oahu. We are use to staying at well established 4 and 5 star resorts. In Oahu we decided to splurge and stay at Aulani. Which meant that in Maui we were trying to cut down on cost’s. Honua Kai had exactly what we were looking for (price wise.) Our 2 bedroom ocean view suite that slept 6 comfortably came in at $775 per night. STEAL for a family of 6, but I’ll have to admit I was skeptical. As a family of 6, we are use to spending $1500 plus per night. Upon arrival you can only check in at the first tower, even if your room is in the other tower. A minor inconvenience. Unfortunately for us, our room was not available (even though it was check in time). Exhausted after traveling from PA, we went to Dukes (there on site restaraunt.) An hour later our room still was t ready. Finally around 6:30pm our room was ready after waiting 2.5 hrs post check in. When we entered our room we were pleasantly surprised! The room was spotlessly clean and spacious, with lots of storage. The view was to DIE for. After seeing what the room had to offer for the price we paid, we quickly overlooked the late check in. The resort does not have a lot of amenities on site. Which shows in the price point. But that is how we like it! It was a slow paced resort and clean! Easy to find pool chairs. Staff was always friendly as well. There is an on site grocery, which is confident. Around the corner from the resort you’ll find a food truck yard. Just as an employee how to get it to. We ended up hanging out there nightly. Some important things to note: -is that there is no daily housekeeping. This was a surprise to us. But again, at the price point…worth overlooking. -There are no lounge chairs provided for the beach. You must bring your own. We just used towels. - the gym is SMALL and the equipment is severely outdated. I used it daily and found ways to get in a good workout by utilizing there assortment of free weights. After also staying at Aulani and paying $2200 a night. My family of 6, unanimously agreed that Honua Kai was the better of the 2 resorts….ironically it was also significantly cheaper ;-) We hope to return next year. This place is a gem.

We booked our room in February for a much anticipated anniversary trip. We booked thru the Honua Kai website. We booked all of our excursions thru Honua Kai concierge (Lauren). All the excursions were great and all went off with out a hitch. Lauren even made dinner reservations for us far in advance. When we arrived on Maui we had a terrible experience at the rental car area. We arrived at the Honua Kai feeling tired, frustrated and just plain grumpy. That changed as soon as we approached the front desk to check in. We were greeted by a lovely young lady named Lile. She had an infectious smile on her face, gave us a warm aloha and promptly got us checked in. Her demeanor was calming and definetly put us right into the aloha spirit. A true profesional that Honua Kai is lucky to have. Our room was clean , well stocked and frankly better than imagined. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained. Dukes restauraunt in on site and has online ordering for pick up which worked great when we did not want to leave the beautiful room. Parking was never a problem. We just used the valet. Shout out to Calvin, Fred and Giselle a few of the hardworking and friendly valet/bell staff. We have been to Maui several times and stayed Westin, Hyatt, etc. and found this to be a better experience. Thanks Honua Kai for making our anniversay special! We will return.

We loved the efficiency studio for the two of us. Very spacious and well appointed (kitchen has the very basics) with a great ocean view. We used the kitchen for breakfast, drinks, and snacks. Definitely has a family vibe with kids around but there is a quiet pool. We booked through Priceline so we’re hotel guests - this included one housekeeping service 1x per week, towels from the towel shack (Vrbo/‘Audi rentals used towel kiosks), and valet parking. Housekeeping is quick to deliver extra hangars, dish/laundry/bath products and fresh towels. Not sure how valet parking works for Vrbo/rental folks but it was included and handy for us when the parking garage was full. There is a food truck park a short walk away and also a Times supermarket. Duke’s is onsite and does pool service but they are busy so plan to be patient and make dinner reservations if you want to go. If you aren’t aware, Duke’s, Leilani’s, and Hula Grille are all affiliated. We didn’t go to Leilani’s but the menus at the other two were similar.

The Honua Kai resort is the worst place on Maui. Save your money and headaches - stay elsewhere! Usually stay at a Westin property and wish we had. There is no parking, terrible pools with limited seating and no views, dirty chairs and broken umbrellas, dirty property with litter throughout, hard to find assistance and when you do they’re rude, good luck getting a room that is updated (broken thermostat, worn towels, broken safe, non-working electrical outlets). Expressed our concerns which no one cared to hear. Rooms are NOT worth the price. So wish we had stayed at a Westin property as we usually do. Thanks for making my elopement miserable - do NOT stay here.

My husband, 1 year old, and I stayed here for a week, and it was an amazing experience! It was a great resort for a family vacation, and I think traveling in early September was great because it was less busy according to staff. We had a 1 bedroom, partial ocean view (which was VERY partial and probably my only thing I'd caution against - wasn't really worth any extra expense since we couldn't really see the ocean without leaning over the balcony). The on-site restaurant, Duke's, is great, and we ate there most mornings and some afternoons. One thing to be aware of, however, is there isn't much in the way of dining options within walking distance. We visited some of the restaurant/pool bars at the Westin properties nearby, but they were just okay. Having a rental car allowed us to explore other nearby dining options luckily. We really enjoyed the pools, which were all family friendly, with the exception of the "quiet pool," which is a nice option for those who want to get a break from the noisiness that can come with kids. We reserved some pool loungers (called "casabella" on the reservation site) one day and a cabana another. We felt the cabana was well worth the price since it provided guaranteed shade throughout the day and room to spread out. Since it wasn't as busy during our stay, we could have found loungers without a reservation, but you had to get out there early or get lucky to find some under umbrellas. Pool service was by Duke's, and we enjoyed the food and drinks quite a bit! The beach was beautiful, but we chose to go a short distance to a place they called "baby beach" where the waves were supposedly calmer. In retrospect, we should have just gone to the beach at the hotel for the convenience factor (beach with a 1 year old is tricky apparently lol). All in all, we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel, especially for families. It felt very luxurious but was more reasonably priced than some other resorts we were looking into. We hope to come back someday!

We stayed at the Luana Garden Villas located in the Honua Kai Resort in May 2022 and we can't wait to go back. The villas were new, beautiful, modern, spacious, clean, equipped with high end appliances, and well stocked. It was ideal for our group of 7, especially with 2 young children. Each building overlooks a pool, so access to the pool was just steps away and it also meant that the pools were never crowded since there are multiple pools. We didn't use the Honua Kai pools but they looked fun. The layout of the units are very functional as well. Each unit comes with a garage and 2 parking spots. They put a lot of thought in to the villas. The beach was a ~5 minute walk. The location was convenient too. Markets, shops, restaurants, and a food truck lot were all within walking distance. And just a short drive to Napili and Kapalua beaches, which are some of the best beaches on Maui IMHO. The beach at the resort is nice but it is rocky (my brother in law cut his foot). I can't comment on the Honua Kai Resort too much because we stayed at our villa most of the time (because we loved it so much) except we arrived at the villas a couple hours before check-in so the Honua Kai resort stored our perishable Costco food in their fridge while we explored the beach until check-in time. Great service! I could go on and on. When we return to Maui, I don't see how we can stay anywhere else.

I picked Honua Kai after tons of research of condos in Kaanapali. Honua Kai won out because they had a restaurant on site and said they offered waitress service by the pool, they also were one of the only condos that had 2 beds in the second bedroom and not just a queen or king bed, lastly, they had a gym on site- which both my teens were happy about. Although these are condos the place does have more of a hotel feel. There are valets at check in and they bring your luggage up for you, something many condos don’t do. The lobby looks and feels like you are in a hotel. There are 2 stores in the lobby and both offer food- smoothies, acai bowls, breakfast items, etc. The on site restaurant is good, although impossible to get a reservation at. There should be some sort of system for people staying there to be able to get a reservation less than 2 months prior. The unit we had was decent.- 2 bedrooms, 2 baths. The second bedroom was insanely small and although there were 2 single beds in the room, the beds were basically touching - my kids were not fans. The bathroom attached to that room was nice and updated. The bathroom attached to the master bathroom was old, the grout was disgusting and dirty and in general it needed a facelift. Overall the unit was fine- not overly luxurious but far nicer than your average condo rental. We had a Mountain View as that was all that was available when we booked and while yes, you can see the mountains, you really see more of the parking lot. Unfortunately, sitting out on the lanai was very noisy, crazy windy and just not enjoyable like I anticipated it would be. The pools at the resort are mobbed. There were chairs haphazardly laying all over and there were hoards of screaming kids at every pool. You could not lay by a pool if you wanted to relax. Luckily I didn’t come to Hawaii for the pools. The beach is right there and although there are no chairs already on the beach for you, the units all come with varying quality beach chairs. The beach directly in front of the hotel is very narrow, but you can walk a few minutes in either direction and get different conditions. We liked other beaches in the area way more, but we did enjoy a couple of mornings right at the condo beach area. Would I stay here again? I probably would want to try something new, but Honua Kai was the only condo I found that checked off all the boxes I was looking for. It is a solid choice in the area.

Our trip to Maui was the most amazing trip. One of the biggest reasons for that is due to the Honua Kai Resort. the pool options made it feel like you were at a different location every day. Having Duke's available to service the pool guests was amazing. The only negative was that we lost out on using our Lanai for two days as they were painting the property and blocked it off for painting. It sat for over 24 hours blocked off without anyone touching it. That could have been organized better. All-in-all it was a really good trip, however.

We stayed in a three bedroom three bathroom condo that was rented through VRBO directly from the owner. The layout for perfect to bring a set of grandparents along. The owners were very responsive to any issues that came up during our stay. Downside in our condo was a window unit in the living room/kitchen area for the AC. We had very minimal interactions with the hotel. The beach directly in front of the hotel is quite rocky but literally three minutes walk towards the black Rock the beach is perfect. Pool was good for our young kids. Only one full service restaurant on site so hard to imagine not having a kitchen/going out for every meal. Would come back here again w family.
