Hotel's Favorite
My wife and I ended up staying on Lanai when we needed to move from Maui/ Lahaina when the wild fires burned down the hotel we were supposed to stay at. Our plan was to ferry over to Lanai, but instead, we flew in and stayed two days. This hotel is excellent and very mellow and low key. It is not trying to be the Four Seasons, so do not expect that. The rooms are a bit small by modern standards, but that is because you are in a historic building that was for the Dole executives to stay in when this was a pineapple plantation. Considering the building has been around from the 1920s or so, it is wonderfully modern. It is very comfortable and friendly. Staff was great. Only two nitpicks - bed was very soft and comfortable but you sink in a bit too much and end up in a rut. i think the memory foam mattress needed to be rotated, kind of like your tires. It is great that you can walk all of Lanai City from here and we did so repeatedly. We also ended up getting a car (not a 4WD) and checked out beaches and the cat sanctuary. This is truly old school Hawaii that is mellow and meant to take your blood pressure down. If you cannot handle that, it is on you, not the hotel. I would love to stay here again.

Cute little hotel in Lāna'i City! From the outside you wouldn't think much of it, but the rooms are nicely renovated and feel very spa like. Lights, temperature and shades are controlled using electronic panels in the room and the toilet was a Toto! Bed was super comfy. Staff was friendly and check in was easy. It's right by the town square and in very short walking distance of the island's stores and restaurants. While not inexpensive it's the island's "budget" alternative to the four seasons. Grounds are meticulously maintained and rooms are very clean.
Why I didn't give this property 5 stars - they need to do better work with sound reduction. The first night the restaurant was closed so I didn't expect noise. I could hear the neighbors talking in their room, when they passed in the hall and it wasn't muffled. You could literally hear word for word. I had to turn my tv on just to muffle what they were watching. The second night the restaurant was open and it was SO LOUD. It sounded like there was a band playing in my bathroom. After the band stopped, there were some noisy patrons that took a while to clear out. Fortunately with corona restrictions the restaurant couldn't stay open super late so we were able to get to bed at a reasonable hour. It just made it hard to enjoy the room which you'd want to do because there isn't much going on at night. Ask for the rooms furthest from the restaurant and you'll fare a little better on the noise. Also, the continental breakfast was far too basic for the price point of this hotel.

Hotel Lanai is a gem in the middle of town that offers an unparalleled experience. With only 11 rooms, this boutique historic hotel provides an intimate atmosphere that makes guests feel like family. We were blown away by the full service restaurant on property that served mouthwatering dishes and had an impressive wine selection with a great happy hour.. The king size room with a patio facing town was the perfect place to relax and unwind. The hotel's location was within walking distance to local markets, hiking trails, and breathtaking views on a morning walk. We couldn't have asked for a more memorable stay! Shout out Ferlyn (Front Desk), Jacob (bartender) Jordan (hotel restaurant), Christian (Chef), Chuck (Master Sommelier) and Sayla (Housekeeper).

Stayed four days, which was a tad too long. I am glad that I came to Lanai. The highlight was a tour with just me and an esteemed local resident , Alberta de Jetkey. She was superb.
As for the hotel, it is kind of unusual and is minimally staffed. It is certainly far cheaper than the Four Seasons Resorts, but not inexprnsive either, at $330 per night. This is an historic building and I realize there are limitations, but the room is quite small, with no chair or desk. The decor is rather cool modern and there are a bunch of geewhiz electronics, which I was starting to figure out by the end of the stay. The toilet does everything but carry on a chat with you. The continental breakfast Serves a purpose, but is very basic.
The word is out that the hotel is going to close this year, at least on a temporary basis, to house construction supervisors for the owner of most of the island, Larry Ellison. That is too bad.

My family had 2 adjoining rooms. The door handle between the rooms broke off early in our stay. When maintenance came to fix it, my husband was resting, so I asked him to come back later, and suggested a time. He asked if we had dinner reservations, yet, and when I said we didn't, he invited us to attend at their restaurant - and he would make the arrangements.
So we went to dinner at the arranged time. After an hour, they were still not done with our room - so we weren't able to relax in our own accommodations. No worries, since we thought they were being gracious to us in their dining room! We were then surprised to be given the bill...NOTHING was comped!
I brought up my confusion to staff - they gave me the card to the manager. Whom I have contacted twice with no reply.
So, based on the other reviews, it seems like all is well with the hotel...until it isn't. Then you are ignored!

Hotel Lanai is beautiful and located right by all the cute shops and great restaurants in Lanai City. It is also walking distance to the Adventure Towers and right across the street from the movie theater with the best popcorn ever. I had some minor issues the first night at the hotel and the staff bent over backward to take care of them immediately. My husband and I were having some trouble finding transportation down to the beach and the gal at the desk worked hard to help us out. Erin the manager even went so far as to drive up to the hotel to bring me something I needed. I am so impressed! Will definitely come back again. :)

My husband and I stayed in the cottage at Hotel Lanai recently and would like to give an honest review of a hotel we very much enjoyed, but was different than what we'd expected having read reviews and done research online. A few of our observations to assist with your travel plans:
PROS
- this hotel is ADORABLE and has a lot of charm and history - we loved that about it
- the cottage was very well equipped - the bathroom was beautiful and updated, the water pressure was great, the TV worked well, there was free WI-FI
- the hotel provided beach towels and bags for them
- there was a cooler in our room and we could get ice from the front desk anytime we liked
- the staff at the front desk were very helpful when we spoke to them or needed recommendations
- the restaurant was DELISH - we highy recommend it
- the hotel is very close to the city (a block away) so it's easy to shop at the local market (Richards) for snacks and water or to grab a bite at a cafe
- there are bikes available for use
- parking is free
CONS/UNEXPECTED FINDINGS
- the hotel is much more in the city than we thought - it seems like it will be set off from the road, but it's right in the heart of the small city. The cottage is right next to the hospital, so we were uncomfortable leaving our window blinds up for the evening and overnight
- the hotel is not air conditioned and it can make sleeping uncomfortable on hot nights
- ****there is no longer a regular shuttle on the island! You NEED a car to get around - and the jeep rentals run about $150/day...nothing is walking distance except a market and a few cafes - the beaches, the hiking trails and the Four Seasons resorts where you might go for dinner and entertainment are too far to walk
- the hotel has recently changed management and it is clear they are in flux with some of the proceedures, etc.
- the front desk person usually goes home at 5PM or so, so if you need ice or assistance after that time you're out of luck
- breakfast is juice, coffee, tea, very small ammount of fruit and some pastries - you will likely need something more than this if you're going on a hike or to the beach for the day
All in all we enjoyed our stay - but there is not enough to do on Lanai if you don't have a car, and we could only afford a rental for a couple of nights. The lack of shuttle was shocking to us (it just happened a few weeks ago) and we would have liked a heads up in advance. We also would have liked to know how far we were from all of the sites in advance - it would have prepared us better.
We hope you find this helpful. And again, we think this is a beautiful hotel and that we would have just liked to have been prepared for the few cons/suprises before we arrived.

We have just spent 4 days on Lanai. So, please read this entire review if planning a trip. For background, we go annually to Maui during prime whale season, January thru March. We always visit a second island. This year Lanai was our "second" island. This was our 5th trip to Lanai.
The first very important decision you need to make is: Hotel Lanai or Four Seasons Manele Bay. There are several bed and breakfasts in Lanai City or you can sleep on the beach, but these accommodations are not as good as the Hotel Lanai. We stayed in the Cottage at Hotel Lanai. The Cottage is detached from the Hotel and near the back. It has a small bedroom and a small living room (and a TV). No air conditioning, but it is not needed. The Cottage is the Best room at the Hotel.
Before I start my comparison - on our previous 4 trips to Lanai, we stayed at the 4 Seasons property. Of my 88 Hotel reviews, FS at Manele Bay is my all-time favorite. So why not stay there? In the last 4 years, the cost has doubled and we wanted to try the Hotel Lanai.
Hotel Lanai:
1- Cost - For 4 nights at Hotel = 1 night at FS
2- Hotel is located in Lanai City. Four Seasons is right on Hulopoe Beach. From the Hotel, you take a Rabaca shuttle to the beach or the FS. Cost is $10/person, each way.
3- In town there are 3 main restaurants - the Grill, located at the Hotel (very good), Blue Ginger, (very good and less expensive) and Pele's. You can read my restaurant reviews.
4- Hotel offers a free continental breakfast, that is mainly cereal, fruit, and bagels. Blue Ginger has a full breakfast down the street.
5- Beaches in Hawaii are public. So, the Rabaca shuttle drops you off on the same beach as the FS guests are using.
Four Seasons:
1- You can walk to the beach and return to your room anytime you want.
2- They provide a free shuttle to town if you want to see the town (definitely yes) and eat at the lower cost restaurants.
3- If you have an ocean view room (or better), you can sit on your balcony and see whales. We see way more whales on Maui, and some whales can be seen from the beach, however the FS is higher on the hill (making whales easier to see)
4- Most obviously, the FS is one of the truly great resort hotels. The rooms are huge and beautiful. The location above the Bay is amazing.
So.....it really comes down to the cost.
On Lanai, don't bother to rent a car. Rent a jeep for one day, max. You can go to the remote parts of the island and see it all in one day in a jeep. The rest of the time, the Rabaca transportation guys were very quick to pick you up and do a great job!
Hulopoe is my favorite snorkeling Bay in the entire Hawaiian island chain. It is the #1 reason we go to Lanai. The coral is extensive, lots of fish and I saw an eagle ray this year.
Bart and Sara at the Hotel were very helpful. They also provide beach towels and coolers filled with ice.
The Lodge at Koele and the golf course are closed. I don't expect the golf course to reopen. They are working on the Lodge, but it may re-open as a wellness center.
We really like Lanai and will go back. Not sure where we'll stay.

My husband and I got married on Maui and return every year to celebrate our anniversary.
This year (February 2011) we decided to finally check out the Hotel Lanai, which looks so cute and quaint; we wanted to try something that wasn't a resort type atmosphere.
The hotel IS cute and quaint, the staff was very friendly, and our room looked lovely.
Once we had settled in and gone to bed, however, we noticed the very strong mildew odor, even in the bed.
Having been to Hawaii several times, we are familiar with the humidity, and we were also aware that the Hotel Lanai is very old, but the mildew smell was so strong and pervasive that neither of us slept at all the night we arrived.
We tried everything -- opening the windows, having the (very noisy) ceiling fan going full blast -- I actually spent a great deal of time outside throughout the night, just to get some fresh air.
The next morning we went directly to the Four Seasons, and once we found out that we were able to get a room there, we went back to the Hotel Lanai and checked out even though we had reserved our room for close to two weeks.
We explained the problem to the front desk person, and she said that she would check to see if we would still have to pay for the remaining time on our reservation.
She called us later that day to say that unfortunately we would still have to pay for the entire time we had reserved, even though we had only stayed one night, and even though the reason we left was mildew in the room.
My husband has asthma, and he ended up becoming ill and spending the next 3 days in bed.
I developed an itchy red rash on my face, neck and arms (the parts of me that were in contact with the damp and mildewy bed linens at the Hotel Lanai) that lasted for several days and was extremely uncomfortable.
Our clothes smelled so musty just from being in the room for the one night, that we had to have everything cleaned at the Four Seasons.
I tried again to get the Hotel to bend on it's early departure policy, but with no luck; I then disputed the charges to my credit card through my bank, and again had no luck.
Bottom line; the Hotel Lanai is lovely on the outside, but I would never, ever stay there again or recommend it to anyone else.
Mildew is a health hazard. They need to clean it up before someone has a more serious health problem than we had as a result.

We stayed at the Hotel Lanai 10/5 to 10/8/08 during part of a three week visit to the islands. After doing extensive research we opted for the "Keepers cottage" at the hotel. It is a small cottage not attached to the hotel itself and mostly hidden from view by the landscaping (Just to the left of the main part of the hotel). The hotel refers to it as the cottage or room 11. It has recently been renovated but still has that old plantation charm intact. The bed in the cottage was by far the most comfortable we slept in during our entire stay! There is no A/C in any unit but you are well above sea level and it gets a bit cool in the evening so none is needed. The cottage has a picnic table right outside the door. The sitting room has a sofa bed so it would be ideal for a small family needing two beds. The cottage rents for a little over $200 a night plus taxes and is well worth it.
I am attaching pictures to give you a sense of the layout but of course they really do not do it justice. As a side note, there is a TV with a DVD player although we did not use it except to catch a bit of the news. There is no refrigerator however they do provide a cooler and the ice machine is right around the corner from the cottage. There is also a blow drier, iron and ironing board. Very nice soap, shampoo and conditioner. There is no phone in the room but the cell service is fine. If you need anything from the front desk you will need to get it by 7 PM, it is not manned all night.
The cottage is quiet but is near the back door to the restaurant which the staff uses. They are as quiet as they can be and are gone by 10 PM. The restaurant is closed on Monday and Tuesday.
The restaurant is a little pricey compared to the other options in town but the food was excellent. My wife had the chicken and I had the ribs and we split a fresh Lanai Greens salad.
The free breakfast every morning on the shared lanai consisted of great coffee, juice, fresh fruit, muffins, toast and english muffins. It was nice to chat with the other guests and skim the paper every morning.
Some of the highlights near the hotel are the Mike Carrol gallery. Both Mike and his wife are super friendly and he has many of his prints/paintings of Lanai available plus the works of a few other artists. Cafe 565 offers good food and huge portions as does the Blue Ginger. If you are visiting on a Sunday very little is open. THE gas station (as in the only one on the island) and I think just one of the few restaurants in town. The Hotel restaurant is open. There is a public library at the end of town and for $10 you can have internet access at any public library in Hawaii. There is a laundromat in town and two food markets. There are some other quaint shops with local gifts.
You can either use the shuttle to get around (I think it is $33 a week). It goes between the two Four Seasons resorts, the Hotel Lanai, the airport and the ferry boat harbor. If you really want to see the island rent a jeep. You have two options, Dollar rent a car (which you ride the shuttle to pick up) or Adventure Lanai Ecoentre (which you pick up at either the airport or ferry dock, no shuttle needed).
A tip for those visiting when it is dry (like in October), it is very dusty driving around and almost impossible to keep the dust out of the car. Put everything you can in a sealed plastic bag. We wore our bathing suits and a t-shirt to drive around then when we got back just hopped in the shower dressed and rinsed all the dust off.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me via Trip Advisor and hopefully I can answer your questions.

There may be one more that I don’t know about. These two I’ve spoken with and used.
