We stopped at Tip Top Cafe for a late lunch. It was just before they closed and they graciously served us. We shared a tasty fisherman's platter of ahi, shrimp tempura, macaroni salad, and rice. Simple spot with good food.
Motel staff were very friendly and accommodating during our emergency family memorial service this week. Thank you for your kindness Tip Top Motel! We would recommend this motel to anyone on a budget.
Homestyle oxtail soup. I loved it- the bowl reminded me of a good Chinese soup. It was simple and clean with bean thread noodles julienned ginger and a clear flavorful oxtail broth. Cilantro and additional ginger were served on the side plus hot rice. We also enjoyed a fried rice moco loco slathered with beef gravy. Cinnamon toast like you'd make at home made for a simple sweet ending. The cafe is no frills... efficient but busy. The midranged Kona coffee and ice water are filled by the waitresses in between taking orders and busing tables. Lots of locals.
I would not recommend staying here. There was black mold all over the bathroom and shower ceiling. I received no response other than a genetic “I hope you enjoyed your stay,” response to the email I sent to management regarding the mold. Please save yourself the trouble and stay somewhere else.
My girlfriend and I stayed here for a night and had breakfast here the next morning. The room was serviceable. The breakfast was excellent. Fast and friendly service. Loco Moco and Banana Mac Nut Pancakes were fantastic. The coffee was two thumbs up
Kauai seemed to be the most expensive of all Hawaiian islands - we literally paid hotel prices for this motel - so it did what is said on the box. This motel is located close to bus stops that travel up and down the island and a couple of kms from the airport. If you're needing to travel and buses aren't your thing or your travel times are earlier than the 5:40am bus travel times, hire a car - ubers and taxis are also super expensive!
You may not stop here if you were driving by but that would be a mistake. It is definitely worth the stop. The food and service were excellent. Look for the Clock Tower. It seems to be a local favorite. We would definitely come here again for lunch.
We stayed at the Tip Top motel for five days in June and ate (breakfast) at the restaurant. Centrally located in Lihue, the motel was bare bones, clean, with only a TV and AC. No fridge, micro or coffee maker (Beats staying at a hotel that costs four times as much). The free wi-fi was surprisingly strong due to a router being right in our room! The restaurant, a local favorite, is a few steps away and features local food, including oxtail soup and their world-famous macadamia nut pancakes (Not to be missed!). Recommended if you're on a budget.
We checked in late for our one night stay so office was closed and we could not change the room. We found 3 cockroaches and could only catch one to kill it. The next day we complained to the lady at the counter and she was going to get us help but the Manager did not contact us. We said we are coming back the following week and did not want to if our room then would maybe have an issue. We asked when they spray and if they can assure us our room will be ok. So now we are back here in a different building and again COCKROACHES!!!!
The Tip Top Cafe is one of the best spots on Kauai. It isn’t fine dining by any means, but it’s real food, enjoyed by locals and visitors alike and it’s worth a visit. It’s one of the best values on the island too. Don’t miss the Oxtail soup. The menu has all of the local favorites, and you can’t really go wrong.
