As a Hawaiʻi Island wedding officiant, I get to see a lot of venues. The Lava Tree Tropic Inn is a peaceful retreat off the beaten path, walking distance to the Lava Tree State Park, and a quick drive to everything from newly formed lava flows to ancient rain forests. The facility is clean. Fresh tropical fruits are available at breakfast, or for the picking on the extensive property. I actually was there more than a year ago, but the selections do not go that far back. As far as I have heard, however, it remains the same. The owner/hostess is knowledgeable and can direct guests to activities, restaurants, and whatever is needed.

We had a spacious, comfortable room overlooking the gardens--it was breezy, light and very pleasant. The breakfasts were delicious and varied. It's a stone's (volcanic, that is) throw from Lava Tree State Park, definitely worth a visit to walk around the flat path provided (20 min) past fascinating Lava trees. You'll see!

We spent 5 nights in this Inn and we were delighted with the hospitality offered by Irene, her breakfasts were amazing, and she looked after us as if we were family. The room was spacious, well ventilated, and nicely decorated. The large garden is very green and with some fruit trees, but we visited it in the wrong season to enjoy eating fruit. However, Irene's breakfasts had enough fruit to satisfy everybody's tastes and needs. The only problem we had was to find the place... it was dark and difficult to see the entrance to the house road from the main road 130. We recommend to arrive during daylight. The road to the house is somewhat primitive but, despite all the rain fallen while we were there, the car was able to get to the house without problems. Ricardo & Elaine

A classic Hawaiian tropical setting away from the beachfront sun and sand. A lovely feeling of isolation made for peaceful, quiet evenings enjoying nature. Irene was a gracious, outgoing hostess who was well informed about the character and sights of this east coast of the Big Island. Breakfast was always a pleasure with freshly prepared food (eggs from the resident chickens) fresh fruit (from the trees on the property) and tasty coffee (special blend lightly laced with Kona) amongst interesting guests and lively conversation.

The good: Irene seemed kind, even met us at the gate at 9:00pm in the rain. The place was difficult to find (not on GPS, dirt road, private drive, locked gate) and she waited. She took us on a tour of the house and had our room ready. She seemed to know a lot about the island and was kind to share her thoughts. The grounds were pretty and lush and she had roosters, chickens, cats, goats running around. The bad: It is important to know that this is more of a house than an Inn. There is only one master suite that has a private bath (that we know of) and the rest are shared bathrooms with other guests. The home is old/run down and crammed full of "stuff" (felt like an episode of hoarders) and it felt very confining and unclean. Our room had a queen size bed and a tiny closet and vanity, no lock for privacy, an old worn out rug and the bedding was very damp and smelled like mildew. There was also a water stain directly above the bed (see pic). The shared bathroom was full of the other guests' personal items, there were no handles on the bathroom faucets and bathmats that were filthy, old and worn that it may have been cleaner to stand on the tile. The shower curtain was covered in black mold spots and tub floor stained brown. We decided this was not the place for us and left early the next morning, before breakfast. Irene was up and asked (rather unprofessionally) if we were moving out. She was pretty upset. We had paid upfront and did not get a refund.

The first thing that comes to mind when you arrive at the Lava Tree Tropic Inn is “this must be a little piece of paradise”. We stayed for 8 days in August 2017 and had an amazing time. Our hostess Irene took great care of us, giving us tips on what places to visit and how to get there. Irene’s breakfast is probably the best you can get on the whole island. Irene prepares almost everything herself freshly in the morning, using fresh fruit and chicken eggs from her garden. To fully appreciate it you should take your time in the morning, but who comes to Hawaii to be in a hurry? The Inn is pretty secluded (remember this when you see the driveway to the house for the first time), so you really need a car to get around, but this is an awesome place to go on day trips, especially to the Volcano National Park and the east coast of Big Island. It takes you 10-15 minutes to get to the beaches, which are mostly for snorkeling around this area. Whenever we will come back to Big Island the Lava Tree Tropic Inn will be our place to stay. Thank you Irene. Aloha Alex and Holger

Way better than what I expected! Irene is a sweet lady that really wants to support the overall experience of anyone staying at her lovely home that is quite large. The breakfasts were wonderful along with some of the people we met that were also fellow vacation travelers that we connected with. Conversation was always positive, helpful and fulfilling. Thanks Irene for contributing to what was a super awesome week! I'm sure we will see you again!

Lava Tree Tropic Inn was a perfect Bed & Breakfast and Irene was a wonderful host. We called her a few days before our trip to tell her that we would not be at Lava Trees Tropic Inn until really late, and she assured us that it was not a problem, she emailed us all the direction and information that we need to get to her house. We arrived after midnight and she was there to welcome us. The house is a few miles from Pahoa, the closest town, and a few miles from the ocean and beaches. It is surrounded by trees and tropical foliage. We stayed in the Orchid suite, which was lovely, clean and spacious with a beautiful stained glass window and a private bathroom with Jacuzzi. There were another two rooms that have their own lanai but with shared bathroom and two rooms without lanai and with shared bathroom. We stayed there for a week and every morning we had fruit juice (I love Irene's homemade Star fruit juice), a beautiful platter of various tropical fruits (longans, persimmons, bananas, grapes, mandarin oranges, pineapple, and my favorite – papaya, I never had papaya that tasted that good in my life). Most of the fruits came from her own garden; the fruits are delicately cut into small bite size. We also had yogurt and delicious granola or oatmeal, bread/ English muffin/bagels/banana bread with homemade jam and homemade Hungarian cheese spread. Sometimes we had fresh slices of avocado, cucumber, tomatoes or guacamole and of course we had a lot of excellent coffee. We also lucky that Irene's chickens laid eggs while we were there so we had spinach omelette three times, and had quiche a couple of mornings, we also had Greek spinach pie (Spanakopita) a couple of times. We enjoyed our breakfast with beautiful Hawaiian music in the background. Breakfast was a real feast which lasted for 1:30-2 hours, it's relaxation Hawaiian style so we took our time to enjoy. It's also a good chance to meet up with other guests to exchange information. Irene was so friendly, attentive and accommodating, she gave us a map with all important attractions, a list of restaurants (Kaleo's and Ning's Thai restaurant were very good) and current events. She told us about Maku'u Farmer's Market, Hilo Farmer’s Market, and Uncle Robert's Farmer's Market and she let us borrow her snorkels and beach towels. Her house was beautiful with plenty of tropical trees, and beautiful flowers. We had a great time and feel really relaxed which was exactly what we needed. We also had a good time with her cat, Boomy (Boomerang), and her 10 beautiful rooster and chickens. All in all it was the best stay. We came as guests and departed as friends. We will definitely return!

First the positive. The location is great if your goal is to get up early to see the lava. Really could not be better and the owner (Irene) is used to people leaving in the wee hours to make the lava boat. Our room was clean and comfortable. There was definitely a lot of noise from the frogs at night, but it did not really bother us. The less positive. Shared bathroom was a bit rundown and towels were stained and not obviously clean. Breakfast was only ok by any standard and far less than one expects from a "bed and breakfast" in the U.S. Granola, yogurt, fruit salad, and a couple of spreads for barely-toasted bread. No eggs offered, although from other reviews that apparently isn't true for all guests--maybe the backyard chickens were not laying that week. Our experience with the owner was mixed. She was responsive and professional, but not especially welcoming. One gets the sense of a responsible host taking in guests to help pay the mortgage more than someone with a real interest in her guests' experience.
