I just returned from Costa Rica and staying at the Hotel Punta Islita, a Marriott hotel and part of the Autograph Collection and I'll say, there were definitely things I should've known before going. So, to help future travellers, here's my review: 1. The hotel management sucks. They are not responsive to guests at all. I had to make SEVERAL calls to the hotel before even arriving just to arrange transportation from Liberia Airport. The email address listed on the website, doesn't work -- my email bounced back. I called 3 times and each time, I was placed on hold and then hung up on. Thankfully, I had a Spanish-speaking friend call for me and she was lucky enough that Victor answered the phone and was helpful. Another example of the hotel staff's unhelpfulness -- my travel companion wanted to go to the Macaw reserve and asked for some help making the arrangement; she was told it's not their thing to do and she should just check the website instead?! Lastly, the hotel gift shop was never open, despite supposedly being open from 8-4pm each day so hopefully, you won't need anything when you go. 2. Unless you fly into the small airport nearby, be prepared for at least a 2.5-3hr ride from Liberia airport and even longer if you fly into SJO. Don't believe what the website tells you in terms of miles from the airport to the hotel, I think it's a lie. The website says 48 miles from Liberia but with NO HIGHWAYS in Costa RIca and just single lane roads, it took me 2hrs and 40 minutes. And, it cost $180, ONE WAY. Oh, and the last 11-15 miles of the ride is on a dirt road that contains hills so steep, you often wonder if you're going to make it. It's NOT a comfortable or enjoyable ride, AT ALL. 3. My room was nice but it was not the cleanest room I've ever had, disappointing for the rate I paid. I was constantly killing ants, dealing with spiders, furry caterpillar things and gecko's - IN MY ROOM! Marvin from maintenance came out the first night to kill the big, furry spider and he sprayed some insecticide that really didn't do anything but made it hard for me to breathe in the room. He was supposed to do a full fumigation the next day while we were out of the room, never heard from him again and no one from the hotel bothered to check and see how we were doing. 4. The hotel only has 2 restaurants and while the food is good, it gets boring after a few days. And, if you want something to eat around 3/4pm and you're at the infinity pool, the hotel staff will tell you, that you have to go down to the beach pool to eat -- where all the kids are! I had to really apply pressure to get food sent from the beach restaurant up to the infinity pool area. As a paying customer, I should be able to eat wherever the hell I want! 5. If you have problems walking up steps or steep inclines, this is DEFINITELY, NOT the hotel for you! They don't really tell you the hotel itself is built into the side of a mountain, in the jungle -- but that's the case. So be prepared for many, many steps and steep inclines. The country itself is beautiful, one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. But I won't be going back and I'd never stay at this hotel again.

We had incredible service, and the public areas/pool/location are beautiful but man these rooms are outdated! It’s at no fault of the hotel staff but you can tell the rooms and bathrooms haven’t been updated in a very long time. I paid to upgrade to a deluxe suite (w whirlpool) plus an ocean view and everything in the room was just very old and outdated design. Such a shame considering the beautiful location.

I can’t say enough good things about this resort! First of all, the service was outstanding! Everyone was so friendly and they treat you like family. The location and views are amazing! I have never seen so many butterflies. We saw wild Macaws, howler monkeys, lizards, coatis and tons of hermit crabs at this property. The activities they offer on property are plentiful and so much fun. We did twilight zip lining, horseback riding, monkey quest, key chain making, candle making and lots of hiking. Ronald and Viales really went above and beyond! The rooms were very basic, but we were hardly in our rooms. There are two filtered water dispensers onsite, so bring your water bottle. My favorite meal here was breakfast. They brought out fresh baked pastries every morning….so yummy! We stayed at another Autograph Collection closer to Liberia Airport after our stay at Punta Islita and I wish I had not moved hotels. I would highly recommend this hotel and I plan on coming back to experience this resort again! Pura Vida!

Our family spent five incredible nights at the Punta Islita Resort. The reviews we read prior to our arrival accurately described the property and experience. Punta Islita is a very special place, but undoubtedly, it is not for everyone. It was a perfect choice for our family, but may not be the right fit for vacationers with mobility issues, families with small children since there are a lot of stairs and limited kids activities on-site, or people seeking an active nightlife. The resort is in the middle of the rainforest. It is a 2 ½+ hour drive from LIR airport (hotel reliably and easily arranged transportation for $190 USD one way for 3 passengers) and 4 ½ hours from SJO. It is very remote and there are many nature noises and bugs. If you will be frightened by centipedes or an iguana sunning itself in the middle of the path you are walking on to get to breakfast, you may want to consider another hotel. If you’re willing to trade off bug bites for the tranquility of the rainforest, including macaws, coatis, and monkey sightings along with spectacular ocean views, you will be enchanted by the resort and never want to leave. Housekeeping services are the unsung heroes at this resort. The entire resort is impeccably clean. Upon arrival, we were given the choice of housekeeping at 9 am or 3 pm. We chose 3 pm. Our room was cleaned timely and thoroughly each day. Given the number of creatures inherent in the environment, housekeeping and the groundskeepers do a phenomenal job of seamlessly keeping the hotel clean and pristine. They are definitely stars behind the scenes. Ronald and Viales are exceptional activity directors. The two men led almost every activity from the 6 am nature hike to the 6 pm dusk hike, including zip lining and horseback riding. Their passion for the area and the hotel was unparalleled. We really appreciated their enthusiasm and knowledge shared during the various hikes and monkey quests. On our last morning, Viales cheerfully led us on a monkey quest in the rain. He asked a shuttle driver to take us to where the morning nature hike had seen monkeys, and then brought a scope so we could view the monkeys up close. It was service such as this that stood out to us. The hotel should add more staff so Ronald and Viales can focus more on the activity logistics and communication of such activities to guests. The zip line is a must-do for anyone with an adventurous spirit. The food surpassed our expectations. The offerings were excellent quality, priced fairly, and beautifully plated. As other people have noted, there is one restaurant. The menu is not enormous but caters to a variety of preferences - particularly for breakfast - and contains many gluten free options. Despite the limited selection, the items prepared were visually stunning. Our family was continually inspired and impressed by the quality and presentation of the food and will be making passion fruit tiger’s milk at home for our own ceviche. Order the rice pudding for dessert. It will put a smile on your face when it arrives at your table. Note, only breakfast and dinner are served at the on-site restaurant. A limited afternoon snack menu is available by the infinity pool. The chicken skewers are the most filling snack option. Lunch is available at the Beach Club. The Beach Club food is delicious and beautifully presented too. Restaurant service was consistently wonderful. Everyone in the restaurant went out of their way to make sure we were happy with our meals and had whatever food we ordered and needed. Marriott Elite status was honored for breakfast and 4 choices of the 10+ were considered complimentary breakfast items. Victor in Reception provided stellar service. He helped us every step of the way from our initial registration to coordinating a room upgrade midway through our stay to helping us manage check out. Without Victor’s assistance, our stay would not have been nearly as enjoyable. The rooms are exactly as pictured on the website photos. Splurge for a plunge pool. You won’t be disappointed. Wifi worked great during throughout our stay. Room-for-improvement areas: 1. Activity Coordination: While Ronald and Viales are amazing ambassadors of the hotel, the logistics for guests managing the available activities needs improvement. The uncertainty of where the activity was located – Beach Club, restaurant, in-town, what time to meet, etc., caused a lot of unnecessary angst for us and other guests. This is partly because the hotel website did not seem to have the most accurate information about the activities that were complimentary and those that charged a fee. When asked in advance and upon arrival at Registration, the hotel provided a beautifully designed graphic of the events offered and whether the activity is complimentary. But that graphic isn’t available on the website or accurate. Many activities, such as kayaking, sunset, turtles, are unavailable but still on the list. Overall, inconsistencies of the activities offered and included – what times they started, where the activities meet and are located, and what activities were offered each day -- was challenging to navigate. We thoroughly enjoyed the activities we participated in, but with a $30 cancellation fee for a no-show, we were hesitant to book and then cancel a reservation. Also, while the mixology and tico making were fun to watch, more hands-on activities at the resort, being a participant rather than a spectator, would have been appreciated. 2. Adult pool – On several occasions during our stay, young children were in the infinity pool making lots of noise and ruining the relaxing atmosphere. The website clearly states that the infinity pool is for guests 16 years and older. I think the staff are too worried about poor reviews to enforce the rules. 3. Beach Club – We were aware that there was a Beach Club and figured out how to get there via signs saying ‘Playa’ leading us down the path. We would have appreciated more guidance about offerings at the Beach Club. Upon arrival, we were told that chairs were $49 a day and included some items, but we didn’t know if that amount was per chair or per cabana. Also, when we wanted a shuttle to take us back to the hotel – a few minute drive but a steep hike up the hill – we didn’t know who to ask. The service at the Beach Club was great, as was all the service, but it was one more area of uncertainty that could use more clarity for guests. 4. Complimentary water – The website said complimentary bottled water was provided in the rooms. All the bottled water in our room seemed to be part of the mini-bar and charged a fee. Also, probably due to COVID, our room did not have a coffee maker or tea service. Despite the small improvement areas, this resort deserves a five star review. It is a magical place and worth the effort to go off the beaten path. A huge thank you to Victor in Reception, Ronald, Viales, all the shuttle drivers, housekeepers, and restaurant staff for a wonderful stay!

We traveled here with our two kids. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to other families. No one under 16 is allowed to enter the pool in all of the photos. One of the days, the pool was empty for multiple hours, so we asked if our 10 year old could use it and we were clearly told no. The pool kids can use is a 15 minute walk away, down over 200 stairs. This was not clear online. They offer a shuttle, but it picks up staff members along the way and we weren't comfortable with this during, covid. We booked this resort because I had read about all of its great included activities. Most of these are no longer offered. You can zip line or rides horses, for additional fees. We tried to sign up for the free activities, but they were mostly cancelled or not possible right now. For example, the kayaking is listed, but not available because they can't move the kayaks. The turtle tour is listed, but not available, since beaches close at 6 pm. I know they don't control this, but it leaves very few activities. I signed us up for mixology, since it was listed for ages 5+. I figured they would make a virgin version of drinks and it could be fun. Really, they made a few alcoholic drinks and the bartender said kids shouldn't have come. The only other activity we could do was the dusk hike. This was good and a fun activity. If you sign up for an included activity and then don't cancel with enough notice, they then charge you $30/person! (fine print on registration form) After the included classes, the teachers provide you with a printed bill, so you can give them a tip. It shows how much they would have charged you for the activity. It is incredibly awkward for everyone. As the final place we stayed in Costa Rica, we all agreed that we felt the least welcomed here. At check in, the staff provided very little information and told us to get the info from a QR code. We felt like they just wanted us to leave their office. They barely interacted with our kids and it felt much colder than the other hotels we stayed at. In advance, we mentioned we were there for our anniversary and they never responded or mentioned it while we were there. Despite the amazing views, we don't plan to return.
