Poked this hotel as part of a package with the ferry service to Kangaroo Island. The reception staff are lovely and explained what to see and do around the hotel making the check in process very easy, even in covid times!
The hotel provided torches to do a nocturnal walk around the property to look for local wildlife which was fantastic. Kids will love that as we saw wallabies and kangaroos but other guests saw a koala too!
The room is well set out with a comfy bed, tea and coffee facilities bar fridge and TV. There is a hairdryer (not that I needed one as I need a search party to find wet hair!) but the bride said it was very effective.
Given the covid restrictions the reception staff provided snap lock bags of tea, coffee sugar and milk and another bag of toiletries. They also offered to only clean the room if we wanted it done to minimise contamination.
The pool looks lovely but no chance of us swimming this trip, way to cold!

Hi Paul Thank you very much for taking the time to review your stay with us. We are glad you appreciated the steps we are taking during this COVID time - it's an adapt and see situation every day. We are lucky to be surrounded by nature and steps away from the water here in American River with wildlife abundant. We look forward to welcoming you back the next time you are visiting the Island regards

I decided at short notice finally to tick KI off my Australian check list. I decided to stay here mainly because the hotel is part of the Accor group. What was really nice was, apart from the name, it didn't feel like part of a mega chain. The staff quickly got to know the names of guests and were very warm in their welcome. The poor desk staff spent ages helping me to decide where to go during my three days.

The rooms are kind of arranged into a motel type arrangement in a series of detached blocks. Rooms are very large with even a microwave. The rooms feel a bit rustic but that is a big party of the charm.

I ate a lot in the restaurant as a number of people in KI who I met recommended it as the best food on the island. The food was high quality but good was particularly the case for the desserts! I really wish I took a picture of the mille feuille!

The location is a but away from the two main population centres of KI, but you don't go to KI to be surrounded by people!

The picture I've uploaded is a stunning (no filter) picture of the sunset over the water right outside the hotel.

2 night stay with our coach party at the Mercure. Arrived relatively late and was quickly checked in. Our room was on the ground floor of a lodge type accommodation, rooms were basic however a complimentary bottle of wine, crisps and some cookies were available. Appreciate we were a group of 40 people however breakfast was limited, a small selection of fruit salad, juices/coffee etc plus scrambled egg, bacon on a slice of toast. For our evening meal we needed to pre order the night before, we both ordered chicken curry. I was disappointed, as were a large number of us, it arrived cold, was tasteless and only 4 pieces of chicken. The meal at $38 each wasn't worth it but you effectively couldn't go anywhere else. A friend mentioned this at reception when paying and was told "thanks for your feedback".

Good to see free unlimited WiFi, a good selection of TV channels and a outdoor swimming pool being available.

Overall a disappointing stay, with coach parties you have very limited options when visiting the island and I wouldn't recommend this hotel.

We booked in thinking this Mecure was up to date and centrally located.

We were sorely wrong.

On checkin we were told pool is open but you will get blue stuff on you swimming costumes which will wash out..... huh.... so we chose not to swim.

American River there is nothing besides a shed for drinks opens at 5pm, an oyster outlet that closes at 2.30pm every day when it is open and another cafe on the water that closes early. So nothing there at all in American River so stay at Kingscote.

The Food in Mecure Hotel was only average being charged 5 star prices as there is nothing else there in American River.

The actual food was average $35 plus for mains and entrees $15-$20, desert $15 plus but you had to say if 2 or 3 course dinner. And they never cleaned dirty plates from the table once finished which was really slack.

Breakfast was a flat $35 no matter what, 2 of out group ordered breakfast and asked for half serves but still charged $35. So for $35 you got a coffee, small fruit salad and ordered a breakfast item from the menu.

We had 2 Accor cards and they could never decide what discount we got and of course whatever they decided it was always in their favour.

Rooms were tired but were clean. On checkin they told us they would prefer not to service the rooms the next day.... again huh. So the next day no coffee stare was replace.

Trully sad accomodation and could have been so much better with some effort.

With my Accor card I got this accomodation 50% off and even at that price still not worth it, next time we will stay in Kingscote.

Dear Hi-there-all, Thank you for your feedback after your recent stay with us and its unfortunate to read that you found the resort not up your standard. We generally receive such great feedback about the meals in the restaurant and it is disappointing to read that you did not enjoy your meal. Most travelers stay in American River to get away from larger towns and it is easy to research that our beautiful little town does not have much in the way of dinning establishments. We are currently refurbishing the resort and would great if you were to give us another chance. Kind Regards Simon James General Manager

We loved staying at this resort. The property was in an awesome location to explore the island, the rooms were spacious and comfortable and the restaurant provided amazing food. There were some issues with staffing in the restaurant but the staff who worked there went above and beyond to provide us with excellent service. We loved our stay, the staff and the whole experience.

Was served Frozen Duck spring rolls and charged for other peoples drinks. When asked for room to be serviced was just given fresh towels and washers. Bathroom wasn’t clean and had remaining guests hair on the floor.

This property is old n still very functional. Our room was clean, bathroom has been re done, and painted. TV and WiFi was functional and working. Tea n coffee and biscuits were provided in pre sealed bags due to covid. The Lodge is perfectly located with a pool, and from our room you could see ocean or lake. Black swans were in view. The best part of this lodge is there restaurant. OMG you will not be disappointed at all. We made sure we dined there every night. The chef and his team did a wonderful job and everything we ate was delicious, and presented like a 5 star restaurant or at least 2 HATTS. Well done. Also I would like to thank the GM there. Wow, he greeted us when we arrived, he took our order for dinner on the first night. We saw him showing future guests around, helped a bus load of tourists with there luggage, just to say a few. Accor needs to recognise your service! You are amazing.

The lodge was comfortable but not exceptional. Although pricey, breakfast is not included (no other options within miles) and daily room cleaning is only on request for environmental reasons which we gladly supported. Some rooms were quite old in style but still comfortable. Sait water pool. Very friendly staff.

Dear Mercure Lodge,

I was at your hotel from December 28th up to December 30th.

I arrived at the lodge on Dec 28th at 7,40pm and the reception was closed so I couldn’t checking in.
No one told me (before I get to the hotel) that I could find my room keys in the mail box outside the reception.
I asked one of the restaurant waitress and she told me about that so I could go into my room.

The room 22 wasn’t as I expected, it was dirty and the housekeeping was only on request. when someone pays 386$ per night housekeeping should be done daily, no only if requested.

On the last day, I had to leave the hotel at 7,25am to catch the shuttle bus just in front of the reception and go to the ferry terminal in Penneshaw. Breakfast starts at 7,30 so I couldn’t have breakfast (that I paid for) and I got just a breakfast box (very cheap for the money I paid).
When I left the room at 7,20am on Dec 30th, I went to the reception to checking out, but the reception was closed too. I had to go just in front of the reception and wait for the shuttle bus to go to Penneshaw but I couldn’t because all the doors were closed and locked. So I had to find another way to go in front of the reception, I went to the street with all of my belongings and then I came back in front of the Mercure reception to wait for the shuttle bus.

I think this is not a professional way to work, having breakfast only after 7,30 is not a good thing for hospitality and locking all the doors before 7,30 is not a good service for customers.
Especially when you pay 770 dollars for two nights.

I am really sorry about that, but I had to tell you about my experience.
All the staff was very professional and helpful but the organisation of the hotel not.

Thank you for your attention.

Regards,
Rebecca Stefanelli

We stayed at American River for a few nights and a local told us the Mercure offered a decent meal... so we made a booking for dinner not expecting much. We absolutely couldn't believe the quality of the food and the level of service. We regularly eat out in Adelaide's top restaurants, and can say this place holds its own... so much so, we returned for a second night in a row and were equally impressed. If you go to KI, this is the best restaurant on the island... and its not close.

Hi, It's a friendly place with a nice pool and a nice restaurant. You can see only a little the see, since there is a row of trees covering the sight more or less. Anyway, Kangaroo island is amazing. Have fun!
