Quinta Splendida is all you can dream of as far as a holiday at Madeira goes. The hotel itself and its botanical garden are wonderful (and kept in perfect condition constantly by various gardeners). Staff was absolutely delightful. Parking was available against a reasonable price. Our appartment was huge and well-equipped with a big balcony. Breakfast buffet is varied and comprehensive. The location of the hotel is another advantage: being located right in the centre of Canico, restaurants, cafes, post office,bakery, supermarket, bus stop of bus to Funchal and village square with children‘s playground are all just a few steps away, right outside of the hotel grounds. The hotel itself also has 3 different restaurants, including options for both a la carte and buffet dining. While most guests during our stay were German and English couples in the age group 55+ and the hotel does not have any special amenities for kids (such as baby pool, playground, kids club), we as young family felt very welcome by the staff and the other guests. We loved our stay and hope to be back.

The Quinta Splendida is absolutely wonderful. It would be hard to find any hotel in the world with nicer gardens. The rooms and apartments are sympathetically laid out within the grounds. You have a choice of half board, bed and breakfast or room only. If you choose the latter, you can still opt to use the hotel restaurants where high quality meals are on offer. Other restaurants and cafes are nearby as are supermarkets if required. The swimming pool is very inviting and sea views can be had from most parts of the grounds and many of the rooms. Reception is very helpful and organised a hire car for us. The village of Canico is very pleasant and a 15 minute walk ( downhill ) to the coast or buses are available if preferred. A bus stop next to the hotel will take you into Funchal ( about 20 minutes ) and costs 2.2 Euros. Madeira itself is a wonderful island with some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere in Europe. Definitely worth exploring. The other big bonus at the moment is that Madeira is the safest place in Europe regarding Covid 19. No quarantine is required on return to the U.K. and everyone is given a free test on arrival at Funchal airport. You need to stay at your hotel until you receive the result and this takes only approx 12 hours. We received the result in about 6 hours, and if, as in our case, you have a room with a balcony or terrace, it is no hardship to look out at the beautiful gardens. The weather when we stayed in October was typically 25 degrees.

Stayed for 7 days B&B. Did not know what to expect. Had to isolate in room on arrival until I got my Covid test results. Room was spot on (1047), great view over the gardens and beyond could see the sea. Had room service as i could not leave the room, octopus salad, very nice. Room had a large balcony, 2 chairs and a table, and 2 sun beds. The rooms below had their sunbeds in the garden in front of their balcony/terrace. Rooms were studios, with a kitchen (oven, fridge, kettle, no toaster or microwave). Bathroom was huge with a bath and shower over the bath. Dining table and chairs and a little lounge area with a settee. Their was a tv, but limited English channels. The hotel is more like a resort and covers a large area. The gardens stretch around the whole area and are breath taking. The pool area is located at the bottom of the gardens and there are paths that lead off in all directions as you stroll down. The pool area is backed by the gardens at one end, and views of the sea at the other. plenty of sunbeds and there is a pool bar that serves snacks, here i had a tuna salad which was lovely. Breakfast was from a menu and was nice, the coffee was excellent, you could opt for dinner if you were not half board for 20 euros per night. I did not use the spa, but went in to look around and its huge, its like going through the hobbits front door into the tardis, its massive. The hotel is located in the old part of Canico, near the church. You have a supermarket just outside along with a bakery and butchers, there is another supermarket past the church that's part of the shopping centre, which has a Chinese restaurant. Plenty of coffee shops, restaurants and bars in the area. The hotel shuttle was not in operation, but you can the catch the local bus into Funchal which stops at the bottom of the cable car, cost is 2.20 euros. I did not want to come home, the staff were excellent and i certainly felt relaxed with the beautiful gardens and lovely smells. Will be coming back to this hotel.

The Quinta Splendida is situated in an ideal location close to the small town of Canico in the south east of the island. The hotel is close to a bakery, supermarket, bars and restaurants. It is has a bus stop to Funchal outside and there are further buses allowing you to explore the east of the island from the centre of Canico. It is set up high overlooking the sea. A 25 minute walk takes you to the seafront, but it is a steep climb back up, but there is a bus if you need one. We stayed in one of the Spa rooms, which was enormous, spotlessly clean and very well equipped. There was a large balcony with sun loungers and a table and chairs. We liked the underfloor heating, which made the room comfortable in the evenings in December.
Breakfast was extensive and all the staff in the dining room were very good. We especially liked Rosa and Monica, who were always cheerful. We ate at the hotel a few times and the food was excellent.
Reception were very helpful, going out of their way to help us. They booked walking tours for us and supplied us with information about buses and the local area. Nothing was too much trouble.
Out holiday was cut short by a day, due to Covid restrictions and the hotel refunded this money.
We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and we hope to return once restrictions have been lifted.

This was our first time in Madeira, chosen because it was a ‘green list’ destination and a good deal from Jet2 holidays! The gardens are beautiful and a joy to walk around. Our room was a side sea view studio and was very large and clean although a bit tired and dated. The kitchenette area was well equipped but a small bottle of washing up liquid would have been very helpful! It was nice to have a full sized fridge for keeping bottles of water cold, a very good supermarket is next to the hotel. The breakfast buffet was ok, masks obviously to be worn but you are also supplied with plastic gloves. The hotel was about half full while we were there , the pool bar was open from 11am-6pm but no other bars open for drinks in the evening, also the shuttle bus to Funchal is not operating. The public bus was good, running about every 40 minutes. We only ate evening meals in the restaurant twice as unfortunately both my husband and I were unwell for a couple of days. The food we had was delicious, especially the Thai food we had on the last night, the mango and sticky rice was as good as we have had in Thailand! The small town of Canico is well equipped with a very good pharmacy! We were able to have our antigen tests required for our return to the UK at the unit in the shopping centre set up for this with the results ready in 30 mins. We really liked having our own small garden area outside of our room with sun beds and a table and chairs as we were feeling under the weather it was very peaceful!

This was our first visit to Maderia and was a bit disappointed with our stay at the hotel Quita splendida Spa. Upon arrival there was no welcome to the hotel and we were shown to our room which was damp and musky smell, we dicided not to take the room and requested an alternative or an upgrade which we upgraded. Generally the hotel appeared very tired and required updating in many areas especially rooms. We found the beds to be hard and no air conditioning in the room which must be a problem in high summer. The service and food was very good with no complaints but you really do need a car to visit sites as the hotel is situated in the hills. Would I go go back? Probably not.

This was my 2nd stay, 2 weeks this time on bed and breakfast. I had room 1104, which is a short walk through the vegetable patch. Room was excellent, it was a studio so had a kitchen and dining area, it also had a lovely terrace with a garden, sunbeds and a view to die for. TV CNN was the only English language channel. Breakfast had a good selection to choose from, the rolls are dangerous, really tasty.. good coffee. Had dinner in the restaurant a couple of times, the thai meal was gorgeous, hats of to the chef.. the salads are excellent especially the tuna salad at the pool bar.. watch out for their daily specials for around €8. Staff are lovely, friendly, helpful and couldn't do enough for you. I arranged my test to fly home through the Madeira app, which is free if you used your nhs vaccine letter to get in to Madeira, it was done at the airport (taxi €35 return) ready in about 12 hours. No jet2 rep at the hotel so you are on your own when it comes to testing. Easy walk into the old town centre, with loads of cafes, a couple of supermarkets, a couple of restaurants. Bus stops virtually outside, number 155, €2.20 each way to Funchal or you can buy a pass. Lovely views on the journey down to funchal.

The main asset of the hotel is the fact that it is situated in a very beautiful and very big botanical garden. What is also perfect about it is the big swimming pool with a nice view of the sea, well-furnished rooms (we had a very big one with a kitchenette) and the excellent food in the restaurant. While we thought breakfast was mediocre, the evening meals were delicious, and there was well-prepared fish available every evening (choice of two main courses). A very small part of rooms (perhaps 20 or less) were occupied in June 2021, so we had the swimming pool almost for ourselves, which can hardly happen in full season. Also the hotel parking place may be too small in full season.

What a beautiful place! The gardens were stunning and the only noise was birdsong. We had a studio room, perfectly adequate size and decor (not ultra modern, more traditional Madeiran style) with balcony which had a fabulous view. Outdoor pool was clean and refreshing (chilly at first!) Did not use the Spa so can’t comment on that. Staff all helpful and friendly. Amazing choice at breakfast, everything you could imagine. It was quiet despite being half term in UK. Mostly, but not exclusively, older couples and not many young children. (Suited us fine!) Bus (155) into Funchal was comfortable and easy, about 20 minutes, bus stop by the bakery about 50 yards up the road. Taxis are plentiful and reasonable cost. We didn’t hire a car. Various excursions can be booked from Reception, we went on a minibus tour of the west of the island, which was well worth the €39 each. The area is steep and hilly, as is the whole island, we walked down to the Carbonara restaurant one evening, which is worth a visit, but no way were we walking back up - Taxi definitely worth the 5 euros! There are a few restaurants close by which are an easy 5 minute walk and the main hotel restaurant is good. Try the madeiran speciality, black scabbard fish with banana and passion fruit :) Limited evening entertainment (if you want nightlife, go elsewhere) but we were quite happy to sit on our balcony, listen to the birds and relax. Plant lovers will be in heaven here. I was!

Quinta Splendida provides a glorious botanical retreat. Superb gardens, excellent spa and efficient staff. Canico itself is a marvellous location at Christmas time with much local celebration in the square - lovely to be away from the more tourist focused sites but these are only a short drive away and the bus service is excellent.
