Quick two night visit to Sesame Place and Newtown. Read negative reviews but thought written by folks who don’t get the fun of staying at historic B&B’s. I was correct. Brick Hotel is a funky old building in a town full of history. Ground floor is a restaurant (Rocco’s) which serves good food and stays busy. Restaurant front desk is where keys to rooms are left for guests. Ladies at front desk do not assist except to give a card with owner’s number should questions arise. Otherwise the keys are available on the desk by 3:00pm check in time. Grab keys and head up to your room. We stayed in third floor “Wally Room-302”. Figured best to put a floor between us and restaurant. Good idea as the room was quiet.

Large room with small flatscreen TV, private bathroom with good level of hot water for an old house, Queen sized comfortable bed and air conditioning that took a bit of adjustment to keep from being too cold. No fridge in room but was able to get ice at bar in the restaurant. Second day we bought ice and a bucket to keep beverages cool. Lack of ice machine does present an issue that as indicated can be addressed.

The restaurant valet parking lot is also for the hotel (at no charge). Yes, front door of restaurant is never locked as a review mentioned, however each room has it’s own lock and this area is very safe. We met owner who gave the unique history of the hotel. She also talked about some of the rooms (second floor) which people have claimed are haunted. We heard no unexplained noises or saw anything weird. No breakfast provided, but many options in the very walkable town for meals. We had a very comfortable stay. Not for guests who cannot climb stairs or need room service. If you want to soak in the history, this is a good pick.

Bait and switch both price and room. Was had on both of them. Don't even believe your confirmation. Make sure you look at the room with your own eyes Don't believe ANYTHING that management tells you over the phone because it will all change when you get there.

First, we were overnight guests and didn’t eat at the Brick Hotel, so perhaps Chef Gordon Ramsey’s overhaul of the kitchen and restaurant in 2015 has worked out.

We arrived to check in around 4:00pm yesterday and were directed away from parking near the building by the complimentary parking valets. Parking close to the main entrance is reserved for diners, not overnight guests (probably paying more) with suitcases. Mmmkaaaay.... My husband dropped me off so he wouldn’t have to drag my bag from 50 yards away. I checked in, very low tech, one key for both of us in an envelope. I grew up in Bucks County and this is an 18th Century inn so I expected to pull my arthritic legs up the stairs, but I also expected a young bellhop to assist with the bags. The three young receptionists informed me there was no such service as I looked to spy we had been put on the top floor. The proprietress arrived and called someone from the serving staff to take my bag up and cordially arranged with her parking staff to allow us to park closer to the front door. All’s well that ends well.

Nope. When my husband reconnected with me and we two 60+ year olds made it to the third floor, my bag was no where to be found. I started back down, and on a hunch searched the 2nd floor. There it was, down the hall, sitting by itself associated with no particular room on the wrong floor. (I’m glad the young man refused my tip earlier. Thanks for nuthin’, dude.) I humped it back upstairs to find the queen bed my husband reserved was, in fact, a full. There are none of the usual amenities like a coffee maker. The light switch didn’t work, one lamp didn't work, there was an extremely noisy window unit cooling the room so we didn’t bother to watch the TV, the wallpaper was twisted and badly done, the bed linens unsubstantial, the furnishings looked tawdry, but clean, so perhaps the bollocking Chef Ramsey gave them in 2015 had some effect.

We had to attend an event off the property and didn’t have the time or inclination to change rooms.

When we returned, we were too tired to sort out better accommodation so we thought we would “rough it.” I called the hotel number for the WiFi password (with my own phone, there was no hotel phone to call the front desk) and was informed by the proprietress I would have to bring my iPad and/or phone DOWNSTAIRS to get it set up! I was already in my PJs so I opted to suck up 4G minutes instead.

I digress. The full-sized bed and cheap pillows offered me the most uncomfortable sleep of my 62 years (including backpack camping and European hostel-hopping of my youth). Because I couldn’t sleep, I poked around online and found the video of the 3rd season, 6th episode of Hotel Hell featuring the Brick Hotel! Our room was one of those refreshed by Ramsey’s team in November of 2015!!! I could tell by the gray chevron wallpaper. Our room, 303 or the Pearce Room, certainly looked NOTHING like the luscious boutique hotel “after” rooms represented on the video! This morning, we escaped by 6:30. No one was downstairs.

They don’t tell you in their advertising, but you *will* have to haul your bags up flights of stairs to your room. If they are busy, you may be shunted off to a creepy room with only one full bed despite what you reserved.

The restaurant was busy, so perhaps Ramsey’s lessons sunk in there.

We wish them well, but we won’t be staying there again.

Response from Gold2006, Manager at The Brick Hotel
Responded May 31, 2018
Thank you for staying with us. We are sorry about your experience. You booked the room through EXPEDIA where it specifies that it is a full size bed and not a queen. But sorry if there was any misunderstanding. No Gordon Ramsay did not provide us with any linens. Hope guests understand that it was a show that was exaggerated for show ratings according to Gordon Ramsay scripts. We do regularly buy new linens. We are filled to capacity every weekend and the linens would not survive if we did not change them every few months. We have taken note of the pillows and will buy new ones. Yes, our building is old and with the brick walls it is tough to get the internet connection everywhere. We are trying to get the wifi to the third floor. Gordon Ramsay was here 3 years ago with his own agenda of ratings and show biz. For the record, we did not even invite him here. We are a 255 year old building and so we do not have an elevator. Sorry about the mix up of the rooms. The boy understood second floor. Gordon Ramsay did not do anything for the restaurant. His whole show was a hoax and not the truth. Now 3 years later, we have new operators in the restaurant that are really skilled restaurateurs who have invested a lot of time and money and are doing an "outstanding" job. The hotel is being renovated with all rooms being scheduled to be renovated this year. We have taken your feedback into consideration and will accordingly make changes. Thank you for the feedback and hopefully you can stay with us on the first floor and go up only one flight of stairs.

this hotel is in a great location . Newtown is a delightful and charming gem . The charm ends upon entering your room at the Brick Hotel. What looked like mold was everywhere, bathroom baseboards, tile floor/grout, in the window AC unit. Wallpaper peeling off the walls. The windows are likely original which is fitting but they don’t close . Gaps in windows let the bugs in. Contrary to hotel description , there is no front desk and no staff so the front door of the Inn is left unlocked all night . On our last night , we were the only car in the parking lot so it felt abandoned. The area seems safe but we felt vulnerable . Anyone can just walk in off the street . The restaurant that leases space on the ground floor is where you get your key but they are not hotel staff . There was no staff on site when we left the key .

The room we had (302) was horrible. The floor was so slanted I would consider it a safety issue. I got out of bed and lost my balance due to the floor being so uneven. The temperature was hard to control, possibly because the knob was broken on one of the controls. The noise from the restaurant was too much for me. It went on until after midnight and you could hear every clink of the dishes being cleared from their tents and outdoor seating areas outside. No sleep at all. I couldn’t wait to get out of this place.

Plumbing is awful. The shower foes from normal & you have to wait and set it just “so”… per their instructions.. then in middle of our shower goes from ok to burning hot or freezing cold without touching any taps… on top of that the a/c leaked all over carpeted floor and they could not stop it so put towels under still and wet carpet for 2 days before we left. No coffee make or such so you have to go a few blocks to get coffee. Bed uncomfortable and extra a/c box was put in with duct tape that kept peeling off. Manager who tried to help was nice but the need a plumbing remodel.

I learned that this place was on an episode of Hotel Hell AFTER I had already stayed there, and let me say if I'd seen the episode beforehand we would have chosen another hotel. Dirty place, wasn't any better than the episode I watched. there are other hotels in the area. try them out.

Id like to start off by saying that the hotel and staff were lovely and very sweet.

However, an incident occurred while I was staying at the hotel and because I did not feel comfortable staying the night there anymore I was told I would get a full refund. Its been five months and I have yet to see the money in my account. I am extremely disappointed in the ownership of this establishment, I have been nothing but patient with them and all I have in return are emails saying that the refund "couldn't be processed" and other excuses. I was originally told I would see it in two weeks... Then 30-60 days and now, since its been 5 months I am done waiting and holding my tongue. I have filed a claim through my bank and I will be calling the better business bureau about how terrible the ownership is here. This has been absolutely absurd.

We made a last minute trip to a charity event and need a place that was ecenomical not 250.00 a night and found this quaint hotel. The price was right but that was about it for us. I will start with the fact that this was just going to be a place to lay my head at night in between events of fund raising, well my head was never more uncomfortable. I did not sleep of the two nights I was in town, the bed springs made sure that I was not bale to close my eyes longer than 5 minutes at a time. Horrible experience, we will not stay in this hotel again, I would recommend it to someone that I was struggling with appreciating, just to know that there struggle was my struggle too.
