On arrival my wife and I were greeted by a pleasant young man, once booked in he asked if we needed help with our luggage, which we declined. Our room was clean and a reasonable size, bathroom was what one would expect in an ensuite, clean and supplied with a hairdryer. Our room also had an ironing board and iron. Breakfast had a lot of choices, all the choices made for our week stay were good portions and cooked well. We ate at least four times in the evenings and each meal was cooked to perfection, I personally liked the rack of lamb, although the homemade steak and onion pie with vegetables, was the best I tasted. Overall our stay at the White Hart Hotel was a pleasant one with excellent staff and we would recommend it to anyone.

Whilst staying nearby a quick internet search indicated The White Heart was offering a varied menu. I found the bar dining area tired and in need of some TLC. There was a small lounge area but we sat at our table straight away. The important things were: 1. All the staff were totally professional, engaging and customer focussed. 2. As said the menu offered a great range of choices at very reasonable prices. 3. My food was home made, fulsome and just as I like it. Nothing left on the plate. I declined a look at the desert menu on the grounds that I would let my eyes overrule my brain. No complaints. Highly recommended.

After reading the review of this charming hotel by Clair Pain, I felt that a different perspective should be offered. It is quite true that the rooms would benefit from modernisation but the room in which my wife and I stayed, room 3, was clean, the beds were comfortable, and the water for the en suite bathroom was wonderfully hot. The food was outstanding - breakfast freshly cooked to order - and the attitude of the waiting staff could not be bettered. It is hardly surprising that there is noise from the passing traffic in the morning as ths is a town centre hotel, and is less than 5 minutes walk from the bus and railway station. The next time we visit St Austell we will have no hesitation in choosing the White Hart again.

Seriously disappointed, as had high hopes for this hotel after paying over £200 for our stay. ......Location for Cornwall was excellent, but struggled to get any sleep, due to doors banging, outside rowdy groups shouting, screaming, obviously drinking/drugs issues. We did comment to staff, but were told it was due to a nightclub close by. The room was basic, clean, but on top floor, no lift and I had requested less stairs due to my mobility issues...was told it would be looked into, but it was not changed. I struggled greatly with so many flights of stairs ! Bed was comfy, but the bathroom was dire, I struggled to get into a high bath, for a shower that did not shower you, just sent a jet of water straight across the room, was not adjustable other than temperature by taps, was old, grubby , dated. ....The dining room / bar concerned me, as wherever I sat, was bothered by flies, fruit flies....looked up, fans covered in these, again I pointed this out to staff, obviously not cleaned . .... A young gentleman ( member of staff obviously in charge) forced our stay to end with no breakfast, and a very upset partner, which in turn upset me! He refused my partner more alcohol, no reason, no explanation, just denied. My partner spoke to this young man for a while, but it made no difference, and I could not finish my food as was so upset, so we went to the room, left early in morning. This young man really needs some training in communication skills, hospitality, customer service!!!! All in all, this is one hotel to avoid especially if any form of mobility/disability, or if you require a high level of customer service.

Response from lynn beard, Owner at The White Hart
Responded 4 weeks ago
Good Afternoon & thank you for taking time to review us. I'm really sorry your stay with us was not up to your expectations. I understand that recollections may differ. You was indeed refused service of alcoholic beverages. The reason for this was was indeed given to you and explained. I Believe you told us that you had just returned from the brewery in which explained why we made the professional decision to refuse anymore alcohol. I have looked into your booking & found that no request of a lower floor room was made, we were fully booked so were unable to transfer you on this occasion so apologies for that. When requests are made before your stay, we do the best we can to accommodate. Your entitled breakfast in the morning was missed on your own discretion. You was most definitely not forced out, but apologies if you may have felt that way. We do appreciate any feedback regarding your room, the level of service and cleanliness however we are left rather confused with the perfect scores you gave us on your feedback form left in your room. Thank you for choosing to stay at the White Hart, I can only apologise that it wasn't the stay you expected.

Wonderful meal, good menu. Homemade food. Stayed local to this pub/hotel and food was excellent. Highly recommend. Great to dine here after great days out on holiday. Our guest house recommended and they are right to do so. Tasty.

The White Hart is a charming place with a nice bar/restaurant (a bit old-fashioned in a good way) and very friendly and professional staff. The food is nice. The rooms are quite comfortable but old. The windows are extremely old so you can hear every little noise from outside crystal-clear. This makes this accommodation totally unsuitable for people who can only sleep in peace and quiet (I don't have that problem).

We stayed at the White Hart for a week at the beginning of July, the hotel was a very good base for travelling around Cornwall, has it's own car park over the road, on a first come basis, we stayed in room 13, the room was clean and tidy, the bed was very soft but comfy, the bathroom was a bit dated and could do with an up grade, but was ok for what we needed. We even got used to the sea gull squawking all night, quite soothing to be honest. The breakfast ooooh the breakfast was amazing freshly cooked to order, although the plates were as hot as lava, we ate in the hotel 3 times during our stay, Sunday lunch is amazing too, we also had desert blueberry cheesecake on the Sunday was fab, come with fresh blueberries, and raspberries, and clotted cream ice cream, had the same again on Friday night, wasn't as good, looked like it had been thrown on the plate with a full punnet of blueberries crushed on top, the pie was to die for, if you stay here have the pie, you will not be disappointed. Most of the staff were fantastic, Andrew you was the best, couldn't do enough for us, nothing was too much trouble, the Manager was a lovely lady had a few chats with her during our meals. Would definitely come back to the White Hart.

This hotel is lovely looking building in the centre of st Austell, it has a small (first come first served) car park and well located for local attractions like, eden project, lost gardens of Heligan, and Charlestown. Our room (12) was adequate with comfortable beds and well equipped en suite, and tea/coffee making facilities. The room itself is a little tired and could benefit from an update, and don't expect any view! But we slept and rested well. The staff are very smartly turned out, attentive and helpful. The food was very good breakfast was well cooked and evening meal was reasonably good value. The hotel unfortunately is let down by St Austell itself, I think we were there when the local vodka and crack appreciation society were having their AGM? and slightly worrying when you are given side door key because they "don't like to let the locals in"! I ventured into the town once and the shopping centre was like something from a distopian/trainspotting type film, so run down. One of the locals was in a corner on a stairway (I think he may have been inspecting the drainage?) He muttered something to me but to my shame I don't speak Cornish.. I think he was inviting me to visit the local hospital? He may have been from the Cornish tourist board? To sum it up.. If you pop a little diamond on top of a dog turd, it's still what it is! But 10/10 for effort.

I read in a guidebook that ”St. Austell as a town doesn’t have much to offer”. That may be so, but there is at least this hotel. Found it to be an excellent starting point for exploring Cornwall in all directions. Nice and clean rooms with comfy beds, excellent and friendly service and good atmosphere. Breakfast cooked to order, with quite a selection on the menu. In fact, the dinner menu also surpassed my expectations fir such a small place and the food was excellent value for money. After a day of Cornish adventures, it was really nice to wind down in the bar with a pint of the St. Austell Brewery ales.
