Sentinel Hotel's prime location garners appreciation from travelers, placing guests in the heart of local attractions, dining, and shops. While the hotel's atmosphere receives praise for its historical charm and aesthetic blend of old and new, opinions on value diverge, with some guests feeling prices are steep relative to the amenities provided, which include comfortable accommodations and attentive service.
Although the rooms are generally seen as charming and clean, critiques arise over dated decor and occasional noise. Service quality is often lauded, yet some guests note inconsistencies.

Luxurious, older hotel. Was pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a top floor suite with a private deck & firepit. Also had a fireplace inside and a large bathroom.
Within walking distance of many restaurants, high-end shopping & entertainment.
The valet, front desk and housekeeping were helpful and available whenever we needed help.
Will definitely stay here again!

This was by far one of the best hotels we’ve stayed in as far as customer service, comfort, cleanliness and convenient location for visiting Portland. We would absolutely stay here again. We stayed in a fabulous corner king room. We did not use their valet parking because of the cost but found a parking garage right around the corner for a much more reasonable cost. The amount we paid for the room was worth it.

This is definitely a hidden gem! The location, to the amenities, staff, and just overall scenery of this Hotel is truly something to appreciate. Me and my Fiance came here to celebrate my 24th birthday, we booked a terrace suite which was absolutely stunning and was pleased to be complementary upgraded to a nicer larger room and they also let me check in few hours early and waved an early check-in fee for my birthday! Dylan at the front desk, made my birthday and experience at this hotel, a definite 10 out of 10 I felt very comfortable and welcomed and like all my needs would be met To the best of his ability and he did a phenomenal job! We will definitely be coming back and staying here again. I highly recommend. Thank You so much Dylan for giving me an unforgettable birthday experience!

My husband booked this hotel for my birthday trip, hoping to treat me to something special. When he made the reservation, he was promised a top-floor king suite with a balcony, a private bar, and an all-inclusive stay. Unfortunately, none of that was true. Instead, I was placed in a queen room on the fifth floor, where the walls were dusty, the chairs stained, and the floors appeared unclean. Behind the bedside tables were clumps of dusty cords, and the two TVs came with a single filthy remote. To make matters worse, the bed wasn't even made properly.
Another interesting note is that there were two light switches in the room. One connected to nothing, as the room only had lamps. I went around testing each switch to find one that worked, only to discover that none did; the lamps had to be turned on individually. The only lamp that responded was in the bedroom, which worked with the other switch.
The coffee machine was broken and leaked everywhere. When I asked for hot coffee, I was given a stack of towels and two coffee bags meant for a different machine that I didn’t even have access to.
When I called for room service for dinner, I was informed that it was only available for breakfast and came with a $5 delivery fee. The front desk staff were kind enough to bring my meal to me anyway, given all the issues I had faced.
I tried to enjoy the wine bar and another bar nearby, but neither allowed room charges; only Jake's offered room charge and room service for breakfast.
Overall, the way this hotel is marketed is highly misleading, and the experience did not match the price. We don’t often spend money like this, so my disappointment was magnified. For similar pricing, I would recommend staying at the Ritz for a far better experience.
I tried to upload photos and videos, but the only one that would upload is the gross remote control.

Dear Traveler08765075863, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your recent stay at Sentinel. We are deeply sorry to hear that your experience was so profoundly disappointing and that it fell far short of the special birthday celebration you and your husband had envisioned. We are extremely concerned to learn about the discrepancies between what your husband was promised during the reservation process and the room you received. A top-floor king suite with a balcony and private bar is vastly different from a queen room on the fifth floor, and we sincerely regret this error and any miscommunication that may have occurred. Furthermore, we are disheartened to hear about the cleanliness issues you encountered, including dusty walls, stained chairs, unclean floors, and dusty cords behind the bedside tables. This is absolutely not reflective of the high standards of cleanliness and maintenance we strive to uphold at Sentinel. The malfunctioning light switches, broken coffee machine, and limited room service options you described are also unacceptable and not in keeping with the level of service we aim to provide. We are also very sorry to hear about the confusion surrounding room charges at the various bars. We strive to make all policies clear and consistent, and we regret any inconvenience this caused. It is clear that we failed to deliver the exceptional experience you deserved, especially for such a special occasion. Your feedback is invaluable to us as we strive to improve our services and ensure that all our guests have a positive and memorable stay. We would be extremely grateful for the opportunity to discuss your stay in more detail and to learn more specifics so that we can address these issues thoroughly. Please contact us directly at your earliest convenience. We sincerely hope to have the chance to regain your trust and demonstrate the true Sentinel experience. Sincerely, The Sentinel Team

We booked this hotel through our Venture x credit card since there were stated extra benefits. Ultimately we regret staying at the Sentinel and will stay elsewhere next time. The pet fee was not disclosed until we checked-in ($65). The front desk attendant said it came with a pet bed, the pet bed never arrived to the hotel room. There is a bar that is completely open to the lobby. When we arrived to check in, it was so loud in the bar, the lobby attendant and I had to yell to be able to hear each other. The upgrade through our Venture X card was unremarkable, a queen to a king bed. We never got to use the free breakfast vouchers and the $50 experience credit essentially covered some of the pet fee. My wife has a gluten allergy and they couldn’t accommodate/make anything safe for her to eat. We had to eat breakfast elsewhere. The bathroom was dirty, and the bathrobe had a giant stain on the front.
The overall aesthetic of the hotel was beautiful, but hard to enjoy with the club music blasting through the main floor.

Dear 995abigailr, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your recent stay at Sentinel. We sincerely regret to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations and that you do not plan to return. We understand your disappointment regarding the pet fee and the missing pet bed. While we strive to be transparent about all fees associated with our hotel, and do communicate the fee on our website, we apologize if this was not made clear to you during the booking process. We also regret that the pet bed did not arrive in your room as promised and that the experience credit did not fully meet your needs. We are also very sorry to hear about the noise level from the bar during your check-in, and that it interfered with your ability to communicate with our front desk team. We understand how frustrating this must have been, especially after a long journey. It is important to us that all of our guests are comfortable. Regarding the breakfast vouchers, we are truly sorry that we were unable to accommodate your wife's gluten allergy. We strive to cater to all dietary needs and are disappointed to hear that we fell short in this instance. Finally, we are disheartened to learn that your bathroom was not cleaned to our usual standards and that your bathrobe had a stain. This is certainly not reflective of the level of cleanliness and attention to detail we strive to maintain at Sentinel. While we are pleased that you appreciated the overall aesthetic of our historic hotel, we understand that the issues you encountered significantly detracted from your experience. We would be grateful for the opportunity to discuss your stay in more detail and learn how we can improve. Please feel free to contact us directly at your convenience. We hope to have the chance to restore your faith in Sentinel and demonstrate the high level of service and comfort we aim to provide all our guests. Sincerely, The Sentinel Team

We found out that our flight had been postpone 24 hours and need a place to stay in Portland Oregon. Since we love the downtown area of Portland we selected a hotel called the Sentinel, it sounded like a nice downtown hotel at a reasonable price. It was a wonderful surprise when we checked in! It was a quaint, beautifully restored old building. The desk staff when we checked in were friendly and careful to keep our room location and number private from others in the lobby. The next morning when we were ready to check out, the morning staff was helpful and friendly, and stored our luggage until it was time to go back to the airport. Our room was gorgeous, it was a corner room with a beautiful fireplace, comfy robes, bed, and an oversized bathroom. Jake’s, the restaurant on street level had great food and drinks. Their wait staff were friendly and offered great recommendations from the menu.

Dear Connie, Wow, what an adventure you had at Sentinel! 🌟 Your review has us doing a happy dance here in Portland. 🕺 First off, major kudos for turning a flight delay into a serendipitous discovery. 🛫 When you stepped into our lobby, you stumbled upon a hidden gem—the kind of place that whispers secrets from its beautifully restored walls. 🏨 And those desk staff? They’re like the gatekeepers of magic, ensuring your room felt like your own private oasis. Now, let’s talk about that corner room—oh la la! 🔥 A fireplace, comfy robes, and an oversized bathroom? It’s like the universe conspired to give you the coziest nook in the city. 🛌 And Jake’s, our street-level culinary wizardry hub, served up delights that danced on your taste buds. 🍽️ As you headed back to the airport, we waved goodbye, knowing you’d carry a piece of Sentinel with you. 🌆 Until next time, keep those travel vibes alive, and remember: You’re part of our Portland family now! 🌟 Cheers to more adventures and unforgettable moments, William

Well, you can’t control the weather… I got the room purely for the terrace with the fireplace. Once it rains the fire pit does not work- if I knew there wasn’t an overhang and with checking the weather I would have changed my room, although the view was spectacular on the top floor!
The ‘no parking available’ was at a surprise, but I could have researched more. The front desk agent was super helpful over the phone and in person with info on spots relatively close.
The top floor has complimentary snacks and drinks- in a quiet space down the hall…we found out AFTER we asked the front desk agent where a convenience store was (driving a couple blocks away)… kinda bummed at that considering that this isn't a cheap stay.
But being allowed to explore each hall was nice to see the interior design!
The architecture was beautiful (second reason why I went to the sentential).
The Heriz rug in the lobby is beautiful and the gym is a vibe!!!
The only thing I’d mention is the floors in the room did not looked vacuumed, and I know it’s “industry standard” for an incidental charge… I’ve just never been surprised with the $100 amount… I was not told when I was in the midst of running my card- I asked if that was the remaining $33 mentioned on my invoice… then I got surprised looking at my bank statement soon after.
It was an experience to have for the building it’s self, but not a place I’d return with all the let downs.

Dear kinzie2024, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your recent stay at Sentinel. We appreciate you acknowledging both the positive and negative aspects of your experience. We're glad that you appreciated the architecture of our historic building, particularly the Heriz rug in the lobby, and that you enjoyed the unique atmosphere of our gym. We are also pleased that you found our front desk agent to be helpful and informative, especially regarding parking options. It is true, as we are located in the heart of downtown Portland, on-site parking is not available. However, we do our best to provide guests with alternative options nearby. We understand your disappointment regarding the unusable fireplace on the terrace due to the rain. While we cannot control the weather, we regret that this impacted your enjoyment of the room, especially since it was a primary reason for your choice. We also apologize that you were not informed about the complimentary snacks and drinks available on the top floor until after you had inquired about a convenience store. This is certainly not the level of proactive service we aim to provide, and we will address this with our team. Regarding the cleanliness of the room, we are very sorry to hear that the floors did not appear to be vacuumed to your satisfaction. This is not reflective of our usual standards, and we will be addressing this with our housekeeping team. Finally, we apologize for any confusion regarding the incidental hold placed on your card. While this is a standard practice in the hotel industry, we understand that the amount and the lack of clear communication at the time of check-in were surprising. We will review our procedures to ensure that this is communicated more effectively to our guests in the future. We truly value your feedback and hope that despite the letdowns you experienced, you might consider giving Sentinel another chance in the future. Please feel free to contact us directly so that we can ensure your next stay is more in line with your expectations and the true Sentinel experience. Sincerely, The Sentinel Team

Save the $ and book elsewhere. The photos of the rooms are incredible, kudos to quality of the photography it makes the room look huge. In reality they aren’t and the executive king suites look out over a roof.
Have stayed at multiple hotels in downtown this felt about 30-40% overpriced and the towels had something to be desired go over $300 a night.

Dear Andy E, Thank you for sharing your thoughts about your recent stay at Sentinel. We're genuinely sorry to hear that our historic hotel did not meet your expectations. As a cherished landmark dating back to 1909, Sentinel has welcomed generations of guests who have enjoyed its unique charm and character. We understand that not every boutique hotel can cater to every guest's preferences, and it's unfortunate that your experience was not as you had hoped. Our team takes great pride in capturing the essence of our rooms through photography, though we acknowledge that the actual room size and views may differ, especially in a bustling downtown area like Portland where the city has grown around us. Your feedback regarding the room size, view, and towel quality is invaluable, and we will certainly take it into consideration as we strive to enhance our guest experience. We hope you had the chance to explore some of the vibrant attractions and dining options that make downtown Portland so special. Thank you once again for your review. We wish you many wonderful travels ahead and hope you find a hotel that perfectly suits your needs in the future. Warm regards, William

Stayed for 2 nights at the Sentinel. On the positive side, the room was beautiful and comfortable. On the negative side, our room was over the light rail tracks and the train was noisy all day and night. We also felt annoyed by the $29 a night amenity charge, when the amenities were no more than wi-fi (which wasn't great) and a glass of wine in plastic cup. The parking charge of $66 a night also seemed excessive.

Dear lucillec506, Thank you sincerely for taking the time to share your feedback and leave us a review on TripAdvisor. We truly appreciate your input, as it helps us continually improve our services. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the streetcar noise. Being centrally located in Downtown Portland, Oregon, we benefit from excellent public transportation options that allow easy access to various parts of the city. Rest assured, the streetcar service ceases at midnight, ensuring a peaceful night’s rest. Regarding our guest amenity fee, we’re delighted to offer more than just complimentary Wi-Fi and our delightful wine hour. Our amenities include access to our state-of-the-art fitness center, a Well&Fit Kit, bike rentals, complementary water in the lobby, and freshly brewed coffee, and much more. As for parking, we understand that the $62 nightly fee may seem steep. However, it aligns with other hotels in the area. Providing valet parking involves renting a parking garage and compensating attendants who ensure the safety of your vehicle. These costs are essential for maintaining the quality of our services. Once again, thank you for choosing Sentinel. We hope to welcome you back in the future. Should you have any further questions or requests, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Warm regards, William

Our stay wasn’t the getaway we had hoped for. When I booked the 5-Star rated Sentinel for a 3 night getaway, I thought I got a great deal for a luxury stay. I imagine it was once 5-Stars but times have changed and in my opinion the hotel hasn’t kept up. It is very dated, poor touch up paint work, stained window drapes that barely move. The windows are old so you hear the train all night.
The biggest issue came Saturday night. They have supposedly “unrelated business” attached to their lobby that literally operated like a night club into the early hours of the morning. Around midnight our entire hotel was evacuated for a “faulty alarm” and we went stumbling down 6 flights of stairs to enter this ridiculous night club scene that carried on and ignored the alarms. Probably because they couldn’t hear them over the ear shattering music they were playing. I asked the guy at the desk to turn it down and he simply said, “it is a separate business” and clearly didn’t have the guts to tell them to respect the entire hotel standing in the lobby, hallway and on the street.
You guys need to think about the clientele you are trying to attract. Knock a couple of stars off if you want to have a nightclub crowd that might enjoy a faulty alarm system that leads them to a party. You also need to have better measures in place for freak incidents like this. Step 1: turn the f’ing music down.

Response from William Strickland, Guest Services / Front Office at Sentinel
Responded May 28, 2024
Dear timhY9078SR, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at Sentinel. We’re sorry to hear that your stay didn’t meet your expectations. We value all feedback as it helps us improve and provide the best service possible. We want to clarify that our fire alarm system is not faulty. It detected smoke and, as a safety measure, the alarm had to remain on until the fire department provided an all clear. Our top priority is the safety of our guests, and we’re glad the system did its job in ensuring everyone was informed. Regarding the vibrant establishment, Fortune, it’s a separate business loved by locals and travellers alike. While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it’s a remarkable place that many of our guests cherish. Sentinel is a unique hotel with over 100 years of history and is registered as a national landmark. We take great pride in preserving its rich history and letting it shine as one of Portland’s most beloved hotels. We regret that you didn’t bring up your concerns to our staff during your stay. We would have been more than happy to assist you. Unfortunately, there’s very little we can do after the fact. Lastly, we understand that emotions can run high, but we believe it’s important to maintain a respectful language. It’s not necessary or appropriate to use foul language. We hope you’ll consider giving us another chance to provide the 5-star experience you were expecting. We’re committed to making Sentinel a place where everyone can enjoy their stay. Best regards, William

Hello,
The rooms on the west wing need key cards to access the guest floors. These rooms include Studio Terrace Suite, Bridgetown Parlor Suite, Executive King, Executive Queen Terrace, and some Premier King rooms.
The rooms on the east wing (most rooms) do not need key cards to access. These rooms include Deluxe King, Deluxe Queen, Premier Double, Cornier Premier King, Parlor Suite, and most Premier King rooms.
I hope this information is helpful.

Yes we are! It is under a 10 minute walk to the Crystal Ballroom from the hotel.
Self parking on the street, some metered.
Our deluxe rooms are located on multiple wings of the building. This means some are city view while some face into a light well. If you call the hotel we can make sure the room type you book is exactly what you are looking for.
we took a cab; 20 minutes probably about $35. But if you don't have too much luggage the light rail line is no more than a block from the hotel. very very close. we used it a lot and if doing this again would use it to travel from the airport. google Portland light rail and you'll locate their website which will tell you everything you need to know.
