With its iconic food cart gatherings, anti-establishment murals and even a 24-Hour Church of Elvis, its no wonder the mantra of this town is "Keep Portland Weird." And right in the heart of it all you'll find Hotel Rose, a funky, fun and "oh-so-Portland" boutique hotel located directly across from Tom McCall Waterfront Park on the beautiful Willamette River. From shopping to dining to outdoor recreation, there's no better home base for exploring the odd, the exquisite and the just plain outrageous. Staypineapple at Hotel Rose.

Staypineapple, Hotel Rose, Downtown emerges as a charming choice, with guests often lauding its quirky pineapple theme and the hospitable, inviting ambiance. The hotel's amenities, including the much-appreciated complimentary drinks and pet-friendly policies, receive positive remarks, although the additional fees for amenities and parking are a point of contention for many.
While the cleanliness and spaciousness of the rooms are consistently praised, discomfort arises from the lack of adequate temperature control. Service is generally seen as friendly and helpful, but there have been noted inconsistencies.

Detailed Reviews
The staff here was wonderful, but the rooms were subpar. The hotel is very old and you cannot control the temperature in your room. There is no central air system. It was sticky and hot. The woman at the front desk had a box fan brought up to our room, which was very kind, but didn't help much. The soap dispensers are all built into the walls, and the shower gel & sink hand soap were switched in my room. The room is also full of random souvenirs for purchase? Felt like I was flying on Spirit Airline - being nickel & dimed the whole way. Bedding was clean but European style so a tad weird. Probably wouldn't return if I'm ever in Portland again.

Very different vibe from the other hotel chains - very attentive and friendly staff, environmentally conscious and clean - wish we could have stayed longer. The location is very central (located in downtown Portland) with easy access (walking) to restaurants. Parking for personal cars is available for a charge ($20 per day) within the hotel premises.

Driving down the coast trying to get home. So glad our previous hotel cancelled on us due to Covid etc because this was a great last minute find and super dog friendly. Not a great time to be in Portland during Covid & protest. However, best part of this hotel is that it's literally across the street from the water and grassy walkway. We got a water view room, but be aware that the view is covered by big trees (still a good view). Other views include freeway or buildings. My husband LOVED the European blankets (2 twin blankets) and they were so fluffy and warm, especially since the AC was pretty cold.
During this time, it's expected that eating areas are closed and breakfast is not provided, but having a grab bag would have been nice. However, they do provide free bottles of water (just ask front desk if you need more) and doggy biscuits are in a jar by the elevator along with welcome container of doggy cookies. They provided a water bowl, poopy bag, & dog bed. They also had pineapple sugar cookies at the front desk.
They were also very helpful. We took our dog to Mt. Tabor & Sellwood River Dog Park where she got pretty dirty. Unfortunately our room didn't have a bathtub, but the front desk was nice enough to hook up their water hose in the parking lot & let us rinse our dog. Really appreciated it.

The staff at this hotel was super helpful and attentive, but the hotel itself is terrible!
It's rated as a 3 star hotel and a 2 star rating would be generous. Our room had no carpet and many times we could hear guests on the floor above walking around. It also just made it feel dirty walking around without carpeting.
While the hotel lobby isn't bad the 4th floor where our room was looked like it was at least 20 years old. Dark, dingy, and not welcoming or comforting at all.
The toilet seat was stained yellow probably from too harsh of chemicals to clean it. The ice bucket leaked everywhere and the refrigerator pooled water at the bottom. Our USB charging pineapple port was broken and we had to request a replacement (which did work). The comforter inside the duvet was very dirty and discolored and clearly not washed. Also the design of the sliding bathroom door was awful. If the bathroom was open you couldn't access the closet and vice versa.
The location may have been great 10 years ago but in the current state of Portland especially downtown it's a poor location. While close to the river, there is construction blocking you from getting to the water and one block over is one of the cities larger homeless tent areas. Many times walking to or from our hotel we did not feel comfortable because they were constantly walking around our hotel and many were clearly not mentally well. It didn't make for a safe feeling.
Last, this hotel required a daily "Resort Fee" for what I can't tell you. It in no way is a resort or play I would ever return to. What you do get for that fee is free bottled water, and $10 credit at the snack bar each day. We arrived Saturday and most of the better options listed on the menu were out. When I asked about those items again Sunday, they said it was unlikely they would be receiving the shipment to restock that day. When I check back Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday after no items had been replaced and there was even less options. Basically it was over priced junk food you could get for less than half the cost if you bought it yourself. We also had issues staying connected to the "Free Wifi" that was also part of the resort fee.
I don't think I could have been more unhappy with the state of this hotel. If I could have got my money back and changed hotels I would have.

The room had very high quality linens and high end bathroom with really nice products like shampoo and lotion. Very clean and up to date. The bed was super comfortable. The staff were vert friendly and helpful. Everything was top quality except for the air flow and temperature in the room. It was hot and stagnant and, maybe there was a problem with our thermostat but it didn't appear that there was air conditioning. Despite the comfortable bed, we didn't sleep well at all because it was just too hot and stuffy. We'll definitely consider staying again the next time we come to Portland but we'll check to see if there is air conditioning first.

First, this review is three years over due. It just dawned on me that I had not written a review about my stay. This hotel is right at the water front, which has an amusement park a few blocks away, on the river side. If you like to walk, you can walk the river pathway, taking in the sights of the river, and its' two nearby bridges. The hotel is centered perfectly to take in many sights. It is also close to the subway system, which I took from the airport, to get to the hotel, and did the same for going back to the airport. The rooms are nice and I had zero issues with anything in the room. The small restaurant in the hotel does not have an elaborate menu, but it will keep you fed. There are other restaurants that you can get to, if you want a more robust menu & atmosphere. Tours do stop at the hotel to pick you up, and if you are adventurous, there is a Segway tour group, about 3-4 blocks from the hotel, which takes you on a riding tour around the area. If you are going to travel on the TriMet transit system, I would recommend that you get their transit card, as it will be much cheaper, and easier to ride. You can get this over the internet.

Traveling during Covid was already stressful, but we had no choice, it was to pick up new equipment to keep our family business afloat. We wound up 4 hours ahead of schedule, driving from Tucson, AZ to Portland, OR straight through. We called and spoke to a friendly staff member, who assured us that even if a room wasn't ready when we got there, to come on in and they would help us the best they could. Well, we arrived early, way early. The gentleman at the counter checked us in, got us parking, and gave us a complimentary upgrade because our room was not ready and he could no doubt see that we were exhausted. Nothing was a problem, he made everything easy and checking in felt safe and stress free. We couldn't be more grateful. Forgot my razor, he got me one. Needed an extra towel? Done, lickity split. Didn't know where to go for food, great suggestions. Checkout was a breeze, no signatures and using other people's pens. On a side note, had I realized how dog friendly this hotel is, I would have gladly brought my pups. Dog treats when you walk in. No carpeted floors. I watched several owners with dogs and the staff treated them better than they treated me! Thank you for making an unpredictable and terrifying time easier.

WOW! Thank you Terri! I was so proud and thrilled to read how well our team took care of you during your recent trip to Portland. I will be sure to share your kudos with our team. We really appreciate your feedback - it is very reassuring! We've been working so hard to adjust to this "new normal" to ensure both guest and employee safety without losing the spirit of customer service and still wanting guests to be able to enjoy their travels and the great city of Portland. We hope to see you back soon - and PLEASE bring your puppers! As you mentioned.....we are a little dog obsessed around here. Thank you again for sharing your experience with us and other travelers. We really liked everything about this hotel, it was clean and comfortable, not super quirky but more personality than a chain. We picked it because of overall price, inexpensive/convenient parking compared to other hotels downtown, and a great location for walking. The people who checked us in and out were friendly and helpful. There were options for things we didn't have time for this visit, such as bringing our dogs along, or using the hotel bikes. And we had a tasty dinner at the restaurant! Our only complaint was that the big window (which did have an amazing view of the park and river), wasn't very sound proof like it would be in a newer building. I was woken up at 4am by 2 garbage trucks below having a convention of some kind, and then couldn't go back to sleep because there seemed to be a train that wasn't moving but just blowing its horn for about 1/2 hr. In the day time, the traffic noise was noticeably loud as well. But over all, I'm not even deducting a star for that because I felt this hotel is doing it's best to please and the location is just noisy. I expect we'll be back with our dogs (there is a fee, but it's cheaper than our pet sitter). Did I mention the towels are extra fluffy and the duvets are warm and comfy?

+1
This hotel prides itself on being very clean, very comfortable, and very dog friendly. It is. Amenities are also very cute and give it just 'a little bit more', including sugar cookies at the front desk, a $10 voucher for the convenience store area in the lobby (I got a meat + cheese platter), free bottled water, and if you are bringing a dog, they will provide you with bowls for your animals food and water, a dog bed for the night, and pet waste disposal bags. The quote Naked Experience at Hotel Rose is supposed to allow you to sleep naked in their wonderful linens. They are indeed great, and if you are sleeping next to a partner, there are two downy comforters on the bed for both of you. However if like me you are single and like to starfish in the bed, you will find that these comforters are just slightly too narrow to cover. Another great feature of this room was that it was pleasantly cool upon entry, unlike many hotel rooms which are stiflingly hot and that is not conducive to sleep. As this was a late night emergency stay while a loved one was in the ER, I was VERY appreciative that I could just collapse in a heap. The waterfront is just across the street, a lovely place to walk your canine friend but also this means that you will hear the noises of downtown nightlife including nearby homeless encampments. If things get too rowdy outside, the front desk has earplugs.
The floors are also uncarpeted which is great for people bringing dogs, however the coolness of the room means that the floors are ICY. Like many dog owners do, I remove my shoes upon entering the room upon coming in from the outside because I never know what I may have tracked in during our walks. Hotel Rose kindly provides a nice bathrobe for your use while staying but no slippers so bring your own or freeze your toes. (Also they will provide a toothbrush if you have forgotten yours, but oddly no toothpaste.)

While this hotel is in a good location and you can get a room with a balcony overlooking the river, that's all it has to recommend it. Everything has gone severely downhill. The first night we were awakened at 1 am by a party next door - it seemed they were trying to open the connecting door between our rooms. Learning that the same party was staying there the next night, we asked to be moved and were very kindly accommodated. However, we discovered there is NO HEAT in the hotel. Our room was chilly and the bathroom had no heat and no vent. Extremely uncomfortable showering for our meeting that morning. There is also no AC, very poor insulation - we could hear the people in the room above us and the folks next door. The web site says they can help you with a list of restaurants that deliver since theirs is closed. Not so. We couldn't get a simple pizza delivered for 90 minutes from a shop two blocks away.
Overall, a very disappointing experience although we were accommodated by a room rate reduction and a waiver on the parking fees. We've been coming here for several years and were let down seriously by this visit.
