The lobby is absolutely beautiful, and will take you back in time. There is a little "store" located by the front desk where you can purchase coffee, drinks and snacks. The front desk employees are very friendly and nice. We were given our key cards for our room, and took the elevator to our floor. Our room was very clean and nicely decorated. The spacious bedroom was separate from the rest of the room. It included two large beds, a large television and large windows with light-blocking shades. The bathroom was also large, and included soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion and a blow dryer. A separate wet bar is near the bathroom area and includes a mini fridge and a sink/faucet. There were two large towels, two hand towels and two wash cloths in the bathroom. We needed more towels for our family of four, so we simply called down to the front desk, and they brought more to our room. After spending 1-1/2 hours in our room, we found that the room was not getting any warmer, despite the fact that we kept turning up the thermometer, so we again called down to the front desk, and they immediately sent a maintenance person to see if something was wrong with the heater. The maintenance person was so nice and friendly, and informed us that the HVAC system in our room wasn't working, and that they would immediately move us to another room. We moved to a room two doors down, and the room was just as lovely as the first, and the heater worked well.
We enjoyed an evening reception that included two alcoholic drinks per person, vegetables, cheese, crackers and dip. The reception area is decorated very nicely, and the bartender made me one of the best Lemon Drop Martinis that I've ever tasted.
Our college-aged children wanted to go for a swim, so we headed down to the pool area. On the way, we met another family of four on their way back from the pool. They told us to stay away from the pool as there was a gentleman in the pool with five screaming children and a dog. We kind of laughed off their comments as we have a family of five, and have always travelled with our children. We were a little shocked as we got closer to the pool area as we started hearing a dog yipping loudly. We opened the door to the pool area, and there really was a dog in a crate by the pool yipping very loudly. The children were lovely, and we didn't mind them having a wonderful time in the pool, but the dog's barks were deafening. We left, and walked to the front desk to ask if dogs were permitted in the pool area. We spoke with Wade, and he was so friendly and nice, and told us that dogs were definitely not allowed in the pool area. We decided to call it a night, and spend time with our family in our room before bed.
At around 11:00 pm, we headed for bed. For the next 1-1/2 hours, we heard children running back and forth (loudly) in the room above ours. It was very hard to get to sleep. However, once we did, the comfortable beds, linens and pillows lulled us to sleep. We were awakened the next morning by the same children running back and forth across the room above us. After a delicious full breakfast the next morning in the same lovely room where we enjoyed the evening reception, we went to talk to Wade at the front desk.
We explained to Wade that we didn't get much sleep the night before or that morning because of the constant running of the children, and asked for an upgraded room. Wade was so understanding and accomodating. He apologized for the noise, the cold room the night before, and for the experience at the pool, upgraded our room to one double the size of our previous room, and waived one night's parking fee. We were beyond pleased. Wade truly went out of his way to make this stay perfect, despite a few minor problems.
I'm not sure what our new room was called, but it had windows all the way around it. It was as large as a small apartment! It was beautiful furnished. Again, we attended the evening reception with our college-aged children, met new friends, and spent a nice day in Portland.
Wade told us a little history about the hotel, including the fact that Elvis Presley once stayed there.
We enjoyed visiting VooDoo Doughnuts just a short walk from the hotel. Although there is a heavy police presence at VooDoo Doughnuts, we felt completely safe at all times.
We will definitely stay at this hotel again, and I will recommend it to my family and friends. It's in the perfect location for just about everything. Thank you, Wade, for everything you did to make our stay absolutely perfect. And to the woman bartender (I'm so sorry that I forgot your name), you make the BEST lemon drop martinis. Thank you for going out of your way to make them for me.
Note: for some context, our Portland trip was in early March before things shut down because of the Covid Pandemic. It seemed business as usual in the area, but we personally hand sanitized a lot and didn’t touch surfaces if possible, and washed/ sanitized if unavoidable. Neither Social Distancing or masks were a thing yet in the places we ate and shopped at.
Our week long stay early last March at the Embassy Suites was part of Delta vacation package - plus we got points for staying there. The property has a beautiful lobby and wonderful staff, especially the doormen at the main entrance.
Check in was easy and the front desk folks were nice. I had called the hotel directly about two weeks before our trip to request a quiet room away from the elevator and was told no problem. Imagine my surprise to find that our room was just steps away from it! We were tired and figured we would see how it went. For the most part it was OK but it was weird that my request was completely ignored and we were put near the elevator!
Our King suite was roomy but the bathroom was just average in size. There was a fridge, pod type coffeemaker and microwave. Napkins at the coffee station would have been handy. More closet space or hooks to hang coats would have been nice, too. Bed was comfy but pillows were not. We kept hanging our used towels up to conserve washings per hotel suggestion, but some of them would be removed anyway. We also had to keep asking for washcloths because while we were a family of three, for a couple of days, only two were provided. The windows are not soundproof and street noises can be loud if the boneheads with loud cars are rumbling up and down the road. Our room was several floors up and away from the street but we could still hear some racket. There are plenty of outlets for charging phones, etc.
Breakfast was plentiful and there were many options to choose from including an omelet station. However, each day had the same items. Staff seemed to be cleaning surfaces a lot which was good considering the CV-19 pandemic.
Our room was fairly clean but I did find dental floss on the bathroom floor just after we walked in the room. Gross!
We had a car rental but rather than pay >$40 a night for parking, we found a less expensive garage a couple blocks away. There are a few to choose from.
The area around the hotel has a few homeless people but no one ever bothered us. Voodoo Doughnuts, Mother’s Bistro (our favorite), Kingsland Diner, Bijou, and others, are all nearby and very good. On Saturdays and Sundays there is a market just a few streets over.
I would stay here again given the location and beautiful building.
Every encounter with the staff was extremely pleasant, and the room was far better than I could have hoped for. This property will likely be the one I stay at on future trips to Portland.
Overnight rate for parking was expensive, but overall hotel was an amazing value, especially when you consider the delicious complimentary breakfast.
The room did not have much a view...so...my sister and I walked across the street to city view restaurant and had lunch. Nothing in the area compares to that place if you want a nice view of Portland while dining at a not so expensive price tag.
As for the local, nearby homeless, "don't bother them, and they won't bother you".
I stayed in a loft suite which is now my favorite of all the rooms. It was updated, had tall ceilings due to the bed being on a mezzanine and was the perfect place to gather with my editor at night. Bed was perfect and the room was really clean. I also saw my editor's room and she was very pleased.
Security is great - the elevators don't work without a key card and the valet always hit the "door open" button when I walked toward the front door after being out on a walk. Breakfast on the lower level was delicious, especially the omelettes. There were plenty of other breakfast items that were refreshed often and there were cards on the tables to indicate which were recently sanitized (turn over when you leave so they can reclean them). I didn't use the pool, but peeked in and will bring a suit next time. It was quite nice and just next to the exercise room.
We had one glitch - a front desk person who needed more training created a stressful check-in experience. While I won't go into details, I reached out to the hotel and the hotel management followed up quickly. They also took the time to seek me out and apologize and make things right. Afterwards I always saw that young lady working beside a supervisor.
There are really good restaurants in walking distance. I tried the Asian noodle restaurant across the street, Old Town Pizza, Lechon, and Mama Mia Trattoria. All were within walking distance (5 minutes or less) and delicious (Lechon has small plates for sharing and was my favorite).
Beware that there are some homeless camps downtown but that's the nature of many large downtown cities. I had no problem walking the area at night and felt safe doing so.
Would definitely recommend to peers.
