Bear Hotel Havant is steeped in historic charm, with its lively bar scene often mentioned as a standout feature. However, the atmosphere receives mixed reviews, and some guests feel there's room for improvement. While many appreciate the clean and quaint rooms, others are troubled by noise, datedness, and maintenance issues.
The value proposition has faced criticism for pricey meals and breakfast concerns, despite the hotel's commendable cleanliness and praised amenities like complimentary breakfast and parking. Service experiences vary, with reports of both friendliness and unprofessionalism.

Detailed Reviews
The hotel needs a refurb, and some of the staff do need a lesson in customer service however the hotel does what it’s says on the tin. It’s good value I paid £81 for 2 nights including breakfast so £40.50 a night for 2 people. This is very cheap for what you get, the breakfast was amazing with hot and cold options. The room itself was old but had everything you needed and it was clean. The lady on reception does need a talking too because I can see how some people would be offended with her straight to the point attitude but all other staff encounters were lovely especially the Scottish girl in the restaurant bar she was fantastic. Some of the reviews on here are too harsh especially when the hotel is cheap. I can understand if you were paying £100 a night but your not. If you want a cheap hotel that gives you everything you need then this is the one, if you want something a bit newer or have more thrills then you’ll need to pay for it so book something more expensive. I will be returning

Car Park was not clearly obtainable. You have to go round the back streets and easily missed.
All booked in ok, but when we went to our room, there was a lady with children booked already in the room. I went back down to reception and advised of the situation and was told they hadnt had anyone booked on the system in that room. Could have been worse, someone could have been getting changed! Given another room, which was large, but nothing like the photographs advertised on their website, but this is bazes solely on the room allocated. Beds were very soft, to the point that it was not pleasant. We were givwn room 11 and were next to a room which said private, but during the night an alarm went off, you could hear the door opening and slamming during the night. Were not aware of any fire exit instructions, as we waited to see if this was a fire alarm. Room was cool, and slept with a window open, but half way through the night all 3 of us woke up so hot and the room was stuffy. Turns out the heating came on during the night which was not expexted. Breakfast.....not the best. Hash browns were so fried and lacked potato, when you tried to cut them, they just became a crumble. Staff were lovely. Overall, i would recommend not to pay for breakfast as there is a cafe literally round the corner, and is open on Sundays. Yoh also have a Waitrose round the corner. One night stay with breakfast was £86 for 3 adults. I would not book to stay again, although staff were lovely and if you are a dog owner, dogs are allowed, but was overpriced for the experience.

We stayed here for 4 nights, it was not the best . The hotel was dirty and in need of a make over ,there was a strange smell all upstairs like a musty damp smell . All the carpets were taped together at some point stained and dirty. The room was large but the TV was so tiny and so far away we struggled to hear it ridiculous. The bathroom was not the cleanest the taps and shower were difficult to use, the bathroom floor was marked and the glasses that we were supposed to use to drink out of had been left by the previous guests they were filthy. We left them out hoping the cleaners would replace them but the just put them back, in the world we live in now this not acceptable. The bed was the most uncomfortable thing I have slept on it was hard the duvet cover was ripped and there was only one chair to sit on , not much help when there are two of you . Not enough sockets none by the beds . The breakfast was included we only had a cooked breakfast on the first morning as it was disgusting , my sausage was dry and looked like it was cooked the day before, the half if tomato was raw the poached egg was rubbery and over done the bacon was bland the mushrooms were absolutely disgustingthey were frozen and looked black tasted funny , my husband had smoked salmon and scrambled egg the salmon was old and dry . Shame really as there is both an Aldi and a tesco within walking distance why can't things like eggs and mushrooms be cooked fresh, stuck with toast for the rest of the time . Some of the staff were nice but when we checked out we were not asked if everything was OK standard customer service was missing all around . Do not stay here if you have mobility issues there is no lift stairs go off in all directions

Avoid at all costs. I stayed here on business. It is a Greene King hotel and they have some very good ones. They also have The Bear, and I hope they are ashamed. It is grubby, tatty, unwelcoming and smelly. My room (37) stank of stale smoke. As the law has ensured hotel bedrooms have been no smoking for over 12 years, I can only assume it had not had any deep clean for that length of time. It didn’t look as if it had. Breakfast was a help yourself affair, with like warm water in a pump pot to make a cup of tea in a cup with a tea bag, and plastic bags with sliced bread in to make toast. I was approached by a waiter after about 15 minutes but didn’t order anything else. The night before in the bar was simply alarming. The whole place is run down, shabby and unwelcoming. When I mentioned the smell in my bedroom, I was simply told that no one else had complained. Don’t go, don’t stay.

I can, nicely, describe it like the worst experience in a hotel ever. Beside the fact that the room was dirty ( dust in every corner, horrible carpets, walls full of steins), the staff was very rude. Maybe they don’t like foreigners... They should put a sign... 😬
In the morning I was refused to have breakfast with no explanation( I booked it for 9 o’clock - been there at 8:50) and the receptionist/manager started on accusing me of smoking in the room, only because the smoke alarm went on, waking me up as well...

My husband, grandson and I decided on a night away as it’s half term, we booked this hotel through the Greeneking website. We were looking for a suitably old and quirky hotel with some history to it and going by the description and pictures advertising it, it seemed to fit the brief
Unfortunately it did not live up to our expectations, although the bar area is very nice with crackling log fires and pleasant enough staff the hotel itself is about 30 years (I am being kind) beyond its last renovation date and it shows, but whilst that is a minor thing how filthy the hotel is in my opinion is the biggest problem
The carpets are worn through and stained, skirting boards in our room were thick with dust, ditto the windowsills. In the bathroom there was mould on the ceiling, the toilet roll holder was coming away from the wall, and the shaving light above the mirror didn’t work, the actual decor was non-existent, previous wallpaper removed and paint slapped over the remains, no head boards behind the beds, the only plus being that the beds were very comfortable but when we asked at reception for an extra pillow at 19.30 last night we were still waiting for it when we booked out this morning!
I have taken some photo’s to show what I mean, if I were the manager of this establishment I would be on my staff all the time about the cleanliness of the hotel rooms, people shouldn’t have to pay good money for a filthy room

Prompt service, staff all wore PPE and ensured the one way system was followed. Staff made us feel very safe while staying and were able to help us find things in the area.
Hotel was very clean with staff being seen to clean everything that was touched including things touched by young children.
Overall very happy with service and very happy with how well trained staff were at following policies and procedures from the new guidelines!

On arrival great to find plenty of parking included in price especially as hotel is on the edge of a town.
First impression very friendly staff, this continued throughout our stay.
To locate our room we had a lot of stairs to climb and walks along corridors as there is no lift, we had reviewed this prior to going and didn't take large suitcases, hence not a problem for us.
Our room was located in a quite area, room was surprisingly large with a super massive bed, great white bed linen and comfortable pillows, we had 7 wonderful nights sleep. The room itself needs some TLC I won't lie but for the price of the room very good value for money. Bathroom was again in need of TLC but we overlooked that by being supplied with super white fluffy towels.
What made this hotel for us was the fantastic food the restaurant served each night, I think the four of us had almost everything on the menu during our stay and can honestly say enjoyed every meal. A bonus was if you are a guest of the hotel you receive a 20% discount off your food bill. The restaurant is lovely with well spaced out seating arrangement.
There is a bar in the hotel but although we had a couple of drinks there, not really for us, we felt it was more a place for regular members of the public and not families. We would have preferred a lounge where we could have retired to after our evening meal and early afternoon for a drink.
There's a nice outside seating area if the weather is fine.
We would most definitely book this hotel again and would like to thank all the staff for making our stay so pleasant.

We missed the door to number 19 on the route round but backtracked when reaching 21/22
The door looked like a cupboard with steps down into a blast from the mid 50’s
Very tight packed room.
Television was lower than the foot of the bed and the radio / light on the one side of the bed was straight out of the early 40’s ( which was apt as we were going to Goodwood!) the wireless didn’t work but the light did.
No plug for iPhone charging next to the bed.
Bathroom… well you had to hold onto the sink when on the toilet as there was quite a slope. Bath was large and not sloped and sink taps were quite different to one another.
Bed was very comfortable A***
Charged for full breakfast when I only had continental
Typical beautiful old inn needing much updating to get close to being re-bookable
Location was fine.
Didn’t get a chance to use the bar unfortunately

Stayed here recently as a surprise treat from my husband. Immediately felt at ease as it was visible that all covid restrictions were implemented with a one way system throughout and the floors clearly labelled. It was evident that the staff were fully supportive in keeping this a comfortable and safe environment to stay. The staff were lovely and very friendly making it an enjoyable stay for us and we’re there for us throughout our stay if we needed anything! Thankyou!
