Unico Hotel Riviera Maya garners high marks for its cleanliness and meticulously kept grounds, with a few exceptions. The range of amenities, including luxurious rooms, diverse dining, and tranquil pools, is frequently lauded by guests, as is the hotel's beautiful beachfront location. The attentive and warm service contributes to an overall positive atmosphere, though some guests find the noise levels disruptive. While the ocean views and modern room features are popular, there are occasional maintenance concerns. Despite the scenic setting, the value proposition is questioned by some who find it overpriced.

Wonderful staff who made me feel safe and cared for despite traveling alone. There were mostly couples with a few groups at the resort but I still felt safe. Having a responsive personal concierge person made up for having to make dinner reservations. There was a large clearing without rocks to walk out to the ocean comfortably and they were great about clearing seaweed. I loved how there were different pools where I could choose how social I wanted be. I especially loved the tub in the balcony with the daily bubble bath powder and bath salts so I could enjoy my time rain or shine. I also loved the little personalized touches that were included, such as choosing an aromatherapy scent, a pillow menu, and personalizing your own aftersun balm (or a few other products) at the spa. There is a mixology class that is included but has limited seats. Spa services were listed at various extravagant prices in the in-room tablet and online but were actually a third of the price when I asked directly at the spa. I suspect this is because they try to incentivize you to do the 90 minute timeshare spiel to get a free/discounted spa service. The hydrotherapy session was a solid experience for the price. The Esencia massage was a gentle oil massage; great for relaxation but I would book something else if you want more pressure. The signature cocktails were so well-balanced and delicious! If I go back, I want to make time to try all the cocktails from al the menus and bars. Overall, food was solid. I would recommend sticking to the Mexican food because the Italian was generic, the nigiri was not fresh, and the pan-asian food was not for my palate. Mura House seemed like it was the most difficult reservation to get. Best breakfast was at Mi Carisa, best lunch was at Unico 2087, and best dinner was at Cueva Siete.

Amazing facilities all around.
Starting with the rooms, the bed was heaven and the room was decorated in a gorgeous manner with the smallest attention to detail cared for. The balconies either have a swim up pool, or a balcony soaking tub - which was an experience I didn't know I needed.
The staff takes care to visit your room twice during the day, once earlier in the day to clean up, and second later in the day to 'prep' the room for bed. This includes leaving two delicious little chocolates on a tray by the pillows and moving the slippers next to the bed. Such a sweet little touch.
The grounds were gorgeous and well maintained. The pools were all clean and had plenty of space to relax. The servers who brought drinks and food around the property were attentive and service was quick.
The restaurants were amazing and had some of the most delicious food I have ever tasted. Some of the portions run on the smaller side, I assume as they are taking account for people ordering multiple things. My favorites were the 20.87 breakfast buffet, which included everything you could imagine, and Cueva, their Mexican food concept.
Pro tip: bring about $30 a day in ones and fives to tip the staff while you are there. The resort, food and alcohol are all-inclusive - but it's always nice to let the staff know that they are appreciated. We've also found that they give you quicker drinks this way :)

This was our 5th visit to Unico and our best experience yet! We booked private transportation through the resort and they were waiting with a Suburban as soon as we reached the transport area at the airport. We stayed in a one-bedroom Estancia suite in Building 8 and it was spectacular and so quiet and peaceful. Housekeeping kept our room spotless and we loved the turndown service.

We had a daily cabana with our membership and the drink and food service was always prompt. We ate lunch at the pool most days and particularly enjoyed the shrimp tacos. There was always something fun happening, between all the water spin classes and DJs, etc. There is a quiet pool available for those who prefer that and it's also a lovely spot with plenty of chairs.

We ate at all 4 restaurants, three of them twice. To our surprise, 2087 was the highlight this time - in the past it wasn't our favorite. I had the rack of pork and it was just delicious, with tequila-fired pineapple on top. Everyone also loved their steaks and of course our perennial favorite, the creamy poblano soup. We also were delighted by the ice cream flight that came with its own cart! We did teppanyaki and a la carte at Mura House and both were excellent - the sashimi was on point for the sashimi lover in our party and I was impressed by the Pad Thai. Mi Carisa was delicious as always, particularly the carbonara, risottos and carpaccio. Cueve Siete is good but continues to disappoint a bit in terms of the main entrees - they haven't changed in quite a few visits and were delivered missing promised items, like no beans with the meatballs. However, the appetizers remain delicious and they definitely have our favorite specialty cocktails.

We also had two chef lunches in our cabana and they blew us out of the water both times - the steak with gorgonzola sauce was literally fork tender and the churros were the best I've ever had.

Between both couples we visited the spa 5 times and our therapies were all really good, although the hydrotherapy is a bit cramped and needs renovation and probably more staff. I had a relaxing massage from Karen that was particularly lovely and I recommend asking for her. I am hoping Unico takes some pointers from their sister resort in Cabo to upgrade the hydrotherapy.

The absolute highlight of the trip was our butler team, Isreal and Roger - we have been to a LOT of Hard Rock properties and they are a top-2 team ever. They arranged literally everything I wanted ahead of time and made the trip my favorite birthday trip ever in 7 years of doing them. I cannot speak highly enough of their service and you must request them if you have butler service available to you.

Unico is such a special place for us, from the painted hats and craft making to the dedication to showcasing local artists and food. We will be back again and again.

I recently stayed at the Unico Hotel, expecting an exceptional experience based on my reservation, which included an ocean-view room and a range of personalized services—such as a fully stocked bar, gluten-free snacks, custom pillows, and specific aromatherapy options.
Unfortunately, upon arrival, we were disappointed to discover that our room had neither an ocean view nor even a partial view. Furthermore, none of the requested services that had been confirmed in advance were provided. When I raised these issues with the staff, my concerns were dismissed, and my requests were outright denied. It felt as though we were sold an experience that was never delivered.
The quality of the food during lunch and dinner was subpar and certainly did not meet the 5-star standard advertised by the hotel. The sushi was the worst I've ever tasted, and the food at the Grill restaurant was poorly prepared and served on unclean plates. We also encountered a serious issue with food labeling, discovering that items labeled as allergen-free were not, raising significant concerns about our safety. It was deeply disappointing to feel that we were served such substandard food.
The cleanliness of our room and the hotel in general fell far short of what one would expect from a luxury hotel. Additionally, the pool and beach areas lacked essential amenities such as towels and food and drink service, which are part of the all-inclusive experience we paid for. After raising concerns, we were given one stained and ripped towel to share.
The beach at Unico Hotel is disappointing, as there is only one accessible section, and accessing it requires navigating a treacherous path of sharp rocks. This rocky terrain not only makes entry challenging but also resulted in injuries for us during our attempts to enjoy the shoreline. The lack of proper access and safety measures detracts significantly from the overall experience, making it difficult to relax and fully enjoy the beach atmosphere.
To make matters worse, the noise level at night was unbearable, further detracting from our experience. As a hotel that claims to be one of the leading 5-star establishments in the world, it failed to deliver on all fronts. The front desk staff was particularly disrespectful, adding to our frustration.
This will be my last visit to Unico Hotel, and likely my last trip to Mexico. If you enjoy crowded pool areas filled with rowdy guests drinking cheap alcohol and peeing in the pool, then this may be the place for you. Otherwise, I recommend seeking accommodations elsewhere. Despite being advertised as a 5-star hotel, it is far from that standard. If you are accustomed to the luxury of places like the Ritz or Four Seasons, you will find Unico Hotel to be a disappointing experience.

Special mention to Daniela, our Local Host, she was excellent, very kind, and helpful. Also, Sergio a server, was wonderful, knowledgeable, and friendly.

While the food and servers at the restaurants were exceptional, the front desk staff at check-in was extremely subpar and the bartenders seemed bothered to assist guests during our stay.

Issues:

- Upon arrival, we were told the room our family booked "did not exist” on the property, which we later found was not true. It seems they may have given our room away or overbooked. Very disappointing, since we had already paid for the room we selected.

- Resort pools close at 7 pm. Which makes the advertised 24-hour swim-up pool rooms so enticing. However, we were told we had to exit the private swim-up pools by 11 pm, so someone could come “clean” the pool. No cleaning of the pool happened.

- During the mixology class we purchased separately, we were told we could find the exact drink/ingredients we used during the class at Bar Balam, which was not the case. The Paloma was squirt and tequila, the margarita was a basic mixer, tequila, and tajin. No housemade daily juices, no special housemade tres chili salt. Not an end all be all, but the drinks from certain bartenders were undrinkable.

Bummer: They provide free sunhats with custom painting, though painting is only available on certain days SatMonWed and they only take so many hats a day. We didn’t make the cut during our 4-day stay. We left the hats. The free spa products they offer to customize your stay; we were told, that what was in our room was what we got. Which we later found was not true.

All this to say, there was mention from several staff members that they, sadly, do not get paid or tipped very well by management or guests, at a 5-star $$$$ resort. Low pay is very telling and could explain the inconsistencies in the quality of service. We all felt we needed to over-generously tip staff to compensate for the lack of liveable pay wages. I will admit I engaged in these conversations, but it does make for a yuck feeling during a luxury vacation when the wait staff feels underpaid and underappreciated. I do not blame them for telling their truths.

Management teams need to remember they could NOT do it without their staff.

If you only care about the food; not the experience, this location is for you. But if you want a higher quality experience, I would keep looking. It is safe to say we will be booking elsewhere from now on.

The most memorable part of our stay was the service by the staff, right from bellman to restaurant severs, pool staff, table runners, towel staff - they all are extremely helpful. You can see their dedication at work by the way they carefully take care of the property.
In my experience Unico does listen to the criticism that they received in the past feedbacks and has improved upon them.
I had heard complaints about timeshare agents being pushy during reservations process, but for us, they were very gentle and in-fact they gave us lot of helpful info about the property. We ended up declining the offer, but at no point they seemed pushy or annoying.
Another complain I heard was availability of towels and beach/pool seats. We did not feel this to be that much of an issue. People usually reserve the pool/ beach seats early in the morning by keeping some of their items (books/swimming gear/shoes) on the seat. We are morning people, so we usually got up around 7 am and used to find good location empty pool / beach seats.
The beach area to the north side of the property is free of rocks and very serene!

Standard Mexico all inclusive. On-site service was very good and attentive, but if you’re planning on using the “points” given to you at check in, think again and be aware that if you’re trying to use points on a massage or golf, the base price starts higher, effectively just bringing the inflated place back down to a still inflated price.
Couples massage $940 but with your room points only $640! It’s a racket.

We decided to use our points on golf with partner Único hotel The Hard Rock. After paying $100 taxi to get to $200 round of golf per person, we found out the greens had just been punched! Awful! We shared this with the Único/Hard Rock concierge, Laura, who booked the round and told us she didn’t know the greens had just been aerated. If she doesn’t know, who would? She apologized but offered zero concession for the overpriced golf and punched greens that any golfer would want to be made aware of or offered a discount.

Lastly, the coati animals are everywhere and aggressive. The will eat your food right off your plate sitting next to you at the pool, and bring all their family and friends too. It was off putting and a little scary, and led to their feces being everywhere around the resorts, including the hallways right outside your room. Some
Poops had been there for days, even though we alerted the staff. Be prepared to dodge poop walking home from dinner in your hallways.

Wouldn’t recommend this resort and will not return.

Dear amalinoswski, Thank you so much for taking the time to share with us your thorough review about your recent visit to our hotel. We are deeply sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations due to the situations you express in your post. We regret to hear that you felt our prices at the Spa are inflated, we have different options, promotions, which compared to other hotels are cheaper and accessible considering that Playa del Carmen is an expensive touristic area, due to this, our spa is one of the most important and recognized. Regarding the coatis, we are in the middle of the jungle and due to civil protection we are obliged to coexist with fauna, if we are informed of any wild species near, immediately we have to report this situation to civil protection and they will be in charge of trapping and relocating the fauna, they are experts in those type of situation without hurting the spice. Certainly, in the hotel we have harmless coatis, usually, those animals are walking through the buildings looking for food and fighting with themselves for territory or even food. Raccoons, coatis do not bother people and are generally more scared than us. Once again, thank you so much for your visit and your comments. We definitely review all the valuable feedback you kindly share with us and that are in our hands in order to make the necessary adjustments, to keep providing the luxury service that sets us apart and which makes our guests return. Hope we can have the honor of your visit in the near future and have the chance to change your perception of our hotel and services. David Mendez General Manager UNICO 20°N 87°W Hotel Riviera Maya

Just visited Unico again after 4 years. I was very disappointed by the lack of attention there is to cleanliness. Stairs to go to the rooms are always full of the Coatis poop & urine. There are signs everywhere that say do not feed the animals yet the staff is feeding them the leftover room service food all day long. The bathrooms all around resort were not kept clean There is no premium liquor included. The liquor on the shelf is awful. If you want something better there is an extra charge beyond reasonable price. They make up for it in the food quality. Exceptional food & service in every restaurant. Although the breakfast buffet’s service was awful every day. The check in process took about 2 hours even though the reception was fairly empty at the time. No welcome drink was offered. You go through 2 different people trying to offer the sales presentation. We did agree to it for the following morning. Supposed to be 90 minutes & it turned out to be 3 hours even though we kept telling them we were not interested. 24 hour room service was excellent & quick. The pools are beautiful. If you are a beach person this is one of the most beautiful, clean, white sand, clear water beach I have ever seen. Overall we had a great time with our friends but this is by far NOT a five diamond resort. The award was from last year & don’t think it will receive one for 2024. We travel to Cancun about 6 times a year & will not be returning to this hotel.

However, the pinpointed opportunity areas that you're kindly sharing with us such as the cleanliness, food and drinks offer, service at some of our restaurants and check in process will be escalated to the key persons and management in order to use them to improve our service and make any necessary adjustments to deliver better experiences to all our guests and future visitors. We also regret to hear that due this experience, we're thinking about in not coming back anymore. Nevertheless, if you decide to change your mind, we will be happy to welcome you one more time. The truth is we had a bad and disappointing experience. I don't usually make these types of opinions but we came away with a very bad experience. From arrival at the hotel to check-in it took us more than 1 hour to do it.

Then they told us the benefits of the room of being able to choose the scent of your room or the pillows, which we were never able to do because our tablet never worked during the entire trip, even though we reported it, it couldn't be fixed.
In the gym the treadmills do not work well, they look old and have never been maintained.
Just like every day the power went out 2 or three times due to an electrical fault they had.

In the room the television is not smart TV so you cannot watch Netflix or other applications, only television channels.

The maid never left us towels after making up the room, we left to bathe and realized that on the first day we urgently asked for towels at the reception and they brought them to us after 1 hour.
And they didn't refill our mini bar either.
The food is not that good for the price you pay for the hotel, the breakfast is bad and the fish is of poor quality. The service at breakfast a la carte and the Japanese was very bad, they were even rude to us, the food took more than 1 hour to arrive. In the other restaurants, such as the Italian and the Mexican, the service is very good but the food still takes more than 1 hour to arrive.
They have a list of activities that are in the hotel and for 2 days they did not fulfill them or do anything

Good things about the hotel: Fernando, the very good concierge, was always very attentive, without him we would have had a very bad experience, he totally improved our experience. Astrid the waitress at restaurant 20 87, very good and attentive.
They give you hats and personalize them.

In general we believe that the hotel, the price you pay is very high for the quality it offers, I would not come again nor would I recommend the hotel, I was very disappointed, I do not understand how it is a 5 diamond hotel.

Unico 2087 is hands down the most exceptional resort experience we've ever had. From the moment we arrived, the service was absolutely impeccable, and it truly felt like the staff went out of their way to ensure we had the best time imaginable. Every detail, no matter how small, was handled with such care and attention. For example, while lounging by the pool, one of the staff alerted me that my phone was overheating in the sun—a thoughtful touch I never expected. And when a quick passing shower started, they covered our personal items while we stayed in the pool. It's these tiny, personalized touches that really set Unico 2087 apart.

Our butler was outstanding—checking in daily to make sure everything was perfect, keeping us updated on resort activities, and even offering insider tips for the best experiences. We truly felt like we were the only guests there, with the level of attention and care we received.

The resort grounds are beyond stunning—every corner of Unico 2087 is meticulously maintained, and it’s clear that cleanliness is a top priority. We were constantly impressed with how they kept the place immaculate, even as we enjoyed our evenings out. The food was another highlight: an abundance of fresh, delicious, and beautifully prepared dishes that constantly amazed us. And the drinks? True mixology at its finest—creative, bold, and expertly crafted.

While the resort is not an all-out party atmosphere, it still offers plenty of entertainment and an upbeat vibe. Whether it was live music, engaging poolside activities, or simply enjoying the serene luxury of the space, there was always something to enjoy without it ever feeling overwhelming.

We honestly can’t wait to return to Unico 2087—this place set a new standard for us in luxury and service. Every aspect of our stay exceeded expectations, and we will absolutely be back as soon as possible! —
