We loved our time in and around Bonavista, made even better by our accomodation.
We drove hard that day to make it before dusk because of the moose, and was exhausted when we arrived around 8 pm. We drove to Butler By The Sea and was meet by Janice (owner) who said she would take us to the cottage it was by no means close. When we arrived we looked at the cottage and thought it looked very old but was so tired we decided to go inside and have a look, we were very disappointed the cottage was very old inside and not nice (Hubert, had said it was nice and 4star). We were unsure what to do and Janice said we wouldn't get any thing else there was a festival going on, we asked about the breakfast and she said there would be NO breakfast, not what her husband Hubert had said. We ask if we could use the washer and dryer that was in the cottage and she said NO she had laundry in them ( I thought the appliance would've been part of the cottage, (would not you.) She didn't give us a receipt (do not people in business give receipts) obviously she just pockets the money when she rents this cottage (that is against what the government saids we should do, they call that elegal.
We stayed the night and did not use the bathtub/shower because it had mildew around the top of the bath. The floor in places was very soft in the cottage, the floor in the bathroom went downhill. There was only 1 door (a fire strap) there were no screens on the windows, multi electric plugs with a kettle and toaster plugged in, the towels were stained and old.
These people are passing this very old and dirty cottage of as part of the advertised B and B, they are using the B and Bs phone number and this is elegal to say the least, I'm sure TRIP ADVISOR does not approve of this.
We stayed at some very nice B and B when travelling around during Newfoundland,
Ocean Spray, Port Saunders
Ice Berg Alley, Twillingate
Cupid B and B, Cupid
Indian Brook B and B.
But Butler By The Sea has spoilt our holiday and we did not expect this on our vacation in Newfoundland.
We do hope you take this complaint serious, as we are sending 5 letters out to Government officials.
The Kemps
Pleasantly surprised, for sure.
We went to Bonavista while touring around NL, and found many accommodations were booking up, as the day went on. The Butlers had one room left, so we booked it.
Our room on the main floor was nice and comfortable.
Ample parking, and basically Oceanside.
Janice and Herb, were excellent. Breakfast was served in the dining room, for three couples. Great breakfast, with local jams made by Herb.
The coffee was made from iceberg ice (melted of course).
Kind of a neat touch considering, we saw several Icebergs in the area.
Would highly recommend for anyone traveling to the Bonavista area.
The breakfast is served at such a beautifully set table and it is very substantial and delicious!! We really enjoyed the home made preserves of bake apple and partridge berry jam.
We loved the coffee and Herb explained that he made it with iceberg water. We enjoyed our conversations with Herb and Janice. Herb with his love of fishing and of cod tongues convinced me I had to try them somewhere so I did.
This was also the first place where we were close to Puffins. Just a short drive from the B&B was the lighthouse where we spotted them.
Would stay here again should we ever make it back to Bonavista . Maybe try the honeymoon suite!
The property is located within minutes of the lighthouse and downtown. The twisting laneways make finding the home a bit difficult but not too bad if you can spot the signs (the Newfoundland government is forcing businesses to remove their signs and pay for government approved signage - same thing Mike Harris did in Ontario).
The Butler's only take cash so be sure to find an ATM before arriving (there is a Scotia Bank in town). If you go there, be sure to say hello to Max the monster-sized cat.
