Detailed Reviews
If you want to stay in town, in a charming inn that is walking distance to either SUNY Postdam or Clarkson University, then you definitely want to stay at the Clarkson Inn.
Benefits:
Suite style room, without suite style price. We stayed in a two queen room, which had a carved out space for microwave, small fridge, sink, then small bathroom with toilet and shower, small setee, desk, flat screen TV, and then a bay window with two Victorian upholstered chairs between a small round marble/glass table. We had 4 people and did not feel on top of one another at all.
Shower. Good pressure and bathroom came with a heat lamp.
Continental Breakfast. Hot beverage cups were 10 oz. not the 4 oz. cup that you receive at other hotels. Included: cereals, yogurt, bagels, egg/cheese/sausage/English muffin sandwiches (all individually wrapped) juice, water, milk (individual bottles). Wide selection of caffine/herbal tea and decaf or regular coffee.
Hot Beverage all day. Self-serve. A nice touch.
Staff. Very friendly and very helpful. We could tell that the staff had hotel pride and town pride. They were very helpful in describing the restaurants in town and even knew where the gluten-free bakery was.
Parking: Free and on the side
Walking Trail: The Inn is next to the Raquette River and Ives Park. Ives Park has several seating areas and a seated swing that overlooks the River.
Drawbacks:
No elevator. However, if your suitcase is heavy, a staff member will offer to bring it up the one flight of stairs for you.
If you are looking for an uninterrupted sleep, or are a light sleeper, suggest you bring ear plugs. The hotel cannot help rowdy students at night.
All in all, very satisfied for the price of our stay (~110 per night for 4). We will be returning. Staff took great care in regular sanitization of high touch points (front door, breakfast area).

The staff at the Clarkson Inn was attentive and quick to respond. The location is right in the heart of this small village, on a lovely bend of the Racquette River. The hotel is attractive, and somewhat charming. The rooms are large.
Three problems arose however, which could affect this as a future choice:
1) as it is in the heart of town, you also get to enjoy the noise in the heart of town. We visited when school was in session and experienced very loud partying outside and occasionally inside the hotel. Also. Some thoughtful people thought 12:30am was a great time to drive loops around town racing/revving their motorcycle and truck.
2) this hotel was obviously renovated to spare no expense in approximately 1989. The finishes are high end, but very out of date.
3) the mattresses also seem to have been last replaced in 1989.
Be aware, if you are a light sleeper, you may wish to choose another location.

The hotel is set in a beautiful location. The room was lovely, but the weather was a bit chilly and we needed to turn on the heat in the room. When we did, there was a horrible burning smell that would not go away and gave my daughter and I horrible headaches. I asked the front desk and they were able to provide us with another room, but when the heat was turned on in there, the smell happened again. It was determined that because of the pandemic, and the hotel being closed for a period of time where the heater did not need to be used, there was quite an accumulation of dust on the heating coils that needed to be burned off. It was somewhat disappointing that management did not have the foresight to check the heating units in the rooms upon the hotel re-opening, especially with how chilly it gets in Potsdam in the fall. The front desk clerk was very kind and helpful in addressing the problem and supplied us with many extra blankets to avoid turning on the heat. Unfortunately, we could not dine at the hotel and are hoping to someday enjoy all that it has to offer.

The Clarkson Inn advertises free cancellation 48 hour prior to arrival. When we tried to cancel 56 hours prior to arrival we were told that we would not be able to cancel because the actual cancellation policy that is sent to you after you book (in an email) states that the cut off is 11:59 PM 2 days prior to your stay. They would not let us cancel even though we had COVID reasons for cancelling and we called twice prior to 48 hours prior to arrival. They falsely advertised and then failed to honor their promise. The website also shows pictures of food and a dining area, insinuating food service availability at the hotel. There is no dining area, kitchen, or food service area at the Clarkson Inn, which is more false advertising. You have to leave the hotel for food and visit a local restaurant.

Our shower smelled like mildew, a good cleaning would help significantly.
Towel rack was on the floor and towels are piled up behind the toilet
I picked up the used bottle of conditioner from the bathrooms floor and threw it away.
Spider webs in the corner above the bed.
Final straw tonight, coming out of the bathroom and a nail caught my brand new sweater putting a hole in it.
Very glad this is the last time I have to come to this town.

I wanted to write a review here with situation that happened to my husband. I am so very upset. I wrote this to Clarkson Inn on May 24, 2022 and they have never responded:
Dear Clarkson Inn, I just want you all to know that I am very upset with your customer service and your unwillingness to change a reservation. My husband who booked an overnight room with you a few days ago through Engencia. However, he did not sleep well last evening and unfortunately is not able to travel today. My husband, myself and Engencia consultant contacted you to request that the reservation be changed to tomorrow night. The gentleman on the phone would not make this change. Your hotel was not loosing any money just an update for the next night. There are rooms available tomorrow night as well. My husband and I are so upset about this. When my husband was told that no changes can be made, he did attempt to make the drive to Pottsdam from Geneva, NY. He traveled about 50 miles and did not feel comfortable to travel the remainder of the trip as he was getting tired at the wheel. My husband does a lot traveling with his job and so for him to make that executive decision to come back home was not made lightly. He did not want to take the risk of a possible accident. Your hotel did not have the compassion for his situation and would not help us out and make a small change. We will now be charged full amount for this reservation ($143). This is not fair and a hotel your size should be able to accommodate unplanned situations. The way the economy is today and the way the world is today, you would think that we would all be trying to help each other out. I will be posting a very negative review on trip advisor as I am so very upset.
To date, I have not received any response from the Inn. Poor Poor Customer service. No one cares anymore. Makes me sad.

False advertising. I was arriving on a Saturday and was looking forward to "the delightful experience of traditional afternoon tea" with "assorted teas, hot coffee, and fresh baked confections," but it turns out they stopped that when COVID started (3 years ago!) and haven't bothered to update the site.
And their "made-to-order," "thoughtfully prepared gourmet breakfast of eggs your way, savory bacon, fresh cut fruit, daily baked pastries... freshly squeezed juice" was nowhere near what they actually offered. Their advertised online breakfast menu also includes "Norwegian Smoked Salmon and Classic Garnished Accompaniment" and "Scrambled Eggs and Omelettes Made Tableside by our Chef." I'm including photos from their website and photos I took the morning I was there. Yes, the place is clean, though a bit dated. The one redeeming feature was Kassia at the front desk who was lovely.
Would I recommend the hotel? It was clean, safe and well situated, but does not offer the amenities they advertise online so it was a disappointment. If they updated their website and removed those tempting offerings, guests would not be so disappointed.

My wife and I spent a night on June 26th at the Clarkson Inn as part of a quick anniversary weekend. The webpage looked lovely. The weekend rate was $174.60 for our 1 room with 2 queen beds. We made the reservation with the the Inn on June 23rd.
Upon our arrival we walked into a lobby stripped to the concrete and carpeting supplies stacked at one end. The hall outside our room was having the carpet pad glued down. There had been no mention of renovations or an offer to reduce the price for inconvenience.
We found our room was adequate although the shortage of staff was evident by the level of cleaning.
We went to the desk for ice and a sign said please wait, I'll be right back. After 10 minutes, no one. Returned to the room and tried the house phone. No answer. After a search we found the desk clerk cleaning a room near our room.
We realize there is a labor shortage and are tolerant.
There are limits.

There is no made to order breakfast. Website is completely misleading. There was self serve breakfast items- selection was worse than a chain hotel. Ugly bright fluorescent bulbs throughout the hotel and rooms. Room needed a thorough cleaning. Tub filled up when showering but eventually drained. My son goes to college here. I will not be returning to this hotel.
