Northern Family Motel was built in 1958 with newer building in 1985. We are the third family owner with 15 years of ownership under our belt. We are a very clean and quaint motel with an added touch of family and friendly environment.
Our market is dominated by being a college town and we are fully committed to providing a personal reach for those parents who have students dwelling in our area. We take care of who takes care of us. We are always connecting with parents to remind them of important dates that may need to book, we have cooked home cook meals for their son or daughter that are missing home, we have picked up medication for their under the weather child, we have helped them get a trust worthy mechanic, babysat while they attend a school function, dog walked, and we even get to know you well enough that your cocktail or preferred beverage may await your next arrival.
We may be an older style establishment but with that said we have the great old school mentality of being overly welcoming after all "You will arrive as strangers and leave as friends" is our motto dear to heart.
Don't let the "motel" cliche persuade you to look else where .... we are the place to make your stay relaxing. Try us out!!

My husband and I booked a room here to see the solar eclipse. Along with our quaint, very clean and comfortable basic room (the beds and pillows were nicer than I expected), we were very happy to see that behind the motel was a lovely expanse of nature---with a tree line bordering train tracks, just perfect for viewing the eclipse. We took our patio chairs back there from our room and enjoyed the amazing eclipse. The proprietor was very friendly and viewed the spectacle too! We also utilized a covered patio near our room for breakfast, and the motel's office doubles as a public living room area. All in all, VERY nice! I wish we could have stayed longer to explore the area. For a small motel, I'm giving an excellent rating because our stay exceeded my expectations.

The rooms are so adorable. The owners are exceedingly friendly and make you feel very welcome. They're also amenable to late arrivals, even close to midnight. They gave attention to detail to every room, making them feel cozy and comfy. We've stayed there twice and would stay again.

Motel just outside Pdam. Easy to get to, good signage. Not serving food at this time, so be sure to ask. We ended up being late for our arrival time, and I called to let them know. She figured that might be the case, and made easy arrangements to get us in to our room - which she had started the heat in, so it was nice and cozy.
Fancy? no. Clean and comfortable? - yes. Good value for the price. If daughter ends up going to SUNY Pdam, I'll be back

I'd easily 'ditto' the comments in the review by Wanbee. We pulled up to the red barn (check-in location) only to find an envelope with my name on it tacked to the door frame saying, here's the key, help yourself! We did. Yes, the bathroom floor (or at least a small portion of it) was heated, but we also could not adjust the room heat; it was cool the whole time. The room was microscopic; not much bigger than the bed (whose mattress was worn and sagging). There was a 12 inch (or so) flat screen tv on the wall (didn't know they came that small!). When we went to shower in the morning, there was very hot and very cold water, but one couldn't find a warm setting in between. The website pictures a lovely breakfast included, with fresh fruit and "the best blueberry muffins in Potsdam". In actuality, no breakfast currently is offered, thus no muffins!! Overall, a big disappointment.

Our son attends SUNY Potsdam and we took a chance on this motel as their prices beat out the others. I'm so glad we decided to check it out! Beautiful property and the management is so kind. Room is small (queen size bed) but perfect for one night. My in laws traveled with us as well and were pleased with their room as well. We will be back. Thank you!

Our son has attendedPotsdam for the last 3 plus years and has played two sports. That being said, we have spent more nights than we can count up at Potsdam for games. When we first started coming it was hit and miss with hotels. Super expensive and ok and middle of the road but not ok etc. Then we were tipped off to THE NORTHERN FAMILY HOTEL! If you are looking for a clean, tastefully decorated, and cozy room you have found your place. In the summer you can sit out at a fire and socialize with the owners and other travelers and in the winter you can wake up to an amazing breakfast! Not like the chain hotels. This has homemade breads, muffins, coffee cakes, eggs, orange juice etc and the best coffee we have ever had. But, the other super cool thing is the positive energy you get from the owners. They are such great hard working welcoming people. We feel like we have made a friend over the years, so our stays here have meant more to us than we could ever rightly express!!! In a time when chain hotels are popping up all over and are able to charge through the roof and treat you like just another number, Northern Family has the market on hospitality and great energy!! Enjoy your stay!!!

We arrived with expectations of a nice time at a small, mom-n-pop establishment. Our first impression was exactly that...we were greeted with smiles and pleasant conversation. However after spending the evening on the Clarkson campus, returning to the motel and falling into bed (which was very comfortable), we awoke in the morning at 9:30 to no hot water! None in the shower or sink! We trekked through the frosty February morning to the separate office building and politely inquired if there was a problem. We were told, "We're so sorry....this has never happened before...we'll come and check, but perhaps you'll need to move to the room next door to take your shower?" After they checked to confirm we didn't have any hot water we were directed to the other room. Despite the inconvenience, we didn't make a scene, but gathered our clothes and toiletries, and went outside to the next room. After showering, we headed to the office to check out. Entering the office I was asked if I had paid upon checking in. I replied that I had, but that I was hoping there might be some compensation for our morning's inconvenience. The owners' response: "No we apologized, and you were able to get a shower." WOW....not at all what I expected from a place that supposedly "treats you like family"! I didn't expect to have the cost of our evening's stay completely reimbursed, but I did expect an offer for a partial refund. Paying for a room usually includes a warm shower without going outside in the 21st century.

Score is "-DISGUSTING" I stayed at this little disgusting motel 2 weekends ago. Upon entering the room, you get hit in the face with MILDEW! The rug in front of the door and window are water stained and the floor board is warped. The bed linens are dingy and are about a 75 thread. Bathroom, you have to sit sideways to use toilet, and floor not finished...critters crawling around. AC unit was from the 1970's. D-I-S-G-U-S-T-I-N-G!!!

This motel did not live up to the other reviews I read here on TripAdvisor. This is an older motel showing signs of its age. Others mentioned renovations - we had room 7 in mid September 2014 and I doubt that room has seen any renovations (other than repairs) since it was built.
The room was incredibly small, the bed soft and uncomfortable. Sure it had a fridge and TV, but everything else in the room was old and tired.
Owners were pleasant enough, no problem there. And I believe they work very hard to make what they have very presentable, but it's still and old motel style property.
They do take dogs, which was the primary reason we were there. Nice grounds, plenty of space to exercise your dog.
I'm sorry to say we wouldn't stay there again - I'd stay in a neighboring town and drive the 20-30 minutes to get into Potsdam. I wouldn't recommend this property to any friends.

Quiet, peaceful setting but rooms were a disappointment. Beds were comfortable but rooms were dated and not very clean. Our first room at checkin had a plugin air freshener which I am highly allergic to. I removed that and left outside on table next to ashtray full of ashes. The bathroom had mildew in the caulking around tub and your face was practically in the sink when you were sitting on the toilet. No table for computer/desk work. Asked owner about fixing light that didn't work and owner offered us a different room which we accepted. The new room was larger but still dirty and dated. Mold on pipes under sink, carpet around baseboards had not been vacuumed in a very long time as well as under furniture and beds. Bed linens were crisp and clean but both rooms needed a good cleaning. Normally stay in national chain hotels but we are trying to support local businesses in this horrible economy. This is one motel we will not be returning to.
