My girlfriend and I visited Nungubane Lodge in December 2019. While we live in London, I am South African and have spent most of my holidays in the bush while growing up (i.e. this was not my first time). Being Norwegian, its was my girlfriend's first time in the bush - however, we were both equally blown away by our experience with Annouchka, Chris and the team.

From the moment we arrived we were warmly greeted by the full team, and made to feel immediately like old friends rather than new guests. The lodge is an intimate one, hidden away in the reserve and is bush luxury and hospitality at its finest. The rooms are large and private, secluded away from the main lodge with your own private terrace over looking the valley.

I have also come across many rangers in my numerous visits to the bush, however Annouchka was among the best!! Her ability to read the game's movements and behavior was second to none, allowing us amazingly close encounters with the elephants, while most importantly, making everyone feel safe and comfortable. Beyond her game ranging capabilities she's a lot of fun and made every drive interesting and enjoyable, regardless of sightings.

When visiting, ask Chris to make you his famous Stoffels Special, especially on a hot day by the pool. Chris was a fantastic host, with more than one story shared around the bar in the evenings/early mornings. If you're feeling up to it, ask about the German Monkey...! And if Chris doesn't remind you that you're not in Disneyland prompt him to do so, its an important part of the safety briefing.

The food was amazing, Ann and her team did a brilliant job! 3 course meals for lunch and dinner and delicious breakfasts. At one point we had to turn down dessert because we just ate too much (the food was almost too good to stop).

All in all our experience was beyond expectation. I had read all the brilliant reviews before going and worried it may have set my expectations too high, luckily they weren't high enough. Thank you so much to Chris, Annouchka and the rest of the team for making us feel so at home. My only regret is that we didn't stay longer.

We will back back for sure!

We had an amazing experience at Nungubane Lodge. The lodge is small and intimate and at a great location in Welgevonden Reserve. Annouchka was our guide and it was one of the best guides we have experienced at any game reserve. Her knowledge is unparalleled and she went out of her way to take us on a different game drive route every day. We were spoilt with amazing game sightings, most of them close to our vehicle. The Welgevonden Reserve is also extremely beautiful with all the game in prime condition and not scared of game drive vehicles. The reserve takes the management of the game and environment very seriously. All the Nungubane staff were so friendly and no special request went unanswered. They went out of their way to make our stay special. The lodge experience is top class but unintimidating and it feels like coming home. We will definitely go back and recommend it to anyone wanting to experience the bushveld.

Nungubane is a small lodge that is professional, but friendly and relaxed at the same time. The rooms were lovely and cool with the fluffiest towels and the nougat with turn down service was a special touch. The meals were delicious and there was certainly no shortage of food, even with a hungry teenager. Our compliments to the chef Meriam and her team. The lodge has a hide, a sala for relaxing with a book and a very inviting swimming pool area. The host, Nicky, looked after us from the moment we arrived and nothing was too much trouble. Our game ranger Hein, was extremely knowledgable and an excellent driver and is a huge asset to the lodge.
The whole team made our stay extremely enjoyable and relaxing and we would not hesitate to recommend this lodge to future travellers.

Nungubane lodge ticked every single box!

We stayed at the lodge over the Easter weekend (4 nights) and from the hospitality, the incredible food selection, the game drives and the beautiful atmosphere that was created, we give them 5 stars +.
The rooms are big and well equipped with everything that you need with a king size bed to rest on every night.

The food is at least a two-course meal for breakfast and lunch and dinner with a three-course meal. There was a variety of dishes at every meal which suited everyone’s palette (even for the fussy eaters, they were satisfied).

Whilst in our quiet time, we lazed around by the beautiful pool side with some drinks which the bar was well stocked with.

Annouchka kept us well entertained and informed on our game drives. With her vast knowledge of the animals, the terrain and plants, we felt that we really had one of the BEST rangers that we have ever experienced. She made our trip so worthwhile by getting the best views of lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo and more.

We even had a romantic setup dinner under the stars - which just made our weekend celebration that more special!

The way the lodge is managed by Chris and his staff is such a treat and we left making not only memories but great friendships too!

Thank you to the great team at Nungubane lodge, we hope to visit soon enough and book out the whole lodge with the family :)

A gem of a spot for game viewing and getting 5 star treatment. First, the hospitality is second to none with all of the staff giving 110% focused energy on making the stay memorable. Every one readily wears different hats, especially the assistant manager, Keegan, who was guide, tracker, gate transfer driver, waiter, wine connoisseur, vehicle polisher, drummer, dancer, and an all around lovely host, along with his hard working and warm fiancee Kyra. The food was superb, menus flexible, and the chef a bundle of enthusiasm and fun. We enjoyed an unbelievable South African braai and cultural night, with the lodge's own choir (all the staff energetically singing and dancing despite a long day looking after us). The masseuse/ housekeeper was excellent at both jobs and we could have ate the exquisite meals off the shiny floors she kept. Even the gardeners had time for a chat with big smiles. The shots to warm up with after the fantastic game drives, and amrulla enhanced morning coffees, and even freshly picked bushman's mint tea while taking in the rhinos made the visit surreal. Keegan has superhuman enthusiasm and compassion for the animals and endless knowledge (which is advanced with a degree in zoology). We loved the bush olympics he orchestrated too. There is definately a special energy about the place and we recommend you leave this visit to the end of any RSA holiday as its hard to beat.

From the beautiful musical welcome, to the fabulous food, attention to detail and knowledgeable staff, we couldn't have asked for a more memorable stay at Nungubane Lodge.

The accomodation is absolutely stunning, perfectly clean and the views over the bush including elephants from our balcony were mesmerising.

The food is fresh, fabulous quality and delicious and you could tell how much care and effort had gone into every dish.

Our game drives with Keegan were always fascinating. We saw so many rhinos, lions, wildebeest and many more. When the big five weren't around we learnt about the birds and plants instead. Keegan's knowledge, stories and evident passion for the bush makes him a fabulous guide.

All of the staff really went above and beyond and we were genuinely sad to say good bye. We can't wait to recommend this special place to all of our family and friends. Thank you Nungubane!

We recently spent an incredible girls weekend at Nungubane!
Annoushka our very knowledgeable guide, greeted us with GnT's as we arrived... and from there if you can believe it, things even got better.
Professional hosting from all staff, including Chris our fabulous manager who welcomed us back from our evening game drive with drums.
The food was sublime and rooms very comfy, especially red wine around the fire place in the evenings.
WE WILL BE BACK!

Everything about Nungubane Game Lodge deserves 5 stars. Their service is phenomenal from beginning to end. The staff are incredibly friendly and really do make you feel like you are at home from the moment you arrive to the moment that you leave. They pay attention to all the small details and it definitely goes a long way. Our game guide, Keegan, was very friendly, informative and knowledgeable and really went out of his way to make our game drives as incredible as what they could be. The food was super delicious and there is not one dish or snacks that did not leave us wanting more. I would highly recommend Nunugubane Game Lodge to anyone who wants to be at home away from home as well as living in a lodge that makes you feel like you are in the bush with the bush themed interior decorating as well as the thatch and vast amount of wood that makes up the lodge. I would definitely be back in a heart beat. Thank you Nungubane for the wonderful experience and for really going out of your way to make my birthday so very special.

Visiting Nungabane lodge was so incredibly special, I don't know where to begin. The whole experience from start to finish was just amazing. The lodge itself is in the most beautiful setting with views for miles over the bush. Each room felt very private and secluded, out in the wilderness with nothing around and the pool area was the perfect place to relax between game drives.

The staff were so amazingly friendly, warm and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble and everyone always had a smile on their face. The "family" that has been created within the lodge really shines through every element, creating a truly unique experience. The food was absolutely delicious, we had such a great variety of meals, with options to choose from every day. Coming back to reality and not getting to choose between specials of the day has been a real shock to the system!

The game drives were really wonderful. We had some very memorable and special sightings of so many different animals. Both Keegan and Annushka were so incredibly knowledgable about the wildlife, I learnt so much and with their understanding of the animals we were able to position ourselves in places allowing us the best view points, as the animals went about their daily business.

I also had a massage with Elisa, which was amazing, so relaxing and a lovely treat, I would highly recommend.

Overall we had a totally unforgettable experience, surrounded by the most warm South African hospitality and I already can't wait to go back again ASAP!!!
