Stayed here for 4 nights from 7th January, first time travelling solo and staying in a hostel and I wasn’t let down at all.
The hostel cost me just over $40 a night, and for that I got a comfortable bed, good quiet roommates, a very hot shower and en suite toilet/sink shared between just 4 of us.
The lockers provided in the rooms were more than big enough, even if you’re travelling with a couple of suitcases, and reception will even supply a lock if like me, you forget yours!
The communal areas are clean, spacious and modern; I didn’t use the kitchen but plenty appeared to. There is plenty of space to chill and have a coffee, and the bar was lively, the beer was good and the staff were friendly.
This place is also 2 minutes walk from the nearest subway station, and the E train gets you to the centre of Manhattan in less than 15 minutes. There are a few great places to eat within 10 minutes walk (John Brown’s BBQ a highlight) and some decent bars too. Don’t be put off by the fact this place isn’t in Manhattan; I never felt unsafe walking around the general area alone.
All in all, a place I’d highly recommend and will come back to should I come alone to NYC again!

I stayed at the Local for 3 nights in what was my first time staying at a hostel. The receptionist who checked me in was lovely and very helpful. I was in a mixed room for 6, where the locker space was more than enough and each bed was clearly marked. There are plug sockets by each of the beds if you need to charge phone or anything. Everybody I met was extremely kind and welcoming, from the barman to the other guests. Speaking of the bar, it was a nice little area to congregate, with drinks at a reasonable price in a nice atmosphere. Would definitely go again!

Tip. Go to the roof terrace, views of Brooklyn Bridge are amazing!

Good price for a 4 night stay end of December including NYE! We struggled to get anywhere on Manhattan that wasn’t either really poorly reviewed or in the thousands so this was a good compromise.

Good location, close to 3 different subway stations on different lines so you can really get anywhere easily. Local area is quiet and more residential than Manhattan, but seems safe.

We had one of the few private rooms available, room was nice and clean, bed reasonably comfy for a budget hotel/hostel. Having a private bathroom was really nice, as I’ve stayed at many places where they are shared! Shower is really small as some other guests have mentioned but does the job.

The only complaint about the room I have is it was pretty cold! A couple of the walls are bare (unplastered) painted brick that doesn’t have the beat insulation. There’s a heater in the room but it must cost the hotel a lot to keep those going in every room overnight.

Communal areas nice, there’s a decent sized kitchen that we didn’t actually use but saw a lot of guests using. Lots of seating in the ‘common area’, then there’s also quite a nice bar area that serves coffee and pastries in the morning and then alcohol later on. You each get a free welcome drink token on check in and the white wine included in that offer was really nice wine!

There’s also a roof terrace (you can’t drink up there but you can smoke) where you can get a really good view of the manhattan skyline on a clear day.

Overall, a good stay and I would definitely consider staying here again if I return to NY.

My wife and I rented a private room and the room was completely dirty when we checked in. A layer of dust was visible over all surfaces and the sheets and bedding appeared dirty as well. The mattress was springy, not a queen despite the room name, and not great to sleep on. Also our key cards continually stopped working for no reason and when you brought them the front desk there was no apology or explanation; they would just silently reset the card and give it back to you. I know this place is more of a hostel but our room was $135/night and the quality of room and level of service was woefully inadequate for that price point. Will not stay again and not recommended at all.

Warmly Greeted and attentively helped by their great staff who provide efficient and welcoming service which sets them apart from other hostels. I regularly stay there and managed to get a slightly earlier check in based on the fact that it was not at full occupancy which i greatly appreciated. Apon getting into my room one of the housekeeping ladies stopped my in the hallway to check to see if everything was ok.. I don’t even get this in a hotel:) Back on my way out the Bartender was great and i really cant wait to return when i get back to New York one day! Great job Guys

Had a brilliant experience here. For such an affordable stay the quality was excellent, the room was lovely, clean and cosy and the services offered were great - kitchen, lounge, computer/library area and laundry room. They also have activities like movie nights which is such a great bonus. The staff were extremely kind - especially Yari - who helped my friend and I when we missed our bus. We really felt taken care of. The location is also great and well connected with a subway station a few minutes away and it felt safe walking home at night. I couldn't believe we found this place and that it was as good as it seemed, especially for NYC! I would highly recommend staying here. Thank you so much to the staff who made our stay so enjoyable ❤

Recent trip to NYC we had tickets to see the rockettes. They canceled all the shows for the remainder of the year. With this and the fact that covid cases rising daily we wanted to leave. Since we were only giving 24hr noticed they would not refund us the our money, The workers I talked to were rude. Can't believe the lack of flexibility during this NYC and national crisis. There are hotels near this one which have competitive rates such as the Paper Factory Hotel that have nicer staff and nicer accomodations.

Depends on your luck- I met 3 rude staff and 2 friendly staff here. Note that complimentary welcome drink is only valid at certain timings at the bar. Amenities wise, hostel has a large comfy common area with projector tv on the wall plus a rooftop with nice view of brooklyn bridge. Dorm room is decent for the price, which is half price compared to staying in manhattan. Can be quiet and dimly-lit 10mins walk from subway at night but at least there aren't dangerous-looking people around the area.

Great place to stay! I booked direct as I needed a bed for 2 days during my visit. The Local was convenient as it's located a few blocks from the court square train station.

Check in was easy. Staff was nice & helpful! I like that they give you a lock for the storage that you have to return upon check out. The room was clean & just what was needed. Loved that there's a bathroom in the dorm rooms. There's also a cafe/bar downstairs, but when I visited they had very limited pastries available. The rooftop has a beautiful view of the city, and nice seating area. I'll definitely keep this place on my list of places to stay.

This hostel sell beds. The cost of one bed in 6-beds' room is $38. The price of one bed in 4-beds' room with the same gender occupants is between 44 and 50$. You could by all beds in such room and book a room, it will cost~$180-200.
