We stayed at the 1922 Starkey Bed and Breakfast this past weekend. We had a very lovely stay here. The location is great and within proximity to Watkins Glen, Geneva and Keuka Lake. We stayed in the Veranda Room which was very large and had its own porch where we had a lovely view of the lake and sunrise. Kathy, our hostess, was very gracious, personable and knowledgeable about the area. She cooked delicious breakfasts and we ate on the porch. Lovely view with many birds singing…it was so peaceful and tranquil. A wonderful getaway to refresh and recharge! Thank you Kathy! Below are pictures of the view from our room at sunrise and daytime.
My husband and I came to The Finger Lakes for a last minute long anniversary weekend. We typically stay at B & B’s no matter where we vacation if possible rather than a large chain hotel. There was not much to choose from 2 weeks before our anniversary, so I was happy to find this Inn had availability with a mostly 5 star rating. Due to an emergency with our dog that came up the day we were to leave, I had to call and ask if we could push back our reservation a day and leave on Monday instead of Sunday, and thankfully Cathy had the availability. Now I absolutely understand the challenges presented to these establishments due to the restrictions, and I love the character of an old Inn, but we were pretty let down by our experience here. This is a big old lake house in a quiet location, but it is quite dark and dreary, and when it’s raining it is even more so. It’s very stark and basic. Parking is on the grass, which ok we could go with that, until it’s been raining and its slippery and muddy and dark and there are holes in the grass with NO walkway lighting. That is a major hazard. We opted out of breakfast 2 of the 3 mornings. We did have breakfast on the day we were leaving, on the open freezing porch. You had better eat it quickly or it’s cold. Why breakfast could not be accommodated somehow inside this big Inn (living room, dining room and any other space closed off) is beyond me. The amount of guests can be easily socially distanced inside. This situation has been around long enough now for businesses to figure it out. Lastly there was an intense sulfur smell coming from the sink, shower and toilet anytime you needed to run the water. In a hot shower it was nauseating and disgusting and smelled of rotten eggs throughout the room!! Thankfully we had bottled water to brush our teeth that first night. When I reported this to the owner the response was it’s not toxic, it’s minerals from all the rain, and we were offered a gallon of spring water. A room discount would have been more appropriate!! Just a complete let down all around.…
This was actually our honeymoon destination. We chose the private suite and it was exactly that. If we wanted to have breakfast with the other guests, we could but we also felt like we were in our own apartment. Nightly texts from the owner asking if we are having breakfast were greatly appreciated and the peace and quiet cannot have a price tag put on it.
1922 Starkey House was the perfect base for our 5-day mid-September exploration of the Lake Seneca area. In fact, we loved staying there so much that we’re heading back in early November for 4 nights. Cathy was a wonderful host, and we enjoyed our spacious, but cozy, Veranda View room, and its wonderful private porch. Every morning before breakfast we sat on our veranda, drank our wake-up coffee prepared by Cathy, and enjoyed the sunrise, lake view, and occasional passing train and horse and buggy. Cathy’s an excellent cook and each morning prepared different sumptuous and hearty breakfasts. During our time there we enjoyed omelets/eggs (often accompanied by local cheeses, sauteed or grilled veggies), pancakes, waffles oatmeal, toast, bacon and sausage, jams, maple syrup, fruit, juice, and coffee. Every day we headed out to various destinations in the area equipped with “insider” information Cathy provided on the local sites, restaurants, etc. Her great advice led us to several excellent restaurants, hiking locales, and other places of interest. As I said earlier, we loved 1922 Starkey House so much that we’re going back in November. We’re looking forward to Cathy’s warm and welcoming hospitality and TLC!…
We attended a wedding at a venue a few miles down the street so we stayed the entire weekend. We had an extravagant charcuterie board waiting for us when we arrived. The owner was in constant communication with us about our arrival time so it could be waiting for us outside on the deck to enjoy after along drive. The owner also communicated with us about our breakfast requests for each morning. The home is beautiful and our room had a private bathroom. It is located only a couple of miles from various wineries and about a 15 minute drive from Watkins Glen-it is a great location to stay for a weekend getaway and some R & R!
