An exceptional stay for an exceptional birthday milestone. I used a travel agency to book my stay at Chitwa Chitwa and so I really did not have any first hand knowledge of who or what I might be experiencing in terms of guest service. Well, from the moment I arrived, someone opened my door and that kind of caring service continued throughout my stay. First time in South Africa and first time on safari, so this was a very different experience for me. I appreciated the attention to detail of my massively expansive room. It was luxurious, feminine, and beautiful with lovely touches of animal print. I had an even larger outdoor patio with a plunge poll where I would just sit and watch the animals. Admittedly, the food was not my favorite. It was good, but basic and as a foodie who loves luxury travel, I'd expected a food spread that matched the decor and service. The bar and spa staff were so kind to me and the game driver (I forget his name) would even come to my room to walk me back to the main building/lobby. Everyone was so thoughtful. The twice daily game drives were great. Because of the remote location and poor internet (which was fine and expected by the way), I wish that there were more activities like yoga, craft cocktail making, a cooking class, something local, a visit to a local school, or something to help add a little more color to the day. All and all, would definitely return and this time with family!

Chitwa Chitwa was one of, if not the, best safari camp experiences we’ve ever had - from the quality of the sightings, to the experience of our guide, to the accommodations, food, and overall feel of the camp. Our accommodations were phenomenal! We were in a HUGE private cabin with our own plunge pool and deck overlooking the watering hole. Our guide, Deon, was absolutely wonderful. Working seamlessly with his tracker, Moses, Deon created drive experiences we had always dreamed of, including four rhinos together at a watering hole, a leopard with her kill in a tree, and tracking a pack of wild dogs through the bush. He approached wildlife with care, and adjusted the vehicle (without prompting) to provide unparalleled views and photos. But he also stopped for the smallest, but equally interesting, creatures like a molting leopard tortoise, a giant land snail moving across the road, and a flap-neck chameleon on our drive back to camp in the dark. Deon is extremely knowledgeable about both flora and fauna, and enthusiastically shares his knowledge and significant experiences in the bush. Our bush walk with him was enlightening and beyond educational. But most of all, he made our safari experience truly fun. Deon brings his wonderful sense of humor and his passion for the natural world to everything that he does. Our butler, Kenzi, was also wonderful! She took care of every request and detail, and was delightful to be with. At the spa, the hot stone massage was fantastic and highly recommended. The meals prepared by the lodge were fantastic, and the menu was inventive as well as delectable. Any foodie would be pleased with the variety and abundance of choices. But more than anything, the entire team at Chitwa Chitwa, and especially our guide Deon, were warm, welcoming people who really seemed to enjoy being there. Our time at Chitwa Chitwa was absolutely unforgettable! Thanks Chitwa Chitwa!

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights in early September 2022 for our Honeymoon, and we were extraordinarily sad to leave. Right from stepping off the bumpy 20 minute bush plane ride, we were made to feel welcome and at ease by our guide for the next few days, Deon. The rooms are incredible, spacious, clean, private, and have an excellent view of the watering hole, where you can spot Hippos, Elephants, Giraffes, Crocs, and various types of antelope. The food was excellent - no matter where it was (the brai in the bush being a personal favourite) and the staff were all very attentive and looked after us well. Deon, and our spotter, Moses were incredible. Deon, took a lot of photos on his high-powered camera that he shared with us after the trip, while Moses could spot anything (particular highlights were spotting a bush baby hiding in a tree during a pitch black evening drive, and an Ostrich that must have been a good few miles away, and appeared to us as a moving black dot through some fairly powerful binoculars). The whole experience was unreal, and we left with, genuinely, a very heavy heart even though we still had another two weeks exploring Southern Africa - would highly recommend.

We just returned from a 4 night stay at Chitwa Chitwa in Mid October and we can say that it was not all we were expecting of a luxury lodge. Be prepared for your digestive system to have issues in the bush! To start with, the rooms were very nice and appointed but the cleanliness could have been much improved. The bathroom floor was dirty, lots of gaps at the doors that allows lizards, bugs and flies to get into the room. Some of the bathrooms require you to walk up 4 steps and have no doors between the bathroom and bedroom. The shower was another 4 steps down and was quite small. The food we had was good, but not outstanding. Matter of fact we only had 2 sit down meals at the lodge. Those meals were extremely romantic and well prepared. The two other dinner meals were in the bush and had no bathroom facilities, was essentially a barbecue style dinner with basic chicken and lamb. If you have any bathroom needs, forget the dinner as they will expect you to use the bush. They also don't prepare you an alternative dinner, but you wait until a leftover meal can be brought to your room. The breakfast is just so so, with a cold selection and very limited hot selection. Some of the cold food was out so long with no refrigeration, we both got ill from the food sitting out for several hours. The bar service provided by PEWA was excellent and knew how to deliver customer service. Some other staff members we encountered are lacking this skill. The game drives were OK, but guide we had was preoccupied at getting his best photos at times and not the benefit of the guests. They did communicate with other game drives to help get some views of wildlife in the area. They do focus more on leopards and lions then other sightings. Expect to see about 3 vehicles at each spot at times. There is no way to get into the vehicles if you have a physical challenge stepping up about 18 inches from the ground and then lifting your legs over the sides of the vehicle. so if you have a physical challenge with walking or lifting a leg up high, be prepared with not going on the game drives. They did not have a way to assist guests to get into the vehicles. This is most likely an issue once in the bush for the sundowner or breakfast break where you will be stuck in the vehicle if you were able to get in at the lodge. We were at another lodge that had a wonderful ramp built to ease the access into the land cruisers for the guests, especially those that were older an had limited mobility, but not here. The lodge itself is very beautiful and the wildlife that comes to the waterhole is excellent for viewing during the day. We had frequent visits by elephants, antelope, Nyalla, Kudu, and an occasional giraffe. This was one of our favorite things to do watching them wander to the waterhole. With some improvements, this could be a great lodge, but right now it doesn't meet the standards of a luxury lodge that we expected. They need to focus on fine dining venues onsite and improve hygene/ food safety for breakfast and lunch. If you want a lunch burger, be sure to ask for no spices in the meat. They heavily season it with turmeric and curry. Lamb and chicken are the mainstay for dinner meals. The filet we had for one of the dinners was excellent. Usually 2 choices for the main entree. There is no menu to choose from, but set selection by the day. BTW, they did provide bug spray for the room and mosquito repellent for your use. During our stay, the bush was starting to get green and we had some very hot days, so AC was a big plus for the lodge. We did not use their limited spa or the pools due to the hot days of 95-103F in mid October. It did cool down to mid 80's for our last 2 days but more humid. Recommend you bring a small flashlight for your room use as well as walking from room to lodge and back as the paths are not well lit. Also expect leopards and hyenas to roam the grounds at night and have an escort to your room. They also provided a nice booklet of animals, birds, reptiles, etc checklist to keep track of what you see during your drives. That was a nice touch. The road if driving into the lodge is in terrible shape with potholes and dirt road for 1/2 the distance from Hoedspruit airport. A minibar is provided in the room and is stocked with water, wine, alcohol and a few Pringles/chips.

Dear John, It has taken us some time to prepare this response as we always thoroughly investigate these instances and take them on very seriously and earnestly. We really wanted to have you impressed when you leave us, and we are delighted that you still enjoyed the team on the ground despite your raised concerns as well as the beautiful haven of bush that we call home. We would like to say that we appreciate your feedback, as that is what makes it possible for us as a lodge to improve and make it better for a next stay with us, it is the small things that make it special. Thank you also for sharing it with us as constructive and with the intention to improve on all levels. We appreciate your words and we reassure our constructive urgency and focus on the comments below. With regards to general cleanliness, we have addressed the points raised amongst the team and we have taken the comments with great earnestness to improve. We are truly sad to hear about your difficulty with the vehicle ramp and game viewing, this is highly unusual as we pride ourselves since our beginning over 40 years ago, on a highly personal and exclusive experience and one that accommodates all. We apologise that the ramp we offered did not suit your needs and will focus on improving in this regard. Our maintenance team was informed about the respective points raised in your review and are thankful. We would like to let you know that we have recently employed a top food consultant that has fine dining experience at corporations commensurate to that of the best in the world and particularly a lifetime of experience in ultimate safari lodges. She is working on our food and we are already improving to the highest level. She will visit Chitwa frequently and make sure our standard prevails for years to come. We have two amazing and exciting chefs in the team and we are certainly going to improve drastically in this regard and offer the great dining quality and experience that we have done in the past, with innovations in the pipeline that are going to lift us higher than ever before. Additionally, as part of your feedback we have addressed our safari teams as this is an area we are very strong at and this should always be seamless. We thank you for raising this point. Our management team reported that they did check in on you during your stay. None of the concerns in the feedback were mentioned, and we always encourage people to raise any problems because we can then try make it so much better during your stay as necessary. We are actively seeking to improve the experience we offer each and every one of our guests and it is people like yourself that make it possible for us to achieve greater heights in hospitality, especially now. Thank you for your time in constructing feedback, and again we appreciate your kindness in doing so. As ever, if there is anything else you would like to mention please kindly email us at marketing@chitwa.co.za. Thank you, Chitwa Chitwa Private Game Lodge Management and Team

We left Chitwa Chitwa a few days ago with exceedingly heavy hearts after a four night stay. What an absolute pleasure and privilege it was to be there. We’ve done a few safaris before but the recently refurbished lodge is the most beautiful we have stayed in; whoever did the interior design has a real eye for style that I wish I possessed, but it’s also thoughtfully designed. In addition to the view of a dammed lake and the resident hippos from the public areas, each suite has its own view of a slice of the lodge surroundings from a private deck. I spent many hours on the private deck watching the animal world go by, including kingfishers catching dragonflies, warthogs having mud baths and monitor lizards checking out the nests of dive-bombing plovers. The game viewing is second to none and for that we have to bow down in awe to our tracker, Ranson, and our ranger, Dylan. Both appear to be possessed with magical powers. We swear that Ranson has X-ray vision; a dot on the horizon that none of us could see would turn out, several minutes later, to be a leopard, and how he spotted a tiny chameleon in a tree in the dark is beyond us. Dylan’s driving skills are second to none (I’m convinced that he can park a Toyota Landcruiser into a space designed for a Mini) and he got us closer to animals than we have ever been before whilst at the same time taking great care not to stress them. The result was something very special indeed that I shall remember for the rest of my days. We particularly loved Dylan’s philosophy of posing questions about what we were seeing and then making us work for the answers, although he must have felt like banging his head repeatedly on the nearest tree when we failed to identify virtually every animal track on the brilliant walking safari he did for us. Thanks to this amazing pair, we had ticked off the Big Five in our very first drive, including lions feeding on a buffalo carcass, a leopard shinning up a tree with its supper and a couple of rhino ambling across the airstrip. The next few days brought us wild dogs with puppies, two male leopards hurling abuse at each other and the biggest herd of buffalo we have ever seen, plus sightings of at least four other leopards. Our very last drive ticked off the Big Five again. As with any holiday, it’s as much about the people as the sights. The team at Chitwa Chitwa were exceptional, not only in their service ethic, but also in terms of being downright lovely people. Leah looked after our every need quietly and efficiently but always with a massive smile, and Piwa was a very bad influence on us, just as every good barman should be (although to be fair, we didn’t need much encouragement). The food was delicious and plentiful, so much so that I may be going home air freight. Every member of staff we met was, without exception, welcoming and friendly. I guess that the people you spend most time with are likely to be those whose company you miss the most, and Dylan, who was never off duty, is a standout safari guide who also happens to be one of life’s genuinely nice guys. We missed his company the moment we drove away. Apologies for the essay on Chitwa Chitwa but it, and its wonderful staff, merit more than just a few words. Please go and see for yourself but leave us some room - we’re going back!

Spent two nights at the lodge, and I loved it! Awesome management team, general staff and rangers! Nights at Chitwa is something outta the ordinary, it was so calming and relaxing! Frankly, 2 nights won’t suffice, one needs a longer stay! The minute I left Chitwa I started planning my second visit, it’ll be at least for 5 nights if they would allow even longer!

What can I add that others have not said? Having traveled around the world and having experienced unbelievable sights and cultures, this is the trip that changed us the most. Humbling and awe inspiring to be among nature as it should be...harmony between the species and truly a "lion kind" circle of life. The sights, smells, and experience will be with us forever. Our guide, Deon and tracker, Moses made the experience warm, friendly, and special. The staff holds a special place in our hearts. Understanding that many pass through Chitwa, the staff made us feel like part of the family. We hope to return soon as each day in the African bush is different and remarkable. We recommend Chitwa for the beauty, people, food, hospitality , and experience. They hit it out of the park!

We had a remarkable five days at Chitwa Chitwa. First, the facilities are great. Our lodge was very nice with an outdoor deck facing the water where the hippos live and other animals visit. It really was charming. Second, the safari drives we took each day were wonderful. Our guide, Deon, and our tracker, Moses, were absolutely great. It is amazing how close you get to the wildlife. Our guide did a great job of giving us some amazing experiences while keeping us safe at all times. The highlights for us, of course, were the lions and leopards — followed closely by the elephants. It is also pretty great when your guide is enjoying the wildlife spotting experience as much as you are. Third, the entire staff was incredible. It is impossible to mention everyone here, but a few are worth mentioning. Johan (sp?) and Nelson were just great and took very good care of us. At the risk of repeating myself, our guide, Deon, was superb. We were sad to leave these fine folks, but the experiences they gave us will never be forgotten. Fourth, the food was very good. We ate very well those five days (too much, no doubt). Our final dinner in the Bush was incredible, with hyenas nearby and lions and impalas in the near distance. It was so cool. We highly recommend Chitwa Chitwa. We were sad to leave. It was such a beautiful experience with lots of great folks making our stay remarkable.

Our family of five spent 5 wonderful days at Chitwa Chitwa. What a magical place! It is set over a large watering hole, with its resident family of hippos, and many other animals that visit the watering hole throughout the day. One day it was a rhino, the next day it was a huge herd of elephants. We were able to just sit on our porch and watch the animals come and go - such a treat! Our room - the Chitwa House - was incredibly spacious, clean, comfortable, and beautifully decorated. The food was delicious, and we especially enjoyed the special dinners that they set up outside the lodge. The best part of Chitwa though was the amazing staff. Our butler/waitperson Leah was so careful with my daughter's gluten allergy, and did everything she could to make sure that she had special dishes and treats at every meal. She also took careful note of the foods that we enjoyed and made sure that they were always available. Nelson the bartender made the best martinis ever. And our fabulous guide and tracker, Dylan and Ranson, took us on the most incredible game drives every day. We saw all of the big 5 within the first 2 days, and they found super special sightings, such as a leopard with newborn cubs, and a pride of lions hunting a herd of buffalo. They truly felt like family by the end of our stay. It was very hard to say goodbye! Thank you Chitwa Chitwa for the experience of a lifetime!

We had such a wonderful time here! We traveled to Chitwa Chitwa from another camp and were picked up by our kind and welcoming guide, Deon, who was like family to us for the duration of our trip. Our rooms were stunning and spacious, with all sorts of nice touches, like an outdoor shower, fully stocked bar fridge, and private pool. We went on "game drives" (safaris) twice per day, which included coffee in the morning and "sundowner" cocktails in the evening. We saw much more wildlife than I had expected and more--all the "big 5," but it was actually the quieter moments of peace that were (to me anyway) the most spectacular; the impalas' ears twitching in the morning fog, the sudden splattering of stars after a magenta sunset, a rabbit running alongside the spotlight. The food was excellent with a lot of variety, especially at breakfast, where they had a breakfast bar with cold foods and fruit, along with options for hot breakfast. Lunches and dinners featured a menu with 4-5 options which made it easy to eat healthy (or not!). The resort itself is simply gorgeous, with bold and beautiful architecture and design. Perhaps the best part is that the camp faces a large watering hole where you can spot hippos, crocs, and elephants, sometimes all at the same time. The members of the staff made us feel like we were part of their family and it was pretty hard to say goodbye in the end. Warmest thanks to Deon, Moses, Amen, Johan, and the rest--you all made the whole experience so magical for us. <3
