When we visited in march the local village was being relocated, when I say village it was a few ramshackled huts along the side of the road. Due to the influx or tourists, lots of the local homes and businesses are being moved to make way for hotels etc. Our tour guide explained to us that these people were offered a pice of land and were treated well. Your best bet is to use the bus from the hotel. You need to book a place at reception, if I remember correctly the bus leaves at 3 and 5pm and comes back at 7 or 9pm. It takes you into town which is about 30 minute ride, you can visit the day and the night markets. Day market is very smelly as no refrigerators so most animals are kept alive until sold. It's great to go as it gives you a taste of the real island. The night market comes alive with lots of street food, all of which was lovely. Loads of good places to eat and really cheep. Phu quoc is only just getting into the tourist market so not a lot to buy. Hope this helps.
