I would describe me and my partner as very reasonable people. When we read bad reviews of this campsite, we took it in our stride and imagined that some people always have something negative to say. My word, we should have listened. The camp site has every promise and their website and photos sell the site well. However, upon arrival, after a short drive past the local industrial estate, you will realise you have paid to stay in a wet hovel. We had planned to stay for a week. I fully admit that the weather was unfortunate during this time, however nothing could have prepared us for how ill equipped the site is for rain. We camp in a tent and are used to roughing it sometimes, however the ground beneath us simply wouldn’t hold us; it squelched and gave way as if we had pitched in a swamp. The whole site was full of water. The central field looked as if it was a pond. You required a canoe to use the footpath up toward the Marina. The paths were dotted with large puddles. Our pitch was absolutely sodden. Water was rising up from beneath the ground sheet into the tent. Not only was it wet but the ground soon turned to mud and after three nights of our weeks stay, we decided rolling around like pigs in muck just wasn’t for us. The facilities looked promising in photos, however upon arriving you realise that only half of the showers have hot water and the ones that do wouldn’t be as good a wash as if your partner just spat on you. After pressing the shower button, you will wait for around a minute, naked, above a dirty grid, waiting for more than a dribble to exit the shower heads. Finally you’ll have a slight flow of water enough to wash. Once washed you will be able to face the dreaded walk across the swamp back to your muddy hole. When we arrived, there was no choice of pitch nor any explanation of where things were. Customer service was non-existent. We were placed right beside the entrance despite there being better pitches further up the hill and out the way. All night we could hear cars on the road and we were often woken up dreadfully early, after a lack of sleep, by the bins being emptied directly opposite. (Yes, that was our view - and on that note, none of the pitches seemed to make the most of the view of the hills). Whilst we stayed here, we noticed many people leaving after one night. We could only wonder whether those people had longer bookings. The saving graces of this place were the lovely couple running the ice cream van down the road, the access to a dog friendly beach and short trip for a lovely walk up the black Combe. As you will probably already be aware, none of these things have any relation to the camp site. After three nights, we decided we had taken about as much as anyone could stand. As we packed up and removed our tent from the cess pit of filth that lied beneath it, we were greeted by a man on a quad bike who asked us if we were leaving before the rain started again. Without wanting to explain the depths of our despair, we said yes. Then we promptly headed for Low Wray National Trust Campsite who we had phoned and had a pitch for us beside Lake Windermere. These pitches are perfectly dry and topped with bark. The whole site is well cared for and there are no issues with water logging in the exact same weather. We are very happy to be continuing our trip elsewhere. Please - if you ever listen to a review, listen to this one. Don’t make the mistake we made or not listening to bad reviews. This place is bloody awful! …
