Reserved 2 rooms (for 6 people) and paid in advance. Left later than expected so we tried to call the property three times with a late ETA. Voice mail was full. Sent an email, still waiting on a response. Arrived at 11 PM to find the hotel dark. Called the number on the sign only to find out there was just ONE room and a surprised manager since he said he had mechanical issues with the second room and didn't know the size of our party. He recommended a hotel down the road which, luckily, had their last two rooms open, but at twice the price. He also promised he would refund our money. We got back from our vacation to find the charge for two rooms with no credit applied. I contested the charges with the CC company, who also tried to contact the hotel with no response. Two MONTHS later this saga has ended with the credit card company agreeing to deny the charges having never heard from the hotel.

My first impression while sitting on one of the chairs out front while my husband checked in was so, so. The view is the only thing this place has going for it. It's amazing. The chairs on the lawn were broken, dirty and miss matched. Half the plants and flowers were dead. Check in could only be done by calling the number on the office door. There is no one on-site if you have an issue or to assist you in any way. We were told by Dave, the owner, that room number 4 was open and the key was on the nightstand...which it was. The room was dingy and had an odor. My husband opened the darkening curtains to expose a very dated, small crowded room. He had to use his keys to turn the air up as the knob was broken off. I took to putting our cold items in the small fridge. We placed our suitcases on the bed and I used the tiny bathroom. My eyes immediately noted the grey mold all around the inside of the stand up shower. I didn't notice the hair on the floor or the garbage in the can until my husband, who used the bathroom after me commented on it. The dark carpeted floor has numerous stain marks. I briefly pulled back the bedding to see dark, floral sheets. We agreed to leave our things there and go out to lunch. My husband, after 30 years, knows me well enough to know that I was anything but pleased with the place. Over lunch he asked if I wanted to look for another hotel and I jumped at the offer. I really didn't care at that point what the cost was because Moran Bay Motel is a breeding ground for germs. We called the owner from the restaurant as his number was on our phone. I said the hotel wasn't what I was expecting and he stated that he wanted us happy and that he would issue us a full refund of the $133.32 deposit we had paid when we booked on-line the month prior. We thanked him, retrieved our belongings and found another, comparable in price, but very nice, clean accommodations. I had no intention of writing this review because Dave had been very nice and SEEMED sincere in his intention of refunding our money. Well, I'm sure you guessed it. It's been over two weeks and he hasn't returned or taken one of our calls and no refund. My only regret is that: 1) I didn't take any pictures and 2) I didn't get anything in writing that he agreed to refund us the deposit. All I can say is buyer beware!! There are many nice, quaint, and clean hotels along the strip.

This is a small, older property overlooking Lake Huron. Here are the positives: the staff is friendly and attentive—when they are there. The office closes overnight and you have to call the owner’s phone if you need something when it is closed. The rooms are clean—which is important. The drawbacks: the property is on a hillside. The front parking lot is very small and very steep. We were advised to park in the back, where it is flat. The back of the property is a grassy area that is flatter than the front, but not flat. The bigger issue is that there is no lighting behind the property—a big security concern. Additionally, it still uses keys (another security concern). The rooms are small and have not been updated. The in-room coffee is instant coffee packets and an electric kettle to heat water. There is very little flat surface space in the room for toiletries—definitely not enough for two people. There is no ice, no vending machine (a few soft drinks for sale in the office—when it is open. With so many properties in this area, many are more updated, but if the others are full, this one does at least have clean rooms.

The owners were the best innkeepers we’ve ever experienced. We’re readily available and interested in our having a great stay. Our room was recently redone so was in excellent shape. Doing self supported bike tour with wife. Our room was on the smallish side for two bikes so owner offered to secure them two doors down. Which worked out perfectly.

We had a wonderful stay at Moran Bay! The owners are very hospitable! Location is awesome. Walkable to ferry to Mackinac Island and to several places to eat. The rooms are tight but very clean with super comfy beds (not too soft and not too hard). But the most fabulous part is the view!! It is breathtaking from the front porch.
