Ambassador Chicago's prime location is a highlight for travelers, offering easy access to nearby attractions and a quiet retreat. While the hotel's atmosphere is often described as elegantly cozy, some guests suggest the rooms could benefit from a refresh, noting dated decor and wear. The staff's warm service is frequently applauded, though some areas for improvement are mentioned.
Cleanliness generally meets expectations, but the value proposition is questioned, especially when unexpected charges arise. Amenities are appreciated but also flagged for needing an upgrade.

Detailed Reviews
We contracted with the Ambassador Chicago Hyatt Hotel for our daughter’s wedding weekend, and the Ambassador was one of the top reasons why the wedding weekend was so successful and memorable! If staying in Chicago for a special occasion or just wanting to get away to one of the greatest cities in the world, we highly recommend the Ambassador Chicago because of its location, the staff, and its historic and comfortable offerings to guests. The on-site staff from the front desk, head porter, security, valet, room service, and housekeeping are professional, kind, and exceptional. Every room is historic and different. Though the standard rooms are small; they are newly remodeled, clean, contemporary, and comfortable. Each suite is different and offers many options in space, style, and view. Room 1218 offers a large sitting area, wet bar area with lots of counterspace and cabinets, large closets, two doors, two TVs, and a large bathroom. Room 1215 offers similar spacing and a faux fireplace that is charming though the bathroom is small. ADA Room 1117 is pitch perfect for any guest who has special needs with a spectacular corner view of the city. Check dates and rates and sign up for World Hyatt membership to accumulate points toward future Hyatt stays. Thursdays and Sundays are lower rates and Hyatt accepts AAA or AARP memberships. Don’t hesitate to ask room service to bring a Keurig coffeemaker or microwave to your room. All our rooms did have a small refrigerator in the room. Don’t miss the complimentary coffee in the morning, the fireplace Library and the front desk lounge areas, and the newly opened Ambassador Room restaurant and bar with live music on Friday nights. Also, take time to go downstairs not just for the lovely workout room, but to view all the incredible photographs of celebrities who stayed at The Ambassador throughout the 20th and into the 21st Century. We can’t wait to return. PS: If at The Ambassador for a wedding, the rooms and terrace are spectacular locations for showing off the Bride, Groom, Wedding Party, and Chicago!

Very beautiful Hotel had a wonderful 2 night stay at The Ambassador. The bellman, Valet Parking & Felix the security manager were really welcoming and friendly and so was the front office supervisor Akira Hudson she was also very friendly and had outstanding excellent customer service. Definitely will be returning & recommend checking out the Ambassador. The rooms are really nice and spacious with a beautiful white aesthetic and a nice view of the city everything was walking distant from the hotel from restaurants to shopping centers. 10/10- Jackie C

I had some concerns about our upcoming stay at this hotel when I read some of the reviews on here but I was honestly delighted with our stay, extremely comfortable beds, huge room, large flat screen TV with chromecast, the bathroom was spotless and the shower was really good with a strong flow of water. Each and every person we met during our visit were super helpful and friendly. I can't recommend this hotel enough if you are looking for somewhere to stay in Chicago. It's closely located to the main bus routes and the L trains. Well worth the visit! Thank you

There is something off putting about landmark fancy hotels with grand lobbies & staircases and exterior fluff when the rooms need updated. It wasnt for me largely because all the furniture and bed is inches off the ground. No outlets on right side of bed to charge phone, had to charge phone in bathroom so couldnt use phone while charging, very inconvenient. "Wine cooler" in room was warm and not working, had to ask three times to have fridge brought up. Why not just put little mini fridges in the room so guests can keep drinks cold? And why are housekeeping supervisors do a room check to assure the room is ready? Make up stains on the carpet. In an effort to be cool the bathroom sinks are huge & square leaving no counter space to set your things. i felt like I was in a 1950s Mad Men room. It may seem cool but is not functional. 4 Star Luxury hotels would do well if they at all care about women to have a magnifying mirror attached with arm to mirror. My biggest complaint was the elevator, had trouble with key card, got stuck in there, called repeatedly on the help phone and no one answered. Had utter panic attack. Had to wait til another guest came for door to open. The elevator needs to be better lit, the buttons are low and hard to read. My feeling is all floors should have ice machine and shouldnt have to go up 5 floors to get ice. I ran into other guests that were having key card issues. In summary, the beautiful lobby & nice restaurant dont compensate for other areas that need to be addressed...I asked front desk if all beds and couches were inches off the ground and she said. Guess they dont want any people over 6 feet tall staying there and certainly no one recovering from hip surgery or knee surgery because they dont believe in any sort of grab bars in the slip bathtub shower and dont factor in beds that are practically on the ground would be hard for older guests. There was alot of guests there though so maybe most people can overlook all the things I considered issues for my stay....The housekeeping staff and valet staff were very helpful.

We visited the ambassador as part of our honeymoon, the hotel is in a great location and the lobby and communal areas are beautiful, unfortunately the rooms are poor and very basic, with no tea or coffee making facilities, empty mini bar and ice machines 3 floors below!
The room was tired and definitely not at a level you would expect.
Housekeeping only visited every 3 days which is really poor as the basics (toilet rolls/washing gels) were not replaced.
Unfortunately I would not visit this hotel again I would choose a group/hotel that had a more personal touch with their guests

Horrible experience.
The room was over rated and overly priced!
Zero amenities!
Stay away!
The hotel is going through a bank default and it’s obvious.
When you pay $400 a night you expect more than a room that’s barely clean no towels and a half empty toilet paper roll.
Very, very disappointing

I was so excited to use the Ambassador as the main hotel block for my wedding this summer. However, after my experience with this hotel I will never be back. My initial attempt at contracting the block itself was the first red flag - and I should have run for the hills. It took nearly 6 weeks and constant follow ups just to get the contract for signing, and multiple promises to send it. When I received the contract, it didn’t have the number of rooms and cutoff date that were promised to me. I told them this and was met with “actually that information wasn’t correct”. Oh well, we dealt with it. We were working with two different sales managers at the time so we let it slide, assuming it was a simple miscommunication between the two.
Then, upon open discussion about hosting a farewell brunch the next day, we were offered some conference room options and were told we could bring outside catering. When I followed up a few weeks later, I was told that they actually don’t allow outside food and I was given incorrect information. Third instance of this, which is not acceptable.
About a week and a half before our wedding I contacted the sales person for final guest counts so I could put together enough welcome bags. I received an automatic reply that the individual no longer worked at the hotel — this was news to me! After contacting the hotel for a new sales manager, this person informed me for the first time that they charged $4 per hotel bag. This was neither in our contract nor was it ever stated to us by the original sales manager (who we told upfront that we’d be handing out bags). At this point, the miscommunication was clearly a trend and quite upsetting. After finally accepting the fact that we were going to be charged for them to hand out bags, we discovered that it was completely botched. Amazing. They claimed we didn’t give them appropriate instructions even though I told them 3 times and they still messed it up.
Finally, they gave wrong information to my planner, including vendor parking fees and an apparent fee for the terrace for our first look (which by the way was $1000 for 30 minutes). They honored the parking rate and didn’t charge the $1000, but claimed it was a courtesy — even though it was their mistake. So somehow after all this, we’re supposed to be thanking them for waiving fees they never told us about and botching nearly everything else in the process.

This hotel used to have a vibe when it was The Public and even when it became The Ambassador before it was acquired by Hyatt. They adeptly erased any inkling of a soul. There is no personality or gesture of care. The rooms are barren. They don't have a coffee-maker, or slippers, or housekeeping until the 3rd day (although they did make the bed even though they said they weren't going to), or art on the walls for that matter, or water, or eco-conscious toiletries. The furniture is tired, there were hairs engrained in the fabric of the couch. You have to venture downstairs in your PJ's to grab a coffee if you're up early. The coffee bar is serviced by 1 poor guy who has to run back & forth to the kitchen. An egg sandwich to go took so long I had to leave after 25 mins without it. I asked the front desk to let him know I had to leave (he had disappeared for 10 mins) and their answer was "you have to tell him yourself". It didn't matter that he wasn't there and I couldn't wait any longer. Eventually someone said they would cancel the order. Needless to say they didn't and still showed up on my bill. I paid $300 a night which I guess in this day & age isn't much, but it's still disappointing when you can tell they just don't give a damn. ;(

For my first trip to Chicago, I booked a four-night stay at the Ambassador JDV, and it was a terrific place to call (temporary) home. I had a large, airy corner room with a huge bathroom. As usual with Hyatt, the mattress and linens were first rate, and I appreciated the excellent Jonathan Adler toiletries.
From check-in on, I was especially impressed with the staff, both at the front desk and in the Ambassador Room. Stephen at the desk was a great resource, well-informed about the neighborhood and and very helpful in things like getting laundry done. Having free coffee and the chance at a (for a hotel, reasonably priced) breakfast was great in the mornings, and the bar at night was lively (and the bartender, whose name alas I don't remember, mixes and a fabulous espresso martini).
The location, while largely residential, is extremely convenient (and going in I was a little concerned). It's an easy walk to the Red Line subway, and there are multiple nearby bus stops. There are also some excellent cafes and restaurants within a few blocks (I especially enjoyed dinner at the bar at Hugo's Frog Bar & Fish House, a walk of less than ten minutes).
If you're looking for a touch of old Chicago with plenty of modern amenities, a great location, and a fine night's sleep, I highly recommend the Ambassador JDV.

The Ambassador was ok. My expectations were higher, given that it was a Hyatt boutique property. We checked in with 15 mins to prepare for our first meeting (traffic...ugh!). Immediately went to the bathroom - no soap, the sink wouldn't drain, and slightly above luke-warm temp water. The accessible King room was exactly as pictured on website, sans green plants/orchids/colored pillows. Our arm chair was stained (if you choose white furniture for your decor...you have to manage it well). On our way out we mentioned the hot water, soap and drain issues which were attended to while we were away, thanks to a very responsive and courteous staff. The water was only available as very luke warm - too cool for us. Once we returned and settled in, we only had 1 robe. Room service is discontinued, and no restaurant on site at the moment. Our corner room had great views of the neighborhood and lake and was spacious. The white on white minimalist decor was not our style; it felt like the hotel was undergoing a major shift and we were caught in the middle of it. Of course, decor and what feels inviting is purely subjective and I understand that. Valet service was prompt! Those guys had great driving and parking tips. Really, the staff was the highlight of this stay. Having stayed at 4 other similarly priced boutique hotels in years past, I think we'll make a different choice next time.

We stayed 7 nights . We were told Housekeeping cleans once every 3 or 4 days . If you need linens or towels you’ll have to call the front desk
They brought a Keurig to my room. I don't recall a resort fee.
Hello! Yes, we have irons in the room and microwaves available upon request.
We have them available on request as well as tea kettles - hope to have you brewing with us soon!
