I stayed at The Ambassador Hotel in Chicago for a conference and my overall experience at the hotel was pretty terrible in terms of accessibility and other aspects, but good in terms of customer service. It’s very difficult to write this negative review because I could tell that the staff had good intentions and was very attentive to my needs. They went above and beyond to help me when I was feeling unwell and made sure I was well hydrated. Everyone was extremely kind and sweet. I believe that the lack of accessibility is not their fault and they tried to make up for it as best as they could. However, I found myself needing to rely on staff members for access to the entrance/exit, and the hotel restaurant. Being able to be independent without needing to ask for assistance is important to me so, although it’s better than no accessibility at all, the inability to move around independently makes the accessibility of this hotel subpar. Regarding accessibility: * Space in room - the wheelchair-accessible room was very spacious which gave me plenty of space to maneuver my wheelchair around. That was very pleasant. * Bathroom - the bathroom mirror was too high up to be useful for a wheelchair user. * Thermostat - the room was freezing but couldn’t operate the thermostat while sitting down on the wheelchair because the thermostat is positioned really high up on the wall. * Bathrooms on second floor (meeting room/conference area) - my standard size wheelchair did not fit through the door of either of the bathrooms, even the one that had the wheelchair accessibility symbol on the door. That one was spacious inside the bathroom but …. my wheelchair couldn’t fit through the door, which defeated the purpose of the extra space inside. * Entrance - Entering the hotel lobby from outside requires a staff member to help you use a wheelchair lift. The wheelchair lift has unlabeled buttons that make it difficult to operate. Adding labels would be helpful. Once on the lobby floor, my wheelchair often would get stuck because the space is very narrow. The staff had to assist me. * Lack of training regarding wheelchair etiquette - While attempting to help me with my wheelchair, which got stuck in the narrow hallway, one staff member, without asking me or warning me, grabbed my power wheelchair’s handle bar, lifted me the back of the wheelchair up in the air, and dragged me into position. This isn’t good practice because 1) attempting to drag a power wheelchair can cause damage to the gears and 2) I could have fallen out do the chair if I was paralyzed or had severe weakness. In good news, in a similar situation, another staff member asked me for permission and I was able to put it in manual mode so he could help me. Unrelated to accessibility: * The phone wasn’t working for me. I let the front desk know and they said they could send an engineer but since it was 2 AM I declined. * The hot and cold symbols on the shower handle are difficult to see and it wasn’t clear how to operate it. * The hot water began randomly turning cold while I was showering and then thankfully turned hot again. * Some of the light switches in the room are not traditional switches and I ended up having to call the front desk to have to figure out how to turn the lights on or off * The buttons on the air conditioning system did not respond to any input. I found out later they are controlled by a thermostat on the wall, which I couldn’t reach while sitting on the wheelchair.

The staff here is incredible, specifically Kenzie. She went above and beyond to make sure our stay was perfect. My fiancé and I flew out to see my brothers graduation from Navy boot camp and decided to make a little family vacation out of it with our 1 year old son and my future mother in law. We had booked 2 rooms online and didn’t realize that what we had booked was not going to work well having a baby with us. Kenzie went out of her way to switch some things up for us to make sure we were more than comfortable. She also called in to check on us after to make sure our needs were met. Great service for me is really what sets an establishment apart from the rest. Kenzie deserves a promotion and a raise for how well she has represented the Ambassador. The uniqueness of this hotel is beautiful and location is perfect. The Gold Coast neighborhood that the hotel is in is gorgeous and within walking distance from anywhere you would want to go within the city. There are a lot of choices for places to stay around here but with the service we had received here at the Ambassador Hotel, I’m so thankful this is where we chose to stay. Thank you Kenzie!

We have come to stay at Ambassador Chicago on a family trip, booking two rooms. We are so pleased with the quality of the lobby and customer service experience, particularly from Kenzie at the front desk. When we booked our stay, one of our rooms turned out to be too small with a crib and a baby and Kenzie reassured us she would do everything she could to guarantee we had an amazing time. She listened to our concerns, helped us into a new room, and throughout our stay checked in on our family. She has gone above and beyond! The hotel is a beautiful, historic building in a walkable area North of downtown. We are so happy with our choice to stay at Ambassador! Special thanks to Kenzie.

Truly enjoyed our recent stay at Ambassador Chicago. Fantastic staff, lovely updates to the rooms, responsive to requests. The neighborhood is our favorite. Make sure you go for a neighborhood/park bike ride on their complementary cruiser bikes.

The Ambassador is a beautiful old hotel in a quiet neighborhood. But it is in need of investment. The elevators are scary. There is no room service. Staff is generally helpful and kind. The gym is tiny and in the windowless basement. The restaurant is expensive and mediocre at best. The bed is, however, incredibly comfortable. So, a mixed bag.

This is the second "high-end" Hyatt we've stayed at in the last four months and left equally, if not, more disappointed. We chose the Ambassador to be the location for our Wedding Night hotel suite based on the amenities listed on the hotel's website -- namely room service, as the other previous Hyatt property (Hyatt Centric) did not have room service despite being told there was initially. This coupled with the hotel's dated infrastructure that has been subjected to piecemeal u[dates/coverups (read: popcorn ceiling has big leaking stain, dated carpet) left for a poor experience. If you're looking for luxury, my suggestion is look elsewhere. Incidentally, just came back from our honeymoon and the property was just recently acquired by the "World of Hyatt". That seal ensured that we won't be returning there, nor will be visiting Hyatt properties whenever possible.

Dear Dandyish, First we'd like to Congratulate you on your recent union while also apologizing for falling short of your expectations especially on your wedding night. Although no reason is just, we have recently gone through some property changes that we are actively restoring back to its proper service and condition. I'd love to chat with you regarding your recent experience to see if we could have you back soon to change your perception of not only the Ambassador but Hyatt as well. I can be reached at tmurray@ambassadorchicago.com if you have a moment soon to discuss. I truly look forward to hearing from you.

Estid and Jorge did an amazing job for us all week. Excellent service. Fun to talk to! They made sure we had everything we needed each day! Raquel was amazing as well …worked with us to plan a successful conference. The Ambasssdor has so much history. Located in a very cool residential neighborhood, only a block or two for great restaurants. Highly recommend the Ambassador in Chicago.
